2019 Lexus UXBrian Harper / Driving Sport-cutes, faux-by-fauxes, crossovers; belittle them all your want, but theyre all the rage, especially in the entry-level luxury segment. Indeed, there appears to be no limits to how small you can make these soft-roaders, as long as they sport a recognizable that should be read pretentious badge and some fancy leather. Hence why, despite already having the cuter-than-thou NX in its lineup, Lexus recently released in its UX, an SUV so small that it feels like it could fit in the glove box of a Suburban. Yes, it really is petite, at least by sport-brute standards. If calling them crossovers or SUVs is what it takes to notice hatchbacks, so be itLexus bills the new UX as a crossover, another of those soft-roaders that trade on the robustness of the classic SUV, but offer the familiarity of a passenger car. But, the line betwixt car and crossover has been blurring lately and nowhere more so perhaps than in this baby Lexus. For all intents and purposes, this is a hatchback with a little more ground clearance and a butch grille.Thats no insult, as said pseudo car status result in excellent space utilization and surprisingly because were all still getting used to Lexus new performance push good handling while still looking butch enough for urban adventurers. Im not sure if this trick is going to work, but so far, consumers have proven willing to buy anything as long as you bill it as something that claims some sport and a modicum of utility. The interior is truly incredible I just finished testing a $44,599 Ford Escape Titanium, a sport-cute whose cabin I lauded for its dramatic improvement over its predecessor. It cant hold a candle to the UXs interior, which is as luxurious if not more so than anything Ive seen in this segment. The leather used in the seats is worthy of a full-float luxury sedan. Ditto for the dashboard, which really feels it should be in an LS rather than a bargain-basement for a luxury marque hatchback passing itself off as a sport-cute.The ergonomics are also well thought-out. The controls the traction control and drive mode switches placed on the upper binnacle around the gauge cluster were a good idea when Nissan tried it on its iconic 300ZX sports car and theyre still an advantage compared with reaching over to centre console, or further cluttering of the turn signal stalk. Lexus still relies on more buttons than most automakers who have succumbed to the allure of touchscreens, both the climate controls and audio system having fully physical switchgear. This last is truly innovative; the radio controls are set back in a little pod atop the centre console. To minimize distraction, the volume knob is at the front of the pod while the tuning control is on its side, making operating the audio system so easy that you never have to take your eyes off the road or reach for the dashboard. In fact, if you are particularly ADDd who, me? you can operate both the volume control (with your middle finger) and the tuning knob (with your thumb) simultaneously.Better yet, the little pod also has two little buttons on either side again, well placed so that they can be operated by thumb, and this time, the ring finger so you can toggle up and down the station spectrum even more easily. These are, by far, the best radio controls I have ever tested on any car, regardless of the marque, segment, or price. Well done Lexus: more convenient and less distraction!Well done, Lexus; more convenience and less distraction! These exemplary controls are probably a good thing. Lexus insisted on staying with the touchpad control system for its infotainment systems; its much improved in its iteration, but at best, it takes some getting used to, and at worst, some will never make their peace with it. Its the only sticking point, however, to the best interior in this entry-level luxury segment. It could use a little more gutsLexus offers the UX in two guises the base, front-wheel-drive UX200, and the top-of-the-line UX250h Hybrid. Both use small, 2.0-litre four-bangers for motivation and neither, as is so common in this segment nowadays, is turbocharged. That means, while some players in this segment boast more than 200 horsepower, the base UX200 claims but 168. Even the UX250h, with the addition of two small electric motors only nets out at 181 horsepower. Perhaps more damaging is that the base UX200 is purely front-wheel-drive, no AWD option available. The UX250h, having an electric motor powering the rear axle, directs at least some power to all four wheels. It may not be as damaging as those numbers indicate, though. Despite the lack of forced induction, the little 2.0L has enough low-end guts for pretty much everything short of serious hooliganism. Its also decently quiet and smooth. In fact, the only flaw in its comportment is that Lexus, always concerned about efficiency and fuel economy, has paired the small four-cylinder with a CVT.

Jaguar boosts IPace efficiency with system tweaks
Jaguar boosts I-Pace efficiency with system tweaks Improvements have come from developments on the racing Jaguar Jaguar has rolled-out a range of updates to its I-Pace range, which see the pure-electric model’s range improved by up to 12 miles on a single charge. The improvements have come about thanks to technical knowledge gained from the I-Pace e-Trophy single-make race series. Battery management, thermal systems, and all-wheel drive torque settings have all been tweaked. The changes will be implemented on all new I-Pace models going forward, and existing customers are being invited to have the improvements retro-fitted to their models. The upgrade is complimentary, and enhanced over-the-air software upgrade functionality will be added at the same time. This means that the I-Pace now has a range of up to 292 miles (WLTP), despite no physical changes being made to the car’s hardware. Jaguar has changed the torque distribution between front and rear motors to offer greater efficiency in Eco mode. The I-Pace retains its permanent all-wheel drive status however. Thermal management improvements see greater use made of the active radiator vanes, closing them more frequently to smooth out aerodynamics more often. The car’s usable battery capacity has been improved too, allowing the I-Pace to run down to a lower state-of-charge than previously. Again, the gross capacity of 90 kWh remains, but the net capacity has been increased. Jaguar has also worked on the brake energy recuperation system to use regen more efficiently when the battery has a high state of charge, and the amount of energy recovery has been increased at lower speeds for a similar effect. Finally, the predictive range calculation algorithm has been refined for a more accurate and consistent estimate, one more reflective of the driving style. Performance figures remain the same, with a 0-62mph time of 4.5 seconds possible, while recharging is still possible at 100 kW on ultra-rapid points.

Acura will bring this modified retro SLX to RADwood
While it says Acura on the front, underneath its skin, this truck is really a Honda Horizon. And under that facade, its really an Isuzu Trooper. Although in this video made by the brand, its much more than any of those.Acura threw together this retro clip showcasing one of its classic SUVs with a wacky, modern twist. It shows an enthusiast buying the vehicle, then taking it home to park it beside his partners new Acura SLX.A couple bottles of liquid are spilled on the floor to create a powerful potion, which, thanks to the magic of 90s video-editing, takes parts from the new vehicle and imparts them into the 1997 model. In real life, Acura modified the original 1997 model year truck to include a bunch of components from its latest models. Namely, theres the 2.0-litre turbocharged VTEC engine, the Super Handling All-Wheel Drive System and the 10-speed transmission. Various suspension components were also upgraded to give the truck better ride and handling that includes an independent rear suspension in place of the original live axle. The video preys on the nostalgia of the 20- to 30-year-olds of today, who perhaps grew up in the back of one of these classic 1990s SUVs and are now trying to relive that childhood. Good luck finding one like the hero car for $500, though. The end of the video shows the same goopy concoction being spilled in order to recreate the effect of the potion, but instead with a brand-new NSX.The vehicle will be on display at the upcoming RADwood car show in Los Angeles, along with a 1991 NSX, the earliest known example in North

BMW driver death sees Takata recall another 1.4 million airbags
A cross-section of a steering wheel showing the airbag.Handout / Mercedes-Benz Takata, the parts supplier behind the largest auto recall ever, told U.S. safety regulators another 1.4 million vehicles need to be repaired over a defect linked to the death of a BMW driver and two other injuries in overseas markets.Components Takata supplied to five of the worlds biggest car manufacturers may absorb moisture that could either cause air bags to rupture or under-inflate, according to a notice on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administrations website. The recall involves parts produced from 1995 through 1999 and sold to BMW, Audi, Toyota, Honda and Mitsubishi.BMW issued three recalls covering roughly 116,000 U.S. vehicles containing the parts and recommended roughly 8,000 of those should not be driven until theyre fixed, the NHTSA said in a statement. The luxury-car maker is aware of one fatality and one injury in Australia linked to the faulty air-bag inflators, plus another injury in Cyprus, according to filings with the agency. The company told the NHTSA in November it hadnt received reports of similar incidents in the U.S. The callbacks and fatality disclosed Wednesday are the latest twist in a years-long saga that landed Takata in bankruptcy two years ago. The Japanese manufacturer supplied tens of millions of defective air-bag inflators for years that were prone to exploding in a crash and injuring or killing car occupants by spraying metal shards. Takata pleaded guilty as part of a US$1-billion settlement with the U.S. Justice Department over its handling of the issue.Takata was purchased in April 2018 by a unit of Chinas Ningbo Joyson Electronic Corp., and the combined unit was renamed Joyson Safety Systems.Past Takata recalls were blamed on its use of ammonium nitrate as a propellant to inflate air bags in the event of a crash. For its latest safety campaign, the company is citing a manufacturing issue that affected inflators containing a non-azide propellant. The parts maker said it produced and sold 4.45 million of the inflators globally during the time period covered by the recall. According to Takatas safety recall report to the NHTSA, the number of inflators it produced for vehicles sold in the U.S. was substantially smaller but is not precisely known at this time. Because of the age of the potentially affected vehicles, only a portion remain in service, the company said.BMW is the only carmaker to have issued vehicle recalls in the U.S. over the inflators so far.Honda is trying to understand which models are affected and cant say how many vehicles are impacted, a spokeswoman for the company said. A Mitsubishi spokesman said the company is identifying the models and countries involved, though the NHTSA said only the Mitsubishi Montero is affected in the U.S.Toyota is investigating the issue and working with the NHTSA and Joyson, a spokeswoman for the automaker said. Joyson representatives couldnt immediately be reached for comment. Audis U.S. unit is cooperating with NHTSA and investigating whether some its U.S. vehicles from model years 1997 through 1999 are affected, a spokeswoman said by

These 10 vehicles are 2019’s least reliable models according to Consumer Reports
Consumer Reports has revealed its list of the top 10 least reliable vehicle models for 2019, and, shocking no one, its filled mostly with cars from American automakers. To evaluate the vehicles, Consumer Reports tests 17 problem areas, including squeaky brakes, broken interior trim, out-of-warranty transmission repairs and four-wheel-drive issues. The severity of each problem is weighted to give a Predicted Reliability Score, cross-referenced with track tests and owner satisfaction survey results to give the final score. Some 420,000 vehicle owners are surveyed in the test.Yes, not unexpectedly, this year a lot of the vehicles at the bottom of the reliability scale are from American and Italian brands, with only a few surprises thrown in.Chevrolet TraverseRight off the bat, the Chevrolet Traverse earned its spot at number 10 on the list by offering poor reliability, but above-average owner satisfaction, it should be noted. You win some, you lose some.Chrysler PacificaNumber nine on the list is one of the few remaining Chrysler-branded vehicles the namesake OEM makes anymore, the Pacifica minivan. With a score of 16, the vehicle received a poor reliability rating and an average owner satisfaction rating.Tesla Model XThe Tesla Model X is next with a score of 15. Perhaps we should not be surprised by Tesla owners’ cult-like devotion to the brand, but despite this poor reliability, the Tesla somehow managed to garner an excellent rating in the Owner Satisfaction department. It’s not the first time we’ve seen this counterintuitive devotion from Tesla owners…Acura MDXOnly one Japanese vehicle made the list, the Acura MDX, with a score of 15. Reliability was found to be poor, and customer satisfaction was also below-average.Volkswagen Atlas and TiguanTwo Volkswagens made the list in the fifth and sixth spots, the Atlas and Tiguan. with a rating of 13 and 15 respectively. Both earned poor reliability scores, and only average owner satisfaction.Alfa Romeo GiuliaAlfa Romeo had to make the list, and it did it this time with the Giulia, and a score of 13. Owner satisfaction was above-average, but reliability was still poor.Jeep WranglerIf youre surprised at number three, you dont know anything about cars. Its the Jeep Wrangler, with a score of 12. Poor reliability ratings, but, again, still an above-average owner satisfaction rating.Chevrolet CamaroSecond from worst is the Chevrolet Camaro with a score of five. Poor reliability ratings didnt stop owners from giving it an excellent satisfaction rating, however. We have a hunch Camaro owners are probably more interested in performance than durability, anyway.Chevrolet ColoradoThe worst offender, according to Consumer Reports’ surveys, is the Chevrolet Colorado, with a reliablility score of just four. Not only was the truck unreliable, owners rated their satisfaction with the vehicle as

BMW decides to offer Apple CarPlay for free after all
BMW has made buyers pay for the privilege to connect their phones to its already-outrageously-priced luxury vehicles since 2016 in Canada, it just started the practice this past July but now the automakers reversing its decision to allow a better customer experience. For the 2019 model year, BMW was asking Canadian buyers for $100 per year for Apple CarPlay, unless they wanted to opt for a 20-year subscription for $400. After just a few months, that price has been dropped back down to free.BMW is always looking to satisfy our customers needs and this policy change is intended to provide them with a better ownership experience, a BMW spokesperson said to Autocar. In the U.S., the decision to charge users a one-time $300 fee and then a subsequent $80-per-year subscription fee was definitely a head-scratcher, considering every other manufacturer offers the connectivity service for free on most standard models. The fees were likely implemented to make buyers similarly scratch their heads, and step up to the next-highest trim level BMW, which offered full satellite infotainment and navigation for only a few dollars more.CarPlay doesnt cost automakers any extra money, according to Apple, but it does cost money to implement the system into vehicles, one likely eaten by manufacturers who offer the service without charger unless youre BMW.While automakers have been trying to keep phone companies away from their vehicles for years, believing they could offer a better system themselves, more and more companies are now caving to consumers who prefer their phone

Burning BMW extinguished with – yech! – liquid human waste
A Russian driver whose newer BMW SUV caught fire was lucky we guess? a passing sewage truck was able to extinguish the blaze using, ugh, liquefied human waste. The vehicle was pulled over to the side of the road when the driver (we assume on his way to drop the kids off at the pool) noticed his SUVs engine bay filling with smoke. Thats when the proverbial s*** really hit the fan.Luckily, the driver of a tanker truck nearby was able to offer some help. The tanker could have been filled with anything but gasoline and still effectively snuff the blaze water, milk, ginger ale, anything.Nope. Our poor BMW drivers luck came with a caveat, that the nearby truck dealt in waste disposal, and the tank was filled with you guessed it human feces. Yknow, maybe gasoline would have been better after all?The BMW owner, seemingly left with no choice, okayed the truck driver to aim his hose at the vehicle and let it rip. The BMW X6, already infamous for looking like crap, received a healthy dose of deuce to douse the flames. As the vehicle continued to spew smoke out of the engine bay, the driver attempted to open the hood so the truck driver could really let the poo fly. Eventually the fire was put out, thanks to your friendly neighbourhood waste disposal guy.Video of the extinguishings garnered the attention of more than 43,000 people, many of whom were likely sitting on the toilet themselves while they watched. Some 7,000 comments were also posted, most proclaiming they would have just let the vehicle burn.If you were standing by watching your car burn, what would you prefer? To have your whole vehicle smattered with scat, or to watch it burn to the ground? Either way, this BMW is toast.Take Our Poll

VW Canada removing front-wheel-drive options from its Atlas
Volkswagen Canada is taking away the front-wheel-drive option on its Atlas SUVs and fitting the trucks 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder with AWD standard, citing low take rates on the FWD.The soon-to-be-released mid-size 2020 Atlas Cross Sport wont see FWD when it hits dealers here in March 2020, reports Automotive News; and when the full-size Atlas gets refreshed for the 2021 model year in mid-2020, itll drop that drivetrain. That means, for the first time, AWD Atlases can be paired with the 2.0-litre turbo four. Having the (all-wheel drive) with the four-cylinder allows us to offer it at a better price point, VW Canada public relations manager Thomas Tetzlaff told the outlet. The people that were on the fence, now weve given them that

America’s only airworthy vintage flying car heads to Barrett-Jackson
The only airworthy and road-worthy vintage flying car on the continent will cross the block at Barrett-Jacksons January 2020 sale in Scottsdale, Arizona, where its expected to fetch close to a million dollars. The vehicle was hand-built in 1954 by the Taylor Aerocar company. Designed in 1949 by engineer Moulton Taylor, there were actually more than a few of them built.Doing double-duty driving the wheels and supplying thrust-in-air is a Lycoming 0-320, a 320-cubic-inch four-cylinder boxer engine. It sends power to the front wheels via a three-speed manual transmission, or to the rear-mounted prop. While most flying cars are really just planes with engines that turn the wheels, this one actually leans a little more on the car side all the plane parts can be removed, in fact, and you can choose to tow them behind you, or not. If you were to just drive it around like a regular car, you could do that. Want to take it out for a day of flying? Just hook up your little trailer of wings and things and youre good to go.When the vehicle is in car mode, its actually quite stylish. Being from the 1950s, it has a neat European look to it. Of course, theres nothing as stylish as falling in style that is, flying. Amazingly, this is not the first flying car auctioned at Barrett-Jackson. The firms previously sent across the block a 2004 Panoz Esperante converted into an airplane by none other than fabricator Jesse James. This particular Aerocar was up until recently on display at an air museum in Minnesota, and previously listed for US$895,000. Barrett-Jackson is offering the vehicle with no reserve. it is fully FAA-certified and has flown 781 hours since

Hennessey plans to build a 1,200-hp Corvette C8 because of course
In retrospect, it seems inevitable: Texas tuning shop Hennessey is planning to build a 2020 Chevrolet Corvette C8 with 1,200 horsepower. As if the vehicle wasnt already hard enough for some good ol boys to adjust to, being mid-engined and all, now that extra horsepower will be sure to send all said boys into other peoples yards even quicker. To make it happen, Hennessey will take the LT2 V8 and bolt on two massive turbochargers. To stop it from becoming tiny shards of engine parts, forged aluminum pistons and forged steel connecting rods will be installed, along with a few other bespoke parts. To send the power to the wheels, Hennessey says it will incorporate an upgraded and fortified factory dual-clutch automatic transmission and a full Brembo brake system. Those Brembos will definitely be getting a stiff workout. The HPE1200, as it will be called, doesnt have a price or a release date yet, but were sure itll be too soon before we see a bunch of these things terrorizing our quiet neighbourhoods. Before the HPE1200 is built, Hennessey will also unveil a line of products for the C8, like a stainless steel exhaust system, a supercharger upgrade good for 700 horsepower, and more once computer tuning becomes available for the new C8 platform.Hennessey has also revealed it has modified over 500 C7s so far, and the next upgrades it will make available for purchase will be decided by online questionnaire. The customers are telling us what they want and big surprise they want more power! says John
