Renault has revealed pricing and specs for the limited-run Mégane RS Trophy-R. Just 32 examples are destined for the UK, starting at £51,140. That price includes special Öhlins shock absorbers and an Akrapovic exhaust, alongside Brembo brakes, while a carbon bonnet and diffuser are part of a comprehensive weight reduction programme to offer increased performance. It’s far from the most expensive Trophy-R on offer, however. A £63,140 ‘Carbon wheel pack’ variant is offered, which receives for Carbon Revolution alloy wheels, reducing unsprung weight by 2kg a corner. That’s not all, however. The most extreme version offered is the Nürburgring Record Pack, priced at £72,140. For that you get a car claimed to be the same spec as the car that set the hot hatch lap record at the fearsome German circuit. That includes sector-first carbon ceramic brakes, with large 390mm discs and golf finished callipers. A straight-feed dynamic air intake is also included. The new range-topper features the same highly tuned 1.8-litre turbo engine as the Mégane RS 300 Trophy, which produces 296bhp and 295lb ft of torque. The 0-62mph time drops 0.3 sec from the standard car to 5.4sec, while the top speed increases by 2mph to 163mph. Renault says that the Trophy-R is 130kg lighter, due to a weight saving programme led by Renault Sport, which developed the new model with the same approach taken on a racing car. The Trophy-R is claimed to feature improved aerodynamics and a reworked chassis drive axles to boost performance. That maintains the ethos of previous generations of Trophy-R, which have been focused on extracting performance through handling and dynamics, rather than purely relying on power. The model has also benefitted from development work undertaken by Renault Sport’s partners; it features Brembo brakes, an Akrapovic exhaust, track-focused Bridgestone tyres, lightweight Sabelt bucket seats and Öhlins shock absorbers. Renault claims to have set a new front-wheel-drive production car lap record at the Nürburgring Nordschleife with a high-specced Trophy-R. According to Renault, the car lapped the 12.80-mile Nordschleife in 7min 40.10sec on 5 April, and also posted a time of 7min 45.39secs on the full 12.94-mile layout. It has previously been spied in action on the German race track. The front-wheel-drive production car record at the Nürburgring was previously held by the current Honda Civic Type R, which lapped the track in 7min

Best lease deals of the week: Superminis
Leasing can be an affordable, practical route into having your own private car, but it’s not always easy to tell the good deals from the duds. The experts at our sister magazine What Car? work hard to find you the best pay-monthly schemes, taking into account mileage allowance, montly outlay, contract length and initial deposit. We’ll be bringing you the best deals they find from a different segment each week. This week, it’s superminis: 1. Ford Fiesta Zetec 1.1. 5dr £1037 deposit, £173 per month, 48 months, 8000 miles per year Look no further for driving pleasure. The Fiesta is uncommonly good in this respect. The 1.1-litre isn’t as nippy as the 1.0 EcoBoost but precise steering and handling are ample compensation. 2. Volkswagen Polo 1.0 TSI 95 SE 5dr £1123 deposit, £187 per month, 48 months, 8000 miles per year Agile but comfortable, spacious, well equipped, refined – if the Fiesta excels as a driver’s car the Polo is the great all-rounder, the supermini that ticks more boxes for more people. Only the noisy diesels spoil the fun. 3. Skoda Fabia 1.0 MPI S 5dr £842 deposit, £140 per month, 48 months, 8000 miles per year The cheapest car here betrays its status with hard interior plastics and a less than sophisticated ride. But it’s remarkable value being good to drive, spacious and practical. Skoda ranks high on customer service, too. 4. Seat Ibiza 1.0 SE Technology 5dr £910 deposit, £152 per month, 48 months, 8000 miles per year It lacks the maturity of the Polo but the Ibiza is an immensely talented and capable supermini. Driving pleasure and a range of strong engines are balanced by a roomy and practical interior. It’s top value, too. 5. Nissan Micra 1.0 IG-T 100 Acenta 5dr £948 deposit, £158 per month, 48 months, 8000 miles per year You’ll find eye-catching looks, a smart interior and good equipment levels. Where it falls down is in its average driving experience and poor rear head room, a bit of a shortcoming for a five-door-only supermini. For more great personal business lease deals visit What Car?

Future sports cars sold in Canada will be quieter because of this new EU rule
2020 Mercedes-AMG GT R ProHandout / Mercedes-Benz Regulations that dictate the maximum volume of new sports cars in Europe will also result in quieter cars in North America and around the world, according to a Mercedes-AMG boss. In an interview with Australian publication Car Sales, Mercedes-AMG’s head of product planning, Basitian Bogenschutz, confirmed the upcoming AMG A 45 S and CLA 45 S will be the first AMG products to sing at the volume dictated by the European authorities. And that’s not just in Europe, either, as Bogenschutz explains that producing two separate exhaust systems with different sound outputs for different markets is simply too pricey. So, AMG for one will take the path of least resistance and produce the one quieter unit to be distributed to all markets. The tightening European sound restrictions will spell the end of the current CLA 45’s and A 45’s engine’s snaps, crackles and pops, replacing it instead with a system that communicates that hearty gurgle to those inside the cabin, but not outside. “So we added the AMG pure performance sound, where we take the real sound from the exhaust system, the pulsation of the real sound and move it inside the car,” Bogenshutz told Car Sales. “It works together with the exhaust system.” Mercedes-AMG is the first maker of loud cars to detail how the European regulations will impact the global driving community, but it likely won’t be the last. The rules are the rules, and fussing about them, no matter how loudly, won’t win any exceptions. The future is coming, but you’ve got to listen to hear it.

Hyundai Canada is launching a probe to uncover what happened after a Kona EV allegedly caught fire and exploded in a residential garage in Montreal.According to CBC, Piero Cosentino first notice something was wrong when dark clouds of smoke started coming from his garage. As soon as I saw that, I immediately turned off the breaker, he said.Seconds later the vehicle exploded, launching the garage door across the street and blowing a big hole in the roof of his garage. If we were in front of the garage door, we could have been in the hospital, he said.https://twitter.com/MWagnerRC/status/1154914693917679623?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1154914693917679623ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fcanada.autonews.com%2Fautomakers%2Fhyundai-canada-probing-case-kona-ev-allegedly-explodedCosentino says the car wasnt charging and wasnt plugged into the wall. This Nova Scotia man has owned the same Model T truck for 70 years
Randall Pitman is 87 years old, and for the last 70 years hes been driving the same old truck, a 1927 Ford Model T.According to the CBC, Pitman was 17 years old when he bought his truck in 1949, and the pair have gone on a number of adventures since, spanning hundreds of kilometres. To be able to afford the truck, Pitman worked at a gas station earning just 10 cents an hour, equivalent to $1.13 in 2019 money.Eventually, he saved up $50 ($563 today) and went to the auction house to buy the truck.Eventually, I bid $45 and the auctioneer, as auctioneers do, kept saying, Forty-five! Who will give me 50?’ he remembers. I stupidly said Forty-seven fifty, and he said Sold!’The truck is pretty basic in the truest sense of the word. Asking Pitman about brakes elicits a chuckle and a reassurance that they work. Nothing on the truck is done for you; even the ignition timing must be manually adjusted to start it.It doesnt even have turn signals Pitman has to stick his hand out the window and signal like you would on a bicycle.Pitman will put the truck on a flatbed to take it on a 600-kilometre journey to Crapaud, P.E.I for a car show that is expected to attract hundreds of vehicle and enthusiasts. Hes covered journeys longer than that in the past, but said that as the car gets older, the parts become more expensive; roadside repairs would still be possible, but not favourable.Pitmans other vehicle is another 1927 Model T, but a coupe model he bought in the 1960s and has been slowly restoring. Hes confident hell keep both vehicles on the

New Ford Focus RS comes with free vape because stereotypes
In what could possibly be the ultimate example of a stereotype coming to life, a Ford dealership is offering buyers of a Focus RS on its lot a free vape with their purchase.Prestman Auto of Salt Lake City is offering this used Ford Focus RS for US$25,900, and along with the car, is tossing in, too, the opportunity to try vaping and the culture that surrounds it.Jalopnik got in touch with the dealership to confirm the promotion was, indeed real, and not a joke like we assumed.Yes, there is a vape included in the purchase of the RS. We have a vape store next to our dealership that the buyer can go to and pick out a vape, a rep from the dealership said. We did that because most of the potential buyers for that car come with vape in hand. The Ford Focus RS garners the attention of mostly men in their mid-20s who enjoy something called hooning, saying things like hashtag-save-the-manuals, and then under-steering into a tree in a giant cloud of vape smoke (at least, if the rest of the stereotype is also true). This dealership hopes to offer all of that in one concise buying transaction. In all fairness, the car seems to be in pretty good shape, with only 34,576 miles on the odometer, which means the head gasket probably hasnt exploded yet (but maybe check before purchase). It does feature a six-speed manual transmission; and “Drift Mode,” for extra

The Honda e dashboard design makes us want it even more
The Honda e Prototype at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show.Harold Cunningham / AFP/Getty Images Hondas beautiful e concept is coming to life, and the more we learn about it, the more we cant wait to get our hands on one.Honda has just released a video detailing the dashboard of the e, and we have to say, it makes us want one even more than we already did.The dashboard consists of two 12.3-inch touch screens in the centre for the infotainment, an 8.8-inch screen right in front of the driver, and two six-inch mirrors on the edges of the dash to show what the external camera mirrors see.The design is downright gorgeous in its simplicity, and when the vehicle is turned off you wouldnt even recognize that the entire fascia of the dash was a touch screen. Its easy to configure too, basically, anybody thats ever been in contact with a smartphone can move around the apps and change the interface to suit their needs. A smartphone can also be used as a key instead of a standard fob and can be configured to set geofencing, preconditioning, and safety alerts. On top of the great dash, the vehicle will respond to Hey Honda commands. The climate change buttons have remained tactile, and so have the buttons on the steering wheel.According to Honda, more than 36,000 people expressed interest in buying the small EV after it was revealed, the UK, Germany, France, and Norway will get first priority, but we hope Honda knows that Canada wants it just as much as the rest of the

Buy it! This modded Golf R32 is bound to be a modern classic
For those of us who grew up in the wake of the Fast and Furious movies, tuner cars are all the rage, and this lightly modified VW Golf R32 on Bring a Trailer should serve as a welcome addition to any young-timers garage.More than just a 2004 Golf, the R32 added all-wheel-drive into the mix, turning what would be a torque-steering handful into a controllable glove. Powering the hot hatch is a 3.2L VR6 engine that makes 240 horsepower and 236 lb.-ft. of torque, and is sent to all four wheels via a six-speed transmission.Only 5,000 R32s were produced for the US market, and only 1,750 were finished in Reflex Silver, making this a more rare beast than the badge would imply if it werent debadged with a Kamei badgeless grille. A Seat Cupra R lip, notched eyelids, smoked fender lights, Hella black housing headlights and tinted taillights, rear badge removal, TMT lower grille inserts, blue-tinted side mirror glass, and a stubby roof antenna make this vehicle a little more unique without being too gaudy. Bilstein coilovers and 18 Volk racing wheels also give it a proper stance, which is hip with the kids these days. The seller has also included a video detailing all of the modifications done to the car.The original window sticker shows that this R32 sold for $29,675, and is included in the vehicle paperwork. With the crowd of car enthusiasts becoming younger, it only makes sense that the vehicles that people covet will be from their childhoods, and thus newer performance vehicles will likely see a rise in value in the coming

Analysis: why Vauxhall’s Luton plant has a bright future
Britain’s biggest commercial vehicle plant, Vauxhall Luton, last month started production of a new Vivaro van as part of a £100 million investment under new PSA ownership that secures 1250 jobs. The new van provides Luton with long-term security, gives a huge vote of confidence in the plant’s ability to adopt PSA manufacturing and quality standards and potentially opens up opportunities to build other vehicles based on the PSA EMP2 platform, which also underpins the Vauxhall Grandland X. “This is a very, very important investment for Vauxhall,” said plant director Mike Wright. “In less than two years, the workforce has turned this plant into one of PSA’s ‘European champions’. The amount of change at the plant has just been huge.” Such accolades are particularly crucial when you consider how under threat Vauxhall’s other major plant – Ellesmere Port – has appeared to be in recent months. Five years ago, Wright guided Autocar through a tranche of £168m of investment that put the revamped Gen-3 Vivaro into production under GM ownership in conjunction with Opel and Renault, securing the Luton plant to 2025. Now it’s all change after PSA bought Vauxhall/Opel in March 2017, with the Vivaro name switching to the design that serves as the Citroën Jumpy/ Dispatch, Peugeot Expert and Toyota ProAce Verso. Like the outgoing Vivaro, it’s front-driven, but, being based on a platform that also supports SUVs, has refinements such as a multi-link rear axle, a more complex electrical system and a panoramic roof option for passenger versions. Switching to the new platform has required significant changes to the Luton plant layout. The bulk of the investment – £65m – has gone into a new, heavily robotised body-in-white assembly plant for the new platform. To accommodate the new line, Vauxhall cleared out a cavernous 8000-square-feet underground car park and installed 300 new robots plus assembly jigs and mechanical handling gear capable of pushing out 24 chassis platform underbodies every hour. “With a lot of blood, sweat and tears, we’ve transformed this space and installed and commissioned a whole new chassis line in just 12 months,” said Wright. This might just be a record for a new assembly plant body shop, the urgency of PSA to speed up the turnaround providing the impetus. Such speed of delivery is possible since the line at Vauxhall replicates the one installed at Sevel Nord, PSA’s van plant at Valenciennes in northern France. Luton is now part of PSA’s ‘van cluster’, led by Sevel Nord, and featuring Luton, Sevel Sud in Italy and Gliwice in Poland. Quality is benchmarked against Nord and, on our visit, Citroën and Peugeot vans are in production as a quality yardstick. Operations at Luton have been simplified by bringing in kits of pressed body panels from Sevel Nord’s suppliers, although this has diluted local content to 22% – below the 40% that it was under GM. Vauxhall hopes to raise the local content in future. With panels coming in from France, Luton’s ageing press shop is quiet for now. The speed of the model changeover at Luton allows insufficient time to build new body dies, which typically takes two years. Previously, the press shop was fully occupied stamping out panels both for Luton and Renault’s Normandy van plant. Replacement work might include panels for the PSA family of vans. As well as the new platform bodyshop, the Luton plant has reorganised its flow of parts and assembly to use two floors instead of three, dedicating the ground floor solely for assembly and final trim. A conveyor moves platforms from the new underground welding line to the first floor where the bodies are built up, before dropping down to the ground floor. Machines are crammed in to these new areas as PSA cracks the whip to improve workflow and shrink the production line footprint, one of its production efficiency measures. Body assembly starts when body panels arrive in trucks from France, crated in sets of 18 and paired left/right to ensure full sets. After being loosely ‘tabbed’ together they move into assembly, where 128 new robots are deployed on bodyside welding alone. Sparks fly, as usual, in the body-framing welding station, which is also new, and is the centrepiece of the plant. Usefully, more automation has raised output, and by mid-2020 Vauxhall plans 90,000 to 100,000 units per year, considerably more than the 60,000 annually under GM. At 100,000, the paint shop will be at full capacity. PSA has introduced innovations in final assembly, too, notably a new automated parts handling system dubbed the ‘supermarket’ that automatically loads components into bins to be delivered line-side by a fleet of 19 robotic, automatically guided vehicles (AGV). This reduces line-side clutter at the 200-plus final assembly stations, essential because the new PSA van offers more build variations, requiring more parts at each station. A spin-off from this extra complication is a
