Motorcycles and parts at the Millarville Vintage Motorcycle Swap Meet in the old riding arena. This building collapsed early in 2018, and a new arena has been built in its place. In 2019, the event takes place on Sunday, Sept. 8.Greg Williams Vintage motorcycle enthusiasts enjoy nothing more than rooting around on tabletops and through boxes searching for elusive parts and pieces that will bring an old machine back to life.Since 2003 the Canadian Vintage Motorcycle Groups Rocky Mountain Section (Calgary) has hosted a motorcycle parts swap meet in early September. It started in a small community hall in Inglewood, but in 2006 the event moved to the riding arena at the Millarville Racing and Agricultural Societys pastoral grounds south of the city. Early in 2018, however, a heavy snow load collapsed the riding arenas roof and that left the group without a venue. They scrambled to come up with a plan B and managed to pull off a mostly outdoors swap meet at Millarville. This year, things are different. The Millarville Racing and Agricultural Society has built a new, larger riding arena, and the 2019 version of the Millarville Vintage Motorcycle Swap Meet is ready to take the building for a test ride. A 24,750 square foot steel structure was designed and erected by the Ironwood Building Corp., and the building was up late in 2018. The footprint of the previous arena was 16,000 square feet. Its almost double the size of the old arena, says CVMG-RMS swap meet coordinator Janice Whitby. She adds, Theres new frontage, and the configuration of the building has changed so the table layout will be different this year.I think a lot of people are looking forward to seeing the new venue. Its brighter inside and its a building with unique appeal. The structure is new and fresh it feels modern and its got wood around the interior walls that makes it feel a little warmer, and not sterile.Yes, she says, there is a dirt floor. Its close to dust-free, however, and it helps add to the overall charm of the swap meet, she explains.A diverse range of two-wheeled products, from complete machines to parts, often turn up for sale at the event. For example, the swap meet caters not only to motorcycles, but also to scooters and, occasionally vintage bicycles and everything that goes along with the hobby including riding gear and tools.Personally, I found a really cool Belstaff motorcycle jacket here, and my husband Fred has found parts and pieces for projects that do help move them along, Whitby says.About four years ago Whitby even found a new-to-her vintage motorcycle project.A 1972 Suzuki T350 rolled in, I sat on it and my wallet fell open, she says. I brought it home and now have restored it.Whitby maintains the swap meet often offers something for just about every brand thats out there, from Japanese to European to British to American. And its not just a swap meet for motorcycles and parts, its also a large social event, she adds. I know folks who only see each other annually at this particular meet.Whitby expects about 100 vendor tables will be set up in the Millarville riding arena on Sept. 8, and says the event routinely draws close to 800 visitors. A portion of funds raised is donated annually to the Legion Poppy Trust, and tables are often given to local motorcycle charities to help them promote their own event.Millarville is a destination, its not a swap meet thats just around the corner in the city, Whitby says. That means a number of people choose to ride out and check out the event, but we also see motorcyclists who might be riding by drawn in by our signs on the highway. For many, its a first-time visit, and theyre delighted because they had no idea the racetrack or the swap meet existed.IF YOU GOSeventeenth annual Millarville Vintage Motorcycle Swap Meet, hosted by the CVMG-Rocky Mountain Section on Sunday, Sept. 8 in the new riding arena on the grounds of the Millarville Racing and Agricultural Society approx. 35 minutes south of Calgary just off Hwy 22 and Hwy. 549 (306097 192 Street, Millarville, AB). This guy built a working ‘Star Wars’ land speeder in his garage
YouTuber colinfurze has taken Star Wars fandom to the next level by building a full-sized replica of the land speeder Luke Skywalker drives in A New Hope.Showcasing some old-school metal-forming techniques used by coachbuilders, Colin is able to bring a small model of the iconic craft up to 1:1 scale. In fact, he uses the toy speedster replica to get the real things proportions and details right. The body sits atop a stripped-down golf cart, which he bought on eBay for 1,300 pounds (about $2,200). In fact, most of the parts used for the build were sourced from eBay, which sponsored the build. The final product is incredible, and the detail Colin managed to translate into the full-sized replica is immense, right down to the exposed engine cover and the interior. Colin doesnt mention how long it took to build the land speeder, but were guessing it was more than a few days. According to Colin, there have been other fibreglass reproductions, but this is likely the first steel speeder replica ever made. This isnt the first Star Wars build hes done, either; previous projects include an AT-AT tree house of sorts; and Darth Vaders TIE fighter. However, this is the first project hes done that actually moves, and can be driven. The channel is not limited to Star Wars stuff; hes also built a jet-powered go-kart, a hoverbike and a hot tub BMW.Still to come from the YouTuber is a video of the vehicle being driven, and he also says that it will eventually get a paint

Mazda mulls over making the MX-5 electric
2019 Mazda MX-5 MiataNick Tragianis / Driving The rumour mill is churning out Mazda news the next-gen MX-5 could get electrified, either partially as a hybrid or fully as a battery powered EV, in the near future. Autocar in the UK reports that sources within the brand, including research and development head Ichiro Hirose and brand and design chief Ikuo Maeda, are aware drivers of the sporty little MX-5 are seeking environmentally friendly alternatives. And apparently the brand is willing to play along. “The preference of people who enjoy driving sports cars might be changing, so we need to think about what direction society is going,” Maeda told Autocar. “We want to look at the best powertrain to keep the vehicle lightweight, but because of the diversifying requirements and preference, we need to explore various options. “I don’t have the answer now but we need to make a vehicle that people can own without worrying that they are not being eco-friendly.”So, regardless of whether or how the little drop-top sports car is given the “e” prefix, Mazda promises to keep it true to its lightweight motoring roots, reiterating to Autocar that “The lightweighting and compact size are essential elements of MX-5, so even if we apply electrification, we have to make sure it really helps to achieve the lightweighting of the vehicle.”The latest Mazda Miata MX-5 got a healthy jolt of power, and any electrification is likely to do more of the same. We’re open to the idea, but will certainly be holding Mazda to its word on keeping the car light on its feet.LISTEN: In this week’s episode, we talk about all the electrifying news coming out of the 2019 Los Angeles Auto Show with Postmedia Driving senior writer David Booth, including Ford’s bold Mustang Mach-e SUV. Limited-run Bentley Continental GT celebrates Pikes Peak win
Bentley has revealed a special edition of the Continental GT W12 in celebration of its record-breaking run at the Pikes Peak hillclimb earlier this year. The Continental GT became the fastest production car to ever tackle the 12.42-mile course, with American racer Rhys Millen setting a record time of 10min 18.4sec. Limited to just 15 examples, the commemorative Continental GT wears a similar ‘Radium’ green-and-black livery to the record-breaking car, applied by Bentley’s in-house bespoke division, Mulliner. Buyers can also have the number 100 painted across the car’s front grille in recognition of Bentley’s centenary in 2019. Also featured are a carbonfibre bodykit, contrasting black trim elements, bright green brake callipers and matching sidewall markings on the tyres. The 22in alloy wheels are taken from the Mulliner line of vehicle options and finished in gloss black. The ‘Radium’ theme continues inside, where the seats are trimmed in black Alcantara with green stitching. A map of the Pikes Peak course has been applied to the carbonfibre dashboard, while the steering wheel features the same honeycomb stitching pattern and centre stripe as the race car. Additionally, the treadplates and headrests feature a Pikes Peak logo, while the speaker grilles have been replaced with bespoke green items. The powertrain is unmodified, with the twin-turbocharged W12 petrol engine producing the same 626bhp and 664lb ft. It can push the car from 0-62mph in 3.7sec and on to a top speed of 207mph. Chris Craft, member of the board for sales, marketing and aftersales at Bentley, said the new limited edition “reflects Bentley’s spirit of endeavour, one that has been a constant throughout the last 100 years and remains at the beating heart of the company”. Prices for the special edition have not been confirmed, but the Pikes Peak edition can be expected to command a significant premium over the standard Continental GT’s £159,100 starting price. Bentley has launched several limited-run models to celebrate its 100th birthday, paying tribute to historic motorsport successes, iconic models and company founder Walter Owen

News Roundup: A pickup tug-of-war war, a 1,000-hp Mustang, plus an actual pony car
Welcome to our weekly round-up of the biggest breaking stories on Driving.ca from this past week. Get caught up and ready to get on with the weekend, because it’s hard keeping pace in a digital traffic jam. Here’s what you missed while you were away.Ford wants a rematch of the F-150 vs. Cybertruck tug-of-war, sort ofThe Blue Oval wasn’t pleased with its brief inclusion in Tesla’s Cybertruck reveal. During the live event, Elon Musk played a clip of the Cybertruck running away (uphill!) with Ford’s popular pickup hitched to its back bumper in a tug of war, the F-150 struggling to gain any sort of traction. In response, a VP at Ford called the contest unfair and demanded a rematch, saying Tesla cherry-picked a two-wheel-drive F-150. But when Musk said “Bring it on,” other talking heads at Ford seemed to walk the challenge back, telling Fox News it had been intended as a “tongue in cheek” comment. The custom big rig dubbed “Thor24” lines up two 12-cylinder Detroit diesel engines that, along with a nitrous boost pack, can get its 32,000-pound frame up to 200 km/h. Four 12-foot chutes help to bring it back down. US$12M seems like a deal, because that flaming paint job is priceless. But Lebanon Ford in Ohio was able to saddle the pony with 1,000 horsepower from a Whipple supercharger or D1X Procharger, an upgraded fuel pump, a larger heat exchanger. The wildest part is the price of just CDN$73,000, which undercuts the 797-horsepower Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat Redeye by $20,000. The Internet’s most hilarious reactions to the Tesla Cybertruck revealIt was big news. Partly because it’s an electric pickup finally here, partly because it looks like a couple of stacked triangles, and partly because, in the process of revealing it live, Tesla unintentionally broke not one but two windows while attempting to display their durability. Twitter almost instantly had a roundup of hilarious memes reacting to the Cybertruck, while Wall Street showed its uncertainty with a 6-per-cent drop in Tesla stock price, and more than a few people pointed out its proximity in looks to a certain time-travelling coupe. Chevrolet will lose money on base-price C8 Corvettes: report
PHOTO: GMGM The new C8 Corvette starts at a surprisingly low price for something with Italian supercars in its sights, but it seems GM is swallowing the difference to make it that low.Motor Trend reports the $59,995 starting price charged to U.S. buyers $69,998 in Canada will only stick around for one year. And if it doesnt go up by $20,000, the company will continue losing money on the lower trim levels, according to what a senior GM official told the publication. Its not surprising, really, given that the C8 marked such a radical departure from the front-engine C7. Even minor changes to a vehicle can run into the millions, taking into account the cost of redesign, retooling, any adjustments or training at the assembly level, any new crash test requirements, and even the far more mundane, such as stocking new replacement parts or rewriting the repair manuals. With a major change such as C7 to C8, costs can get closer to or even over the billion-dollar mark. Its hard enough to make that back on a volume-seller, and even tougher on a halo car that will end up in far fewer driveways.Motor Trend said the base price of the last-gen C7 rose nearly $2,000 the year after it debuted, and then went up another $2,000 the following year. The GM source said that, with the C8, the price would have to go through the roof in order to cover GMs cost.Keeping the initial price down might well prove worth it, in terms of the buzz it created and how many buyers are eager to plunk down their deposits and its likely many people will come in for the starting price, but go home with something higher up on the trim scale. For American buyers, $59,995 gets you a 1LT trim, while the 2LT starts at $67,295, and the 3LT begins at $71,945. Thats even before you start piling on options that range from premium paint colours ($500 to $995) and specialty wheels ($2,695), to a carbon-fibre roof at $2,495, or the Z51 Performance Package for $5,000.Motor Trend reports that GM loses money on every C8 priced under $80,000, but that customers also drop off the radar when a vehicle climbs over $100,000. It looks like adjusting the C8s price tag is going to be a very careful balancing game for the

The newest New York City taxi cab is — the Tesla Model 3
In addition to its five stock colours for consumers, you might soon see Teslas Model 3 in bright yellow. The all-electric sedan has been approved for use as a taxicab in New York City.According to Autoblog, the Model 3 was recently added to the list of vehicles permitted by the citys Taxi and Limousine Commission (TLC).Its the first all-electric car officially approved for taxi use since the first electric carriages that drove alongside horse-drawn cabs in the 1890s. The Model 3 was one of some twenty cars added to the list.In a response to Autoblog, the TLC said it didnt know who submitted the request to approve the Tesla. The city issues Alternative Fuel Medallions, but up until now, the published rules have stated these are valid only for a vehicle that is a hybrid electric vehicle or is powered by compressed natural gas that is manufactured by an original equipment manufacturer for the general commercial or consumer market. In addition, such a vehicle has to meet the same standard as other taxis, including minimum exterior size and interior volume, luggage capacity and air conditioning. Vehicles with internal combustion engines cant make more than 295 horsepower, and the Tesla meets that restriction in all but the Model 3s high-performance versions.New York previously designated an official taxicab, which most cab owners were required to purchase. In 2011, the Nissan NV200 Taxi of Tomorrow was named the official vehicle, but it was a controversial decision since it pushed out the previous greener choice, the Ford Escape Hybrid. Some believed the loss of the lucrative New York taxi market was the reason behind Fords decision to ditch the hybrid version which had far fewer consumer sales when the Escape was redesigned for 2013.In 2018, the TLC dropped the NV200 purchase requirement and approved a list of 30 possible vehicles, such as the Toyota Camry. To qualify as a taxi, the Model 3 as with every other vehicle will have to be equipped with a roof light, medallion and decals, an interior partition and cameras to photograph passengers, and be painted yellow. It will be allowed to remain in service for a maximum of seven years.LISTEN: In this week’s episode, we talk about all the electrifying news coming out of the 2019 Los Angeles Auto Show with Postmedia Driving senior writer David Booth, including Ford’s bold Mustang Mach-e SUV. Nissan’s 2020 Qashqai starts at $21,498 in Canada
The newest version of Nissan Canada’s second-best selling model, the Qashqai, has been given a price tag for 2020. With a fresh exterior design and a host of new and upgraded safety features coming standard, the popular crossover, which lives between the Kicks and Rogue in the brand’s lineup, will start at $21,498 for the base S MT front-wheel-drive model. Front-wheel-drive comes standard on the S and SV trims, while intelligent all-wheel-drive is offered on the S, SV and SL trims. For that base offering, the 2020 version rings in at a minimum of $1,300 more than the previous model-year Qashqai. But that additional stack of cash does earn a fair bit of extra safety and comfort tech, including a six-way manual adjustable driver’s seat, rear-seat heating and cooling, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, intelligent auto headlights, traffic sign recognition, driver attention assist, rear sonar, rear intelligent emergency braking, high-beam assist, lane-departure warning and intelligent emergency braking with pedestrian detection, all of which comes standard. As options, Nissan will also throw in perks like ProPILOT Assist, door-to-door nav and NissanConnect powered by SiriusXM. The new Qashqai received a visual refresh, too, creating an all-around sportier feel. A reconfigured front end with updated LED headlights, a V-motion grille and an aggressive hood provide a more angular first impression, which is backed up by new 19-inch alloy wheels and visually adjusted taillights.Power, meanwhile, comes from a 141-horsepower 2.0-litre four-cylinder mated to either an Xtronic transmission with eco mode; or a six-speed manual in the S FWD model. Above the S MT FWD base model sits the S Xtronic FWD ($24,198), SV Xtronic FWD ($26,798), S Xtronic AWD ($26,198), SV Xtronic AWD ($28,798), SL Xtronic AWD ($31,848) and the SL Xtronic PLAT AWD ($33,998). First Drive: 2020 Audi S8
2020 Audi S8Graeme Fletcher / Driving BARCELONA, Spain The executive super-sedan segment has a new entrant: Audis latest S8 is on sale in Canada right now for $151,600, and in the long wheelbase variant only. In the simplest of terms, its a full-sized Bahn burner with everything from a sharper style and sorted handling to a lavish interior, and it touches everything between. The story starts under the hood with a 4.0-litre, twin-turbocharged V8 that has been tweaked to give it a serious turn of speed. As used in the standard A8, this engine produces 460 horsepower and 487 lb.-ft. of torque. Cranking the turbos boost pressure to an astounding 26 PSI bumps the output to 563 horsepower and 590 lb.-ft. of torque at 2,000 rpm. To state the obvious, the extra 103 horsepower and pound-feet torque makes an enormous difference to the turn of speed. Almost enough to justify the ceramic brake option, with its 10-piston front calipers, a wise buy. Sadly, at $10,500, thats just not the case. The engine works with an eight-speed automatic transmission and Audis Quattro all-wheel-drive system. The transmission is a slick shifter that, depending on the drive mode selected, either slips up and down the cogs with a near-invisible shift quality, or it bumps up and down the gears with the speed needed to maintain momentum under hard acceleration. The all-wheel-drive system, under normal driving conditions, sends 40 per cent of the drive to the front wheels and 60 to the rear. However, it can send up to 70 per cent to the front wheels and up to 85 to the rear, should the need arise. The ebb and flow of power is seamless, and its superb at preventing the power from melting the rubber when the gas pedal is mashed. The combination makes for one seriously fast car the run from rest to 100 km/h comes in at 3.9 seconds. Thats very good, but its the mid-range where the S8 really catches fire the 80 to 120 km/h passing move clocks in at 2.6 seconds and the pace doesnt let up until the driver decides it isnt worth having a roadside chat with the local constabulary. Thats just one side of the story, though: The addition of cylinder deactivation and a 48-volt mild hybrid system improves fuel economy when the gas pedal isnt buried. A test average of 11.1 L/100 kilometres was much better than expected, given the S8 wasnt exactly driven with an eye to conservation.Another highlight is the ride quality delivered by the active air suspension. Its about as good as it gets, in terms of delivering two very different cars in a single package. The key is the predictive nature of the suspension; at speeds up to 70 km/h, the system uses the forward-facing camera to look at the road. When it detects a speed bump or the like, it changes the load-leveling air suspension and damping ahead of time to ready the car for the impending jolt. The result is an impeccable ride that sets a new standard for comfort sharp jolts are tamed to the point where the S8 wafts over the road and its imperfections. Better yet, the new Comfort+ drive mode uses the active anti-roll bars that control body roll to lean the car into the corner by as much as three-degrees an electric motor is used to control the left and right halves of the front and rear anti-roll bars to create the lean. The result is much less lateral force on the riders. As with the engine, that only tells one side of the story. The S8 also comes with dynamic all-wheel-steering and a sport differential with real-time torque vectoring. At speeds up to 60 km/h, the rear wheels turn as much as five degrees in the opposite direction to the front wheels in a parking lot, this reduces the turning circle by 1.1 meters. At speed, the dynamic steering and torque vectoring combine to point the long-wheelbase sedan into a corner with the precision expected out of an RS 6. On the twisty roads outside Barcelona, the S8 bobbed, weaved, and carved its way through decreasing-radius corners and hairpins without deviating from the desired line. Factor in the all-wheel-drive system and optional P265/35R21 tires, and the S8 behaves like a full-on sports car albeit one with a lavishly attired cabin. On that note, the S8s interior more than lives up to the high standards set by the rest of the car. From the buttery leather and high-tech accents, to the thin pinstripe-like ambient lighting, the sense of luxury and space is there regardless of where one sits the L model stretches the wheelbase by 130 millimetres, which brings limo-like rear-seat legroom and superb comfort. Sitting back there, the driver seems to be a time zone ahead. As has become the Audi norm, instrumentation is handled by the companys Virtual Cockpit setup it allows everything, from conventional instrumentation to the map, to be viewed. The centre stack is then dominated by two touchscreens; the upper unit looks after all of the infotainment, phone, vehicle settings, and navigation functions, while the lower screen is for the
