Fiat Chrysler is recalling 10,485 Jeep Cherokee SUVs in Canada because the transmission could accidentally shift into neutral while driving, keeping the vehicle from moving forward.Including Jeeps sold in the U.S., some 91,650 vehicles are affected, specifically Cherokees from the 2014 model year equipped with the 3.2-litre V6.On affected vehicles, a stuck valve in the transmission valve body can keep the clutch from deactivating, which may shift them into neutral while moving and cause an abrupt stop, increasing the risk of a crash.Fiat Chrysler hasnt outlined a specific fix yet for the issue, but nevertheless expects to begin the recall early August. No crashes or injuries associated with the issue have been

This is the battery-powered SUV racing the new Extreme E off-road series
For what seems like ages, the founder of the fledgling Formula E race series has been talking about upping the electrified ante with an off-road series. On what type of tracks will it run? Who are the drivers? What will the trucks look like?We now have an answer to the last question, at least, thanks to a big reveal at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in the U.K. last Friday.Called the Odyssey 21, the steroidal off-road machine zipped up Lord Marchs driveway under the command of Indy 500 champ Gil de Ferran in what was the prototypes first public display. Built by a French company called Spark, it was powered by batteries designed by none other than the Williams Formula One team.Using its healthy-but-undisclosed amount of right-now thrust, the Odyssey 21 is capable of hurtling itself through the atmosphere to 100 km/h from rest in about 4.5 seconds before topping out at about 200 km/h. Non-racing conditions could stretch its total range to 200 km. The plan is to allow manufacturer teams to use their own powertrain and bodywork so the units looks more like road-going SUVs.As for racing locations, series honcho Alejandro Agag says they have identified three of the five locations needed, including an altitude and jungle site along with a desert location. Ocean and polar locales are still in the works. Agag also said the series would be open to the idea of hydrogen-propelled cars when the technology permits.Formula E has seen many advancements despite being a relatively young racing series, including format changes and battery improvements. All this gives hope to the reality of this Extreme E series in

Older Teslas could get self-driving-capable chip this year: Elon Musk
A Tesla car arrives at a service center in Los Angeles, California on March 4, 2019.Mark Ralston / Getty via AP Older Tesla models will be most likely retrofitted near the end of this year with a chip powerful enough to allow for full self-driving, according to a tweet-reply from the companys CEO.Teslas full self-driving FSD chip the first its designed in-house has been installed in Model S, X and 3 cars since about March 2019, chief executive Elon Musk said.He plans now to offer it as a free upgrade to owners of 2017-and-newer Tesla models who opted for the US$6,000 Full Self-Driving package upon purchase, reports The Verge. Thats about half-a-million cars.End of Q4, most likely Elon Musk (@elonmusk) July 8, 2019Musk boasts that this new FSD chip offers 21 times the processing power of the Nvidia chips installed in Teslas prior to 2019, though that company says the claim is bogus, say The Verge. The hardware upgrade which includes two of the chips for redundancy will be powerful enough to allow for complete self-driving capability, if Musk is to be believed, though of course the software that allows for that sort of autonomy is still under development. For now, the Full Self-Driving package ordered by so many Tesla customers equipped their car solely with a Navigate on Autopilot feature, which the automaker says lets the car handle on-ramp to off-ramp highway driving, including self-directed lane changes and interchange navigation. The name of the package has come under criticism for apparently advertising more than it could

Aston Martin DBS GT Zagato: ultra-rare special previewed
Aston Martin has released more realistic renderings of the new DBS GT Zagato, a limited-run reworking of the DBS Superleggera created to celebrate Italian styling house Zagato’s centenary. Although still digital images, the new shots remove some of the exaggerated proportions of the previous renders, showing what we can expect for the final version to be revealed in the coming months. The new machine is limited to 19 models, and is being sold exclusively as a pair with a DB4 GT Zagato Continuation model. The DBZ Centenary Collection will cost £6 million, plus taxes. The DBS GT Zagato is an extensively reworked version of a DBS Superleggera, and takes styling cues from the original DB4 GT Zagato. The car’s styling was conducted by Zagato and Aston Martin’s design team. It features a ‘double-bubble’ roof styled after the original, which runs from the front windscreen to the tail of the car, replacing the rear windscreen. The front of the car has also been restyled, with a similar bubble theme, new headlights and a reworked Zagato front grille. The car gains a unique wheel design too. The mechanical underpinnings of the DBS GT Zagato will be unchanged from the Superleggera, including the 715bhp turbocharged 5.2-litre V12. The previously announced DB4 GT Zatago Continuation will be offered as a track-only car, because the specifications will exactly match the 58-year-old original design. That will include an updated version of the original’s straight-six, 380bhp engine. Customer deliveries of the DB4 GT Zagato Continuation will begin at the end of this year, with deliveries of the DBS GT Zagato following in late

Slow transition to electric fells BMW’s CEO after one term
In this file photo taken on March 20, 2019 Harald Krueger, CEO of German car maker BMW, looks on during a press conference to present the groups financial results for 2018, in Munich, southern Germany.Christoph Stache / Getty When BMW picked Harald Krueger to run the company more than four years ago, he was the perfect candidate.Young, with a personable manner and decades of experience across the company, Krueger appeared ready to guide the venerable luxury carmaker into a future of electric, self-driving and shared automobiles. But on Friday two weeks before his contract came up for renewal Krueger quit. Instead of leading the company through the biggest upheaval in a generation, he was felled by the transition as he failed to provide a roadmap to the future. In his farewell note, he cited the enormous exertion demanded of BMW employees as the company grapples with the unprecedented demands of the shift. In the past few years, the industry has been shaped by enormous changes, which have brought about more transformation than in the previous 30 years, Krueger said in the note.Krueger, 53, inherited a company at the top of its game. Under the previous CEO now chairman Norbert Reithofer, BMW had outsold Mercedes-Benz and Audi for a decade. The company was a pioneer in electric vehicles with the i3 city car introduced in 2013. It was the first major automaker to use lightweight carbon fiber in mass-market models. And its traditional business of sumptuous-but-sporty sedans and SUVs was as robust as ever. But soon after Krueger took over, sales of the i3 hit a wall, calling into question the electric push. The plan to use carbon fiber turned out to be too costly. The strong-willed Reithofer never really exited the stage. The diesel crisis that shook rival Volkswagen sullied the reputation of the entire German car industry, and more recently the U.S.-China trade spat has hit profits. As Krueger puzzled over how to reinvent BMW for the electric age, it was almost a year before he presented his strategic vision which was a bust. He delayed BMWs next major electric car, effectively squandering its leadership in the field. Key engineers quit to set up an electric-vehicle startup. And to help pay for the shift, Krueger doubled down on gas-guzzling, super-charged luxury cars such as the 8-Series sports car and full-size X7 SUV.At Kruegers first major public appearance, at the Frankfurt car show in September 2015, the CEO collapsed on stage minutes into a presentation. He blamed the episode on dehydration and too many hours flying, but it was an apt metaphor for his leadership, and the event haunted him with obvious discomfort speaking publicly in the months that followed. The company has since watched Mercedes-Benz parent Daimler reclaim the luxury crown. Tesla has become the face of the electric-car revolution. And everyone from Ford to Ferrari is rushing to develop electric models, with scores of new offerings scheduled to hit the market in the next five years.BMW took its head start in electric cars for granted and then failed to hit the accelerator again when needed, said Christian Ludwig, an analyst at Bankhaus Lampe in Bielefeld, Germany.Kruegers departure serves as a warning to the new executives running at least a half-dozen of the industrys top companies.Electric vehicles offer nowhere near the same returns as combustion vehicles. And selling electrics remains a struggle without major incentives as consumers balk at patchy charging infrastructure, high prices and limited driving range.Like Krueger, most of the new executives come from engineering backgrounds. But theyll be required to master technology-driven trends such as ride-hailing, while contending with Silicon Valley giants like Tesla, which is aiming at BMWs bread-and-butter 3-Series sedan and VWs Golf with its Model 3; and Waymo, the self-driving unit of Alphabet

This ’67 up for sale may be the most expensive Corvette ever
This is a 1967 Chevrolet Corvette L88, one of the most powerful and rarest cars to ever come out of America, and its coming up for auction at Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale. In case you are unaware of the L88, that letter and two digits carry a pretty hefty weight in the automobile world. While the 427 Tri-Power was the hot rod most people could put in their driveway, the L88 required a little more cajones to own, and had almost one-quarter more of the Vettes base price tag added onto it.The big news is the engine: the 427-cubic-inch V8 in the L88 boasted 12.5:1 compression, a 850-cfm Holley carburetor, and was essentially a rectangular-ported-head monster.Chevrolet said it made 430 horsepower, but in reality, output was somewhere in the neighbourhood of 500. It was a full-blown race engine you could put in your skinny-tired plastic two-seater.According to Hagerty, this is the first L88 Corvette to roll off the production line, making it exceptionally special, as well as exceptionally valuable. It also has the benefit of some storied race history at the hands of Tony DeLorenzo, who piloted it to a few SCCA victories. The car has been restored a few times, and now sits in original showroom configuration.A concours-restored number-one-condition 1967 L88 set records at auction not long ago when it sold for US$3.45 million. This L88 isnt in as good a shape, being described as a number-two-plus, but being the first L88 ever built could help it hit a high number.Hagerty predicts this L88 will sell for approximately 20 per cent more than the previous best-selling Corvette L88, which means it could go above the US$4-million

Mini Electric revealed
Mini Electric revealed The new EV from Mini has been a highly anticipated model The Mini Electric has been revealed at the brand’s 60th anniversary celebrations in Oxford. The new pure-electric hatchback will have the performance of a Cooper S, with zero-tailpipe emissions, and a range of up to 144 miles (WLTP) on a single charge. Mini’s highly-anticipated EV will be able to complete the 0-62mph sprint in 7.3 seconds, thanks to a 135 kW (184 hp) motor producing 270 Nm of torque. A 32,6 kWh battery – of which 28.9 kWh is usable – allows for the range, which is low by current mass-market standards, but there is a trend developing for premium, compact EVs designed primarily for urban driving. The Honda e will be a clear Mini Electric rival, though is expected to cost more, with reports around the £30,000 mark. Mini by contrast has priced the Electric hatch pretty keenly, at £24,400 (inc. Plug-in Car Grant). Charging will be possible at up to 11 kW AC, and 50 kW DC, with Mini fitting a CCS inlet to the Mini Electric, sitting behind what would be a conventional fuel filler flap on the car’s off-side rear three/quarters. The battery has been developed to be a T-shape, fitting in the car’s floor between the front seats and beneath the rear. The Electric is only 145 kg heavier than a petrol-powered Mini Cooper S three-door with automatic transmission. Driving modes will see Sport, Mid, and Green – with added Green + – settings available, and Mini’s famous handling set-up is expected to be retained. It is this combination of ‘go-kart feel’ (as Mini puts it) and instant electric response that makes the Electric such an exciting arrival to the UK’s EV market. A new digital driver’s instrument binnacle has been added to the range, designed for electric-focused displays. The standard 6.5-inch central touchscreen remains from the rest of the Mini line-up which includes navigation, Apple CarPlay, and status update displays. Order books are open now, with customers able to place a £500 deposit for a new Mini Electric. Deliveries are expected in March 2020, with production in Mini’s Oxford plant starting late in 2019.

Volkswagen ID 3: new Nissan Leaf rival seen barely disguised
Volkswagen says the ID 3’s name comes from the firm’s internal nomenclature for the compact A-segment, and the new model’s opening of the third major chapter in the brand’s history, after the Beetle and Golf. The title also “signals the potential for expansion” into bigger and smaller models in the future. Volkswagen sales boss Jürgen Stackmann said that the start of ID pre-booking ushered in “the third major chapter of strategic importance in the history of our brand, following the Beetle and the Golf”. He added: “With the ID 3, we are making the electric car fit for mass mobility.” Stackmann said that the ID 3 represented a “major milestone” for Volkswagen, adding: “The world is currently in a process of transformation. Volkswagen is not only part of, but is also shaping, this transformation. “We are pursuing a focused powertrain strategy. Volkswagen has opted consistently for the battery-electric drive system. This is currently the most efficient technology for reducing CO2 emissions and meeting the ambitious CO2 reduction targets. E-mobility will become our lead technology.” The ID range is understood to be planned to run from one to 10, with the numbers replacing the titles given to previously seen concepts: the ID Crozz SUV, Vizzion saloon, Buzz MPV and van and Roomzz luxury SUV. Autocar has also revealed the firm is working on an entry-level ‘people’s car’. Volkswagen says the ID 3 First edition will be priced at under €40,000 (£34,000) in Germany, with customers in the UK required to pay a £750 deposit. UK pricing details have yet to be confirmed, and the pre-booking will only be open for the 30,000 special editions, although those who secure a slot can cancel their order with a full refund. The UK is one of the “key” markets for the car, alongside Norway, Germany, the Netherlands and France. Customers who pre-book an ID 3 will be able to order their cars after it is launched at this year’s Frankfurt motor show in September. Those orders will become binding in April 2020, with customers able to cancel and obtain a full refund until then. The First edition will be offered in a choice of four colours and three versions, all featuring large wheel rims. There will also be three trim levels – First, First Plus and First Max – although only the Plus trim will be offered in the UK. This will feature “extensive” comfort features including voice control, a navigation system, exterior IQ lighting and a bi-colour exterior and interior design. In the markets where it is available, the range-topping Max trim includes a panoramic sunroof and augmented-reality head-up display. Volkswagen also said the ID 3 First edition will be offered with 2000kWh of free charging at public charging points using the firm’s We Charge app, on a European charging network. That includes charge points on the Ionity network, which is expanding into the UK. VW also has a deal with Tesco to install 600 rapid chargers at its supermarkets by 2020, although it is not yet confirmed if access to these would be part of the 2000kWh deal. The ID 3 is 4100mm long, 1800mm wide and 1530mm high, making it 155mm longer, 9mm wider and 77mm higher than the seventh-generation Golf, although the electric powertrain means that it is set to offer substantially more interior space. Stackmann added: “From the outside, the ID 3 will be as large as a Golf. In the interior, it will be as spacious as a medium-sized car.” ID 3 production run will start at Volkswagen’s Zwickau factory near the end of this year. The firm is aiming to deliver more than 100,000 examples in 2020, with 110,000 on average per year afterwards. That is part of VW’s goal to sell more than 10 million electric vehicles in the next 10

Ferrari one-off models have five-year waiting list
The growing trend for one-off Ferraris is in response to clients’ increasing demands for extreme personalisation, says Ferrari commercial and marketing boss Enrico Galliera. Such is demand, Galliera says unique models “have the longest waiting list of all our product lines” at four to five years. “The client has not only a unique car but a unique experience working with the designer in the process. It’s the pinnacle of Ferrari,” he commented. The Italian supercar maker has recently revealed two one-offs, the P80/C and SP3JC. Unique Ferrari models are not available to anyone, explains Galliera: “It is offered to top clients only. We receive requests from clients, and it won’t be considered unless they are in a pool of our top 250 clients or so.” Despite growing demand, Ferrari will only produce two to three one-offs a year, to ensure the access to such models remains exclusive and because production capacity won’t allow more. The P80/C, based on the 488 GT3 race car, has the longest development time of any Ferrari one-off made to date. Galliera said a typical one-off takes 18 to 24 months to complete, but this took between two and a half and three years. “This car was never going to be a road-legal car, so there were no limitations on what we could do,” he explained. A number of top-end car makers, including McLaren, Rolls-Royce and Bentley, have shown interest in producing unique models in recent years, no doubt largely motivated by strong profit margins and brand
