Ford will close six European plants as part of global downsizing

A contractor works on the yet-to-be-completed engine production line at a Ford factory on January 13, 2015 in Dagenham, England.Carl Court / Getty Ford will eliminate about 20 per cent of its workforce across Europe and close six factories in a sweeping overhaul aimed at reviving the money-losing region as the company also moves to prepare for the future of electric and self-driving cars. The restructuring will involve reducing its manufacturing footprint in Europe to 18 facilities by the end of 2020 from 24 at the beginning of this year.Germany, the U.K. and Russia will be hardest hit by the cuts, which total about 12,000 regular staff as well as workers employed at joint ventures, Ford said Thursday.Separating employees and closing plants are the hardest decisions we make, Stuart Rowley, Fords president of Europe, said in a statement. We are moving forward and focused on building a long-term sustainable future. The cutbacks are a key part of Chief Executive Officer Jim Hacketts US$11-billion restructuring, which also includes 7,000 salaried job cuts worldwide. Hackett, 64, is trying to boost Fords bottom line by exiting the slow-selling sedan market in the U.S. to focus on high-profit sport-utility vehicles and trucks. In Europe, where Ford is the top-selling brand in the U.K., the automaker also is backing away from the traditional passenger-car business to focus on commercial vans and trucks. We have a winning hand in Europe and its called commercial vehicles, then-Chief Financial Officer Bob Shanks said at a May 15 Goldman Sachs conference in New York. Well have a smaller portfolio of passenger vehicles.Ford is cutting costs as it pours billions into electric and self-driving cars that are seen as the future of the auto industry. The company is close to sealing a deal with Volkswagen to join forces to develop these

Vancouver driver has McLaren impounded 10 minutes after buying it

In what is surely one of the shortest terms of vehicle ownership in Canadian history, a driver in British Columbia had their brand-new McLaren 600LT impounded just minutes after driving it off the lot June 17.According to police reports, the 39-year-old gearhead picked up his supercar in West Vancouver and quickly caned it up to 161 km/h in a 90-km/h zone. The ever-vigilant constabulary nabbed him on Highway 1 and impounded the car. While the officer was conducting the investigation, the driver allegedly stated that they had just left the dealership after purchasing the vehicle, 10 minutes prior, West Vancouver police said in a news release.Price tags on the 600LT can easily crest a quarter-million in this country. It was towed away from the scene and impounded for seven days. In a statement, cops said the driver was ticketed $368 or about 0.1 per cent of the cars value for excessive speeding.Heres a thought: should the cost of tickets be proportional to the value of ones car? After all, a $368 receipt from the gendarmes is about 5.25 per cent the worth of your authors own Dodge Charger. If the miscreant in that McLaren had to pay the same percentage, it would work out to somewhere north of $13,000. Would that be any more of a deterrent to deep-pocketed scofflaws?Thats a deep well of debate best left for another day. For now, know that theres one less McLaren 600LT on Vancouver roads at least for the next week. Stay safe out there,

Schwarzenegger pranks new car shoppers into buying electric vehicles

A video posted to Arnold Schwarzeneggers YouTube channel late June shows the famous actor and former California governor dressing up as a used car salesman and pranking people on the lot.The goal? Annoy them with his pro-gasoline schtick so much theyll consider nothing but an electric car.The spot, which the actor pulled off with California EV non-profit Veloz, starts off with an action movie-style intro, with Arnie getting into character as Howard Kleiner, a dealer rep set on selling people gas-guzzling muscle cars instead of new, greener tech. The character is perfect for Schwarzenegger, who is known for mercilessly killing bad guys and driving a Hummer in movies, we mean, but probably in real life, too.Schwarzenegger goes on to talk people out of buying electric cars, and without explaining every joke in the video, well just say he goes a little over-the-top with the benefits gas cars provide, and throws in a few of his own movie quotes.Honestly, if these are real people and not actors, its pretty incredible none of them picked up Arnies thick accent immediately. From the moment we hear his voice over the PA system, its pretty much obvious who it is.In the end, besides being good for a laugh, the ad serves a purpose: encouraging people to consider alternative-fuel vehicles. Schwarzenegger himself has a few electric cars for daily use, saving the Humvees for special occasions (though hes got an electric example of one of those,

Bentley rounds off centenary trio with Continental Number 9 Edition

Bentley has paid tribute to its 1929 Blower race car with the new Continental GT Number 1 Edition by Mulliner. Based on the Continental GT Convertible, the Number 1 can be had in either red or grey and features a number of bespoke styling elements that, the firm says, “celebrate some of the pioneering individuals from the marque’s first 100 years”.  The Number 1 is equipped with a Centenary trim package that adds commemorative badges to the bootlid and wheels, unique LED lighting patterns and bespoke interior elements. The number 1 is painted on the grille, in reference to the brand’s historic motorsport markings, and a carbonfibre body kit is fitted as standard. Further styling upgrades include 18-carat gold badging, jewel-encrusted oil and fuel filler caps, and 22in alloy wheels finished in dark red or gloss black.  The Continental’s rotating infotainment display now features a miniature replica of the Bentley Blower’s distinctive wheel spinner, formed from a piece of piston taken from the original car. The special edition is powered by the standard model’s twin-turbocharged 6.0-litre W12 engine, with power sent through a dual-clutch eight-speed gearbox.  The Number 1 Edition completes a trio of limited-run models Bentley has unveiled as part of its centenary celebrations.  Last year’s Mulsanne W.O. Edition celebrated company founder Walter Owen Bentley, and the recently revealed Continental GT Number 9 was styled after the firm’s 1930 Le Mans racer. As with the earlier cars, just 100 Number 1 models will be made.  The Bentley Blower, named for its prominent supercharger, set the Outer Circuit lap record at the now-closed Brooklands race circuit in Surrey in

Ford shuts down Alabama dealership’s ‘shotgun, Bible and flag’ sales incentive

Alabama is a strange place. Where else in the world would the promise of a free gun, a Bible and American flag be used to sell cars so effectively that the actual automaker would have to step in to put a stop to it? Because we’re not making this up. It’s happening. Now. In Alabama. Down in the town of Chatom, the local dealership, Chatom Ford, thought it’d honour America’s upcoming independence celebration with a special promotion it called “God, Guns and Freedom.” The promo offered anyone buying a car at the dealership a free Bible, a U.S. flag and a certificate good for a 12-gauge shotgun wherever shotguns are sold. “I guess it went viral, as the kids say,” said Koby Palmer, general sales manager at the dealership, in an interview with USA Today, referencing a Facebook video advertising the special, which got over 60,000 views in three days. “We live in a small town of 1,200 people. It’s a very small, rural area. They lean on their religious beliefs, their pride in America and they love to hunt.”Palmer says the dealership sold five vehicles in those three days thanks to the special. The deal was supposed to run until the end of July, but was cut short once Ford caught wind of what was going on.  The Facebook post was replaced with a statement that reads, “Ford Motor Company has asked us to stop running the advertisement. They manufacture the products we are franchised to sell, so we are complying with their request.” However, the dealer and automaker must’ve worked something out, because as of June 27, Chatom Ford is promoting a variation on the “God and Glory” sale once again — no “guns.” Now the voucher for a shotgun is instead a certificate for “whatever you want.” That points to Ford’s hang-up quite possibly being on that particular part of the promotion.Well, Happy Independence Day, Murica. Please celebrate

Ford creates off-road Tremor package for Super Duty

The 2020 F-Series Super Duty is delivering next-level capability in an all-new way – the Tremor Off-Road Package. Tremor pushes the boundaries of Super Duty off-road capability with new hardware and tech to handle rough terrain, providing greater towing and payload than Ram Power Wagon. This is the most capable off-road Super Duty ever. Ford has decided to toss its Blue Oval hat into the heavy duty off-road ring with a new package that will be optional on their upcoming 2020 F-250 and F-350 Super Duty pickup trucks. Called the Tremor, it will include a dose of off-road cred meant to bring the fight to Rams Power Wagon and GMCs Sierra HD AT4.Upgrades kick off with a set of 35-inch flotation size Goodyear Wrangler Duratrac meats, tires that Ford alleges are the largest diameter tires available on a heavy-duty pickup. They are on 18-inch wheels, by the way. Tremor-equipped trucks also get a 2-inch front-end lift and shorter air dam, resulting in 10.8 inches of ground clearance.See that puddle? Theres a good chance you can plow on through it thanks to Tremors 33-inch water-fording capability. Also on board are the best approach and departure angles ever found on a Super Duty: 31.6 degrees and 24.5 degrees, respectively. Approach angle and ground clearance measures outstrip Power Wagon, by the way.Two extra tidbits regarding the Tremor: itll be available on a myriad of trims and with joy of joys the Power Stroke diesel. In fact, the package will play with XLT, Lariat, King Ranch, and Platinum on both F-250 and F-350. Thats a huge range of models, ranging from a (relatively) affordable 3/4-ton XLT to a bucks-deluxe Platinum one-tonner.The all-new 7.3-litre gas V8, of which we are yet to learn many details, will be an engine option on Tremor as will the burly 6.7L Power Stroke diesel. An off-road focused diesel-powered heavy duty pickup is a unique weapon that your author can hardly wait to experience. Tremor can be specified on single-rear-wheel SuperCrew trucks with a 6.75-foot box. F-250 models also require the high-capacity trailer tow package. Four-wheel drive is also required, natch.Compared to Power Wagon, the Tremor brings some excellent goods but leaves a few things on the table namely a disconnecting sway bar. Thats a feature that gives the Ram a tremendous amount of wheel travel. A winch is absent from Tremor as well, at least for now. However, Ford takes pains to point out their truck retains outstanding towing and payload capacity, a statement which could be construed as a swipe at Ram, whose Power Wagon doesnt haul as much mail as its non-off road brethren.Your author heartily endorses any new entrant into the off-road arena, especially of the heavy duty variety. Look for the Tremor on order sheets when the 2020 Super Duty shows up later this year, likely at the State Fair of

This Porsche 356 limousine is the ultimate prom vehicle

When automotive collector John Dixon passed away in 2013, he left behind an impressive array of cars and memorabilia in the Ohio-based Taj Ma Garaj. In just a couple months, that entire collection, including this white 1953 Porsche 356 Limousine Custom, will be auctioned off by Canadian-headquartered classic car auction house RM Sotheby’s. The stretched 356 and ultimate prom vehicle is just one piece of the Taj Ma Garaj Collection, which includes over 30 cars, most of which are VW or Porsche models, and more than 350 bits and pieces of collectible goodies. It is, beyond a doubt, theultimate vehicle to take to prom. Originally, the car was but a simple 1953 Porsche “pre-A” 356 coupe, characterized in part by its V-shaped windscreen. Today, the limo retains that unique windscreen – along with other hints of the 356 like its front trunk and twin-carb engine – but has added a fair number of other features, including multiple doors and a soft-top sunroof that appears to have come from an old VW Beetle.Interestingly, however, there isn’t a lot of info on how and by whom the car was converted to its current state. Jalopnik points out there’s a Reutter badge on the rear, indicating they had something to do with the body build, but were they the audacious shop responsible for the generous stretch?  The inside is done in a gorgeous camel brown (brown leather to match brown carpets) that you just dont see today, with a divider to separate passengers and driver, a bar built into passenger compartments, and a bunch of other custom touches you can glimpse in the rest of the photos here.RM Sothebys will put the Porsche limo (estimated to fetch between US$150,000-US$250,000) and the rest of the Taj Ma Garaj Collection up for auction without reserve in Ohio on September

Canada and California join up on vehicle emissions standards

A worker inserts a probe into the tailpipe of a car while performing an emissions test Canada has signed an agreement with California to tackle vehicle-borne pollution even as that state battles President Trump in the courts over tailpipe emissions.Catherine McKenna, Canadas Minister of Environment and Climate Change, signed a new cooperation agreement for cleaner transportation with Mary Nicols, chair of the California Air Resources Board (CARB).Uniquely among the U.S. states, California has the ability to set its own vehicle emissions standards, an authority dating back to the 1960s when it fought the smog that blanketed Los Angeles.Other states can choose to follow them, or to follow federal standards, which are not as stringent. Currently, fourteen states follow California regulations, along with the District of Columbia. The agreement is a commitment for Canada and California to work together on their respective regulations, in an effort to reduce the amount of greenhouse gas (GHG) pollutants coming from vehicles. The Canadian governments goal is for all light-duty vehicles sold in the country to be 100-per-cent zero-emission by 2040. With Canadas current regulations, 2025 model-year light-duty vehicles will burn up to 50 per cent less fuel, and emit 50 per cent less greenhouse gases, than vehicles built in 2008.California requires that automakers have zero-emission vehicles as a growing proportion of their sales, with the goal of 5 million zero-emission vehicles by 2030. One in ten new vehicles sold in California is a plug-in car, and the state accounts for half of all plug-in hybrid cars sold in the United States. The two will also share information on cleaner fuels. Canada is developing a Clean Fuel Standard intended to cut 30 million tonnes of emissions in 2030, the equivalent of retiring 7 million vehicles.California is currently suing the U.S. federal government, after Trump said last summer that the state would no longer be allowed to set its own standards. Trump is also trying to roll back federal standards set under Barack Obama in 2012, which require vehicles to improve in fuel efficiency each year through 2025. Canada aligned with the United States on Obamas stricter 2012 regulations, but is now reviewing that commitment in light of Trumps attempt to scrap the rules. In a statement, the David Suzuki Foundation, based in Vancouver, said that joining with jurisdictions like California in maintaining strong regulations is the right direction for Canada and puts the U.S. federal government, which is trying to weaken standards, on the wrong page. But the Canadian Automobile Dealers Association (CADA) said that aligning with a single state runs counter to the benefits of a single national standard with the United States. It said that while the Canadian new-car sector is committed to fuel economy improvements, Any movement away from a harmonized approach will hinder choice and increase costs for Canadian

Ford to launch three new model names by 2024 in Europe

Ford’s rollout of its redesigned European business plan will result in a radical overhaul of its large car range, as the maker confirms three new model nameplates for the region in the next five years. The firm has stated in a release that it is “freshening and expanding its vehicle-line-up in Europe”, with the three new nameplates coming  “as it continues to grow its utility vehicle portfolio,” The new models, which are in addition to the new Kuga family SUV, Puma small crossover and not-for-UK Explorer, also include the “Mustang-inspired fully electric performance utility” model, as Ford dubs it.  Stuart Rowley, Ford of Europe president, told Autocar that the European focus is on an expansion of its “family utility lineup”, but wouldn’t confirm specific names or models that will be replaced.  “We are very focused in orienting our portfolio with where consumers are going. Many buyers are moving into the utility space, but for us the key question is where buyers are going next”. When asked if these new cars would indirectly replace slow-selling D-segment models such as the Mondeo, Galaxy and S-Max, Rowley said the three models “remain part of our product portfolio for now. However, we need to adapt to the changing market”.  Alongside this announcement, Ford has released a status report of its European business strategy changes, which will see three new ‘business groups’ – Commercial Vehicles, Passenger vehicles and Imports – established. The organisational changes to implement this will come into force on July 1st. The restructure will means a substantial number of job losses, from a factory worker level up to a managerial rethink. Ford employs around 53,000 people across its European operation, so the cuts represent a total of 22% of its workforce. Including Russia, around 12,000 jobs will be “impacted”, including 2000 salaried positions set to be axed. Around 3,000 jobs will be “affected” in the UK from now until the end of 2020, including 1700 jobs at Bridgend.  This is made up of “agency employees, salary employees and management” Rowley stated. By the end of 2020, Ford will have 18 manufacturing facilities in Europe, as opposed to 24 at the start of this year. The leaner structure and strategy rethink mean Rowley expects profitabiity for the second half of this year to “significantly improve” over the £315m loss posted in Europe last year. The long-term goal is to achieve a margin of 6% on earnings before taxes and interest.  Rowley also claimed Ford is “on track to meet its obligations” with European Union emissions targets, which will see carmakers face huge fines if they can’t lower their fleet CO2 average by 25%  before the end of 2020. It will achieve this by launching 16 electrified models, including eight due to be launched by the end of this

First Drive: 2020 Bentley Continental GT V8

ST. HELENA, Calif. One hundred years ago, W.O. Bentley created a company with a simple objective: To build a fast car, a good car, the best in its class. After initial growing pains, it found its raison dtre in its pursuit of luxury and performance, the latter exemplified by its five victories at the 24 Hours of Le Mans between 1924 and 1930.And though producing little more than rebadged Rolls-Royce cars during the decades it was owned by the bespoke manufacturer, the 21 years that Bentley has been under the stewardship of Volkswagen AG has seen the British company construct some of the worlds most sought-after, sumptuously fitted, overpowered grand touring machines emphasis on grand. The 2020 Bentley Continental GT, in coupe and convertible variants, is more of the same. The third-generation iteration of the companys most successful product 70,000 sold since it made its initial debut in 2003 was all-new last year, at least in hardtop form and powered by Bentleys signature 6.0-litre W12 engine. Its droptop sibling now joins it, and both have a new addition in the powerplant department a twin-turbo 4.0-litre V8 mated with a new eight-speed double-clutch transmission. (Just to keep the record straight, the convertible will be available later this year with the W12.)And lest anyone thinks 542 horsepower and 568 pound-feet is somehow deficient, at least when compared with the 12-cylinders thundering 626 horsepower, allow me to purge that notion. The V8 hardtop GT will move its 2,165-kilogram mass from rest to 100 km/h in just four seconds; the convertible is but a tenth slower despite another 170 kilograms of road-hugging weight. This is a mere three-tenths of a second slower than the W12 models. (When experienced for the first time, its like discovering Pavarotti could run the 100 metres in 10 flat. Something this big shouldnt be that fast.) In addition to a seemingly endless supply of power across a broad range, the V8 blat and burble though the stylish quad exhaust pipes plasters a guilty grin on ones face. Some might argue that Bentleys are about prestige and overt luxury and they would be right. But Bentley has also been walking the walk with the Continental GT for a half-dozen years, campaigning the car in a number of race series throughout the world. Its even going after the production-car Pikes Peak hillclimb record currently held by a Porsche 911 Turbo S on June 30, albeit with the W12 engine.More to the point, the GT is equally adept at diving into a decreasing radius turn at a decent clip, holding the correct line and blasting off to tackle the next. Our drive route started in St. Helena, headed through the Napa and Sonoma valleys and then up and over the mountains to hook up with the Pacific Coast Highway on the other side. From there, it was a long run south on the 101, through congested San Francisco and finally zipping along at a brisk clip the highways 65-mph speed limit is clearly a mere suggestion for most California motorists ending up in Palo Alto. For the first half of the route, the roads, blessedly free of vacationing RVs and other mobile chicanes, had more twists to them than a politicians promise. Though initially thinking the cars steering a little light for the job at hand, I revised my belief after about the 200th corner.Impressive is the fact ride quality was not compromised one iota, even with the GTs drive mode set on Sport. Both the coupe and convertible are equipped with front and rear lightweight anti-roll bars for extraordinary handling, while the optional Dynamic Ride System controls ride comfort and lateral roll, cushioning passengers from excessive movement. The air suspension uses three-chamber air springs, further improving ride comfort. It has the scope to vary from sporting spring stiffness to limo-like refinement, depending on which mode is selected. Standard active all-wheel drive varies the front-to-rear torque split dependent on the driving situation, though the setup is tuned to use rear-wheel drive as much as possible during normal driving.Although there was plenty of time spent hooning the GT V8s in very atypical fashion, there was occasion enough to cruise through the small farming and tourist towns dotting the route, top down in the convertible, soaking up the rays and reveling at the cars finer touches, of which there were many. The convertibles tailored roof can be deployed or stowed in just 19 seconds at the touch of a single button, with the car travelling at speeds of up to 50 km/h. A newly designed neck warmer both warmer and quieter than in the previous GT Convertible is integrated into the heated and vented seats (with massage function), optimizing airflow around the electrically adjustable headrests. Combined with a heated steering wheel and new heated armrests, al-fresco motoring can be extended into the colder months.Bentleys, from the Bentayga to the Mulsanne, are known for their opulent handcrafted interiors,
