News Roundup: Tesla Cybertruck and Ford Mustang Mach-E vie for biggest EV reveal of the year

Welcome to our weekly roundup of the biggest breaking stories on Driving.ca from this past week. Get caught up and ready to get on with the weekend, because it’s hard keeping pace in a digital traffic jam. Here’s what you missed while you were away:Tesla reveals Cybertruck, breaks two windows in the processThe Cybertruck is here and it’s getting ALL the media attention. Price starts US$39,900, there are three range options (250 miles+, 300+ and 500+), and it’ll supposedly sprint to 96 km/h in just 2.9 seconds. But that’s not what people are talking about. Why? Because, well, just look at it! The polarizing design of the Cybertruck was actually eclipsed when a member of the reveal team, in an attempt to demonstrate the shatterproof-ness of the windows, accidentally shattered the two left-side windows with an iron ball. “Room for improvement,” said Elon. The Mach-E stole the LA Auto Show before the show had even started Ford Mustang Mach-E Nadine Filion In other major EV news this week, Ford pulled the sheets off its Mustang Mach-E SUV. David Booth rounded up the most important facts about the controversial “Mustang.” Did you know that it was originally supposed to be called just “Mach-e”? True story. But when designers wanted to spring on a new battery-powered platform, those with their fingers on the purse strings said they’d release the funds only if the Mustang label was involved. Find out what other secrets the new E-SUV holds right here. The Internet’s best reactions to the Mach-E arrival Ford Mustang Mach-E Nadine Filion As it is wont to do, the Internet voiced some strong opinions about the Ford Mach-E. One of the most controversial parts is right there in the name—and according to Driving.ca’s own poll, a full 72 per cent of readers believe that, now having seen it, the Mach-E is not worthy of the Mustang name. The public wasn’t the only source of concern over the name, either: Ford admitted at the launch that plenty of former Mustang designers refused to work on the project. One Twitter user got in on the joke by Photoshopping an image of the Carrol Shelby standing next to a black-and-white Mach-E. Ha! Not likely…The RAV4 Prime arrives with a whopping 302 horsepowerThe 2021 Toyota RAV4 Prime plug-in hybrid has arrived with the winning combo of more power and better fuel economy. The first plug-in-hybrid version of the popular Yota SUV will get 60 km of pure electric motoring per charge of its 17.8-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery, and enough power combined with the 2.5-litre Atkinson-cycle four to push it to 96 km/h in 5.8 seconds. Based on the 62,000 RAV4 units Toyota expects to sell to Canadians this year, the electrified 2021 RAV4 should absolutely crush sales when it’s released in the summer of 2020. ALG report names best car brands for resale valueWe’ve all heard the maxim about new cars losing a bunch of their value the moment they’re driven off the dealership lot, but it’s also true that the exact amount of money lost varies depending on the brand of car. The annual ALG Residual Awards is designed to recognize those carmakers whose products tend to guard their value better than the competition. At the top of the mainstream list is Honda, which stole the title from Subaru, which had held it the last four years. Land Rover took top mention for premium brands, followed by Audi, Porsche and Mercedes-Benz. Find out if/where your vehicle landed on the

A ‘smashing’ success? All the best reactions to Tesla’s provocative Cybertruck

It was a strange and yet somehow familiar scene.Awkward Elon standing in front of his followers, random bros shouting out during the pauses, a child’s geometry project on wheels in the spotlight. And then the windows broke—The unveiling of the Tesla Cybertruck might have been the oddest Tesla reveal event yet. Fitting, perhaps, because it’s definitely the brand’s oddest-looking vehicle. The best/worst moment in the evening happened when lead designer Franz von Holzhausen, warm from just having sledgehammered the doors to show off their strength, lobbed a metal ball at the driver-side window. Unlike the door, which didn’t bear so much as a scratch, the window broke. Oh my fing god, laughed Elon. Then Franz busted the back window the same way. (You can watch that awesome lowlight at the 31:38 mark in the full reveal video.)But even with the window demo fail and the fact the brand managed to over-deliver on its range and price promises, it was the truck’s mold-shattering appearance that garnered the best reactions. By the time the Tesla team had vacuumed the bits of broken glass out of the seats, Twitter had already curated its own hilarious list of things people were comparing the truck to. Elon unveiling the Tesla Cybertruck. pic.twitter.com/TxNGYDyGzP Adam Selby (@adamselby) November 22, 2019I’m telling my kids this was the Tesla cybertruck #teslatruck #tesla #Cybertruck pic.twitter.com/492Fd97rYM Joseph Bue (@joseph_bue1) November 22, 2019#teslatruckTruck designer:So, how do you want your truck?Elon Musk: pic.twitter.com/azWwq9RSCQ NIDHAL SELMI نضال السالمي (@imleslahdin) November 22, 2019The most popular and obvious reference by far comes courtesy of The Simpsons.  #Cybertruck pic.twitter.com/ctLhVgk0rL Warren Christmas (@Ben_Lombardo_) November 22, 2019It wasn’t all laughs and gasps, though. Wall Street’s response to the truck and the event that launched it was a little more sombre. Tesla’s stock dipped six per cent immediately following the event, with analysts pointing to the truck’s “really weird” look. In the brand’s defence, Tesla teased the Cybertruck’s avant-garde form plenty beforehand, with references to Blade Runner and an image of 007’s “Wet Nellie” Lotus Esprit S1. Now, with the E-pickup in plain sight, the public is comparing it to other vehicles from the past. The new #Tesla #Cybertruck looks like the 1970s Dome Zero, with these old Saturn doors that didnt dent. pic.twitter.com/cxJ1t0BFXo Kevin Cleroux (@Kevin8se7en) November 22, 2019my take is I think it looks great, like a fat Gandini wedge, but Im worried for pedestrians and that it is enormous and maybe deeply anti-social? #TeslaPickupTruck pic.twitter.com/1ji7HgMVnc Matt Bubbers (@mattbubbers) November 22, 2019Think it’s a coincidence that #DeLorean was also trending last night? This is what happens when the #DeLorean from Back To The Future, has a baby with the Tumbler from Batman Begins. pic.twitter.com/5LB7r9Fh2y Shaun Stackhouse (@ShaunStackhouse) November 22, 2019Ultimately, Tesla designed this thing to be different, so don’t expect the commentary and memes to stop here. Tesla #Cybertruck design briefing:ELON:I want you to make an electric truck!DESIGNER:Yes boss. First Drive: 2020 BMW X6

2020 BMW X6 M50i Spartanburg, S.C. Its been about 10 years since BMW launched the X6 upon an unsuspecting world. What was this SUV with a fastback roofline? Like a fashion model in hip waders, BMWs automotive dichotomy was a head-scratcher. Turns out, they were on to something BMW has moved over 443,000 X6s since then, while also creating a new bandwagon on which Audi, Mercedes-Benz, and Porsche has jumped.Arriving in showrooms soon is the third-generation 2020 X6 adopting the chassis architecture, interior decor, and engine lineup of the recently redone X5. The X6 will initially come in two versions the xDrive40i with a 335-horsepower, 3.0L turbocharged straight six-cylinder engine, and the M50i that storms the gates with a twin-turbo 4.4L V8 making 523 horsepower and 553 lb.-ft. of torque between 1,800 and 4,600 rpm. Thats a healthy increase of 78 horsepower and 74 lb.-ft. of torque over the previous X6. Im snaking an X6 M50i finished in Manhattan Green Metallic over some rural roads in South Carolina, and the biggest takeaway here is this potent, high-riding extrovert goes down the road like a BMW or more specifically, what we think BMWs should drive like. For such a brute, the X6 is surprisingly alert, changing direction with nary a hint of body slop. The steering is quick and direct, showing a natural heft that has been absent from Bimmers of late. Standard kit for the X6 M50i includes 22-inch alloy wheels, Adaptive M Suspension, and a bunch of M Sport bits including brakes, exhaust, and a limited-slip differential, as well as an xDrive all-wheel-drive system that primarily operates in sporty rear-drive mode until conditions dictate otherwise. Adding to this testers on-road acumen is the optional Active Roll Stabilization and air suspension that, among other things, will lower the ride height by 40 millimetres. And, oh yes, the engine. This 4.4L bent-eight with its turbos nestled within the vee is a peach. Urge is linear and relentless all the way to the redline, and in Sport mode, the X6 makes all the required noises a deep rumble punctuated by barks and the occasional fart. Not unlike my Golden Retriever, but considerably more pleasant. Granted, some of this aural sex is pumped in digitally through the audio system, but all you have to do is open a window to know its happening outside, too. The metal shift paddles call up quick and obedient cog swaps from the excellent ZF eight-speed automatic transmission. This thing is quick; the X6 M50is zero-to-96 km/h blast of a mere 4.1 seconds matches the outgoing X6 M. Not enough? Wait for the 600+ horsepower X6 M. Tis a strange world we live in.This third-gen X6 arguably looks more comfortable in its new skin. While the outgoing model came across as slightly awkward and trying a bit to hard, the lines of this 2020 flow cohesively, bookended by a larger (but not cartoonish) front grill take a bow, X7 and 7 Series and a ducktail rump with slim horizontal LED taillights finish off the rear end. Compared with the outgoing model, the new X6 is slightly longer, wider and lower. Its wheelbase, stretched by 42 millimetres, allows for a bit more rear seat legroom, and BMW says cargo space has increased, too. Blue brake calipers are standard on the M50i, and BMW is premiering its all-new, optional illuminated grill on the X6. Just when you thought youd seen it all.Step inside and we see BMWs latest interior aesthetic, dominated by a free-standing 12.3-inch central touchscreen and a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster behind the steering wheel that pushes the speedo and tach to the outer edges, leaving the centre of the screen open for navigation information and the like.Standard are a panoramic sunroof, sport seats trimmed in Vernasca leather, and GPS navigation. Ah, but unlike most other premium automakers who are eschewing tactile functionality for digital poke n hope real estate, BMW retains its tried-and-true iDrive rotary controller along with a plethora of logically placed physical buttons that help keep our eyes on the road, where they belong. There is also a row of numbered presets that can be assigned to your favourite radio stations, navigation home, and the like. Bravo. The multi-adjustable seats in this tester showed BMWs typical blend of supreme comfort and support, and the cool ambient lighting elevates the X6s cabin to high art at night. While no pricing has been announced, we can be quite sure the significantly superior 2020 BMW X6 M50i will cost more than its $90,850 predecessor. Also know that numerous requisite packages and options will swell the bottom line considerably; this is no surprise, but what does surprise is the breadth of capability baked into BMWs latest take on this niche model. The X6 M50is coddling opulence, blistering pace, forward technology, and for those who still care fine dynamics, make driving this weird wedge of extravagance a

Lexus unveils its first all-electric vehicle — but Canada won’t get it

Well, we lose out again. After many years of selling hybrids, Lexus has finally gone all-electric with the upcoming UX 300e. The compact crossover is the brands first to run exclusively on battery power. But rather than unveiling it at the Los Angeles Auto Show, where we saw the Mustang Mach-E, Chevrolet EV pickup, and Tesla Cybertruck break cover, Lexus chose a show in Guangzhou, China.Thats because the UX 300e is only planned for China, Europe and Japan. Lexus Canada confirmed it won’t be sold in North America. (Lexus sells hybrids in Canada, as does Toyota, but neither has had an all-electric vehicle up until now.)And we cant figure how a nimble little luxury sport-ute, perfectly sized for the city and with no tailpipe out the back, wouldnt be a slam-dunk on our shores. Instead, Lexus Electrified, the companys global electrification strategy, will start with the UX 300e overseas next year. But that said, a closer look reveals a model that isn’t about performance. Lexus even says it will have natural-yet-brisk acceleration character, which doesnt exactly translate into pushes you into the back seat. Its 54.3-kWh battery puts it below other premium brands: Audis e-tron is 95 kWh and Mercedes-Benzs ECQ is 85 kWh. Even the Chevrolet Bolt and Nissan Leaf Plus have bigger batteries. The UX 300e makes 221 lb.-ft. of torque below the Leaf Plus 250 lb.-ft., or the 266 laid down by the Bolt. Audi and Mercedes-Benz scream by it at 413 and 560 lb.-ft. respectively. When its time to top up, the UX 300e has a fast-charge capacity of just 50 kW, while the e-tron rates as high as 150 kW.All of that might be understandable if the UX 300e went forever on a charge, but that doesnt seem to be the case either. Lexus claims 400 kilometres but thats on NEDC (New European Driving Cycle), an outdated method that can be more than 25 per cent more generous than how electric vehicles are rated here.Doing the math and assuming the UX 300e nets 300 km in Canadas tests, were still looking at 363 km for the Leaf Plus, and more than 400 for the Bolt. For the higher performers here, the e-trons estimated at 328 km, and the EQC at 360 km.Of course, we have to account for the largest factor in all of this North Americans. Specifically, our neighbours to the south, who usually eschew pint-sized in favour of portly when it comes to vehicles, and who buy enough automobiles to dictate our market. The UX 300e is probably the right size and the right power for its target markets overseas. Were guessing the next Lexus Electrified will probably be an RX, with a bigger battery and more power for

Aston Martin creates ultra-exclusive DBS Superleggera Concorde Edition

Aston Martin’s Q bespoke division has created an ultra-exclusive DBS Superleggera special edition to celebrate 50 years since Concorde first took to the skies.  Made in association with British Airways, the DBS Superleggera Concorde Edition features a number of visual enhancements inside and out and is limited to just 10 examples, all sold through Aston Martin Bristol – down the road from where British Concorde manufacturing took place.  External alterations include a painted livery using British Airways colours on the roof strake, spoiler and rear diffuser. A black carbonfibre roof sports the silhouette of the supersonic jet. There are neat details, too, including new side strakes milled from solid aluminium, the British Airways ‘Speedmarque’ logo in chrome on the front wings, a black ‘Q by Aston Martin’ wing badge and even the authentic aircraft identifier number of the flagship of the Concorde fleet (G-BOAC) on the body behind the doors. Inspection plates are signed by Aston CEO Andy Palmer and British Airways chairman Alex Cruz. New interior features include the Concorde logo on the front seat facings, ‘Mach Meter’ graphics in the driver’s sun visor and an Alcantara headliner with a ‘sonic boom’ graphic. There are also titanium paddle shifters – made from Concorde’s compressor blades, the firm claims – special floor mats and unique sill plaques.  Underneath, the DBS Superleggera’s mechanical make-up is unchanged. It makes use of the 5.2-litre twin-turbo V12 putting out 715bhp and taking the supercar to 211mph.  No price is quoted for the DBS Superleggera Concorde Edition, so prospective customers should contact Aston Martin Bristol. Some of the proceeds from each car will be donated to the Air League Trust, a non-profit organisation that supports underprivileged children and teaches them how to

BMW’s all-electric i4 confirmed to get 600 kilometres on a charge

Battery has been the buzzword this week, from the unveiling of Tesla’s strangely-styled Cybertruck to GM announcing an on-sale date of its all-electric pickup to Ford’s reveal of its Mustang Mach-E.And now BMW has given us the goods on its upcoming i4, which will have a range of around 600 kilometres on a charge.Itll use the fifth generation of the companys eDrive electric technology, which will first show up in the BMW iX3 in 2020, and then in the iNEXT and i4 that are planned to go on sale in 2021.The i4 will be a four-door Gran Coup, the company said, and will be the first all-electric model in the premium mid-range segment. By 2023, BMW plans to have 25 models globally with some sort of electrification, ranging from pure battery to plug-in hybrids. In the i4, the eDrives electric motor will deliver around 530 horsepower, which BMW said is equivalent to its conventional gasoline V8; while its newly-designed, high-voltage battery is very flat and very energy-dense, weighing about 550 kilograms and with an energy content of around 80 kWh. Zero to 100 km/h is expected to take about four seconds, with a top speed of more than 200 km/h.Charging capacity will be up to 150 kW, and on an appropriate fast charger, the i4 can recharge its battery to 80 per cent in 35 minutes and get 100 kilometres of range in just six minutes. The i4 will be built in Munich and go on sale in all global markets and since Canada is one of them, were looking forward to getting behind the

2020 Mercedes S-Class seen testing with less disguise

Mercedes-Benz will move its S-Class flagship saloon to a new generation next year, and prototypes are beginning to drop disguise in new shots.  Latest images show more of the BMW 7 Series rival’s overall profile, and we can see that the brand isn’t ditching the curvy surfacing of the outgoing model. It will have, however, a redesigned front end with lights inspired by the latest-generation CLS.  A spy photographer previously managed to point their lens inside of a prototype, revealing Mercedes has totally redesigned the cabin around a large, portrait-oriented central touchscreen. The Tesla-style display is significantly larger than any screen Mercedes has offered in previous models, and detail shots show the bottom half of it is dedicated to the limo’s climate control functions, with touch-capacitive shortcut buttons below. It’s likely further updates to the brand’s already new MBUX user interface will boost features and usability, while the brand’s trademark digital dials are also visible.  The seventh-generation S-Class looks set to regain its place at the forefront of the brand’s technical knowhow, with a range of new electrified powertrains and advanced driver assist features. Comfort and technology levels will take a boost with the target of lifting it beyond rivals such as the Audi A8 and BMW 7 Series. The new Mercedes flagship, which is due in UK showrooms next year, has been developed to support two distinctly different saloon models for the first time. While standard versions are set to receive a range of plug-in hybrid drivetrains, the German car maker also plans to introduce an aerodynamically optimised pure-electric version that insiders say will serve as the flagship model for its new EQ electric vehicle sub-brand.  Badged EQ S, the new model will offer a claimed range in excess of 310 miles on the latest WLTP test cycle when it goes on sale in 2022. Plug-in hybrid versions of the S-Class will feature part-time zero-emission capability for distances of up to 62 miles, together with the option of a newly developed 4Matic four-wheel-drive system with fully variable apportioning of drive between the front and rear axles.   The EQ S forms part of Mercedes’ £9 billion programme to introduce more than 10 dedicated electric vehicles to the UK market within the next six years.  In a further change, it is believed that Mercedes-Benz has decided to do away with its long tradition of offering the standard S-Class, which goes under the internal codename W223, with two different wheelbases. Nothing is official at this stage, but it is understood that the growth of the E-Class to a length of 4920mm is behind a decision to produce the new S-Class exclusively in long-wheelbase guise, with the car measuring around 5280mm in length.  However, while the standard S-Class sits on the MRA platform, the more technically advanced four-wheel drive EQ S will be the first Mercedes-Benz model to be based on the new modular electric architecture (MEA) platform. Unlike the structures being developed to underpin smaller EQ models, it is not based on an existing platform but has been developed as dedicated EV architecture with a flat floor to house batteries. The drivelines set to power hybrid versions of the new S-Class are based around Mercedes’ latest 3.0-litre and 2.9-litre in-line six-cylinder petrol and diesel engines and the AMG-developed 4.0-litre V8, all of which operate in combination with a disc-shaped electric motor housed within the automatic gearbox and a lithium ion battery located in the boot floor.  The pure-electric EQ S is set to receive two electric motors – one acting on the front axle and the other driving the rear – providing permanent four-wheel drive in all variants. In the upcoming EQ C, this set-up delivers more than 400bhp and some 516lb ft, although engineers involved on the development of the EQ S suggest it will offer even greater levels of power and torque, with a planned AMG performance model earmarked to produce more than 600bhp.   Despite the differing platforms, both the standard S-Class and the EQ S are set to share the same active suspension system. A development of the existing S-Class’s AirMatic+ system, it works in combination with a 48V electrical architecture and a stereo camera that scans the road ahead to adjust the spring and damper action on each wheel, allowing it to not only counteract body lean in corners but also to better control pitch.  Stylistically, the new S-Class is claimed to break new ground with a lineage that Mercedes-Benz design studio sources say will influence a whole new generation of models. Recent prototype spy shots preview a design that will feature distinctive tri-band LED multibeam headlights, a new interpretation of the classic Mercedes-Benz grille and door handles that retract back into the bodywork to help improve aerodynamic properties.  It is understood that the EQ S will adopt its own distinct styling. Tesla unveils otherworldly Cybertruck, starting at US$39,900

The Tesla Cybertruck has arrived and it is, as promised, very, uh, different than the other pickups currently on the market. The brand’s mildly enigmatic CEO Elon Musk introduced the highly enigmatic battery-powered truck at an event in Los Angeles on Thursday evening streamed live online. He was accompanied on-stage by a merry band of softcore Mad-Max-types dressed all in black, on hand to demonstrate (rather ineffectively at times) the truck’s toughness. The biggest news is the sheer audacity of this thing’s design, which, in fairness, Tesla did warn us about, in the form of nods to Blade Runner and a certain underwater James Bond car and straight disclaimers it would alienate many.  Still, it — it looks like a six-year-old’s interpretation of a future truck. We honestly thought it was a joke when it first drove on stage. Also: pedestrian safety regulations are still a thing, right? The Cybertruck measures in at smaller than a Ford F-150; comes standard with adaptive air suspension; and allegedly starts at US$39,900 before any EV rebates. It will be available in three range options, measured here in miles: 250+, 300+ or 500+. The electric engine will ship the new-age pickup from zero to 60 mph (96 km/h) in a blistering 2.9 seconds in top trim, and provide enough torque to tow 14,000 lbs. This was showcased in a video of the Cybertruck literally running away with an F-150 in a tug-of-war. “You want a truck that’s really tough, not fake tough?” quipped Musk. A sledgehammer-wielding assistant showcased the toughness of the truck’s stainless steel alloy (the same material used on Tesla’s Starship rocket) by whacking away at a regular truck door, followed by the Cybertruck’s. They also shot the vehicles with a 9mm pistol. You can guess the results. But when it came time to demonstrate the durability of the transparent metal glass, the thrown object that was meant to bounce off the passenger window ended up shattering it. And the rear door window, too. Musk soldiered on through the reveal with the two shattered windows. In related truck news, GM vied for its piece of the electric pickup truck buzz on Tesla’s big day by revealing its e-truck release-date just hours before Elon went live. GM’s electric pickup will be on sale sometime in late 2021, roughly the same time Tesla estimates its truck will make its first deliveries. However, you can make a US$100 deposit on Tesla’s Cybertruck right now at Tesla.com.LISTEN: What do car dealers think about electric vehicles? Are they keen to have them in their showrooms? New Mercedes-Benz GLA previewed ahead of December unveil

The new Mercedes-Benz GLA has been previewed in silhouette form, as the company confirms it will be officially unveiled on 11 December. Design details revealed by the latest image are scarce, but we can see how the crossover’s rear styling will be heavily influenced by the A-Class hatchback on which it is based, while the headlights are clearly modelled after those on the new GLB SUV.  Although it sits lower to the ground than its predecessor, Mercedes has now confirmed that the GLA’s roofline is more than 10 centimetres higher off the ground, allowing for enhanced headroom and a more upright seating position in line with larger SUV models. Legroom is said to have been improved as well, despite the model being 1.5cm shorter overall than the outgoing car.  Earlier this year, our spy photographers captured images of the new GLA in testing, with the interior of the compact crossover seen for the first time. The interior image shows that the dashboard is also set to be very similar to that of the A-Class and Mercedes’ other new compact models, featuring rounded air vents and the twin touchscreens of the MBUX system. The new GLA will join Mercedes’ MFA platform-based range alongside the A-Class hatchback, A-Class saloon, CLA four-door coupé, CLA Shooting Brake estate and B-Class MPV. It also now sits below the GLB, the largest car on that platform and a new, fully fledged rival to the BMW X1 and Audi Q3. That leaves the GLA to compete with smaller compact crossovers such as the Audi Q2 and Ford Focus Active and is why it likely has a lower, more car-like profile. Minimal technical details of the GLA have been released yet, but we know it will be closely linked to the A-Class in terms of interior design and technology, engines and gearboxes. That means it will adopt Mercedes’ latest touchpad and voice-controlled MBUX infotainment system, alongside more advanced safety features and increased material quality. The engine range will kick off with a 1.3-litre turbocharged petrol unit developed in conjunction with the Renault-Nissan Alliance. This will likely be available in two states of tune, while a 2.0-litre engine will top out the range for the time being. A 1.5-litre diesel will also be offered.  Later on in the GLA’s lifespan, we will see a return of the AMG-tuned GLA 45, putting out anything up to 416bhp through a performance-focused four-wheel drive system. Before that arrives, there will be a 302bhp 35 variant, as is now available on the A-Class.  The GLA will be produced alongside the A-Class at Mercedes’ factory in Rastatt, Germany. The A-Class will also serve as the basis of the EQA, an electric hatchback that’s scheduled to arrive next

Reader Review: 2019 Ford Ranger Lariat Supercrew

Bob Corrigan with the 2019 Ford Ranger in Calgary.Al Charest / Postmedia Small trucks such as the original Ford Ranger, last sold in North America in 2011, are a distant memory as pickups continue to morph into oversize haulers. As such, the small and useful light-duty truck segment has languished. With a 2019 model-year truck, however, Ford has returned the Ranger nameplate to Canada and the U.S. Like its full-size brethren, the Ranger has grown in size.According to Bob Corrigan, thats not a bad thing. Corrigan recently drove a SuperCrew 2019 Ranger Lariat 44. Regarding the Rangers growth, he says buyers are simply looking for more room in a vehicle. I spent a lot of time driving smaller trucks in my younger days when I was delivering newspapers to paper boys, the Calgarian says. They were useful vehicles for the size.Corrigan also owned a 2007 Ford Ranger, one of the last generations of the truck that first launched in 1983 as a replacement vehicle for the Mazda-built Ford Courier. Originally sold with a. 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine and four-speed standard transmission, the Ranger could also be had with a V6 powerplant. The truck quickly gained a faithful following and became a best-selling compact pickup for Ford.I bought my 2007 Ranger as a utility vehicle, but I only kept it for a year and a half before it transitioned into being my sons truck, Corrigan says. He drove it to university and used it as a work truck for his painting business. We just sold it this spring.According to a Ford media release, the automaker chose to return the Ranger name on a midsize truck because theres a new generation of midsize truck buyers seek(ing) more manoeuvrable, fuel-efficient pickups.Although absent since 2011 in Canada and the U.S., a Ford Ranger truck has been available in other global markets for years. Ford based their new North American version on the global platform but says theyve developed the Ranger specifically for our market. For example, while the North American Ranger does have its similarities to the global product, including styling cues and a high-strength steel backbone frame, the new truck is equipped with steel, frame-mounted front and rear bumpers the global Ranger lacks these.Power comes from a 2.3-litre EcoBoost four-cylinder engine and power is transmitted through a 10-speed automatic transmission. An available FX4 four-wheel drive package adds off-road tuned suspension components, all-terrain tires and frame-mounted steel bash plates and Dana Trac-Lok differentials. The truck can be had in two-wheel and four-wheel drive in SuperCab and SuperCrew cab configuration. Trims include the base XL, next level XLT and well-equipped Lariat. Pulling up to the 19 Ranger, equipped with the $3,000 Lariat package and a host of options including the FX4 off-road package for a total of $51,859 before taxes, Corrigans first thought was of the overall size. Its significantly bigger than the old Ranger, he says, and adds, But, given that, I think it will be a truck for people who have occasional use for such a vehicle without being in the full-size truck market. His tester was painted in Fords Hot Red Pepper metallic.Red might be the name, but its more of an orange and I think its a very attractive colour, Corrigan says. Overall, the Ranger has solid, clean looking lines, almost like a scaled-down F-150.Corrigan says its a step up to get into the cab, but one thats not awkward. Once in the leather-covered drivers seat, he adds that it took him little time to become comfortable and familiarize himself with the controls.Although I owned that older Ranger, Ive never been much of a Ford guy, Corrigan admits.
