GM’s electric pickup gets a fall 2021 on-sale date

2019 Chevrolet SilveradoDerek McNaughton / Driving GM CEO Mary Barra told investors at an event in New York on Thursday her companys first electric pickup will debut in showrooms in late 2021, and it will have a leg up on the competition. General Motors understands truck buyers, she said.Barra made the announcement hours before Tesla CEO Elon Musk was set to reveal that companys new Cybertruck. But other GM executives are confident Teslas pickup wont be in the same league as their electric truck.I suspect price-wise there might be some similarities, but I think in terms of size and capabilities, there might be a difference, Phil Brook, the vice president of marketing for GMs GMC brand, said in an interview. People who buy our trucks, they are very proud of the fact that theyll take their trucks anywhere, theyll get them dirty, then theyll wash them out and go to a five-star restaurant for dinner. So theyre not people who just drive them around and want to look good.Musk told a Tesla enthusiast podcast earlier this year he wants his truck, which is also aiming for a late 2021 market launch, to start at less than $50,000. During an October earnings call, he declared it will be the companys best product ever. But Tesla probably wont have the electric-truck market to itself for long, if at all. Amazon-backed Rivian Automotive plans to launch its R1T pickup late next year. Ford has vowed to start selling hybrid-electric and battery-electric versions of the F-150 starting in 2020, and GM has committed to producing plug-in pickups at a plant it had been planning to shutter in the Detroit area.Perhaps more importantly, Japanese automakers have spent two decades and billions of dollars trying to get in on the big pickup gravy train; 20 years after Toyota first started making the Tundra, they are still getting crushed by the Detroit Three, which control almost 92 per cent of the U.S. half-ton truck segment, according to IHS Markit.Customers who own Ram pickups are more loyal than owners of any other model line in the U.S., the researcher says, and brand loyalty to Ford or General Motors Chevrolet isnt far behind.Check Out Our Latest Auto Show CoverageTeslas Thursday night event bookends the press days for the Los Angeles Auto Show, where Ford generated buzz with the debut of the Mustang Mach-E electric SUV. But seeking attention of his own wasnt the only motivation for Musk to stage his truck reveal now and near the show. When announcing the date and locale, he joked on Twitter they were strangely familiar and shared a link to the opening credits and scene of the 1982 film Blade Runner, which was set in November 2019. He had referenced the movie before as inspiration for the pickups futuristic design.Musk is scheduled to begin making remarks around 8 p.m. local time at Teslas design center in Hawthorne,

Nissan recalls newer cars, SUVs over braking defect that could pose fire risk

2019 Nissan Murano PlatinumBrian Harper Nissan is recalling close to 400,000 cars and SUVs in the U.S. over a brake system issue that could also lead to a fire, reports Reuters.About 394,025 vehicles are covered by the recall, specifically Nissan Murano SUVs from model years 2015 to 2018; Maxima sedans from 2016 to 2018; and Pathfinder and Infiniti QX60 utilities from 2017 to 2019.In affected vehicles, the braking system may leak brake fluid; if it drips onto a nearby internal circuit board, in rare instances that could cause a short circuit and maybe a fire, the automaker said early November.Drivers will see a warning message on the vehicles dashboard before such an electrical short occurs, but the hazard remains if that warning is ignored. Owners of affected vehicles will be contacted by Nissan early December; the company is already working on a

‘Ford v Ferrari’ depicts a generation of car guys best left behind

A still from Ford v. Ferrari (2019)Twentieth Century Fox Ford v Ferrari, which opened Friday, November 15 starring Christian Bale and Matt Damon, follows British racing driver Ken Miles (Bale), and hot-rodder Carroll Shelby (Damon) as they build a special race car to help the Ford Motor Company beat Ferrari at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1966 and 1967.The goal was to break Enzo Ferraris stronghold on international racing that had his Scuderia Ferrari winning everything throughout the 1960s.They strike an odd-couple pair: Miles is a wiry, eccentric Brit; Shelby is a square-jawed, cowboy-hat-wearing Texan. Neither much like the corporate pressure exerted by Ford chief Lee Iacocca and his marketing goons, who themselves were humiliated by Ferraris Old World gravitas after a bungled buyout attempt. And there you have the necessary tension for a movie. Its a beautifully shot film that will be enjoyable for modern car buyers and enthusiasts alike engines rev, tires squeal, stopwatches click. But what I saw is a devastating picture of the lack of diversity that permeated the industry in the 1960s.If automakers want any hope of relevance in the next decades, as they face the most radical changes and challenges theyve experienced in 150-odd years of automotive history, they would be wise to contemplate it closely. Because Ford v Ferrari shows a generation best left dead and gone. Matt Damon and Christian Bale on the set of Twentieth Century Fox’s ‘Ford v Ferrari’ Twentieth Century Fox It’s a Man’s WorldPicture this: During all 152 minutes of the film which, for those who love vintage racing cars, will feel as good as an ice cream sundae on a summer afternoon men dominate the screen for 98 per cent of the time, by my unofficial count. They are in the executive suites at Ford and Ferrari, in the workshops and garages in Venice, on the track out at Willow Springs Raceway. (And when I say men, I mean white, straight men.)No fraction of the storyline is devoted to parsing the thoughts and feelings of any female who appears, even peripherally, on screen. Instead, Caitriona Balfe, who plays Miless wife, Mollie, is presented as the doting mother: She smiles mildly and nods her head indulgently as her husband struggles to gain traction in the race world. She clucks and scolds like a schoolmarm when Miles and Shelby come to blows on her front lawn then brings them each a soda pop. Other women waft through the film like smoke: Secretaries in wood-paneled offices handing manila folders to men in navy suits; corporate wives smiling silently, always positioned one step behind their husbands shoulder; young racing fans that serve as pretty dcor on racing podiums. To the victor go the spoils. The critique I heard most often about Once Upon a Time in Hollywood could easily apply here: This is a film celebrating those nostalgic golden days when white men ruled. Its pretty to watch if you can suspend thinking for two hours about what that world must have been like for any ambitious or creative folks who didnt fit that demographic.Behind the Shiny ExteriorThe central message of Ford v Ferrari that the answer to the question Who are you? is what really matters in life is delivered in the beginning, middle and end of the film by Shelby. The biggest problem with that is Carroll Shelby. The man who was responsible for turning the Ford Mustang into the epitome of American muscle occupies a god-like status in car culture and embodied everything the red-blooded American male of the era was supposed to hold supreme. Some of it is admirable: A former chicken farmer from Texas who pulled himself up by his own proverbial bootstraps, Shelby wore overalls when he raced and built his own cars with Ford-tough V8 engines. He beat the Europeans at their own game at Le Mans. In his later years, he established a charity that helped provide organ transplants for children. Most of it was not: Shelby was a notorious womanizer who blew through six marriages and was heading toward divorce from his seventh when he died. He spoke to everyone with language so blue it was legendary; ask any car journalist or professional driver who knew him, and theyve got plenty of descriptive words to describe the way he treated anyone within earshot. Many of those words are unprintable here.During all 152 minutes of the film, men dominate the screen for 98 per cent of the timeFor fun, he shot lions, elephants and rhinoceroses on animal hunts in Africa. He filed so many lawsuits against Ford, against local car builders, against online forums and, ironically, against the company that later would supply all of the Cobras for the film that he become more known and reported on for that in his later years than for any feats of automotive genius. In fact, after his blast of success with the AC Cobras in the 1960s and his hot-rod take on the Ford Mustang, Shelby didnt have a single real hit. Instead, there were claims he falsely represented many of the cars he

LA Auto Show Hits and Misses

Here in LA-LA land, the Auto Show is and has mostly been all about going green. The exception was the celebration of 50 years of Hemi muscle power and the fossil fuel needed to run a quarter mile. At least that was a genuine celebration and not the lip service paid to a pressing need that many manufacturers spouted — leaving bluer skies for future generations. As Driving does at every auto show, we pick the best and worst on the floor. Here are the team’s picks for the shiners and horrors!Check out all of our latest auto show coverage hereDavid Booth was ready to pick Karma’s new SC2 concept. With 1,100 horsepower and a shape that’s sensual enough to make Ferrari jealous, it seemed like a certainty. Then Toyota announced the 2021 RAV4 Prime plug-in hybrid. It has 302 horsepower and scoots to 96 km/h in just 5.8 seconds. Fuel economy and performance are wrapped up in an old-faithful of a package. As Herr Motor Mouth opined, “a Gold star for the boys from Toyota.”Andrew McCredie was of the same mind. “Not only does this all-new plug-in hybrid have a full electric range of just over 60 kilometres, it will be the second-fastest Toyota in the automaker’s lineup when it shows up in Canadian showrooms next summer.” The acceleration and horsepower at play that’s fired through a good all-wheel-drive system leaves but one question. “When can I drive one?” My pick as highlight was going to be the Audi RS Q8. How can you not love a high-riding crossover that can run with the RS 6? Sadly, it was not at the show, so I picked the E-tron Sportback. It takes the frumpy and puts some swagger in the e-tron’s all-electric step. It is not going to set a sales record, but the funky headlights complete with the 1.2-million pixel chips that allow five logos to be flashed on the road along with the cool outer façade and the improved aerodynamics sure worked for me.Our resident video guru, Clayton Seams, picked the Ford Mustang Mach-E as the pick of the show. It is “a solid car, with the right variations to cater to a broad owner base.” With two 75.7-kWh models, the EV will be offered in rear-drive and all-wheel-drive. It is a ride many will aspire to for all the right reasons.Curiously, it was also the miss of the show for Seams. “It is just not a Mustang no matter how hard they try to convince people the styling cues like the rear taillights stay true to the original.” Key is the fact that it is more crossover than sports car and the Fu Manchu moustache (the black trim that drapes around the grille) or, as another opined, a very poorly drawn horseshoe. The consensus was it needs to be rebadged something other than a ’Stang! Ford Mustang Mach-E Nadine Filion David Booth’s miss was the Hyundai Vision T concept. “Not because it was ugly (it isn’t) or that Hyundai won’t sell a boatload of them when it comes to market (and it will), but because its press release had not a single iota of technical detail regarding its electrification. All we learned is that it glows blue when it’s recharging and that its styling is “sensually sporty,” but as to the kilowatt-hours of battery, the net horsepower of gas/electric combination or the fuel economy advantage that combo might engender, there was not a peep. Consumers are eager for practical plug-in SUVs. “They want hard, factual information, not a bunch of fluff that wouldn’t pass muster at an art house tea party.”My sentiments echo David’s — Hyundai Vision T plug-in hybrid concept presser was 20 minutes of my life I will never get back. It was full of blah, blah, blah about how the styling is going to set the world on fire, along with promises of transcendental meditation for the inner soul, or some such guff. Not a peep about how the second coming will save the planet with its plug-in technology. Charging port glows blue. La-di-da. Handout / Hyundai Andrew McCredie picked Bollinger as his miss. This Detroit-based all-electric truck builder has been bringing its dog-and-pony show in the form of its retro-inspired SUV and four-door pickup to auto shows for what feels like a decade. “They’re taking orders and speaking with unbridled enthusiasm about the capabilities of their all-electrics, but mysteriously they keep pushing back their delivery dates. A couple of years ago they promised production models by late 2019.” Here we are at the end of 2019 and now the company is saying early 2021. “Call me skeptical, but I can help but think this company is taking a page from the ‘promise-them-the-world-and-get-bought-up-by-a-big-company’ playbook.” Hey, it worked for EV-pickup-rival Rivian and the half-billion investment it got from Ford, so maybe there’s still hope for Bollinger. Don’t bet on it.So, there you have it, some very cool hits at the 2019 LA Auto Show, but sadly the clangers won the day. LISTEN: What do car dealers think about electric vehicles? Are they keen to have them in their showrooms? We talk to Vancouver GM dealer Blair Upton about this and much more during this week’s

The mayor of Montreal rode in a steam-powered car 120 years ago today

Today marks a special day in history: 120 years ago, on November 21, 1899, Raymond Prfontaine became the first mayor of Montreal to ride in an automobile. And its likely there wasnt much of Montreals infamous road construction to dodge, because there wasnt really much in the way of roads back then, anyway. Most were dirt, dusty in summer and muddy in winter. He was driven around by Ucal-Henri Dandurand (pictured above in his French-made De Dion-Bouton, sometime between 1903 and 1912), who took him out in a steam-powered Waltham automobile hed bought and had shipped up from Massachusetts.Dandurand claimed his Waltham was the first car in Montreal, although historians say there were at least three automobiles in the city prior to that. But Dandurand, a real estate developer, loved to make headlines, and he took Prfontaine on their historic ride the day the car was delivered.Quebec was actually a hotbed of auto activity in the early days, dating right back to Canadas founding year of 1867. Thats when Henry Seth Taylor, a watchmaker in Stanstead, built a steam-powered carriage that most consider to be Canadas first car.Taylor crashed it at an event he never bothered to put brakes on it and stashed it in a barn. It was found a century later and restored, and is now owned by Ingenium (the former Canadian Science and Technology Museum) in Ottawa.A Quebecer also built what’s thought to be the first gasoline-powered car in Canada. Working in Sherbrooke, George Foote Foss completed his car in the spring of 1897.He only built one Fossmobile, as he called it, but in 1902 he moved to Montreal and started distributing the Crestmobile, built in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Some people think Dandurand made his historic journey with the mayor in a Crestmobile, but thats not so. The Crestmobile was still under development at the time and given George Foote Foss ties to the American car, and its similarity to his Fossmobile, many believe he had a hand in its design. Its not clear if Dandurand bought the Fossmobile, but he was photographed with it. And in Montreal he was also famous for an enormous recreational vehicle he commissioned, which looked like a Pullman railway car and could sleep eleven people. It cracked the floor when it was displayed at the 1913 Montreal Auto Show, and reportedly never left the city because none of the bridges could hold its

Lexus UX 300e revealed as firm’s first production EV

Lexus has revealed its first electric production car, the UX 300e, at the Guangzhou motor show in China, with the compact SUV due to go on sale in the UK in 2021. The electric version of the regular UX crossover, understood to be based on the electric Toyota C-HR offered in China, features a front-mounted motor that produces 201bhp and 221lb ft. Power comes from a 54.3kWh under-floor battery offering a claimed range of around 250 miles and fast charging at speeds of up to 50kW. The styling of the regular UX has been largely maintained, including the brand’s distinctive large front grille. It does gain new aerodynamic-influenced wheels, with the charging port located on the rear pillar where the fuel filler usually is. The UX 300e features a number of drive modes so that the performance of the electric motor can be better managed, along with paddle shifters to control the regenerative braking modes. Lexus says the UX 300e, built on Toyota’s GA-C platform, has been developed with a focus on on-road performance, and the goal of offering a quiet and refined driving experience. To balance the new powertrain, extra bracing has been added with the dampers reworked to maintain optimum weight distribution.  According to Lexus, the UX 300e’s powertrain draws on learnings from the firm’s long-running hybrid system, and features a temperature management system that balances power at low and high temperatures. There has also been a focus on refinement, Lexus claiming it has added insulation to reduce wind and road noise, with an Active Sound Control system that “transmits natural, ambient sounds to communicate the driving conditions”. The UX 300e is due to go on sale in China next year, with UK sales following in 2021. Pricing has yet to be finalised. Lexus and parent firm Toyota will launch three EVs by the end of

Tesla Cybertruck revealed

Tesla Cybertruck revealed The Cybertruck has a range of more than 500 miles on a charge Tesla has launched the Cybertruck – a pure-electric pick-up with sportswear performance and a range of more than 500 miles on a charge. Set to rival Rivian’s R1T, the Cybertruck has been in the pipeline for a while, and takes a significantly different design direction to the current Model S, X, and 3, as well as the forthcoming Model Y and Roadster. The Cybertruck will come in three variants initially. There will be a single motor, rear-wheel drive version, a dual-motor all-wheel drive model, and a tri-motor all-wheel drive option. A 0-60mph time of 2.9 seconds is quoted. Seating for up to six adults is available in the cab, and the Cybertruck will tow more than six tonnes. Along with the large bed load space, there is the usual front load area found in Tesla models, and some other EVs. Charging is possible across the Tesla Supercharger network, including the soon to be rolled out V3 ultra-rapid set-up. Although UK specifications have not been announced, it is expected that the Cybertruck will be launched with a CCS inlet. Ranges are quoted on the US EPA test cycle, which tends to be tougher than the WLTP-derived figures used in the UK and Europe. As such, range figures may increase slightly when specifications are revealed for the EU market. The single-motor model has a range of 250+ miles and 0-60mph time of less than 6.5 seconds. As the entry level model, it’s towing capacity is a little less than 3.5 tonnes. The dual-motor model sees that capacity increase to 4.5 tonnes, and a range quoted of more than 300 miles on a charge. The acceleration time drops to a sub-4.5 second 0-60mph time. Top of the range tri-motor model has the 500+ mile quoted above, plus the headline sprint time and towing figures. Full self-driving technology is being sold as a pack, though this will depend on what regulations have come into force in each market once the Cybertruck arrives. The design has been influenced at least in part by the 1970’s Lotus Esprit. Fully-refundable deposits of £100 are being taken now, with configurations able to be fixed as production starts late in 2021. Tri-motor models are expected to enter production a year later. No pricing information is available for any market, and all above figures are quoted to US specifications. The main reason for the Cybertruck is that the US market is dominated by large pick-up models. The Tesla will be challenged by both the Rivian, and a pure-electric version of Ford’s best-selling F150. The former will come to the UK, though there has been no announcement yet as to whether the Ford will arrive – currently the largest pick-up Ford sells in the UK is the smaller Ranger. Pricing in the US will start at just under $40,000. By comparison, the Model 3 also starts at less than $40,000, and in the UK sees the figure of £39,490 translate 1:1 from the US dollar cost. Whether that would remain the same for the Cybertruck is complicated slightly by the fact that pick-ups are classed as commercial vehicles in the UK, and subject to different tax and government grants – but expect similar prices for the entry level model when launched. By extension, we can expect the dual-motor Cybertruck to cost from around £47,000.

Jaguar F-Type 2020 facelift seen again ahead of imminent reveal

Jaguar is getting ready to reveal an updated F-Type, and the latest spyshots give us our best look yet at the redesigned sports car ahead of an anticipated reveal in the coming weeks.  The photographs, taken near Jaguar Land Rover’s Gaydon technical HQ, show a number of prototypes are shedding camouflage as testing ramps up. We can now see the restyled front end more clearly, with a new clamshell bonnet, slim, angular LED headlights mounted lower down the nose and a more prominent grille.  A look at the rear shows it retains the same vertical bootlid, but with new wraparound tail-lights and a reshaped bumper. A quick glimpse at the cabin doesn’t reveal much, but it looks like the infotainment has moved on a generation, while the rotary dial climate display remains.  It’s expected that much of the more advanced technology and infotainment features from the I-Pace and the 2019 XE will make its way into the F-Type. That means new digital dials, a larger and more feature-laden touchscreen, and substantial upgrades to the materials.  Jaguar Land Rover is now phasing out its long-running supercharged V6 in favour of a new turbocharged and hybridised straight six, and the F-Type will benefit from this more efficient powertrain. The turbocharged four-cylinder and supercharged V8 engines should be carried over to the new car with limited changes, however. Indeed, this prototype registers as a 5.0-litre V8, putting paid to rumours JLR would bring in a BMW-sourced 4.4-litre unit. What remains unclear is whether the new F-Type will retain a manual gearbox option. The current V6 is still offered with one in the UK, although it has reportedly been removed from sale in the US. Regardless, manuals account for a tiny fraction of overall F-Type

First Look: 2021 Kia Seltos

What is it?It resembles the Kia Soul and it addresses one of the iconic little-car-that-could’s key weaknesses — the new Seltos (horrible name, in our opinion) arrives with an available all-wheel-drive system with torque vectoring control and a lock mode to handle severe road conditions. In terms of size it slots neatly between the Soul and larger Sportage, although Kia describes it as having “Herculean interior” space. The hype is a bit over the top, but sitting in the back did prove it had ample space for a pair of six-footers in terms of both head- and legroom. The cabin is well conceived and comes with the latest mod-cons, including a seven-inch OLED screen for the instrumentation and a 10.25-inch high-resolution screen for the infotainment system in the top model.    Check out all of our latest auto show coverage hereWhy does it matter?People are crazy for crossovers right now, so another affordable one can’t hurt Kia’s push up the sales charts. It will have broad appeal with two engine choices. The base  2.0L four-cylinder produces 146 hp and 132 lb.-ft. of torque and works with Kia’s Intelligent Variable Transmission. That’s a CVT to most. The second choice is a 1.6L Turbo with a more rewarding 175 hp and 195 lb.-ft. of torque. It drives all four wheels paired through a seven-speed twin-clutch.When will Canada get it?The 2021 Kia Seltos is slated to hit Canadian roads in the latter half of 2020.Should you buy it?For far too long, the Soul has been left in the wilds because it was not offered with all-wheel-drive. The Seltos adds the missing ingredient, along with an attractive exterior look, lots of interior space and the latest in connectivity.
