Volkswagen has previewed a new addition to its ID electric vehicle family ahead of its public debut at the Los Angeles motor show. The ID. Space Vizzion is an estate-style variant of the Vizzion electric luxury saloon that was revealed in early 2018. It’s confirmed for production late next year. The Space Vizzion is described as “a wagon of tomorrow that combine the aerodynamic characteristics of a Gran Turismo with the spaciousness of an SUV”. It makes use of an extended version of Volkswagen’s MEB electric platform, with VW promising the concept will be capable of up to 367 miles on a single charge under the WLTP testing regime. VW claims a “completely digitised cockpit” alongside the use of sustainable materials such as ‘AppleSkin’, an artificial leather made partially from residual matter from apple juice production. VW has confirmed that different variants of the production model will be offered in North America, Europe and China, although it’s not clear yet how different these region-specific cars will be. The unveiling will take place at LA’s Petersen Automotive Museum on 19 November, with attendees invited to examine the ‘accessible and unlocked’ concept in detail, suggesting that it will feature a fully finished interior. Volkswagen will display four other MEB-based concept vehicles at the event, likely the Crozz and Roomzz SUV concepts, Buzz Cargo van and ID Buggy off-roader. The firm unwrapped its first production-ready electric car, the ID 3 hatchback, at last month’s Frankfurt motor show. That model will soon be joined by a production version of the ID 4 electric SUV, which we recently saw undergoing pre-production testing in heavy

Alfa Romeo axes 4C sports car to focus on SUVs
Alfa Romeo has officially withdrawn its 4C sports car from sale just one week after it was revealed that the new GTV coupé and an 8C successor have been removed from the future product plan. An Alfa Romeo spokesperson was unavailable for comment, but the Porsche 718 Boxster rival now no longer appears on Alfa’s configurator and was absent from a list of current and future models shown at the firm’s third-quarter earnings report last week. The 4C has consistently struggled to secure a strong foothold in the unpredictable sports car market, selling just 421 units in Europe last year. That compares with 9943 Audi TTs and 8202 Porsche 718s sold in the same period. Last week, Alfa Romeo boss Mike Manley told the company’s stakeholders that its future product portfolio has been “significantly scaled back, with a corresponding reduction in capital spending”. The removal of the 4C will make way for two new SUVs and refreshed versions of the Giulia saloon and Stelvio. The smaller of the two new SUVs, the Tonale, has been designed as a means of entering the competitive and highly profitable compact SUV market. It will take its power from a hybrid system shared with its Jeep Renegade platform partner and be priced to compete with the Audi Q3 and BMW X1. There has been no suggestion that a new partnership between Alfa’s parent company FCA and French automotive giant PSA could foster further sports car development, making it unlikely that a replacement for the 4C will appear any time soon. The new alliance is the fourth-largest car-making group in the world, but new CEO Carlos Tavares is known for bringing in drastic cost-cutting measures to improve

Car Review: 2019 Porsche Panamera GTS Sport Turismo
2019 Porsche Panamera GTS Sport TurismoJil McIntosh OVERVIEW Porsche adds another model for four-door fun PROSGood looks, excellent driver, comfortable interior CONSNo sporty steering feel, too-fiddly controls, everything’s an option VALUE FOR MONEYIf you’ve got it, it’s a great place to spend it WHAT TO CHANGE?Bring back the function buttons HOW TO SPEC IT?Get the chassis control; beyond that, the sky’s the limit In late June, I went to the racetrack to watch the Queens Plate, and arrived in a 2019 Porsche Panamera GTS Sport Turismo. Clad in fancy clothes and a wide-brimmed, fancy hat because I am nothing but traditional for the big horse races I chose valet, rather than trudge across an acre of dirt-and-gravel parking lot. Most of the crowd left all at once, and it was a madhouse to get ones car back. When my bright Mamba Green car slowly made its way in, several young men crowded around it. When I announced ownership because after all that, I sure as hell wasnt going to admit it was merely borrowed I got three requests for a ride, and one marriage proposal. And why not? This things a head-turner indeed, even if the eye-searing exterior shade didnt always reach a consensus with onlookers. Its four-door configuration was also contentious with some, who felt that any Porsche beyond a Cayenne or Macan should not have more than two points of entry, but I disagree. The Panamera is a great way to get you and three of your friends to your destination, but it also has the chops to satisfy as a sports machine when its just you and the curves in the road. The GTS is the latest addition to the Panamera lineup, which morphed into its second generation for 2017. Its available as the Panamera as weve come to know it, or the more wagon-like Panamera Sport Turismo, as I drove it. At a starting price of $153,300, my tester slots between the 4S Sport Turismo ($125,600) and Turbo Sport Turismo ($177,300). But this being Porsche, where it seems everything except the windshield is an option, my car was outfitted to $182,840 before freight and taxes. That included such items as $5,710 for dynamic chassis control, $2,300 for eight-way power rear seats, $6,120 for an Assistance Package that added such features as blind-spot monitoring and adaptive cruise control, $1,970 for a customizable head-up display a first-time option for Panamera and $400 to paint the door handles black. All that is icing on a car that masterfully blends sports performance with the smooth, coddling personality of a luxury machine. Power comes from a 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 that spins out 453 horsepower and 457 lb.-ft. of torque. Its mated to an eight-speed PDK Porsche Doppelkupplungsgetriebe, the companys name for its dual-clutch automatic thats beautifully quick and smooth, but unfortunately operated with an awful push-pull-and-a-button-for-Park electronic shifter that too many automakers seem to prefer for how techy it looks, rather than using a more intuitive setup. The all-wheel system automatically shifts as much as 70 per cent of torque to the front wheels as needed, and drive modes can be selected via a handy steering wheel-mounted dial. An air suspension is standard equipment, while my car was optioned with rear steering and that dynamic chassis control gadget, counteracting body roll and keeping the car level on uneven surfaces. The handling is whip-sharp, and the Panamera tucks around corners like its glued to the pavement, but what really impresses is how it blends that ability with rock-solid comfort. Even in Sport-Plus, the suspension is firm but never a kidney-knocker. Its a relatively heavy vehicle, but it simply goes out and carves the corners without breaking a sweat, every hair in place and with nary a wrinkle in its tuxedo. For some enthusiasts it may be too smooth, since the steering feel is rather muted, but I find its in keeping with its more practical, luxury-four-seater demeanour. The Panamera is a lovely vehicle inside as well, with the quality of materials and fit-and-finish youd expect for the price. Its also a big car, with lots of room for front- and rear-seat occupants. That said, Im less than impressed with Porsches decision to drop the last-generation Panameras rows of buttons in favour of a glass touchscreen surrounding the shifter. You must look down to be sure youre hitting the right spot, for everything from your heated-and-cooled seats to the rear window defroster, and if the suns shining on the glass, its not easy to see the icons. Simple is good in any car, but I think its especially important in something thats primarily about going fast and snarly.Infotainment functions are accessed through a large central touchscreen; most are simple, but there are times when you have to go too deep to find items. Adjusting the direction of the centre vent, for example, requires you to pull up a computer screen. The instrument cluster is also configurable, and one

Citroen C5 Aircross PHEV launched
Citroen C5 Aircross PHEV launched A range of 31 miles should be possible on electric power alone Citroen has revealed details of its C5 Aircross Hybrid – a new PHEV due from the French firm with a range of 31 miles on a charge. Using a 13.2 kWh battery and 80 kW motor, the plug-in Citroen combines the electric components with a 180hp petrol engine for a combined output of 225hp. Power goes through an eight-speed EAT automatic transmission. Citroen is making use of the ‘ë’ that should be included in its name as an indicator of electrified systems. As such, the ë-Comfort system has been launched – prioritising a comfortable ride with the added refinement that electric drive brings. Drive modes include electric-only, hybrid, and electric-save, and there are the usual brake energy recuperation systems fitted to help top up the charge en route. Efficiency figures come in at 39 g/km CO2 and a combined WLTP fuel economy of 166 MPG. Charging will take less than two hours on a fast charger at home or in public, with a 7.4 kW on-board charger fitted as standard. Charging is carried out via a Type 2 inlet. Citroen is making use of the shared platform and powertrain technology of the PSA Group. The C5 Aircross Hybrid joins similarly sized group stablemates in the shape of the Peugeot 3008 Hybrid and Hybrid4, and Vauxhall Grandland X Hybrid4. Other PHEV models from the group include the Peugeot 508 Fastback and SW, and the DS 7 Crossback E-Tense. The group is in the middle of an electric model offensive, as pure-electric versions are due from the Peugeot e-208, Vauxhall Corsa-e, Peugeot e-2008, and DS 3 Crossback E-Tense – plus pure-electric vans from the group’s brands. Pricing for the Citroen C5 Aircross Hybrid starts at £35,340, with deliveries due in the middle of 2020. Registration of interest are open now.

Tesla Autopilot users rate feature’s safety high, even after close calls, crashes
2018 Tesla Model 3 Peter Bleakney photo The vast majority of Tesla Model 3 owners consider the cars Autopilot feature a real safety benefit, despite the fact the systems sometimes put them in danger. The overwhelming consensus about Autopilot is that it made owners feel safer while driving, according to a survey of Model 3 owners conducted by Bloomberg. Of the 5,000 owners polled, over 90 per cent touted the safety benefits of the system. The survey also found 13 per cent of owners say the Autopilot mode has put them into a dangerous situation before.Perhaps most interestingly, the overlap between Model 3 owners who answered those two questions that way was pretty big most of the drivers who reported being put in a dangerous situation by the system also said it made them feel safer. Were not sure what is going through those peoples minds, exactly. One owner surveyed, for example, admitted their car didnt slow down enough to take a bend in the road and ended up hitting a truck; they rated Autopilots overall safety four stars out of five. To be fair to to the capability of Teslas software, some 28 per cent of owners also say Autopilot has saved them from a dangerous situation. It would be interesting to see what other drivers think of Teslas Autopilot when they are driving down the same stretch of road as a Model 3. Do they feel more nervous that the Tesla might be driving itself? Or do they feel safer knowing that there is a second set of eyes on the road? For more on electric vehicles, listen to Drivings EV podcast Plugged In. Seat to launch electric scooter as urban mobility vehicle
Seat will launch a new electric Scooter later this month, as part of the Spanish firm’s attempts to become a leader in ‘urban mobility solutions’ to tackle congestion in large cities. The eScooter, which is being developed in collaboration with Barcelona-based motorcycle maker Silence, will join the upcoming Minimo and the eXS Kickscooter in the company’s new urban transport line-up. While Seat has not given performance details, it says the eScooter features a 100% electric powertrain equivalent to a 125cc petrol bike. It will be presented at the Smart City Expo World Congress in Barcelona later this month. In recent years, an increasing number of car companies have started targeting solutions for crowded cities. Earlier this year, Seat announced that it would spearhead efforts in the segment within the Volkswagen Group. Last year the brand piloted a fleet of prototype car sharing vehicles, modelled on its upcoming Seat eMii, which users could rent through a mobile app, and a forerunner to its eScooter, the Segway-based eXS. In 2021, Seat will introduce a new small electric city car. The Minimo develops the concept of the Renault Twizy and fronts the firm’s increasing emphasis on small and environmentally-friendly transport alternatives. Seat boss Luca de Meo said that “the constant growth of large cities makes achieving efficient mobility one of the main challenges to

Texas tuners build the Ranger Raptor that Ford won’t sell here
Its an open secret that your author has been pushing Ford to bring a version of the mighty Ranger Raptor to these shores. With GM taking a big slice of the mid-size off-road pie with the Colorado ZR2 and ZR2 Bison, the Blue Oval must surely know its leaving money on the table. Thats without mentioning the Tacoma TRD Pro and its ilk.Where the Glass House has fallen down, a Texas-based tuner has picked it up. PaxPower, a speed house out of Houston, has unveiled a 350-hp Ranger with plenty of off-road goodies at this years SEMA show in Las Vegas. A common cop-out Fords offered as to why the Ranger Raptor isnt in North American showrooms is the presence of a weak-sauce 2.0-litre diesel engine making just 210 horsepower. While it is true this mill would not satisfy customers in this region, PaxPower has proven a Raptor-like Ranger can be built around this markets 2.3L EcoBoost engine, thank you very much. Tuned to about 350 horsepower, this clever girl will surely outrun most of the other creatures in the jungle.Starting with a current-model Ranger FX4, PaxPower adds OEM Raptor body panels to the fenders, bedsides and most obviously the front fascia. Those bumpers are custom-fabricated, though, and offer approach and departure angles better than any stock Ranger could ever dream. Toyo R/T rubber sets a just-right stance.None of this show would be of any use without a bit of off-road go, so the company installed a prerunner long-travel suspension setup from BajaKits to pair with King 2.5 front coilovers and rear shocks. Specific front and rear suspension travel isnt mentioned but it surely matches or beats the overseas Ranger Raptor measures of 32-per-cent and 18-per-cent increases over a standard Ranger.Like it? Me, too. Since the crew at Ford seem paralyzed on this issue, one can head over to PaxPower to spend their

Limited-edition BMW M2 CS sends generation out with a bang
The current-generation BMW 2 Series is due soon for replacement, so the German automaker is sending it out with a bang in the form of the M2 CS.The M2 CS is powered by the same turbocharged S55 straight-six as usual, pumping out 444 horsepower and 406 lb.-ft. of torque, sent to the rear wheels only via either a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic; or six-speed manual transmission. The automatic drops the zero-to-96-km/h time by 0.2 seconds, but buying that will tell BMW you dont care about manual transmissions, so please just skip it for the stick and deal with a 4.0-second to-96-km/h time.An Active M differential and Adaptive M suspension is now available for the M2 and features three modes: Comfort, Sport and Sport+. M Carbon Ceramic Brakes are also optional, and a dual-branch exhaust system with electronically-controlled exhaust valves comes standard. To make the car lighter, carbon-fibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP) elements have been added all around. The front splitter, roof, rear spoiler, M twin-stalk exterior mirrors, rear diffuser and hood have all been replaced with CFRP versions. Even the centre console is CFRP and now weighs 2.7 kilograms less than the previous part. With the introduction of the Mini-based BMW 2 Series sedan (or “Gran Coupe,” ugh) it seemed like the last bastion of rear-wheel-drive performance at BMW was coming to an end. Not to worry, though, BMW has said its sports cars and performance variants will remain rear-wheel-drive to meet consumer demands, and when the next generation is revealed, it will be available in RWD or AWD.Only 2,200 M2 CS models will be built, and we wont know pricing and availability for Canada until closer to the cars launch date here in April
