SUV Review: 2019 Jeep Renegade Limited 4’4

2019 Jeep Renegade Limited 4x4Jil McIntosh OVERVIEW Jeep’s smallest ute gets a makeover PROSOff-road ability, comfortable seats, better-looking than before CONSLaggy passing power, not a lot of storage space, still kinda odd-looking VALUE FOR MONEYLimited has lots of features but doesnt quite look the price WHAT TO CHANGE?Fewer transmission gears might not be a bad idea HOW TO SPEC IT?I’d go all the off-road way with the Trailhawk Wow, is that the new one? That looks really sharp! Thats usually something I hear about an eye-catching sports car, but this interested onlooker was, instead, taking in my Jeep Renegade tester.Jeeps smallest sport-ute gets a makeover for 2019, including a tiny new turbocharged engine and a bit of a facelift. It still isnt a handsome beast, but it doesnt look as goofy-nerdy as it did before especially since its lost the white X marks in its taillights, which always reminded me of pedestrian crosswalk signs. (Or a Phillips-head screwdriver. –Ed.) The Renegade comes in five trim levels, starting with the Sport at $28,645, and rising to my top-line Limited tester at $35,045 (which ended up at $39,765 after several options were piled on). The mid-level North and Altitude can be ordered in front- or all-wheel drive, while the Sport, Limited, and the ultra-off-roader Trailhawk drive all four tires. The new engine is a 1.3-litre turbocharged four-cylinder that makes 177 horsepower and 200 lb.-ft. of torque, mated to a nine-speed automatic. Its standard equipment in the Trailhawk and Limited. In the other trim levels, its an option over a 2.4-litre four-cylinder that produces 180 horsepower and 175 lb.-ft. of torque. Despite its higher torque rating, the 1.3L can get wheezy when its asked for power. Its not helped by the transmission, which seems to be a combination of too many gears for its own good, along with its habit of reaching for the top gears as often as possible in the name of fuel efficiency. Its fine when youre cruising along city streets, but theres annoying lag when you really want to pass at highway speeds, for instance. The Renegade is agile, responding quickly and accurately to steering input. The steering weight is confident at higher speeds, but its easy to spin it around tight parking lots. I wish the mirrors were wider, though theyre square when they should be rectangular; as such, they dont reveal as much to the sides as Id like, even when theyre adjusted all the way out. The short wheelbase and relatively narrow track give it a bouncy ride that isnt impossible to live with, but its there. Chalk it up to one of those Jeep things you either understand, or you dont. The all-wheel system features a rear axle that automatically disconnects when the rear wheels dont need to be powered, for extra fuel savings. When rear traction is needed, it seamlessly and immediately reconnects. A dial lets you select settings for snow, sand, or mud, as well as to lock the axles at low speeds for the extra sticky stuff. The Trailhawk is the true rough-stuff rebel of the bunch its surprising just how off-road capable it is, thanks to a Rock setting and 20:1 low-range crawl ratio exclusive to its system but the Limited will still get you through most tougher-than-average conditions. The Renegades interior styling is plain but functional, which is fine in the lower trims, but the expanses of hard plastic looked a bit out of whack with my testers nearly $40,000 price tag. Still, everythings put together very well, and there are some neat styling cues, including a passenger-side handle integrated with the air vent, a handsome steering wheel, and stereo speakers embossed with the signature Jeep grille. This is a small vehicle, and the interior reflects that. The front seats are roomy enough for all but the tallest folks, and I really like the seating position and seats that stayed comfortable on a five-hour drive, but those in the rear seats will notice a lack of knee room if the front seats arent slid considerably forward. The cargo compartment is equally narrow, with a maximum of 524 litres of space when the rear seats are up, although an adjustable cargo floor panel gives you some storage flexibility. All Renegade trim levels include air conditioning, push-button start, heated mirrors, and Bluetooth audio streaming, but you have to go one step from the Sport to the North to get dual-zone automatic climate control, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and automatic headlamps. At my Limited tester, the goodies include a customizable instrument cluster, 40/20/40 split-folding rear seat with a pass-through (the others are 60/40), a 115-volt power outlet, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, heated seats and steering wheel, rain-sensing wipers, and a 12-way power-adjustable drivers seat.Just about everything is simple and easy to use, including climate control functions operated with big buttons and a dial. The heated chairs and wheel are

Tesla pick-up to be revealed on 21 November, Musk says

Tesla will unveil its long-awaited electric pick-up truck, dubbed Cybertruck, later this month, CEO Elon Musk has confirmed. Musk took to Twitter earlier today to post: “Cybertruck unveil on Nov 21 in LA near SpaceX Rocket factory”.  He has linked the date to the original Blade Runner film, which lists the same date in the opening credits. The date also coincides with the Los Angeles motor show, which is likely to be intentional.  Little is known about the pick-up beyond what Musk has alluded to in interviews and on Twitter. He’s claimed before that it will be similar in size to the class-leading Ford F-150, cost less than $50,000 (£38,900) and be more capable than any rival.  Design-wise, everything seen so far has been purely speculative. Last month, Musk tweeted: “(The Cybertruck) doesn’t look like anything I’ve seen bouncing around the internet. It’s closer to an armoured personnel carrier from the future.” Pick-ups are still the biggest-selling vehicles in North America, so the move makes financial sense. Ford sold more than 900,000 F-Series trucks in 2018, making it the best-selling vehicle in the US. Ford plans to launch an electric version of the F-150 before 2022. Tesla’s expansion plans beyond the pick-up also include the Model Y crossover, which will be delivered to customers in the coming months, the new Roadster and the electric Semi

Toyota teases hot GR Yaris Prototype with rally heritage

The image shows the rear of the machine, with styling that’s familiar from the existing Yaris, but with the addition of far wider rear wheel arches to fit the car’s likely high performance brief. In a further nod to the car’s likely performance intent it sports the camouflage livery used by most recent hot Toyota models of recent years, including the recently revived Supra. At the launch of the revamped Yaris recently, Toyota’s executive vice-president, Matt Harrison, told Autocar that a performance version of the model would likely be launched to strengthen the link between Toyota’s road cars and its Gazoo Racing motorsport arm. Toyota has applied various levels of branding under the Gazoo Racing theme in order to develop a model structure for its high-performance models. These include the hardcore limited-run GRMN versions that are positioned above models that carry the GR badge, which represents an ‘authentic sports model’. The firm also offers a GR Sport trim level that offers a more aggressive look while retaining an unchanged mechanical package. Toyota secured the 2018 World Rally Championship manufacturers’ title with the Yaris WRC, with Ott Tanak claiming this year’s driver’s

Bentley’s all-new Flying Spur is the lavish commuter car for the one-percent

MONTE CARLO I am not a potentate. Neither am I a captain of industry, oil tycoon, shipping magnate, oligarch or Hollywood megastar. Yet, on arrival to Nices Cte dAzur airport, where I was then chauffeured in Bentleys new Flying Spur to the Htel de Paris in Monte Carlo, I felt like the biggest of big shots. Ensconced in sumptuous luxury in the back seat of the bespoke British manufacturers grand touring sports sedan for the 40-minute drive where the super-wealthy come to frolic, gamble, and stash their millions, I feigned a look of utter indifference, the better to set myself apart from the commoners. This was probably the most stress-free introduction to the worlds most advanced luxury GT sports sedan Bentleys claim, not mine one can hope for, using the rear-seats removable touchscreen to set the massage function to pulse, close the sunroofs blind, pick a soothing shade of mood lighting and check our progress into Monaco on the navigation map. Drive? Not just now, thank you.Yet, Bentley has designed, engineered, and handcrafted the third-generation 2020 Flying Spur to be driven quickly and with no compromise to hedonistic levels of luxury. Our customers may have a fleet of motor cars in their garage, notes Peter Guest, Bentleys product line director for the car. But the default choice, when they can only drive one car, is a Bentley, because you have everything you require and more in the new Flying Spur. It is the ultimate expression of the internal combustion age.Whew! Talk about setting a high bar, one that could be knocked down if one were feeling jaded or allergic to huge doses of hyperbole. Yet, its hard not to admire the effort put into this full-size, four-door sedan, even one with a starting price tag of $236,100, for which perfection would be expected, at least by those of more modest means. The Bentley rides on the same MSB platform as the Continental GT and the Porsche Panamera, and at 5,405 millimetres in length, it boasts a wheelbase 130 millimetres longer than the previous Flying Spur.If not drop-dead stunning visually, the Flying Spur at least demands your attention even here in Monte Carlo, where Rolls-Royces, Lamborghinis, McLarens, and Ferraris command prime parking spots at the casino and outside the chi-chi hotels. Theres a strong, broad-shouldered, masculine look to the cars aluminum body, offset with a myriad of details, such as its imposing grille, the LED matrix headlights with unique cut-crystal-effect detailing, and the pice de rsistance, the Flying B ornament that rises majestically from beneath the Bentley nose badge. The one downside of the redesign is the thick windshield pillars that can obstruct the view when cornering, which made picking ones way through the congested streets of Monte Carlo thick with scooters and tourists an exercise in extreme caution.Like the Bentayga and Continental GT, the Flying Spur is initially available with a 6.0-litre, twin-turbocharged W12, mated to a dual-clutch eight-speed transmission. This enhanced engine delivers 635 horsepower and 664 pound-feet of torque, more than enough to move the robust four-door to ridiculous speeds zero to 100 km/h in 3.8 seconds and a top speed of 333 km/h.If not the worlds fastest four-door sedan, the Flying Spur is in rarefied company. Maximum velocity is reached in sixth gear, with overdrive seventh and eighth used for economic grand touring. Bentley says its committed to offering electrified powertrains in all its model lines by 2023, so the 12-cylinder will not be the only engine powering the Flying Spur. Now, hooning about in something as dignified as a Bentley is rather dclass. Fortunately, even part throttle moves the car along at a clip that makes passing slow-moving 18-wheelers a breeze and smooth. The 12-cylinder is whisper quiet, the upshifts and downshifts all but imperceptible. The meandering tarmac of La Route Napolean allowed at least a portion of the Flying Spurs new all-wheel-drive system to be given a workout. Unlike the previous-generation version, which employed a permanent AWD system with a fixed 60/40 power split, the 2020 model has a clutched system that delivers two-wheel drive to the rear axle. Depending on the road conditions and wheel slip, it will then automatically send drive to the front axle as required, up to 354 lb.-ft. of torque in Comfort mode. In Sport, the system limits the available torque to the front axle to 207 lb.-ft., maintaining a higher torque level at the rear for a more traditional feel. Turn-in response is thus improved with the front end feeling much lighter, in turn making directional changes easier with greatly reduced understeer. Also assisting in the big sedans road-hugging prowess is a new electronic all-wheel steering system. Coupled with the active all-wheel drive and Bentley Dynamic Ride, delivering excellent handling and ride. New three-chamber air springs allow a greater range of suspension adjustment between limo-style comfort and

5 Electric Vehicles for under $45K

Clockwise from top left: Chevrolet Bolt, Nissan Leaf, Hyundai Kona and Kia Niro.Handouts Its only been the last couple of years that putting together a list of five electric vehicles for under $45,000 was possible, and given the coming wave of new, affordable EVs on the horizon, a top-10 list will be do-able in the next two years or so.For now though, these five zero emission vehicles will have to do. But it should be noted that that price threshold of $45k is far from arbitrary, as that figure is the ceiling of a base priced model to qualify for a federal government rebate of $5,000 (and no, its not a coincidence the base prices of these five EVs are mere dollars, or in the case of the Tesla and Hyundai one loonie, below that threshold). B.C. and Quebec residents can further whittle down the MSRP with provincial incentives of $3,000 and $8,000 respectively. The Doug Ford government in July of last year canceled Ontarios EV rebate program. So, in no specific order, five EVs that the average family can afford.Tesla Model 3By far the best-selling EV in Canada so far in 2019 by June some 7,585 had been delivered to Canadians, compared to the second place Nissan Leaf (1,476) the Model 3 is a formidable contender and worthy of its top-selling crown. With a full-charge range between 350 and 500 kilometres (depending on the battery pack), over-the-air software upgrades and Teslas distinctive, yet spartan, exterior and interior design language, the technically advanced Model 3 exemplifies many of the best attributes of an electric vehicle. Then theres Teslas Supercharger network, which enables fast charging from coast-to-coast to the tune of up to 290 km of range is just 15 minutes. Using a Tesla 48A home wall connector charger, an hours charge provides about 70 kilometres of range. One caveat surrounding the Model 3, in fact regarding all Tesla models, is an increasing number of owner complaints about service. Specifically, how long somewhat routine repairs are taking and also the wait time for certain parts. To be sure these are, given the surge in Model 3 sales, growing pains as the company deals with a much larger footprint in Canadaparticularly in Vancouver, Toronto and Montreal. Base price (Standard Range): $44,999Nissan Leaf PlusNissan was at the forefront of the EV passenger vehicle revolution with the debut of the Leaf nearly 10 years ago, and in 2018 released the all-new, second-generation model, featuring new styling inside and out and a 40 kWh lithium-ion battery. For the model year 2019 Nissan upped the ante with the Plus model, its 62 kWh battery pack increasing the regular Leafs range by 50 per cent for an NRCan full-charge range of up to 363 kilometres. The Plus also has a more powerful motor (160 kW compared to 110 kW) that produces 45 per cent more power (214 horsepower) and a very respectable 250 lbs.-ft of torque. The second-gen Leaf benefits greatly from Nissans decade-long experience in the EV space, with advanced systems like the semi-autonomous ProPilot assist feature and the ePedal function that enables one-pedal driving perfectly suited for daily commutes in high-traffic urban centres. In terms of charging options, the Plus model offers the standard Level 1 and Level 2 ports, and adds a high output charge port (up to 100 kW) that provides an 80 per cent charge in just 45 minutes. And for those cold Canadian winters, heated seats, steering wheel and side mirrors come standard. Base Price (S Plus): $44,898Chevrolet BoltGM brought the Bolt to Canada in 2016 and set the new high-bar for range in an affordable EV with a full-charge range of 383 kilometres and a distinctively fun-to-drive personality. For 2020 theyve upped that very good range by some 10 per cent (417 km) without increasing the size or weight of the 66 kWh battery pack. That is thanks to a tweaked battery chemistry, but it does add 30 minutes to a full-charge session on a 240V system (10 hours) but improves on the DC Fast Charge time (160 km in 30 minutes). Apart from that range increase, the only real changes to the new Bolt are a textured front grille and bumper, and two new exterior colours (Cayenne Orange and Oasis Blue). One of the helpful features for Bolt owners is free access to the myChevrolet App2, with an Energy Assist function that allows you to view and search for charging stations, plan a trip with multiple waypoints and/or charging stops and receive alerts if the set route becomes invalid. A new feature of the app projects that Energy Assist screen to the Bolts infotainment system using Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. Canada’s getting VW’s Mk. 8 Golf and ID.4 — even if the U.S. might not

Canada is getting the new base model Volkswagen Mk. 8 Golf after all, as well as VWs new ID.4 electric car but not for a while.During the new generation’s debut last month, it seemed uncertain whether dealerships in the U.S. and Canada would see any trims of the Golf besides the high-performance GTI and R versions. Now, VW Canada has confirmed other, lower-spec trims of the Mk. 8 Golf will come to our shores, along with the high performance GTI and Golf R, though whether they hit the U.S., too, is still up in the air. The Mk. 8 Golf as well as the GTI and Golf R variants will start to arrive some time in 2021 as 2022 models, Thomas Tetzlaff, Volkswagen Canadas public relations manager, recently told The Car Guide. That means well see a small gap between the sale of the last Mk. 7 and the first Mk. 8 for some Golf variants, such as the Golf R, SportWagen and Alltrack, none of which will return for the 2020 model year.In other news, the new fully-electric ID.4 will replace the eGolf as the brands small-EV option, and will lead the way in introducing the ID lineup to Canadian showrooms. The ID.4 is a four-door crossover, with a low roofline and a small footprint. The first ID model in Canada will be the production version of the I.D. Crozz concept. This one is planned for early 2021, said Tetzlaff.Next year, Europeans will get the even-smaller ID.3, which was unveiled at the Frankfurt motor show. Whether that vehicle will make it to Canada remains to be

Bristol City Council approves first UK ban for diesel cars

Bristol City Council has approved plans for Britain’s first no-diesel zone in the city centre as part of a drive to improve air quality in the area. The so-called Clean Air Zone, to be implemented in 2021, has been devised as a means of delivering “the fastest possible improvement in air quality against targets for nitrogen dioxide (NO2) legal limits”, according to the council.  The measures will see privately-owned diesel vehicles banned from entering a designated section of the city centre between 7am and 3pm every day. A wider charging zone would be in constant operation for high-emission commercial vehicles, with vans and taxis facing a £9 fee and buses and taxis facing a £100 fee for entering it.  The announcement comes two years after Bristol City Council was ordered by the government to produce a plan for bringing the area’s NO2 levels to within legal limits. It has been suggested that the Clean Air Zone could help to achieve this by 2025.  The proposal still needs government approval, however. Bristol Mayor Marvin Rees said: “These ambitious plans demonstrate our commitment to tackling air pollution so we meet legal limits within the shortest time, without disproportionally affecting citizens on lower incomes, which would happen with a blanket approach to charging vehicles. “Protecting the most vulnerable people from pollution is central to these plans and we have ensured that all impacts have been carefully considered. If approved, mitigation measures will support those most affected, especially those living in the most deprived communities.” Nicholas Lyes, head of policy at the RAC, said the planned restrictions could have an adverse affect on roads elsewhere: “Major routes into, out of, and even around the city – like Temple Way and Brunel Way – would become out of bounds, with diesel vehicles forced onto other roads, which risks causing congestion problems where they don’t exist at the moment.” He also called attention to the fact that “drivers of diesel cars who are locked into finance packages may face a significant penalty to exit their contract early”, and suggested that drivers of older vehicles could be forced into upgrading at significant cost.  SMMT boss Mike Hawes echoed the RAC’s concerns, adding that “this proposed blanket ban, which goes against government’s guidelines, fails to distinguish between modern vehicles and decades-old technologies and will only cause confusion for drivers while also undermining efforts to boost air quality”.  The predicted cost of implementation of the scheme totals £113.5 million, with comprehensive upgrades to the city’s ANPR network, road marking and signage necessary to its successful operation. The final business case is due to be submitted to government in February next

Diesel ban for Bristol approved

Diesel ban for Bristol approved Plans to ban diesel cars from the city centre look to improve air quality Bristol will become the first city in the UK to ban diesel cars from its streets, to tackle illegal levels of air pollution. Bristol City Council voted for the plans to remove privately-owned diesel cars from the city centre between 7am and 3pm each day. The proposed scheme still needs government approval, but is set to start in 2021. Any diesel vehicles entering the zone within that time will incur a fine. Vehicles such as those used by the emergency services will be exempt from penalties, while commercial vehicles will have to pay to enter the area. In what is a wide-reaching zone, the areas impacted will include part of the M32, Redcliffe, the Harbourside, Spike Island, part of Hotwells, and the city centre, as well as the main hospitals in Bristol. The is also a Clean Air Zone proposed that would reach further out from the centre. Number plate recognition systems will be used to enforce the system, though details of how much fines are set to be are yet to be decided. Should the zone come into force in 2021, it is expected that air pollution levels will drop to compliant levels by 2025. Other cities have discussed implementing clean air zones banning the use of certain cars and London already has an Ultra Low Emission Zone in place, fining those cars that don’t reach certain Euro Missions standards. The Bristol plans look to be a blanket ban on all diesel vehicles, regardless of whether they meet the latest emissions regulations or not. There are arguments for and against the plans, with an improvement in air quality in the city centre largely undisputed. However, the blanket diesel ban – whilst allowing older, more polluting petrol vehicles in – has been suggested to be too simplistic, and a more sophisticated system would improve air quality sooner. NGC believes that the best way to improve air quality in urban areas is to move to electric vehicles, and it is hoped that the ban will add further impetus to those considering EVs in the region to make the transition.

Aston Martin DBX: pricing confirmed from £158,000

The upcoming Aston Martin DBX SUV will go on sale in the UK from £158,000, with the first official images of the car’s interior now revealed. The car, which is Aston’s first high-riding model and will arrive with the same 4.0-litre, twin-turbocharged V8 as the DB11 supercar, is set to make its debut in Beijing on the 20th November. Order books will then open, with a $189,900 asking price in the USA and €193,500 in Germany. In the UK, pricing is set to include three years of servicing as standard. A single image was released to coincide with the pricing announcement, giving a first official look at the DBX interior, with copious amounts of leather seeking to embody the firm’s characteristic blend of comfort and opulence. Visible details include perforated leather seats, an expansive panoramic glass roof, and wood-finished interior door handles. It confirms spy photos previously seen in September, which showed Aston would continue to use Mercedes-sourced switchgear and technology combined with its own bespoke trim. Previously only a single image teasing the interior had been officially released, showing a portion of the car not clad in its now-familiar prototype camouflage and revealing that a chunky black plastic rear bumper will be available. Bootspace was then confirmed as well, with the DBX’s 632-litre rear loadspace giving it a significant practicality advantage over its Bentley Bentayga rival.  The new range of accessories, available from the model’s launch, includes a number of separate options packs to suit the owner’s hobbies and pastimes. The Snow Pack, for example, contains a boot warmer, ski bag, roof-mounted ski rack and set of snow chains. The Pet Pack, meanwhile, brings a bumper protector, a portable washer and a cabin divider, while the more conventional Touring Pack comprises a tailored luggage set with first aid kit and under-seat locker.   Additional packages include the Essentials Pack, Event Pack, Interior Protection Pack and Expression Pack. Aston Martin says it has “worked with its trusted brand partners to ensure that it is offering the best solutions to customers, whatever the usage, journey or destination”.  Ahead of launch the DBX was papped without any disguise during what looks like a promotional shoot by Spanish site Autopista. As expected, the design has significantly moved on from the concept, with a front-end inspired by the DB11 and details such as a tail-lights that curve up and across the tailgate.  Although the car in these images appears to be pink, the DBX in these photos is most likely red, and the effect is simply due to low quality photography.  First orders for the high-riding Aston were taken at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance and it made its UK public dynamic debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in July. A video released on Twitter by Aston CEO Andy Palmer gives a very quick glimpse of the car’s front end without any camouflage. Aston Martin Lagonda’s most recent financial update revealed more details on the development timeline of the DBX, which is set to rival models such as the Bentley Bentayga Speed and Lamborghini Urus.  Aston started building pre-production versions of the new model at its new St Athan plant earlier this year, ahead of it going on sale in the first half of 2020. The company said it remains on track to begin series production at St Athan in the second quarter of 2020, which suggests first customer deliveries will follow in the second half of next year. The new 90-acre factory in Wales, built on a former Ministry of Defence site, has been under development since 2016 and will be the sole production facility for the DBX. The electric models of the revived Lagonda brand will also be built there. Ahead of the machine’s official launch later this year, Aston Martin previously issued images of the DBX sporting a camouflage livery reflecting its new Welsh home. The machine is currently undergoing final testing using pre-production versions. A video published earlier in the year shows the DBX undergoing extreme weather testing in Sweden at Pirelli’s Flurheden proving ground, part of the two brands’ ongoing partnership.   Speaking about that test, Aston Martin chief engineer Matt Becker said: “Testing these prototypes in cold climate conditions helps us to assess the car’s early dynamics and, crucially, ensure confidence-inspiring sure-footedness on low-grip surfaces. “This car propels Aston Martin into a new segment and our engineering team are enjoying the challenges of developing a quality luxury SUV experience through this robust testing schedule. Progress is on track and I am confident that we will deliver over and above what our customers would expect from an Aston Martin SUV.” The DBX is the first Aston Martin to go through a new dedicated test programme, to ensure it can produce the kind of dynamic on-road performance on which Aston has always made its name, allied to some credibility off

The vehicle he was driving, a 1903 Knox Runabout called Old Porcupine, crashed into a truck on Britains M23 highway. Careys wife, Billi, was airlifted to the hospital.Ron Carey was a well-known philanthropist and member of the Calgary classic car world. Some 67 of his vehicles were on display in Gasoline Alley, a car-centric exhibit at Heritage Park, along with over 200 gasoline pumps and various other memorabilia from the early days of motor vehicles. This building wouldnt exist without Mr. Careys donation, according to Heritage Park spokeswoman Alida Visbach, speaking in April of 2019. The London to Brighton run brings together pre-1905 cars to celebrate the Locomotives on Highways Act of 1896, which raised the speed limit to 23 km/h.
