GM recalls more than 600,000 vehicles for unintended braking issue

2017 GMC Sierra HDGMC GM is recalling more than 600,000 vehicles worldwide for a software issue that can cause the brakes to activate on their own.The vehicles affected are four-wheel-drive trims of the 2014 through 2018 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra; and 2015 through 2020 Chevrolet Suburban, Tahoe and GMC Yukon models equipped with the 5.3-litre V-8 and a 3.08 rear axle ratio. The issue involves the programming of the system designed to stop the wheel speeds from varying significantly. The wheel speed sensor can fail, causing the opposite side wheel to brake, pulling the vehicle to one side and increasing the risk of a crash.Vehicles with the problem will be inspected, and have their Electronic-Brake Control Module updated. No accidents have been reported yet, but the problem is potentially deadly as it involves the braking system.GM says the risk can be eliminated by driving in two-wheel-drive mode until its brought into a dealership to be fixed properly. Some 653,370 vehicles are affected worldwide. GM has not provided the NHTSA with a timeline for providing the updated software to notifying owners or dealerships, but that information should be coming shortly. To see if your vehicle is affected, visit the Chevrolet recall centre

The new Ford Bronco will be revealed spring 2020

New Bronco Logo JPGFord In what has become the worlds longest automotive striptease, Ford this morning showed the new logo its using for the upcoming Bronco. Not the truck itself, mind you. Simply the logo.Well take this opportunity to remind our readers that Ford announced the development of this vehicle in January 2017, a full 32 months ago.Thats nearly 1,000 days, in case youre wondering, a period of time equivalent to how long itll take to get through all the leftover Halloween candy. The new Bronco logo will be immediately recognizable to anyone even tangentially aware of past versions of Fords SUV, with a kicking horse to the left of the trucks name. This time around, the script font was binned in favour of a heavy block type, which could be construed as an indicator of the Broncos toughness or some other sort of marketing dross.Eagle-eyed marketers will note that both front legs of the bucking horse are visible in the new logo, unlike the original badge. The animal is also jumping at a much steeper angle than any previous iteration, though none of these observations are of any use to gleaning details about the, yknow, actual vehicle. What we do know about the truck is mostly cobbled together from conjecture and speculation. A bevy of patent applications strongly suggest the new Bronco will have removable doors and roof in similar vein as the Jeep Wrangler. All signs point to a 2.3-litre EcoBoost engine under its flat hood, possibly backed by an optional manual transmission. The latter isnt completely out of the question, by the way, nor is a three-door model in addition to the five-door. Expect some trims to come equipped with tires sized to compete with a Wrangler Rubicon. At least we now have a firm(ish) date for the trucks reveal, suggesting we are now closer to its appearance than that 2017

Reader Review: 2020 BMW M340i xDrive

Guest test driver Dan Stoffman with the 2020 BMW M340i .Brendan Miller/Postmedia As some automakers focus on SUV production to leave the world of the sedan behind them, others are more committed to the four-door vehicle than ever. Case in point, BMW.Theyve just launched their seventh-generation 3 Series with the 2020 M340i sedan and the car brings a great deal more to the driving experience. BMW accomplished this by increasing overall chassis rigidity, and the company focused on reducing weight while lowering the centre of gravity. BMW claims the 3 Series now has perfect 50/50 front and rear weight distribution. They also fitted the M340i with a new 3.0-litre inline six-cylinder engine with an aluminum crankcase and cylinder head topped off with a twin-scroll turbocharger. Power is transferred through an eight-speed Steptronic automatic transmission equipped with paddle shifters. In other markets, BMW sells a rear-wheel drive only M340i, but in Canada, the only version available is the all-wheel drive equipped M340i xDrive.Calgarian Dan Stoffman enjoys driving. His first car was a 1985 Chevy Celebrity, given to him by his grandfather. That was followed by a 1988 Toyota Camry, given to him by his father. The first vehicle he bought for himself was a 2005 Mazda3, equipped with a standard transmission and a dynamic suspension package. While he could fit his growing family wife, two kids and three dogs in the Mazda, in 2015 he opted for a more grown-up car and bought a BMW 435i Gran Coupe. My top three purchasing considerations are performance I like vehicle dynamics and horsepower, Stoffman explains, and continues, Also, it has to be big enough for family, and it needs to be all-wheel drive equipped. I do have a fourth consideration; Ive always preferred sedans over SUVs.When he was planning to replace the Mazda, he says hed never wanted a BMW.I was concerned about reliability, he says. But Id heard theyd dramatically improved their reliability and went to look at the BMWs. Id driven a number of different test vehicles, and the BMW had much more of an exhilarating drive, and it hit all my checkpoints. How did he feel about the M340i xDrive, equipped with the $8,300 Premium Excellence Package, $600 adaptive M suspension and the $1,450 Tanzanite Blue II metallic paint? All in, the car cost $72,200, not including freight, PDI or other taxes.I think the exterior lines are phenomenally striking, Stoffman says. Its a sexy car, with the overall rake its a classic BMW shape. I like the rear wheel fender flares and the way they tie in; its a muscular looking car.I was, however, a little disappointed in the kidney grille and the shape of the headlights. Its not as classic and its gone a little Japanese in the front end for me, but you do get used to it.When he got inside the car, Stoffman says everything fell into place and it didnt take him long to get comfortable in the power adjustable and heated drivers seat. The interior was finished in BMWs Cognac Vernasca leather, and the Premium Excellence Package adds oak grain open-pored wood trim.I was very impressed by the technology, he says. It was a fully digital dash, and the dials are well laid out and are easy to use. The cockpit is ergonomically made for the driver, and its really nice. After pushing the engine start button, Stoffman says he was thrilled to hear the exhaust note. This car is tuned, he says, and adds, After getting it on the road, I was grinning from ear to ear, admits Dan Soffman With the eight-speed transmission, this is a tight machine; the suspension holds the car nicely, the brakes are firm and it handles like its on rails.Even when placed in Sport or Sport Plus mode, a setting that stiffens up the suspension, Stoffman says the M340i xDrive still felt smooth and luxurious. And the customization of the driving experience is seemingly infinite, Stoffman adds. The Sport mode now allows for an individualized and customized setting for each dynamic driving input (steering, engine, transmission and suspension). The instrument cluster has multiple digital gauges and panels to enjoy, like a G-force meter, horsepower and torque gauge, or simply the media, which shows images of album covers on your instrument cluster.“After getting it on the road, I was grinning from ear to ear,” admits Dan StoffmanAlthough the trunk opening was narrow, Stoffman was able to fit his sons large rolling hockey bag, a youths hockey stick, two backpacks and a briefcase into the space. In terms of overall utility, he says the car offers plenty of room for the driver and front and rear seat passengers. Its like a high-powered Swiss Army knife, Stoffman adds, Its just very capable of doing many different tasks you could commute daily, you could take it to the track, or you could take it on a night on the town.I priced it out, and BMW has added more horsepower and more technology, and its the same price as what I paid four years ago for my 435i. BMW prices up new plug-in hybrid models in UK

BMW has revealed UK pricing and spec details for a range of new plug-in hybrids, alongside announcing updates for existing models.  The latest editions to the German maker’s PHEV line-up are the X3 xDrive30e and X5 xDrive45e, available to order from £47,565 and £63,165 respectively.  The smaller of the two, the X3, is powered by a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo petrol engine with an electric motor for a total output of 248bhp. It’s also equipped with ‘XtraBoost’, an on-demand system that adds 41bhp from the EV system at the touch of a button.  It promises an all-electric range of up to 34 miles, economy of up to 128mpg and CO2 emissions of 49g/km, alongside a 0-62mph time of 6.1sec. Production of the X3 xDrive30e will begin in December, with SE, xLine and M Sport trims offered.  The plug-in X5 makes use of a 3.0-litre inline six-cylinder engine mated to a 113bhp electric motor, combining for a peak 389bhp and 442lb ft. A significantly larger 24kWh battery allows a quoted all-electric range of 54 miles – three times that of the old model. Economy is quoted at up to 235mpg, with 39g/km of CO2, while it manages 0-62mph in 5.6sec and a 146mph top speed. The BMW 330e, which we drove earlier this year, is also now on pricing lists in the UK. It comes in four trim levels, promising 0-62mph in 6.0sec and up to 201mpg, and is priced from £37,875.  Two other BMW PHEVs, the 530e saloon and 225xe Active Tourer, see new lithium batteries fitted to improve range. The packs have the same dimensions as the ones they replace but the energy content has increased from 9.2kWh to 12kWh, boosting EV range to up to 35 miles on the 530e and 31 miles on the 225xe.  The former promises up to 156mpg and CO2 emissions as low as 36g/km, although this worsens significantly with the addition of xDrive all-wheel drive. The 225xe is claimed to offer up to

Local authorities called on to boost public EV charge point numbers

Local authorities called on to boost public EV charge point numbers A new league table highlights those areas with good or poor coverage The Transport Secretary has written to local authorities in the UK, urging them to make use of funding available to increase electric vehicle charging infrastructure. The calls from Grant Schapps MP come after the Department for Transport has published a ‘league table’ of data, showing public EV charge point numbers across areas of the UK. Using data from Zap-Map, the information shows how many public EV charge points there are per 100,000 population, broken down by local authority. There is also a separate column indicating how many rapid chargers there are in each area. The government wants driving an electric vehicle to be convenient and viable for those anywhere in the country, and that local authorities have a key role to play in the roll out of infrastructure. London is leading the way in terms of charge point numbers, with the region having almost 4,000 devices. All but two areas to have more than 100 charge points per 100,000 people are London local authorities. The City of London is comfortably top with 414 – well ahead of Westminster in second place with 190 charge points per 100,000 residents. Considering two island local authorities in Scotland are the other areas to have more than 100 points per 100,000 people, it should come as no surprise that Scotland as a region is in second place behind London. At the other end of the scale, there are still 100 local authorities that have fewer than 10 public chargers per 100,000 population. While in itself this may not be much of an issue, considering most EV charging is carried out at home, it does indicate a tougher time of things for those either visiting the area or looking to run an EV without access to off-street parking at home. Transport Secretary Grant Shapps said: “Your postcode should play no part in how easy it is to use an electric car, and I’m determined electric vehicles become the new normal for drivers. “It’s good news there are now more charging locations than petrol stations, but the clear gaps in provision are disappointing. I urge local councils to take advantage of all the government support on offer to help ensure drivers in their area don’t miss out. “To help increase the provision of charging locations, the government is offering grants for the installation of charge points on the street, in work and at home. We are also offering grants to lower the upfront cost of these cars so everyone is able to experience the benefits.” Minister for the Future of Transport George Freeman said: “Mapping charge points and producing a league table of availability by council area is intended to raise awareness. “There are now more than 22,500 public charge points and at least one rapid charge point at over 95% of all motorway services areas. To help level up the country, we’ve recently doubled the funding available for councils to build charge points on residential streets.” To take a look at the league table and a map of how local authorities perform per population, visit the DfT website here. Ford gets into aftermarket off-road parts with ARB kit for Ranger

Ford Performance and ARB 4×4 Accessories are teaming up to develop components for Ford off-road enthusiasts. The all-new winch-capable front bumper for Ford Ranger is the first component from the collaboration, bringing even greater capability to the adventure-ready Ranger.Ford Most pickup truck owners have modified their whip in some manner. Be it a simple tonneau cover or an extensive lift kit, there is no shortage of aftermarket gear to buy for ones 44.Ford is seeking to cash in on the long-running trend, teaming up with ARB 44 Accessories to develop kit for the midsize Ranger. Kicking off the collaboration is the stout front bumper you see here, one capable of accepting a winch and other off-road goodies.Designed specifically for Ranger, the all-new front bumper complements the trucks rugged lines despite turning up at the corners like a villains evil smile. It is finished in a powder coat and is built from welded sheet steel up to 3/16ths of an inch thick. Attaching to the truck using existing chassis mounting points, it continues to incorporate the full suite of Ford CoPilot360 driving aids and safety nannies. That latter point is a big deal, given that the Blue Oval has spent untold gazillions developing and marketing those features. According to Ford, its the only aftermarket steel bumper available for Ranger that meets regulatory crash test standards and can be installed on any North American Ranger configuration (the new ones, at least it probably wont fit Uncle Alvins rusty 2009 XLT).The trend of OEMs partnering with an aftermarket company is rapidly gaining steam. Chevy is currently playing house with AEV to build the Colorado ZR2 Bison, another midsize truck with acres of off-road cred. Jeep and Ram have also introduced expansive (and expensive) catalogs of rugged kit for the Wrangler, Gladiator and their line of pickup trucks. Its the latter point that impacts the company bottom line, as the cost of these accessories can often be worked into the vehicles selling price. Rather than pay $1,495 for the bumper, a dealer would be more than glad to tack $20 a month onto your payment. This also has the effect of raising the trucks average transaction price, an investor-pleasing metric.Aftermarket gear is a huge business, estimated to be a multi-billion dollar industry with plenty of room for growth. Next week, the worlds leading aftermarket companies will descend on Las Vegas for the SEMA Show, an annual soire in which hundreds of vendors show and display their wares. By teaming up with an OEM, companies like ARB and AEV are getting ahead of the game and assuring themselves a piece of a pie that is, with the likes of Jeep and Ford selling their own gear, being sliced into increasingly slim pieces. While the Blue Oval is quick to point out the diesel engine fitted to these trucks in other markets wont play in Peoria, one cannot logically assert the company which literally invented the assembly line cant figure out how to fit a set of Fox dampers and a wider track onto a North American Ranger.Hey, by all appearances, Jeremy Clarkson has one. BMW’s Hallowe’en tweet gag backfires after Benz retorts

BMW USA tweeted a(n arguably) funny Halloween message to its followers October 31, showing off a $500 BMW M5 Halloween costume it just added to is online accessories catalog wrapped around a Mercedes-AMG. Are things OK between those two? Maybe theyre going through a rough patch, who knows? All we know is this joke falls a little flat.Even worse, the whole gag feels just a little vaguely familiar probably because somebody already made literally the same joke back in 2013.Back then it was Pepsi floating the ad featuring its can costumed as a Cola Coca. Ford comes to quick agreement with U.S. workers’ union

Gary Jones, president UAW International, (left) and Bill Ford, executive chairman, Ford Motor Company, shake hands today at Ford World Headquarters to begin negotiations for the 2019 contract.Sam Varnhagen / Ford Ford has relatively quickly reached a tentative agreement with the United Auto Workers Union (UAW) in the United States, drawing a sharp contrast to the unions six-week strike at General Motors over contract bargaining there. In a statement, Ford said it has put together a proposed tentative agreement on a four-year contract with the union, but would not release any details. The UAW has 55,000 union members at Ford that must vote and ratify the deal before it takes effect.Ford and the union had been in preliminary talks prior to and during the GM strike, which ended last Saturday and is estimated to have cost that automaker about US$2.9 billion. Like other automakers, Ford faces an overall decline in U.S. and Canadian sales, as well as pressure to invest in autonomous technologies for cars that are still well in the future. In discussing its third-quarter 2019 earnings, Ford said it is also facing fourth-quarter headwinds of higher warranty costs, North American incentives that will be more generous than expected, and a drop in sales volumes in China. Uncertainties over commodities, tariffs and currency exchange could also affect its bottom line.In Canada, Ford will cut some 450 workers at its plant in Oakville, Ontario, its second round of layoffs at the facility this year. The latest cutbacks are blamed on the decision to end production of the Ford Flex and Lincoln MKT, which are built at the Oakville plant. The workers are expected to be laid off early next year.Ford previously announced it will concentrate on trucks and SUVs rather than cars, and will soon be unveiling a new F-150, Super Duty and Bronco. It will keep the Mustang, of course, and is promising an innovative, Mustang-inspired battery-electric vehicle as well.Once the UAW votes on the Ford contract, it will move on to talks with Fiat Chrysler (FCA), although the automaker’s recent plan to merge with Europe’s PSA Group could disrupt what might otherwise have been equally-smooth

The 2020 Porsche 911 Carrera will have a seven-speed manual transmission

2020 Porsche 911Derek McNaughton / Driving Porsche is catering to the #savethemanual crowd, and were totally here for it. The 992 generation of 911 wasnt previously offered with a manual, but it is now three-pedal mafia, rejoice! To get the manual, youll have to step up to the Carrera S, Carrera S Cabriolet, Carrera 4S or the Carrera 4S Cabriolet. Base 911s without the S suffix will not feature this 7-speed manual yet.Interestingly, the manual option costs as much as the most expensive PDK automatic transmission option youd assume the manual should be cheaper, right? Well, Porsche knows that, too, and instead of charging more money for the less-sought-after transmission, its decided to pair it with the Sport Chrono Package. The Sport Chrono Package adds a mechanical limited-slip differential with torque vectoring, dynamic drivetrain mounts, Porsche Suspension Management Sport Mode, active rev-matching and a steering wheel-mounted mode selector.Of course, the manual option is slower than the PDK automatic option about half-a-second slower to 100 km/h from zero. But who cares? The point of a manual transmission is the engagement with the vehicle, not the actual speed youre not supposed to be street racing anyway!Besides being more fun, the manual option also adds lightness. Some 84 pounds were left in Stuttgart as a result of the tranny swap, dropping the weight down to 3,298 pounds, lighter than the base Carrera.Three-pedal 2020 Porsche 911s are now available to order, and arrive in dealerships starting spring of 2020. Pricing starts at US$113,300 for the Carrera S and goes up to US$133,400 for the Carrera 4S
