The location chosen for the premiere store? Montreal.According to Automotive News, the Swedish brand, now owned by Chinese company Geely, will open up its first retail store on Groupe Park Avenue, in Brossard, Quebec near Montreal.Hugues Bissonnette, a Quebec native, has been appointed the brands Canadian manager. Hugues was most recently the director of sales operations for Volvo Cars Canada; now he will spearhead all of Polestars Canadian commercial efforts.Hugues has the right skill set, developed over time working in both the Americas and Europe, and I am confident he will have great success launching Polestar in Canada, Gregor Hembrough, head of Polestar in the Americas, said in a statement. The company calls the dealerships Polestar Spaces, and this latest Space will be run in partnership with Groupe Park Avenue, which runs 18 auto dealerships split between 12 different brands. The Polestar dealer will have no inventory, however; the vehicles will be made to order. On top of this principal Space, there will also be smaller retail Spaces in high-traffic areas closer to downtown that can house two or three cars and a few no-commission product specialists and demonstrators.Polestar Montreal will open in 2020, and will be followed by Polestar Spaces in Toronto and Vancouver before making its way down to the

Tentative contract shows U.S. union still has power, but members ready to work
Striking United Auto Workers members picket at the General Motors Lansing Parts and Warehouse for the fifth week of the strike on October 16, 2019 in Lansing, Michigan.Bill Pugliano / Getty On the picket lines at a General Motors transmission plant in Toledo, Ohio, passing cars honked and striking workers celebrated a tentative contract deal by munching on 10 pizzas dropped off by a supporter. They had carried signs for 31 days and demonstrated the muscle the United Auto Workers union still has over Detroits three manufacturers.Details of the four-year pact werent released, but GMs latest offer to end the monthlong strike included wage increases and lump-sum payments, top-notch health insurance at little cost to workers, promises of new products for many U.S. factories and a path to full-time work for temporary workers.Thats a big difference from what GM wanted going into the talks: to slash total labour costs at its factories, which are about US$13 per hour higher than at foreign automakers in the U.S.Terry Dittes, the UAWs chief bargainer with GM, said the deal offers major gains for 49,000 union workers who have been walking picket lines since Sept. 16. Theyll stay off work for at least a couple more days while union committees decide if they will bless the deal. Then workers will have to vote on it. The deal shows that the union, with less than one-third of the 1.5 million members it had at its peak in 1979, still has a lot of clout with GM, Ford and Fiat Chrysler.I think economically the UAW will do just fine in this agreement, said Art Schwartz, a former GM negotiator who now is a labour consultant in Michigan. The union certainly still has power in this industry.President Donald Trump called UAW President Gary Jones on Wednesday night, but union spokesperson Brian Rothenberg said he did not know what the men discussed. The strike immediately brought GMs U.S. factories to a halt, and within a week, started to hamper production in Mexico and Canada. Analysts estimated the stoppage cut GM vehicle production by 250,000 to 300,000 vehicles, and the costs to GM will hit around US$2 billion.Workers, on the other hand, lost north of $3,000 each on average, the difference between their base wages and $250 per week in strike pay from the union. Its nice to see theres a deal, but without knowing the details Im a little skeptical because we dont know the highlights or the lowlights, said worker Nick Kuhlman, who was among the strikers huddled around a burn barrel on a blustery, gray Toledo afternoon.I just hope it gets done, said Toledo worker Mark Nichols, who thought the strike would last only a week or two and was ready to get back to work because his savings are running low. Striking United Auto Workers members picket at the General Motors Lansing Parts and Warehouse for the fifth week of the strike on October 16, 2019 in Lansing, Michigan. Bill Pugliano / Getty GM apparently was able to close three of four factories that it wanted to shutter to get rid of excess capacity in slow-selling cars and components. The Detroit-Hamtramck plant will get a new electric pickup truck and stay open, but factories in Lordstown, Ohio; Warren, Michigan; and near Baltimore are to be closed. The Lordstown area will get an electric vehicle battery factory, but it wont have nearly as many workers as the assembly plant that for years made compact GM cars. The deal now will be used as a template for talks with GMs crosstown rivals, Ford and Fiat Chrysler. Normally the major provisions carry over to the other two companies and cover about 140,000 auto workers nationwide. It wasnt clear which company the union would bargain with next, or whether there would be another strike. The strike had shut down 33 GM manufacturing plants in nine states across the U.S., and also took down factories in Canada and Mexico. It was the first national strike by the union since a two-day walkout in 2007, and the longest since a 54-day strike in Flint, Michigan in 1998 that also halted most of GMs

Hyundai teases silly off-road Veloster concept for SEMA
SEMA is typically the place where all the most ridiculous custom vehicles gather to make us gag, but in recent years its actually been a hotbed for manufacturers who want to bring out some factory-built custom cars. And this year Hyundai is bringing a real doozy. Its called the Grappler, aptly named after its chunky tires and off-road looks. Its Hyundais idea of a pre-runner Veloster, and we love it.More than just a set of tires and a lift, the Grappler has seen the front bumper ditched in favour of a skid plate and fog lights. On the roof is a classic tubular roof rack with a spare tire and an LED light bar; according to Hyundai the rack is also the base for a solar panel. This is clearly just an artists rendering of the final product (and a poorly one done, at that) but we fully expect Hyundai to bring this car to SEMA. A few years ago, Hyundai also brought a few customized vehicles to the show, including a jacked-up Santa Fe complete with Rockstar energy drink stickers and digital camo.Hyundai wont likely bring the vehicle to production, but that wont stop us from wanting one. Luckily, it wouldnt be too hard to take the bumper off and add a roof rack to a Veloster to make our own; wed love to see a bunch of these out on the trail embarrassing bros in their massive

Could Dodge be building a track-capable Challenger ACR?
The entire automotive world was saddened to learn Dodges crazy V10-powered supercar, the Viper, was going to die in 2017. The Vipers departure left a gap in the companys lineup, too, for a new track-focused sports car. Now, it seems like Dodge might be gearing up to convert one of its mainstay vehicles into a track-ready weapon the Challenger.According to sources speaking to MoparInsiders.com, Dodge could be bringing the ACR (American Club Racer) trim from the Viper back to its Challenger lineup, for the models 50th anniversary. This isnt the first time well have seen an ACR-type take on a Challenger, however. Back in 2011, the brand built a concept vehicle for SEMA featuring lightweight components made from carbon-fibre, plus some neat aero bits. The concept was never made a reality due to manufacturing cost, but now seems just as good a time as any to revitalize the lineup once again, as Dodge did with the Demon in 2018. The Challenger isnt foreign to road racing. Back in the 1970s, it dominated the Trans Am field at the hands of Sam Posey, and its sister car, the Cuda, didnt do too bad, either. Just like in the 70s, a Challenger ACR could do battle with the likes of the Ford Mustang GT350 and the Chevrolet ZL1 1LE.With the Challenger platform getting very old at this point, Dodge will be looking for ways to keep the vehicle interesting until its re-designed in 2023. Whether it will actually happen remains to be seen, but we can already envision a lime-green Challenger with Minilite wheels coming to a track near

The U.S. gov’t is auctioning off Burt Reynolds’ customized Trans Am
Some 149 classic cars will be auctioned by federal U.S. Marshals this month in the wake of a court case that saw them seized from the owners of an Eastern California solar panel company. And a few of the lots are real gems that shine brighter than others.DC Solar, run by Jeff and Pauline Carpoff, allegedly scammed billionaire Warren Buffet and others out of US$800 million in a Ponzi scheme, says the courts. The cars were seized in December by the FBI.The most interesting car in the auction is a 1978 Pontiac Trans Am. According to a press release from the U.S. Marshals Service, the vehicle was owned by Burt Reynolds himself as a memento of the car he drove in the movie Smokey and the Bandit. The vehicle only has 3,394 miles on the odometer. From the photos, we can tell the vehicle has been customized with larger aluminum wheels, which strongly suggests this was Burts personal Trans Am, the one modified with a 600-horsepower 8.2-litre V8.If it is indeed the same vehicle, that means when Jeff or Pauline Carpoff bought it at auction, they actually got to shake hands with the Bandit himself. The vehicle was last sold at Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale, where it fetched US$275,000. This could be a chance to get yourself a real bargain! Its the largest single car collection weve ever sold, according to Marshals Services Lynzey Donahue. Proceeds from the auction will be held until the court case resolves, and the judge determines where they will

SUV Review: 2019 Porsche Macan S
2020 Porsche Macan SBrian Harper / Driving OVERVIEW Compact-size, 5-passenger sport/luxury crossover PROSSports car-like handling dynamics, very quick, comfortable front seats CONSPrice of options borders on gouging, rear seat cramped for adult passengers VALUE FOR MONEYFair WHAT TO CHANGE?Reduce weight by 150-200 kg; standardize some options HOW TO SPEC IT?As is with about $15,000 fewer options By the time the compact-sized Macan debuted back in 2014, the Cayenne Porsches mid-sized (and first) crossover had been out for 12 years and was already into its second generation. So, the righteous indignation from purists, outraged that the German manufacturer would build anything other than a sports car, had pretty much run its course. That the Macan would succeed the Cayenne as Porsches best-selling model was just further proof of public acceptance. This continues today; the company recently released worldwide sales figures for the first half of 2019 with the Macan accounting for 35 per cent of those sales, and the Cayenne 32 per cent. If you love the 911, Boxster, Cayman, or Panamera, respect the fact the two crossovers provide the vast majority of the profits that allow Porsche to continue building great sports cars.As with literally every model Porsche makes, the Macan is offered with multiple trim/performance levels base, Sport Edition, S, GTS, and three variations of the Turbo. The 2019 model year sees a freshening of the base and S. In addition to a redesigned front fascia, with notable changes to the grille, lower air intakes and headlights, the latter features a new 3.0-litre turbocharged V6 mated to a seven-speed PDK transmission. The engine generates 348 horsepower and 354 pound-feet of torque, slight increases compared with the 3.0L twin-turbo V6 used in previous S versions. Official figures released by the company indicate the revised S will accelerate to 100 km/h in 5.1 seconds, five seconds even with the optional Sport Chrono package. Top speed also increases slightly to 254 km/h, for the armchair quarterbacks who hold such numbers dear. Im not going to try to convince you the Macan S is a 911 in crossover disguise. Thats an argument not worth the effort. But I will say the Macan S is a sports car among crossovers there is nothing soft or flouncy about it, no compromise for gentler aesthetes. Even left to its own devices, without switching from Normal drive mode to Sport or Sport Plus, or activating the Sport Chrono, theres an eagerness to it just waiting for the opportunity to prove itself. This Porsche is in the business of pushing boundaries, happily sacrificing a measure of civility in exchange for a rewarding drive. Not that the S is overtly harsh, but its nonetheless very firm, with a ride somewhat compromised by the testers optional 21-inch performance rubber ($5,060, including the Spyder Design rims). While nothing really filters up into the passenger cabin, you will still become aware of any tarmac irregularities encountered, the upside being able to take corners flat and at a higher speed should that be your jam than what is typical of the crossover segment.Never content to leave well enough alone, Porsche engineers made a few chassis revisions as part of the Macans 2019 facelift. On the front axle, strut forks made from aluminum replace the previous steel components, thereby reducing unsprung mass. Newly tuned anti-roll bars also ensure more neutral handling, and furthermore, the S gains larger and thicker front brake discs.Everything about the Macan has a muscular heft to it, and I dont just mean the crossovers curb weight, which exceeds 1,900 kilograms. The steering, naturally, but even things like the gear shifter actuation and the way the doors shut. Theres no sports car lightness to this machine, despite the fact, as I said earlier, its a sports car in crossover form. The seeming contradiction makes itself clearer the more the S is pushed; then it reveals Porsches DNA with a surge and a snarl, the latter amplified through an optional ($3,350) sport exhaust system. And speaking of options, the tester certainly had enough of them, inflating what might be considered a reasonable base price ($63,000) for a Porsche, to a borderline obscene $93,670. I know plenty of Porsche buyers are more than happy to pay the freight to get their vehicles just so, but the depth to which the company is willing to extract what it believes its due still bewilders. Lets talk cosmetics, for example: The testers bright and bold Carmine Red paint job sets one back $3,560. OK, you like red, who doesnt? But then Porsche wants another $770 to paint the sideblades the same colour. Plus another $840 for tinted LED taillights. Plus $270 to paint the window trim black, and another $460 for complementary-coloured roof rails. The worst: $330 for the Porsche crest to be embossed on the front headrests. Its nickel-and-diming to me, but hey, its your money. The Macans

Land Rover’s TReK 2020 is a punishing thrill ride
It’s 5:45 am, and finally light enough to snap on a life jacket and plunk my butt into a very tippy kayak. The water is warm, but the fog is thick. I can make out the arc of a few other paddles, but not the faces of those swinging them. I fumble with the Garmin GPS unit clipped to my vest; the satellite coordinates are the only way I’ll find my destination (a duck decoy that must be turned over to reveal a clue written on its bottom) but my hands are wet, the jacket bulky. I silently envy my two teammates, who – one running, one mountain biking – will have posted signs showing them their routes. I’ll later find out that five-km run was mostly uphill, and many of the mountain bikers doubled their route due to an easily missed sign. I will feel guilty all day, but at least I’ve finally started this journey.Or rather, this Land Rover TReK.This competition is a unicorn in the world of off-road competition. First debuted in 1996, it went global in 2001, but was mothballed in 2003. The event is being re-upped in anticipation of the release of the new Land Rover Defender, which will hit showrooms in 2020. It’s for those who work in dealerships, not seasoned pros or pampered press. It gives three-person teams from Land Rovers retailers across Canada and the U.S. a chance to spend two intense days testing their off-road driving skills, navigation chops and ability to collaborate. You need all three; if you cant find the station youre aiming for in the dense forest (the entire thing is under strict time constraints) you cant prove your driving skill. If you cant collectively solve puzzles to find clues to even begin, youll be mired in metaphoric mud instead of actual mud. Think Amazing Race meets Survivor meets Camel Trophy. It’s mostly men, but as one of only two media teams on the pilot wave (guys from Motor Trend were the other) this Canadian contingent of women is determined to play hard. There are disadvantages; it takes two of us to hoist the tire we will change, and I still want a redo on something called “Rat Trap.” A tight circle formed from a series of vertical rods, you drive your truck (we’re using spanky new Land Rover Discoveries) into the centre, turn it 180 degrees, and drive out. Easy, right? Nah. You have about two feet of clearance all around the truck. Time constraints or not, we soon learn that taking a moment to plan your attack saves time in the long run. We get out of shape pretty fast and end up executing the world’s most stressful thousand-point turn. At day’s end, we’ve missed out on one of the gnarliest stations of off-roading, plowing through water halfway up the doors. Next year. The night before the event, we climb into tents perched rather precariously on the slope of a rolling hill at the Biltmore Estate in Asheville, North Carolina where Land Rover maintains a year-round Experience Centre (you can pay to go and thrash Land Rovers in the muck). We’ve spent the evening finally getting a glimpse of what we will be facing, but not much of one. A laminated sheet outlines the map of the following day’s events, but with vague names and just satellite coordinates of their location, it’s up to the individual teams to decide where to go when, how to use their time, and which points are worth chasing. We have zero knowledge of which station will hold what task.Allie, our main driver, is a crackerjack off-roader with her own Jeep tucked away in a garage back home. Lesley and I have been kicking around the industry for a lot of years, and greet many of the Land Rover instructors by name. I spent eight days lost in the Sahara desert last year on the Gazelle Rally, which means I’m default navigator (and promptly get us lost within ten minutes). Lesley can get tires off a car in a few minutes, and both women take advantage of that evening session to learn the winching system our truck will be sporting. I input all the long coordinates into our Garmin, a useful, frustrating little device that is only helpful if you’re moving. We will spend too much time the next day trudging through forests, brambles tearing at our sporty new clothing looking for clues nailed to trees. So, why? This event is for retailers. If you work at a Land Rover dealership, whether in back or out front, you can assemble a team to enter. Its not free; dealers pay for a truck, and for travel costs to send a team to the qualifying waves. But that intense sense of competition, and ability to see what these trucks can really do hell, what they were meant to do return teams to their respective jobs with an unbelievable high. That enthusiasm translates to their work, and to sales, and the entire store. If you Google past years of Land Rover TReK events, you’ll see a lot of testosterone. This year, there were five women on teams from the 53 competing retailers. It’s a start, but I really hope more women will get involved, and their employers will encourage them to. The winners of each wave go on to Palm Springs in

Mazda releases more details on its first EV
Mazda’s first electric vehicle, to be revealed at Tokyo motor show next week, will develop the design language first seen on the recently launched Mazda3 to reflect “futuristic values and changing lifestyles,” said the car maker. The model, which will go on sale next year, has a coupe-like cabin and “achieves a lightweight look by adopting a unique door concept”. Mazda added that the front face bears a “friendly expression”. The interior is said to use empty spaces around the centre console to create a closeness between the driver and passenger seats. Mazda added that interior materials were chosen for comfort and “eco-friendliness”, both of which are intended to make the cabin comfortable. The model, previewed by the e-TPV prototype, will adopt an SUV bodystyle, which can more easily accommodate an underfloor battery pack. The latest information from Mazda follows confirmation last month that it would launch its first electric car on 23 October. The model, previewed by the e-TPV prototype, is expected to adopt an SUV bodystyle, which can more easily accommodate an underfloor battery pack. It will use a similar set-up to the prototype, which has a 35.5kWh battery and a single electric motor delivering 138bhp and 195lb ft of torque to the the front wheels via a single-speed transmission. The EV is likely to have a range between 120 and 150 miles, similar to the new Mini Electric but significantly less than more obvious rivals, such as the 279-mile Hyundai Kona Electric. It will be able to accept 6.6kW domestic charging and 50kW public rapid charging. Mazda will also introduce a modern version of its famed rotary engine in a range-extender variant of the EV. Two years ago, Mazda boss Mitsuo Hitomi confirmed that, rather than being used in its purest form, a rotary engine will be used as an EV range-extender. He said: “The rotary engine isn’t particularly efficient to use as a range-extender, but when we turn on a rotary, it’s much, much quieter compared to other manufacturers’ range-extenders”. The Japanese firm’s range hasn’t featured a rotary-engined road car since the RX-8 went out of production in 2012, but it did produce a rotary range-extender Mazda 2 prototype – which Autocar drove – back in 2013. It has remained interested in reintroducing the technology to production since. The Mazda RX-Vision Concept, which was shown at the Tokyo motor show in 2015, used such a powertrain. Mazda has eschewed hybrid and electric models in recent years, instead choosing to focus on improving the efficiency of its petrol engines. This year, it introduced spark plug-controlled compression ignition to the latest Mazda 3, with the promise that it will “combine the economy and torque of a diesel engine with the performance and lower emissions of a petrol

First Drive: 2020 Audi RS 7
2020 Audi RS 7Graeme Fletcher / Driving There was very little wrong with the outgoing Audi RS 7. The only nit boiled down to the fact there just wasnt enough visual differentiation between the regular A7 and its uber-fast sibling. The design team mustve heard the comment and styled the new model accordingly; the 2020 RS 7 shares just four bits with the mortal A7 the front doors, roof and platform. Thats it!Up front, the grille is more pronounced with larger air inlets, and the front fenders are 20 millimetres wider on each side. It is, to use Audi-speak, now a wide body. The headlights are also new dynamic matrix LEDs with slick daytime running lights embedded within. It also has a bolder tail with stronger shoulders, an RS-specific bumper with a rear diffuser, and a new take on the taillights. The overall effect is fetching and differentiated, to say the least.Inside, the changes are relatively small. The RS front buckets are superb, holding the riders in place without confining, and Audis Virtual Cockpit has been reworked so the serious driver can track the g-forces within the instrument cluster and the forces at play when the RS7 is driven hard climb very quickly. When pushed through a fast left-hander heading onto an unrestricted section of Autobahn the RS 7 was pulling 1.22 G. After merging onto the highway with foot buried, the RS 7 just kept pulling to 293 km/h. At this point, the tunnel vision forced a lift! While the top speed is capped at 250 km/h, adding the dynamic package plus bumps it to 305 km/h. The package adds all-wheel steering, Audis sport rear differential, and massive carbon ceramic rotors with 10-piston front calipers this combination is necessary to keep things sane at speeds that would see a Boeing 787 Dreamliner lift off.The blistering turn of speed and the manner in which the RS 7 makes light work of a hairpin is down to the work beneath the brightwork. It starts with the 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8. This thing can be likened to lightning in a bottle; keep the cap on and its a controlled light show that sees the RS 7 purr about town in a quiet and civilized manner. Uncap it, though, and the 592 horsepower and, more importantly, the 590 pound-feet of torque anywhere between 2,050 and 4,500 rpm flash to the fore and give real meaning to fast. There is no turbo lag off the line and the mid-range punch is astounding. The potent V8 also works with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system and cylinder deactivation to improve fuel economy. In the end, the RS 7 runs to 100 km/h in 3.6 seconds. Thats excellent, but it does not speak to the pace through mid-range and beyond. It turns out the human thumb is not fast enough to log an accurate 80 to 120 km/h passing time. Lets just say it sits just over two seconds. The power is relayed to the optional P285/30R22 tires and an RS-tuned version of Audis Quattro all-wheel-drive system through an eight-speed manumatic transmission. In this case, the Quattro system sends 60 per cent of the power to the rear wheels and 40 to the front, giving the RS 7 a rear-drive feel. However, the system can send up to 85 per cent of the power rearward, or up to 70 up front, if conditions demand. The RS 7 also delivers real-time torque vectoring by physically altering the drive being sent to the left or right wheel through a corner. This action, combined with the dynamic variable rate steering, sees the RS 7 dive into a corner with tenacity and unerring precision. This is amped up with the new all-wheel steering system; at speed the rear wheels turn in the same direction as the fronts to sharpen the response. In a parking, lot they turn in the opposite direction, cutting the turning circle by one metre. The 2020 Audi RS 7 is a riotous ride that touches both ends of the performance spectrum perfectlyThere are two suspension choices. The first is the RS adaptive air suspension with a 10-millimetre lower ride height compared to the A7. While it will likely be the more popular choice, its the RS Sport Suspension Plus with Dynamic Ride Control (DRC) that delivers the best balance between ride comfort and outright handling. The air springs are replaced with steel springs and there are three-stage dampers. The softest setting is taut but compliant, but at the opposite end, the RS 7 hunkers down and rides out a corner with basically no body roll. Given the RS 7 weighs in at 2,065 kilograms, it handles more like the smaller RS 5 than the large luxury sedan that it is.The only piece of overkill is the number of driving modes. Along with Efficiency, Comfort, Auto, and Dynamic come two customizable modes RS1 and RS2. If you factor in the engine/transmission, steering, suspension, all-wheel-drive and exhaust sound adjustments, each of which has three sub-settings, along with the drive and sport modes for the transmission, the possible permutations are bewildering.Cut to the chase and leave Auto as the default mode. Select city-friendly settings for all facets and

The gearheads at Emory Motorsports have created another stunner in the Porsche Outlaw scene. For all you Porsche nerds out there, youll know the companys Speedsters were made between 1954 and 1958, replaced by the Convertible D in 1959. This custom car represents a fictional 1959-1/2 Transitional model. The car started out as a rusted hulk, with a roof so badly damaged that Rod Emory and his team decided to ditch it entirely. The client for the vehicle was fully on board with a Speedster look, so Emory Motorsports obliged, hand-forming the aluminum tonneau cover and headrest fairing. In the trunk is a classic Porsche flat-four, but now displacing 2.4-litres and making 205 horsepower thanks to Weber 48 IDA carburetors and MSD twin-plug ignition. The engine drives the rear wheels only thanks to a lightweight four-speed gearbox. The suspension has also been heavily revised with a 901-style independent rear setup, as well as adjustable Koni dampers and upgraded sway bars. Brake rotors and calipers borrow heavily from the 911, and the 15-by-5-inch wheels with Dunlop SP 5000 tires stick it to the ground. To finish it all off, the car is painted in a period-correct Aquamarine Metallic paint, with a beautiful contrasting red
