New car registrations in the UK rose slightly year-on-year in September, but car industry bosses have warned that ongoing political uncertainty over Brexit is stunting market growth. A total of 343,255 new cars were registered last month, a modest rise of 4421 units, or 1.3%, from September 2018, according to Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) figures. The rise had been expected, because registrations that month were badly hit by delays in car production due to the introduction of the new WLTP emissions testing regulations, falling 20.5%. But the year-on-year increase in the UK last month was significantly smaller than in other European Union (EU) countries that were also affected by the new test rules, and the domestic market continues to struggle. In the first nine months of 2019, a total of 1,862,271 cars have been registered here, a year-on-year decline of 2.5%. SMMT boss Mike Hawes attributed the continued struggles to ongoing political uncertainty, saying: “We expected to see a more significant increase in September, similar to those seen in France, Germany, Italy and Spain, given the negative effect WLTP had on all European markets last year. “Instead, consumer confidence is being undermined by political and economic uncertainty. We need to restore stability to the market, which means avoiding a ‘no deal’ Brexit and, moreover, agreeing a future relationship with the EU that avoids tariffs and barriers that could increase prices and reduce buyer choice.” The September new car registration figures did show some positive trends, however. Sales of electric cars continued to rise, with the 7704 registered a 236.4% year-on-year increase. Plug-in hybrid sales also rose year-on-year for the first time in six months, with the 5179 units registered up 1.5% from September 2018., Notably, the outgoing Vauxhall Corsa was the best-selling car in the UK last month, with 12,921 examples registered. The perennially popular Ford Fiesta was second in the sales chart, with 11,643 sold, and remains the best-selling car of 2019 so far, with a total of 64,564 registrations. The Corsa is second in the yearly charts, with a total of 47,547 registrations. The Mercedes-Benz A-Class was the third most popular car in September, ahead of the Mini hatchback, Nissan Qashqai and Ford Focus. The Tesla Model 3 was the third best-selling car in the UK in August but didn’t feature in September’s top

21 cars from Paul Walker’s collection heading to auction
Actor Paul Walker tragically passed away in a car accident in 2013 at the age of 40, but his legacy has lived on in multiple ways. The Fast and Furious film franchise marches on – it’s been at least six weeks since the last one was released, so the next sequel is due any day now – and there are charitable organizations like Reach Out Worldwide, which Walker founded himself in 2010 in order to help bring first responders to disaster areas; plus the Paul Walker Foundation, which was founded posthumously by his family and is dedicated to gathering resources and attention for issues like climate change. Another strong reminder of the man who brought Brian O’Conner to life on the big screen is the impressive collection of cars he amassed in his lifetime, most of which are now set to be auctioned off by Barrett-Jackson in its upcoming 2020 Scottsdale auction. The Paul Walker Collection is made up of 21 cars, trucks and bikes, including a vintage Ford Bronco, a 2009 Nissan 370Z used in the making of Fast Five, and seven BMW M3s. Of the seven M3s, five are from the 1995 run of Lightweights, which included just 125 cars total. “Paul Walker’s collection spanned five decades of automotive excellence and truly reflected his personal taste,” said Steve Davis, president of Barrett-Jackson. “Paul’s passion for performance was especially expressed in the cars he loved. This group of vehicles also represents the evolution of the hobby, as collectors are clearly broadening their horizons and diversifying their collections.”Here’s the full roster of wheels as listed on B-J. 1963 Chevrolet Nova Wagon 1964 Chevrolet Chevelle Wagon 1967 Chevrolet II Nova 1988 BMW M3 E30 1989 Nissan R32 Skyline Race Car 1991 BMW M3 E30 Coupe 1995 BMW M3 E36 Lightweight 1995 BMW M3 E36 Lightweight 1995 BMW M3 E36 Lightweight 1995 BMW M3 E36 Lightweight 1995 BMW M3 E36 Lightweight – Factory LTW wing and race-livery delete 1995 Ford Bronco SUV 2000 Audi S4 2003 Ford F250 Pickup 2004 GMC Sierra 1500 Pickup 2005 Harley-Davidson RS Motorcycle 2006 Toyota Tundra Pickup 2008 Suzuki Motorcycle 2009 Nissan 370Z 2011 BMW Motorcycle 2013 Ford Mustang Boss 302S Race Car The Paul Walker collection will go under the hammer at Barrett-Jackson’s annual Scottsdale auction in January 2020.

BMW unveils X5 M and X6 M, with Competition packages for each
BMW X5M BMW X6MBMW Whereas once it used to focus on hot wagons basically suicide for sales these days now BMW is turning its performance aspirations on tuned versions of its popular SUVs. The next trucks to receive the M treatment are the companys X5 and X6.From the outside, you probably wouldnt know it was an M, if you didnt see the badges. A black grille and new splitter are present, and there are a couple new gills in the side panels to go along with the aerodynamically optimized mirrors.Under the skin is where the changes really matter, though. For the M versions of both vehicles, BMWs venerable 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 from the M5 has been pressed into service, making 600 horsepower and 553 lb.-ft. of torque. Stepping up to the Competition spec in either model means a bump up to a whopping 625 horsepower. The massive power boost from stock means the performance has also, well, improved, to make an understatement. Now 100 km/h shows up from zero in just 3.9 seconds for the M, and 3.8 seconds for the M Competition. Both engines are hooked up to an eight-speed automatic transmission.Unfortunately, BMW has not included a selectable rear-drive mode like it has in the M5, so drivers will have to settle for the 4WD Sport mode when making those pulls. Peel back a few more layers and we see the overpowered people-haulers also sport an M electronic differential, M exhaust and M brakes (which are a huge 15.6 and 15 inches, front and rear, respectively).Canadian pricing and availability have not been

New record for EV registrations in September
New record for EV registrations in September Pure electric sales smashed the previous sales record September was a record month for the electric car market, with more than 7,700 pure-electric models registered. Combined with more than 5,000 plug-in hybrid registrations, the total electric vehicle figure for September 2019 was almost 12,900 units. The latest figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders show significant growth for the EV market. Pure-electric registrations rose 236% compared to September 2018, and even PHEVs – recently in decline – saw a 23% increase. This is against the backdrop of an overall market that grew 1.3% The pure-electric sales record is beaten by some considerable margin. The previous record for a single month’s pure-EV registrations was in March 2019, with 3,917 units. September 2019’s 7,704 registrations smashes that record. To put it into context, only four months total EV sales – pure-electric and PHEV combined – have topped September 2019’s pure EV numbers. Pure-electric market share for September finished at 2.2%, and 3.8% for EVs and PHEVs combined. It’s the joint third highest market share in the UK, impressive considering it fell in September. September and March are traditionally strong months for the car market as a whole as these are the times when the new registration plates arrive. In March for example, the total EV registrations of almost 8,900 was one of the highest on record, though considering the strong performance of the rest of the market, it only made up 1.9% of total sales. PHEVs saw a good performance considering much of the year has been a struggle for the sector. March to July 2019 saw continuous decline compared to 2018, and August only saw 1.8% growth. September’s figure of 5,179 units made up 85% growth compared to last year’s sales. September’s figures mean that we are now comfortably ahead of the same stage last year. Jan-Sept 2018 had 44,688 electric vehicles registered – 11,270 EVs and 33,418 PHEVs. New electric vehicle registrations to the end of September 2019 have seen 48,056 models registered – 25,072 of them pure-electric and 22,984 PHEVs. It means the UK is 7.5% ahead of where it was at the same stage last year. The impressive sales look to have come about due to a combination of factors. Increased choice for customers is coming on-line, with new models from the likes of Mercedes and Tesla adding to registration figures. On top of that, increased supply of newer models from Audi and Kia means more customers are registering their cars. PHEVs seem to be lifted by a similar increase in options. Where many manufacturers had sold out of previous generation PHEVs, the likes of VW and BMW have brought out new versions in popular sectors – particularly valuable to fleet buyers – which has made a greater number of models available.

Buy them before we do: second-hand picks for 4 October
As summer fades to grey, there’s just time to grab a soft-top such as this, a Lexus SC430. It’s not the prettiest on the block but you won’t fault its quality, especially if you buy a facelifted one such as the 2006/06- reg we found for £10,495. (It cost around £60,000 when new.) Lexus SC430, £10,495: Earlier cars had a brittle and lumpy ride and mediocre handling, partly cured by changes to the suspension in 2002 but properly fixed in 2004. Then in 2006, the model was treated to fresh bumpers and new 18in alloy wheels. The SC430 was launched in 2001. It’s powered by a silky 4.3-litre V8, producing 282bhp and driving the rear wheels through a five-speed automatic gearbox. The folding roof is aluminium (it takes a yawning 25 seconds to do its thing) and the 2+2 cabin is trimmed in wood and leather. Talking of luxury, the climate control system can detect whether the roof is open or closed and manage the flow of air to suit. There’s also a powerful Mark Levinson sound system and powered and heated seats. We’ll gloss over the touchscreen system and satnav, items now best off in a museum. Owners tend to be enthusiasts tuned into the value and quality of their cars, so you’ll rarely find a dud SC430. Still, you can never be too careful. Trouble spots are the cooling system and gearbox oil cooler, which can leak fluid into each other, and the timing belt tensioner. The gearbox fluid should be changed every 45,000 miles. Rust can take hold around the rear underside, including the subframe, and tired seals can hobble the hood. Inside, check the door speakers are working. A good one is a future classic. BMW 545i SE Touring, £4995: In the absence of an M5 Touring, here’s the next best thing. This 2004/04-reg 545i has done 92,000 miles and has full service history. The ride will loosen your fillings but forget that and concentrate instead on its deliciously sonorous V8 engine. What’s good enough for 800 aficionado Alan Partridge… This richly appointed 1998-reg Sterling has done only 77,000 miles. It has full main dealer service history – although the official Rover dealer network was disbanded in 2005… Take one long-wheelbase S-Class, reengineer it to be even better, stretch it, make it roomier and fill it with features and you have the Maybach S600. This one’s a 2015-reg with 7000 miles and the First Class cabin option. New, it’ll have cost £180k. Can’t stretch to a good 205 GTi? Try this underrated alternative. The 106 GTi was one of the best front-drive cars of its day. The 1.6 engine makes 120bhp, decent enough in a 950kg car. This one’s a 2000-reg with 66,000 miles and recent service. Auction watch The sales brochure describes this 1989-registered Pony as a modern classic, and why not? After all, it dates from Hyundai’s first years in the UK (the brand set up shop in 1982) and, thanks to the talents of the British engineering team behind it, Italdesign’s styling and its Mitsubishi powertrain, the model helped to establish the brand here for good. Its encouraging reception would give the green light to fellow South Korean car maker Kia, the pair of them helping to raise standards of quality and reliability across all car makers. This mint 7000-mile example made £1450. Future classic When news broke that the Jimny was being replaced by an all-new model, prices for the outgoing car firmed and even increased. Two years later, you’ll still pay £14,999 for a low-mileage old-model 2018/67-reg SZ4 compared with £15,999 for an all-new one. Meanwhile, prices of older but clean Jimnys are holding up well. In fact, such is the level of interest in the model that there are dealers who trade in nothing else. Clash of the classifieds Brief: Find a fabulous and fun £5k city car. Fiat Panda 100hp, £3750 Fiat 500, £4950 Max Adams: This might be the number one or number two motoring cliché, but if you want a city car, you really must go Italian. And perhaps the finest, most fun city car they’ve ever made is the Fiat Panda 100HP – the perfect big(ish) engine in a tiny town tot combo. Mark Pearson: I agree about the Italian bit, Max, but not the car. The city car that is easily the most delightful is the Nuova 500, a rear-engined masterpiece that’s the size of a Twix but can seat four, and nothing is as agile or as much fun in a city. This wonderfully collectable 1971 beauty I found is a bargain at under £5000. MA: It might be fun once, but then the impracticality and lack of reliability of an old Italian ‘collectable beauty’ will drive you nuts. My modern, 2008 Panda will prove more durable and, therefore, you can enjoy the tenacious handling of the 100HP to your heart’s content. And it’s got five times the power. MP: It’s not about power, Max. It’s about charm, and my car’s legendary ability to run rings round Rome’s troublesome traffic sees off your hard-riding Panda, I’m afraid. MA: Have you seen how fast they drive in Rome? I don’t think you’d survive in

The Toyota C-HR finally looks a little less wild for 2020
Toyota has refreshed the C-HR for the 2020 model year, and, joy of joys, its decided to make the styling less, uh, controversial, even if only slightly.Around the rear, the styling hasnt changed much or really at all. However, it was never the rear that we had a problem with, it was always the front.Mercifully, the face has become a little more conventional and even bears a slight resemblance to the Corolla Hatchback, which we think looks quite good. The front of the vehicle also gains adaptive LED headlights on Limited trims. New wheel designs are available in 17 and 18 inches, and there are a few new colour options to go along with the two-tone combinations. Also long overdue at Toyota is the inclusion of Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatibility as standard features. An eight-way adjustable power drivers seat is now available on Limited trims as well.A modern car mid-cycle update isnt complete without the addition of the latest safety tech, and the 2020 C-HR is no different (despite its looks). Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection, Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist, Automatic High Beams, and Full-Speed Range Dynamic Radar Cruise Control all come standard.XLE trims add Blind Spot Monitor with Rear Cross Traffic Alert, and Limited trim models come with Emergency Assistance Button, Enhanced Roadside Assistance and Stolen Vehicle Locator.Canadian pricing has not been announced, but we expect it to be a little more expensive than the outgoing model year, due to its much more handsome appearance and wealth of

Trudeau, Scheer offer no hope of free passage to, from P.E.I. via Confederation Bridge
The Confederation Bridge connects New Brunswick to Prince Edward Island. Can Stock Photo A Prince Edward Island senator is attempting to drum up support for no-charge use of the Confederation Bridge, but it doesnt appear as though he will have any luck getting the next prime minister on board.Senator Percy Downe, a long-time back-room Liberal who has served as a senator since 2003, is the Islands major proponent of reducing or eliminating the $47.75 bridge toll.Charged only when departing Prince Edward Island, the toll has steadily increased from $35.00 when the Confederation Bridge opened in 1997.Yet when asked by reporters during the election campaign whether Islanders could expect to receive a break in their transportation costs, two primary federal party leaders were decidedly non-committal.I understand that the toll is an impact on families here, Conservative Party leader Andrew Scheer said during a campaign stop in Canoe Cove, P.E.I. We are hearing that feedback and we will have more to say on affordability measures throughout the rest of this campaign.Scheers response came a few days after Liberal Party leader Justin Trudeau visited P.E.I. Trudeau took no questions while on the Island, but told reporters earlier that day The Samuel de Champlain Bridge was a replacement bridge. The Confederation Bridge was a new bridge that was built with the tolls as part of the financing. The prime ministers mention of Montreals Samuel de Champlain bridge brings up one of Senator Downes two primary arguments. Champlain Bridge in Montreal, also owned by the government of Canada, Downe wrote in The Financial Post in February 2019, is nearing completion with not a toll booth in sight, because during the 2015 federal election campaign, Justin Trudeau committed to cancelling its toll. The senators other argument: Justin Trudeaus statement in January 2017 that the government will look at what can be done to make sure that people are able to travel freely, travel efficiently, and openly across this country at modest costs.Of course, there are bridges with and without tolls all across the country. This is nothing new. Moreover, beyond the huge cost the government would incur to eliminate or slash the Confederation Bridges fare, theres another issue: the federal government doesnt operate the Confederation Bridge.Strait Crossing holds a 35-year lease through 2032, which involves maintaining the 13-kilometre span as well as collecting all tolls. Meanwhile, Islanders at the eastern end of P.E.I. who rely on both the $79.00 ferry between Wood Islands and Caribou, Nova Scotia and the tourists that boat delivers are unlikely to stand for free passage at the other end of P.E.I.Incidentally, over its 22 years of operation, the Confederation Bridge toll hasnt risen as fast as the rate of inflation. According to the Bank of Canadas inflation calculator, $35.00 in 1997 equals $52.85 in 2019, meaning the crossing is actually more affordable now than it was when the crossings construction was

Marco Signoretti wins 2019 Nissan Micra Cup championship
2019 Nissan Micra Cup champion Macro Signoretti, right, with Nissan Canada president Steve Milette following the title-deciding race last Saturday in Quebec.Nissan Canada CIRCUIT MONT-TREMBLANT, Quebec Rookie Marco Signoretti took a bit of the drama out of the 2019 Nissan Micra Cup championship by securing the title on the first day of the season-ending double-header last weekend here in the Laurentian Mountains. The Toronto driver became the first Ontario-based driver and the first rookie to win the title in the five years the Micra Cup has been contested, a series in which drivers compete in identically speced Micra Ss.In Saturdays race in wet conditions, Signoretti started from pole but drove a conservative race, his goal to finish ahead of his sole title challenger, Kevin King, rather than win the race. The PayPal/Motorsports In Action Team driver placed fifth to Kings eight-place result, giving him enough points to seal the drivers championship. I thought back at my 12 years of experience in karting and the errors I sometimes made, Signoretti said following Saturdays race. I then managed my race the best I could knowing that the ultimate goal was to claim the title. Im very ecstatic to have won the Nissan Micra Cup in my rookie season. With Signoretti trying to keep his nose clean while navigating the slippery Circuit Mont-Tremblant, a great battle at the front saw Valrie Limoges (H.Grgoire Nissan), Jake Exton (Clarington Nissan) and Gavin Sanders vie for victory. At the checkered flag, Limoges won by less than six-tenths of a second ahead of Sanders, with Exton third. It was Limoges third win in the series.Sundays season-ending race was run under sunny skies, and with the pressure of the title fight off, Signoretti put an exclamation mark on his remarkable rookie season by winning the race, followed by Exton and Austin Riley, the young autistic driver whose third place finish rounded out an exceptional season.A notable footnote to the race was pole-sitter Ben Cooper, a triple world karting champion originally from Great Britain and currently residing in Mont-Tremblant. During the first few laps six drivers were going wheel-to-wheel for the lead, which resulted in Cooper, whose first-ever Micra Cup race was a day earlier, ending his day early following contact with Sanders and King.Sylvain Ouellets sixth place, combined with Frdric Berniers retirement after a contact with Limoges, gave Ouellet the Senior Class title. Both drivers were tied with the number of points but Ouellet was the holder of seven victories against Berniers three. In the final overall standings, Signoretti is the champion ahead of King, Limoges, Exton, Taylor Near, Riley, Ouellet, Bernier, Nicolas Barrette, and ric Chaput. At least 37 drivers took part in the 2019 Nissan Micra Cup season. The weekends two races can be watched on the series Facebook page and on Micra Cup TV on YouTube. The sixth season of the Nissan Micra Cup will begin in May

The best and worst James Bond car gadgets of all time
A woman poses with Wet Nellie from the James Bond film The Spy Who Loved Me at the press preview for the exhibition Bond in Motion at the London Film Museum in central London on March 18, 2014.Leon Neal / Getty Images Roger Moore or Sean Connery? Daniel Craig or Pierce Brosnan? The Aston Martin Vanquish or the Lotus Esprit? There are many great debates to be had about all sorts of details within the James Bond film franchise. We’ve already sussed out and listed the best cars driven by Bond’s various nemeses over the years, but today we’re taking a look at the extra hardware in and on the cars assigned to Agent 007. The purpose of Bond’s automotive gadgets is to save him from peril while he’s on the road, yes, but also to entertain movie-goers. Sometimes producers, along with Q and the brains in his division, nail it on both fronts, providing unnecessarily complex and unrealistic yet totally awesome features like amphibious capabilities or hub-mounted laser beams for 007’s various cars. And other times their contraptions and add-ons miss the mark and prove either too ridiculous or not ridiculous enough. Here are a few of our most and least favourite Bond car modifications. Let us know your top and bottom picks in the comments below. Best: Aston Martin V8 Vantage Volante with Laser BeamsThe Aston Martin DB5 that debuted in Goldfinger (1964) and went on to be featured in a bunch of other films might be the most recognizable of Bond’s rides, with a host of now-de-rigeur features including machine guns, a bullet screen and the classic hub-mounted tire shredders. But it’s the innovation of the wheel-centric technology featured in the Vantage Volante in The Living Daylights, along with Timothy Dalton’s epic one-liner delivery, that sells it as one of the best inventions ever. Lasers, baby! When Bond activates the hub-mounted lasers to sever the pursuing authorities’ car’s cabin from its chassis, he wryly blames it on salt corrosion. Worst: 1980 Lotus Turbo Esprit with Self-destruct SequenceThe first of two 1980 Lotus Turbo Esprits that 007 drives in For Your Eyes Only (1981) was only given one modification by the Q Division. An anti-theft self-destruct device was installed consisting of a bunch of C4 strapped to the sides of the car. Sure, that anonymous henchman didn’t get to steal the ¾-full pack of gum, spare change and sensitive government data from the centre console (or go home to his wife and six young children) but what if one of the gas lines leaked and caused a fire, or there was a collision at a three-way stop while Bond was in the car? They really didn’t think this one through. Best: Aston Martin Vanquish with Ejector SeatPierce Brosnan’s Bond demonstrated how some double-oh-add-ons can be used in more ways than one when he hit the ‘Ejector Seat’ button to pirouette his upside-down Aston Martin Vanquish around a missile and back onto its wheels during the ice chase scene in Die Another Day (2002). And somehow, not a hair out of place. Pierce, you are a magnificent creature. Worst: Aston Martin DB10 with Rear-facing FlamethrowerLook, I understand that an any-which-way-facing flamethrower is inherently kick-ass, but this simply would not be effective as a means of defence. As a means of getting that A-hole off your tailgate, sure – and that’s essentially what Daniel Craig’s Bond did in the 2015 film Spectre – but otherwise pursuers with any sort of stop-start traffic driving skill or even just active cruise control could just hang back behind the hottest point of the flame and roast weenies. Best: 1976 Lotus Esprit with Submarine Function (‘Wet Nellie’) A woman poses with “Wet Nellie” from the James Bond film “The Spy Who Loved Me” at the press preview for the exhibition “Bond in Motion” at the London Film Museum in central London on March 18, 2014. Leon Neal / Getty Images The Lotus Esprit got a decent boost early on in its reign, which lasted from 1976 to 2004, thanks to one of the coolest Bond cars of all time, an amphibious automobile dubbed Wet Nellie. In The Spy Who Loved Me (1977), Roger Moore’s Bond drives the seemingly normal white coupe off the end of a dock, revealing its full potential underwater by blowing up a helicopter with some subsurface-to-air missiles and floating around with Barbara Bach in the passenger seat. In reality, it was an ex-U.S.-Navy-SEAL operating a submarine wearing the body shell of an Esprit S1 underwater. Today, the submarine Wet Nellie from the film is owned by Elon Musk, who claims to have plans to convert it to a functioning amphibious submersible vehicle.Worst: Aston Martin DBS V12 with DefibrillatorThe producers of the 2006 movie Casino Royale must have been feeling extra playful when they chose the gadgets for the Aston Martin DBS V12: a Walther PPK (basically a keychain for Bond) and a field medical kit including a defibrillator.Points for practicality, but not creativity. But as luck would have it, that’s exactly what the spy would need to keep his
