A Tesla Model S police cruiser ran out of battery in the middle of a high-speed pursuit, the Fremont, California police department has confirmed.Fremont officer Jesse Hartman radioed in that he was chasing down a felony vehicle but that his Model S cop car showed just six miles (10 km) of range before the battery would be empty, reports The Mercury News.Hartman asked his dispatch to have another unit take over as pursuit lead after suggesting I may lose it here in a second; other gas-powered cars picked up the chase only to drop it shortly after due to the suspects driving getting way too reckless. The Tesla, meanwhile, had to recharge in San Jose before heading back to the station. The department told Roadshow its unclear why the Tesla wasnt charged that particular day, and noted the car had been through roughly two full shifts when the chase commenced at 11 p.m. on September 20. Though this was only the EV police cars second pursuit, a representative for Fremont PD said it performed well, and that theyre overall thrilled with the Tesla as a cruiser.Even gas-powered police cars have run out of fuel on the job, the representative noted, and other units were able to pick up this particular chase anyway before terminating it.While the car usually comes back with 40 per cent or 50 per cent of its battery range remaining, perhaps this will work as a lesson to remind them to always top it off at the end of every

Hyundai’s upcoming pickup will have a ladder frame, confirms exec
According to Hyundai, the Santa Cruz was not designed to be an alternative to a truck. The rumour mill continues to churn over Hyundais forthcoming pickup, a product that has seemingly been in gestation longer than a baby elephant.Recent scuttlebutt had the maybe-it-will, maybe-it-wont vehicle being built on a unibody platform think Santa Fe or Palisade with a bed instead of a cargo area and youd be on the right track. Now, however, it seems likely the Hyundai pickup will be built on a ladder-frame chassis. According to an interview with Aussie automotive site Which Car, development costs of a new separate frame will be shared with Kia, meaning theres every chance that brand will get a version of the truck as well.Whats clear to us is that if were going to bring a ute out, it had better be a ute, said John Kett, Hyundai Australia CEO, before setting off for the Outback to wrestle a gooly-gooly snake with his bare hands. Were going down that pathway and were working towards it. We just have to make sure that when it arrives, its a bloody ute.Clear as the water at Surfers Paradise, eh, mate? Kett went on to tell the Aussie gearheads the company is looking at a range of models, including two- and four-wheel-drive models and a possible array of cab configurations. Introducing anything other than a four-door Crew Cab would be a waste of time in this and many other countries, so, if a Hyundai pickup does materialize, expect it to launch in that body style.Another wrench in the works? Just because a company is selling a vehicle Down Under doesnt necessarily mean itll make it to this side of the pond. For proof of that in this very segment, one need look no further than Ford, a company which inexplicably refuses to sell the mighty Ranger Raptor in this country despite a favourable climate for doing so.Earlier this year, top brass at Hyundais U.S. unit spoke about the pickup truck in interviews, saying it would be very versatile and create a whole new class of buyers. Whatever form the truck takes, theres a good chance it will be manufactured in North America, thanks to the so-called Chicken Tax that levies stiff tariffs on imported pickup

Mazda confirms Tokyo show debut for first electric car
Mazda has confirmed that its first electric car will be revealed at Tokyo motor show on 23 October. The model, previewed by the e-TPV prototype, is expected to adopt an SUV bodystyle, which can more easily accommodate an underfloor battery pack. It will use a similar set-up to the prototype, which has a 35.5kWh battery and a single electric motor delivering 138bhp and 195lb ft of torque to the the front wheels via a single-speed transmission. The EV is likely to have a range between 120 and 150 miles, similar to the new Mini Electric but significantly less than more obvious rivals, such as the 279-mile Hyundai Kona Electric. It will be able to accept 6.6kW domestic charging and 50kW public rapid charging. Mazda will also introduce a modern version of its famed rotary engine in a range-extender variant of the EV. Two years ago, Mazda boss Mitsuo Hitomi confirmed that, rather than being used in its purest form, a rotary engine will be used as an EV range-extender. He said: “The rotary engine isn’t particularly efficient to use as a range-extender, but when we turn on a rotary, it’s much, much quieter compared to other manufacturers’ range-extenders”. The Japanese firm’s range hasn’t featured a rotary-engined road car since the RX-8 went out of production in 2012, but it did produce a rotary range-extender Mazda 2 prototype – which Autocar drove – back in 2013. It has remained interested in reintroducing the technology to production since. The Mazda RX-Vision Concept, which was shown at the Tokyo motor show in 2015, used such a powertrain. Mazda has eschewed hybrid and electric models in recent years, instead choosing to focus on improving the efficiency of its petrol engines. This year, it introduced spark plug-controlled compression ignition to the latest Mazda 3, with the promise that it will “combine the economy and torque of a diesel engine with the performance and lower emissions of a petrol

Micra Cup: The little race series that could
The masterminds behind the Micra Cup: series founder/promoter Jacques Deshaies and Nissan Canadas Didier Marsaud.Andrew McCredie BOWMANVILLE, Ontario In 2014, Nissan Canada had the daunting task of reintroducing the Micra after a two decade-plus absence. That fourth-generation model was already four years old when it arrived here that year, and its most notable feature was its price: with a base model under $10,000 it was the least expensive new vehicle in Canada. Viewed another way, the cheapest.Needless to say, positioning the Mexican-built, 1.6-litre four-door sedan would be a challenge for Nissan Canada execs like Didier Marsaud. That is until Quebec journalist Jacques Deshaies came calling with a crazy idea.Five years later at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park and on the eve of the 62nd race in the Nissan Micra Cup, the two men reflected on the wild ride of establishing a racing series that has become part of the Canadian racing ladder system. We created the Micra Cup because we were bringing back a model to Canada that had not been here for 23 years with a name that most people did not know or remember, explained Marsaud, Nissan Canadas director of corporate communications. And as it was the least expensive car in the Canadian market, we wanted to demonstrate that this car is fun, reliable and works. The exclusive-to-Canada series features six race weekends in Ontario and Quebec between May and September, with drivers competing in 109-horsepower Nissan Micra base model S cars that are equipped identically. The appeal to drivers is two-fold: as a true spec style series what separates winners from losers is the driver, not the car; and for about $30,000 you can compete in the entire series. Plus, unlike so many feeder series, the Micra Cup gets exposure on TV and social media. For the first time at Circuit Mont-Tremblant, the two races this weekend will be aired live on the series Facebook page (Coupe Nissan Micra Cup) and on its YouTube channel, Micra Cup TV.Goals set, and achievedFor Deshaieswho has owned a race team, driven race cars and served as president of the 2004 Trois-Rivieres Grand Prixhis goal when he pitched the idea to Marsaud, and eventually then-Nissan Canada president Christian Meunier, was at the five-year mark to try and convince the young drivers in karting that their next step up the racing ladder is Micra Cup.Looking at the current grid, and noting that he signed up two young karters for next season just a day earlier, the affable Quebecer said he has achieved that goal. In fact, this weekends season finale double-header at Circuit Mont-Tremblant sees rookie Marco Signoretti, a former karting, battling series veteran Kevin King, a karting instructor, for the overall drivers championship.Likewise, Marsaud said he and Nissan had achieved their goal. And that was to raise awareness about the Micra.I love motorsport and a lot of people in Nissan Canada love motorsport, but our job is not to do motorsport, he said. Our job is to sell cars.Canadian-made grassrootsThe success of the Micra Cup hasnt gone unnoticed by others in the company, notably Nissan Global Motorsport Director Michael Carcamo. When Didier brought us the concept, we were over the moon, he told me in the Nissan pits at the Brooklyn Formula E race in August. It was really going back to the grassroots, an opportunity to give people something that we dont think is very common today. And thats an accessible racing platform. And making it a one-series highlights on one side the fact that we can produce a reliable and great racecar at a low cost. And at the same time the drivers get to be the stars of winning the race. And as Deshaies notes, when a manufacturer invests in a race series with one or two cars, sometimes they win, but most likely they dont. In the Micra Cup, each race the podium is three Nissans.Drivers’ thumbs upRacer Kevin King missed the opening race of the first season, but has competed in every race since, and he said that what has impressed him the most about the Micra Cupapart from the intense on-track competitionis how Nissan has supported the series. When the program started there was lots of talk about a lot of PR, and that Nissan (Canada) was going all in, the Trois-Rivieres native said. Throughout the years you have seen they are putting in a lot of effort, and I know all the drivers really appreciate that. Valrie Limoges has also been driving in the series since that first season, and she echoes Kings sentiment about the quality of the competition, adding she loves the fact that its a driver-focused series. There are some things drivers and crews can do on the set up of the cartire pressures and suchbut its mostly the driver, she said. I have learned that I am really, really competitive in my mind and that I really love racing. I have more expectations that will hopefully lead to something good in the future.Western alienationAs to any regrets, Deshaies said his only one is not being

So long as you’re not spending your last penny, a used Jaguar XK8 for less than £5000 could be fun. Agreed, a rotten subframe, a sagging headlining, galvanic corrosion where steel and alloy come into close contact, worn suspension and worn bores on pre-2000-model-year cars could wipe the smile off your face but we’re here to celebrate the old Jag, not kick it. Jaguar XK8 4.0 Coupé, £4995: There’s much to celebrate, too. Back in the day, Autocar ran a standard 290bhp 4.0 auto coupé and everyone who tried it loved it. Silver and especially black are the best colours but bright blue also looks good. Unfortunately, our find is in British Racing Green, a colour that doesn’t suit the large XK8, with its executive pretensions. On the upside, it has done only 67,000 miles and has full service history. (It has been serviced every year of its life by a mix of main dealers and reputable specialists.) The private seller appears to be of the fussy persuasion, too, because he has dug deep for a new headlining and even a new alternator, which he describes as a “precautionary measure”. We like that. We also like the fact that he says it has been “well loved and looked after”. Of course, we could be reading too much into those sweet words. At the end of the day, it’s only £5000 and an early model at that where later cars got improved steering, styling tweaks and xenon lights. Money no object? Not an XKR but a nice 300bhp XK8 4.2 S with heated seats and 19in alloy wheels. It was launched in 2005 as a last hurrah and today prices start at about £9000 for a 2005-reg coupé with 90,000 miles. Not just any Yeti but the 2014 Tour de France special that had waterproof seat covers, bike wheel bags and cycle carriers. First owners also got a Rouleur Tour de France centenary book worth £250. It’ll be a miracle if there’s one in this 93,000-mile car. Not as highly prized as the hatch but prices for the best are getting there. This is a tidy 1986-reg car that has done 109,000 miles but it has no rust or mechanical issues. It has matching white alloys, hood and leather trim, so you’ll need to wear your sunglasses. White suits the 924 and is what drew us to this 1984 car with 117,000 miles. It has stacks of history and has had up to £4000 lavished on it in new parts in recent years. The body has some light rust that could be worth fixing with an eye on its future value. Daihatsu Copen, £1195: Daihatsu used to spring the odd surprise, such as the dinky Copen convertible of 2003. It was powered by a 67bhp 660cc turbo three-pot. Copens are well built, reliable and well equipped and, as this 2004-reg with 64,000 miles proves, good value. Auction watch It’s neither as pretty as the 205 nor as popular, which is why, for years, the 309 GTi was such a bargain, at least if you could find one. Many were broken for spares to keep 205s on the road. It’s arguably better to drive than the 205 (something to do with it having a stiffer shell). This 1990 example, a 15,000-mile Phase 2 model, passed through auction a month or so ago when it made a solid £12,432, an oddly precise figure. The last owner had had it for 29 years. How he kept himself from driving it is beyond us. Future classic No prizes for tipping this one as a future classic. The Cube is already a sought-after motor by those who like running around in something inspired by a 1950s refrigerator. The reason for pointing it up now is that they’re still good value for money. However, the market is dominated by Japanese imports. Instead, we reckon a rare UK car is the way to go and duly found a mint 2010-reg 1.6 with 42,000 miles and full Nissan service history for £4990. Finished in black, it looks like a taxi that has been shunted up the back, but we’ll live with that. Clash of the classifieds Brief: Car spotters’ special – something for £4000 that’s rare, innovative or interesting – or a bit of all three. Midas Gold, £3995 Mark Pearson: Johnno wanted a rarity and an innovative design and, baby, here it is: a Midas Gold from 1989. It’s a Mini Metro but thankfully not as we know them. Instead, this marked-up Mini Marcos was tweaked by Midas and received further input from the great Gordon Murray – and he’s very tall and notably South African, so I wouldn’t argue with him. Wind-in-the-hair fun and a collectable classic. What the hell have you chosen? Max Adams: I, Mark, have also gone for something rare and innovative, but ultimately far cheaper: a Citroën C3 Pluriel in Charleston form to celebrate 60 years of the 2CV. At its height, there were 46 of these on our roads, making this coupé/convertible/pick-up a very rare beast indeed. MP: I’m not surprised. It’s hideous. Is that the thing with the roof that doesn’t work? MA: Initially, it didn’t, but by the time this 2009 one was built, they’d ironed out the kinks. Anyway, those in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones. I don’t suppose yours is much better? MP: Mine has poise,

Bizarre video shows Toronto-area motorcyclist being attacked by turkey
Thanksgiving is just around the corner, and while most people havent even cracked open the cranberry sauce yet, one motorcyclist is getting a taste of turkey a little early. This one wasnt on a plate, though, it was in the middle of the road. And rabidly attacking him just because.According to BlogTO, the incident happened in Whitby, Ontario, about an hour away from Toronto, and involved a motorcycle rider who bit off a little more than he could chew when a rogue turkey attacked him at an intersection. The altercation was captured on video from the vehicle behind him in traffic. The driver who captured the footage describes what happens in the moments leading up to the attack; they say they saw the bird standing in the middle of the intersection of Thickson and Wentworth.Unsure of what to do, I moved my car slightly to the left and waited to see if hed move before the light changed. A motorcycle then passed me and passed the turkey and then the turkey charged at him. The turkey circled his motorcycle about three times before going in for the attack. The turkey launches itself at the rider, which takes him off guard. The biker manages to keep the bird at bay by blocking with his boot. Its possible that the attack was part of a personal vendetta against humans for the brothers the turkeys lost in the past, or a battle in a turf war between itself and what it can only perceive as a huge black bird.Whether or not the delinquent turkey will end up covered in bacon and stuffed with bread crumbs remains to be seen, but perhaps well prepare a vegan dinner this October, just to be

Newfoundland man who sold the first-ever Ford Mustang will finally see it again
The first preproduction Mustang, with serial number 1. FORD MOTOR COMPANYFord A retired car salesman in Newfoundland who accidentally sold the first Ford Mustang ever built will be reunited with it this coming weekend. As reported by CTV News, Harry Phillips will be a special guest at the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn, Michigan after his granddaughter started a Send Harry to Henry social media campaign.Prior to the Mustang actually going on sale, Ford sent pre-production models to its dealers, intended strictly for display. In order for all showrooms to have one for the official sales launch on April 17, 1964, the earliest cars built went to the dealerships that were farthest away. George G.R. Parsons Ford in St. Johns, where Phillips worked, got the very first one, a white convertible with serial number 5F08F100001.Captain Stanley Tucker, an airline pilot, saw it and immediately wanted it. He paid $4,300 for it, Phillips said, sealing the deal three days before the launch but agreeing to let the dealership display the car for a while. The whole thing was a mistake. The car, a pre-production model, wasnt meant for sale and was supposed to be returned to the automaker. When it didnt come back, Ford went looking for it.It took two years of negotiation before Tucker agreed to relinquish it, accepting in trade a fully-loaded 1966 Mustang that was the millionth one built. The car went on display at the Henry Ford Museum in 1984. Tucker died in 2008.Canada also got the second one built, a hardtop (pictured above) that went to a dealer in Yukon. That car sold at auction in January 2019 for US$192,500. Only one other pre-production model is known to exist. The first production Mustang intended for sale went to Gail Wise, a schoolteacher in Chicago, who still owns it.Phillips has never visited the Henry Ford Museum, and it will be the first time hes seen the car since he sold it 55 years ago. Museum officials have planned a VIP day for him, including a tour of the Rouge factory where the car was

First Drive: 2020 Kia Forte5 and Forte GT
2020 Kia Forte GT SedanJil McIntosh VICTORIA, B.C. Theres a snaky stretch of mountain road ahead of me, all quick turns and switchbacks, but my car is keeping up with it. It hugs in tight to the curves, its flat and well-balanced around the corners, and its fun. And its a Kia Forte.Yes, you read that right. After morphing the Forte into its third generation for 2019, Kia now adds a turbocharged GT version, as well as the return of the Forte5 four-door hatchback, last seen in 2018. That one is ours alone: in the hatchback-hostile U.S., where buyers wont look at a liftgate that isnt attached to an SUV, Kia only sells the Forte as a sedan. At this launch, I drove the GT in sedan form, and the Forte5 in the lower-powered version, but a Forte5 GT will be landing in showrooms in a few weeks. The hatchback carried this turbocharged engine before, when it was known as the Forte5 SX. This time around, it gets larger brakes, and a multi-link rear suspension in place of a torsion beam. The Forte shares its underpinnings and driveline with sister company Hyundai’s Elantra, and as luck would have it, I drove that version the week prior. It seems the two automakers are divvying up their offerings, and the Elantra is more about a smooth and comfortable ride. The Forte sharpens with a sportier feel, even in its 2.0-litre version, while the GT adds a sport-tuned suspension on top of that.In both sedan and hatchback, all non-GT trim levels use a 2.0-litre four-cylinder that makes 147 horsepower and 132 lb.-ft. of torque. The base LX sedan can be ordered with a six-speed manual. Everything else mates that engine to an automatic CVT, designed and build in-house, that Kia prefers to call an IVT, for intelligent variable transmission. The sedan comes in six trim levels, starting at $17,695 for the LX, and topping out at $26,995 for the EX Limited. The Forte5 comes only in EX trim and is $22,245. The GT steps up the pace with a turbocharged 1.6-litre four-cylinder that runs on regular-grade gas, and churns out 201 horsepower and 195 lb.-ft. of torque. Its hooked to an automatic seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, and like the 2.0-litre, drives the front wheels. In sedan form, the GT is a single trim level at $28,995. The Forte5 GT starts at $27,395, but can be upgraded to Limited trim for $29,995.In the sedan, the six-speed manual is primarily there in order to advertise a lower price point. Its a different story when horsepower plus a stick equals more driving fun, and while the current Forte GT is automatic-only, a Kia rep said that adding a manual transmission is under consideration.Theres virtually no turbo lag to the 1.6-litre, and the dual-clutch transmission is a good fit, with quick but very smooth shifts that always keep it in the sweet spot. These units can occasionally stumble on downshifts, but I never felt any during my morning drive. The steering has good weight to it, and the car responds quickly to input just what you want when the road gets bendy. The engines growl is actually some electronically-generated noise thats added in, but it still sounds fine. I switched to the 2.0-litre Forte5 in the afternoon. The engines power numbers might not sound all that impressive on paper, but its all about seat-of-the-pants: it feels smooth and with enough grunt to get the job done. Kia held out with conventional transmissions long after many competitors went to CVTs, and it was worth the wait. This gearless unit uses a chain instead of a belt, and its equipped with eight artificial shift points. If you werent told it was a CVT, you probably wouldnt realize it, because it feels more like something with conventional gears. The big deal is fuel economy: while the previous 2.0-litre with six-speed automatic rated 8.3 L/100 km in city/highway driving, the new Forte manages 7.1 L/100 km.While interior styling is the same on all models, the GT sedan spiffs up with very comfortable sport seats, clad in fake cowhide with contrasting stitching; flat-bottomed heated steering wheel; and paddle shifters for sequentially rowing through the CVTs shift points. Features borrowed from some of the other trim lines include premium stereo, navigation, wireless charging, heated rear seats, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, blind spot monitoring, and lane-keep assist.Im always a fan of simple controls distraction should be minimal when driving and Kia delivers on that. There are buttons and dials for the climate control, and hard buttons to access menus in the intuitive centre touchscreen. If theres any real issue to the Fortes success, its that its a very good car in a segment that contains a lot of very good cars. It does just about everything right, but without an extra shot of spectacular to knock it to the top of the pack. For many buyers, itll be all about value: the Forte5 EX packs in more features than most competitors for less money. The fact that its fun to drive is one more cherry on

Aston Martin teases us again, this time with the DBX’s soundtrack
My God, you know this whole tease-you-new-hot-rod has reached new levels of silliness when you put out a press missive detailing a Youtube video consisting of nothing more than the revving of an engine. I love the sound of pistons compressing more than most, but surely there are better uses for Amazon server space than 30 seconds of frenetic internal combustion. That said, I have to admit that, despite the long, drawn-out nature of Aston Martins news-making foreplay, I am intrigued by the companys new DBX. For the companys first SUV, the good folks from Gaydon are making some outlandish claims for the so-far-disguised as in camouflaged photos sport brute. For instance, in no particular order, they are saying that DBX can corner as hard as its seriously-fast Vantage, brake harder than the companys DBS Superleggera and that its engine the Mercedes-sourced, Aston-tuned twin-turbo 4.0-litre V8, pumps out 550 PS (about 542 SAE horsepower), more than any of its V8-powered coupes and roadsters. If true and, my Lord, they did release a Youtube sound video as proof the DBX may be just the Urus-chasing SUV Aston needs to keep up with rapidly-growing Lamborghini sales.Officially, though this is still the reveal of the DBXs exhaust system, which, in official parlance, has been tuned to reflect a deep bass with increasing mid-tones, creating true auditory exhilaration. I will leave it your fine ears as to whether Aston has indeed created the broader, more solid acoustic note they were

Bentley Bentayga Hybrid goes on sale in UK
The Bentley Bentayga Hybrid, the firm’s first electrified production vehicle, is now on sale in Europe and the UK, priced from £133,100. First revealed at the Geneva motor show in March 2018, order books for the plug-in hybrid SUV were due to open later that year. However, the launch was significantly delayed in the European market as a result of WLTP emissions certification. A Bentley spokesman said the setback was “due to WLTP certification, with business priority placed on getting the (new) Continental GT and GT Convertible on sale in as many markets as possible”. Customer deliveries of the Bentayga Hybrid are now set to get underway before the end of this year. The luxury plug-in hybrid is capable of up to 24.2 miles of electric-only range on the WLTP combined cycle. It couples a 126bhp, 295lb ft electric motor with a turbocharged 3.0-litre V6 petrol engine for a 0-62mph time of 5.5sec and top speed of 158mph. Total power output is unconfirmed, but it can be expected to match the 455bhp of the powertrain-sharing Porsche Cayenne E-Hybrid, while torque is rated at 516lb ft. Unique to the Bentayga Hybrid is a range of new sat-nav features that automatically calculate the “optimum combination of electric motor and engine” according to the planned journey. Three driving modes – EV, Hybrid and Hold – offer varying balances of electric and engine power, with regenerative braking working to recover energy at all times. The SUV is capable of 80.7mpg on the WLTP cycle, with CO2 emissions rated at 79g/km. Bentley claims the battery can be fully charged from empty in two and a half hours. The Bentayga Hybrid is Bentley’s first step into electrification and precedes an electrified version of the firm’s new Flying Spur luxury saloon that’s set to arrive in 2020. Plans for an electric sports car have been shelved, however, with boss Adrian Hallmark telling Autocar at the Goodwood Festival of Speed: “We are wrestling with multiple dimensions, and it is my belief – and it is an informed estimate, not a defined goal – that we will have the capability of building a car with the high performance and high range capabilities that our customers expect by around
