First Drive: 2020 Subaru Legacy

Vernon, B.C. For a company that used to embrace weirdness SVX, XT, BRAT, Baja, anyone? Subaru has spent much of the 21st century becoming decidedly conventional. Not that going mainstream has done the manufacturer any harm; its sales growth, at least in North America, has outpaced most of its rivals. Still, when it comes to its cars, Subaru is turning into a Japanese version of what Volvo used to be, (with the exception of the street hoodlum WRX STI versions); safe, long lasting and kind of plain.Which brings us to the new Legacy, a genuinely affordable, honest, mid-sized, all-wheel-drive, four-door family sedan seemingly a perfect fit for a Canadian audience. Yes, those are a lot of qualifiers, but for those tired of seeing crossovers of various types and sizes in every driveway the 2020 Legacy delivers the goods with pretty much the same four-season capability as the higher-riding soft-roaders. In fact, the tag line for the new models launch is the SUV of sedans. And, for the enthusiasts out there who prefer a little more zip in their daily commutes, good news: The seventh-generation sedan sees the return of the turbocharged GT models, offering a sportier and more engaging driving experience. The turbocharged 2.4-litre boxer four-cylinder, first introduced in the Ascent crossover, pumps out a solid 260 horsepower and 277 pound-feet of torque, a significant jump compared with the base models (Convenience, Touring, Limited and Premier) normally aspirated, 182-hp 2.5L four. Both engines are mated to a continuously variable transmission with eight discrete steps built in, so Subaru isnt building super-sport four-doors here. The new model might appear to be a subtle improvement over the previous generation, but there are a lot of subtle improvements, starting with small increases in length (up 38 millimetres) and wheelbase that result in increased room for occupants and a small uptick in cargo space. A base engine overhauled with 90 per cent new parts as well as direct injection and auto start/stop an all-new suspension, torque vectoring on all wheels, greater fuel efficiency, improved aerodynamics, more sound deadening, added content, tablet-style infotainment system, upgrades to the EyeSight safety system; the list goes on.As much as it would be a better test of Subarus vaunted full-time all-wheel-drive system to be driving in slippery, sloppy conditions, the Okanagan Valley was basked in summer-like heat and abundant sunshine. With the keys to a Limited model ($34,295) in our hand, we started the morning drive route north on Highway 97, hugging Okanagan Lake toward Vernon before dipsy-doodling onto various undulating back roads throughout the valley, including some gravel stretches to test out the effectiveness of the new Legacys additional sound deadening the car proved to be impressively quiet over the entire route, no matter the road surface. Equally deserving of praise is the sedans ride and handling. The car, whether powered by the 2.5 litre or the turbo 2.0L, offered up well-damped suspension while impressing with a sporty agility and a light touch to the steering on the twisty bits. Subaru puts its faith in the standard active torque vectoring for the cornering performance, as well as the cars highly rigid structure (the Subaru Global Platform underpinning the Legacy boasts an increase in the use of structural adhesive and ultra-high tensile-strength steel. In addition, torsional- and front-suspension rigidity has been improved by 70 per cent, and front lateral flexural- and rear-subframe rigidity increased 100 per cent compared to the previous Legacys platform). That might be a bit too tech-geeky for most people, but it speaks to the fact that this family four-door has some legit performance bona fides in the chassis dynamics department. If only the two engines offered were as impressive. OK, the news isnt horrible, just a little disappointing. The 2.5L boxer four is certainly smoother and quieter than the engine in the previous-generation Legacy, the caveat being that Subaru boxer motors have an inherent coarseness to them, especially on startup. The bigger issue is a lack of solid mid-range zip, the engine requiring a heavier foot on the gas pedal when it comes to passing power or on steeper, longer inclines.Jumping into a Limited GT version ($37,095) for the jaunt to Salmon Arm before pointing the car south highlighted what an additional 78 hp will bring to the table. The turbo-four spooled up quickly and gave the Legacy decidedly more urge when additional acceleration was required (zero to 100 km/h in just over six seconds). More noticeable with this engine, however, was that the CVT seemed to lag a bit when big throttle was applied. Looking inside, the Legacy cabin at least the tested Limited and Limited GT trims is striking in both content and execution. The most conspicuous improvement is the upgraded infotainment system, integrated into a vertically

Nearly-new buying guide: Mercedes-Benz S-Class

Before we get too carried away with how cheap some S-Class cars look (their prices start at around £15,000), consider that at launch in 2014, the very cheapest, the 350 CDI SE Line, cost £62,000 while the most expensive, the S63 AMG, was twice as much. Basically, behind its enticing price, your bargain S-Class still has the appetite of a much more expensive car.  That important caveat out of the way, we can get on with enjoying this most remarkable of vehicles, one that, now in its sixth generation, still sets the bar for luxury cars.  It was developed in long-wheelbase form first, a decision that speaks volumes about its intended market and high standards because it meant no compromises were made in its torsional rigidity, the secret to a good ride. A short-wheelbase version followed but it’s the long one that you want and that’s more plentiful on the used market.  Equally as plentiful are S350 CDI diesel versions because, let’s face it, the S-Class is an upmarket cab and a mid-power oil-burner is cheaper to run while providing the kind of waftability that executives believe is their due. A more powerful S400d arrived to partner it in 2018, but we’d plump for the 350 every time.  Meanwhile, if you like the idea of tearing up £50 notes under a shower of premium unleaded, there are the petrol-powered S500 and S600 models whose generous power outputs we needn’t worry about but which show up the S-Class’s remarkable agility. On that point, the V8 S63 and V12 S65 will leave you speechless.  New buyers seeking to reduce their tax burden were directed towards hybrid versions. Unfortunately, for private used car buyers, they only mean lower road tax, although plug-in versions such as the S500 do offer the possibility of up to 20 miles of electric-only running. Just don’t expect anything like the claimed economy figures.  At the start of the model’s life, you could choose from SE, SE Line and AMG Line trims, but given the model’s aspirations, top-spec AMG Line was the most popular. Features include 19in alloy wheels and a subtle bodykit, but all have a large TFT display, LED headlights and an array of driver assist features.  The model was facelifted in 2018 when, among other things, it received redesigned front and rear ends, more autonomous kit and two 12.3in displays. There were changes to the engines, too, while AMG Line, in Executive and Premium flavours, became the sole trim.  An all-new S-Class arrives next year. It won’t affect the prices of older models but, if you’re in the market for a nearly new one, do bear the new model in mind because, to make way for it, Mercedes is likely to sweeten the deals on the last of the current-shape cars. This will hurt the values of late-plate motors, making your nearly-new S-Class no longer the bargain it seemed. Need to know In 2018, the S350d moved from being powered by a 252bhp 3.0-litre V6 diesel to a 282bhp 2.9-litre straight six. It’s even quieter and more refined and a great motorway cruiser. It prompts the question: why shell out more to buy the 335bhp 400d?  It may be just about the best car in the world, but the S-Class’s reliability record is far from rosy. Malfunctioning airbags, seatbelts and gearboxes have all been recorded and the engines can suffer start/stop issues, turbocharger oil leaks and engine oil leaks associated with the cam chain tensioner.  Because of the presence of its battery, the S560e plug-in hybrid has less boot space than standard models: 400 litres compared with 510. Where fitted, the optional fridge accounts for 40 litres, too. Our pick All the tech and space you could wish for. Early models were also available in lower, SE trim but AMG Line was the big seller and prices start at just £22,000.  Wild card AMG S65: Wild is what this version’s all about thanks to its 621bhp V12 that outmuscles all of its rivals, including the Bentley Flying Spur. Prices start at £60,000. Top spec pick S600 L AMG Line: Not as powerful as the S65 but, otherwise, the 523bhp S600 wants for little in its specification. A 60,000-mile 2015-reg car with £20,000 of options costs £54,000. Ones we found 2014 S350 CDI L SE Line, 115,000 miles, £16,000  2015 S350 CDI AMG Line SWB, 70,000 miles, £25,000  2017 S350d L AMG Line, 30,000 miles, £37,000  2018 S500 AMG Line, 7000 miles,

Audi Sport expands hot SUV line-up with RS Q3 Sportback

Audi Sport has expanded its range of performance SUVs with the launch of the new RS Q3 Sportback coupe-crossover as its second high-performance SUV. It will take on the likes of the Mercedes-AMG GLA45 and BMW X4 M when it goes on sale early next year. The new machine is based on the recently launched Q3 Sportback, and shares the same underpinnings as the new second-generation RS Q3, which was unveiled as the same time. That includes a five-cylinder, 2.5-litre turbocharged  Along with the forthcoming RS Q8, it is part of a major expansion of Audi Sport’s SUV line-up designed to boost the performance division’s sales. Product manager Carolin Krause said that the RS Q3 Sportback was aimed at a “completely new segment, for young lifestyle-oriented customers, who want performance and everyday usability.” Krause said there were no concerns within Audi about the new RS Q3 Sportback cannibalising sales from the standard RS Q3, adding: “The market is ready for these models, especially in the smaller segments.” The RS Q3 Sportback features a number of design changes from the regular Q3 Sportback, both to stand apart from the range and to reinforce the links to the RS Q3. Design Matthew Baggley said: “When we designed the regular Q3 and Q3 Sportback the aim was to give customers as much differentiation as possible, but for the RS models we felt it necessary to bring them back together.” As a result, both models have wheel arches to widen their width by 10mm (the track remains unchanged). They also get a customised front grille with a single frame design. There are also sculpted air intakes in the new-look front bumper. While the intakes are designed to reflect the RS6 Avant and RS7 Sportback, they feature a ‘boomerang’ design that is unique to the two RS Q3 models. There are standard LED lights at both the front and rear of the car. The differences between the RS Q3 and the RS Q3 Sportback are more apparent from the side, with the Sportback’s sloping coupe-style roof making it 45mm lower than the RS Q3. It also has a lower shoulder line, designed to emphasise the car’s stance. The RS Q3 Sportback gains its own rear wing design, and a bespoke rear bumper and diffuser, designed to set it apart at the back and make the car appear even wider. As with the RS Q3, the Sportback features twin exhausts. Inside, both models offer black leather and Alcantara sports seats and other bespoke design details, with a number of Audi Sport-exclusive options on the Drive Select and infotainment system. There are a number of RS details, and more available – including Nappa leather seats with integrated head rests – via a number of customisation options. Underneath their bodywork, the RS Q3 and Sportback are mechanically identical, powered by an upgraded version of the five-cylinder, 2.5-litre turbo from the first-generation RS Q3, and also used in the TT RS. The unit has been tuned to produce 394bhp, compared to 335bhp in the old RS Q3 – 362bhp for the Performance variant – and also offers 343lb ft of torque 1950 and 5850 rpm. That gives the Q3 Sportback a 0-62mph time of 4.5secs, with a limited top speed of 155mph (174mph with the optional Performance pack). Power is delivered to all four wheels through a seven-speed automatic gearbox, with wheel-selective torque control to aid traction and handling. Audi’s Drive Select system features six modes, including two bespoke RS options accessible via a steering wheel button. Both models sit 10mm lower than the regular Q3 and Q3 Sportback and feature sport suspension and Audi’s Dynamic Chassis Control as standard, with MacPherson struts at the front and a four-link design at the rear. They also feature specially tuned progressive steering, with a choice of 20 or 21in wheels and steel or ceramic brake discs. The RS Q3 Sportback will go on sale early next year, at the same time as the RS Q3. While pricing has not been finalised, it is expected to be above the £44,785 of the old RS

First Look: 2020 VW ID.3

The VW ID.3 is a rear-wheel drive all-electric vehicle heralding the German automakers first foray into its ambitious electrified future.Andrew McCreide What is it?The 2020 ID.3 is the first production electric vehicle from Volkswagen utilizing VWs new modular electric drive matrix (MEB), featuring the batteries integrated into the underbody that when combined with the vehicles long wheelbase create a spacious five-seater for a compact segment entry. There are three battery size options: the entry level features a 45-kWh battery with a full-charge range of 330 kilometres (note: all ranges are based on the world harmonized light-duty vehicles test procedure, meaning Canadian ranges will be less); the middle battery option is a 58-kWh with a 420-km range; and the big-battery option is a 77-kWh unit with a range of 550 km.According to VW, a fast charger (output of 100 kW) will juice the ID.3 to a range of approximately 290 km within 30 minutes. The rear-wheel-drive hatchback can be seen as the e-Golf 2.0, though is a complete clean-sheet design with all-new architecture. Likewise, the futuristic cabin design is all new and lights the way for the coming onslaught of VW EVs.Why does it matter? The ID.3 represents the first tangible step in VW distancing itself from Dieselgate, the company having found a new religion in EVs. So much so that it has staked its future on the zero-emission technology with a US$91-billion commitment to build and sell mass-production vehicles in the coming decade. Needless to say, to VW this vehicle matters a lot. The ID Crozz concept on the Frankfurt show floor. When Canadians finally get a new VE EV, it will likely be a crossover based on this vehicle. Andrew McCredie When is it coming? To Canada? Its not. Europe is the market for the ID.3, and while VW Canadas Thomas Tetzlaff said wed love to have it in Canada, the first of the new generation of VW EVs Canadians will get a chance to buy will be a crossover based on the ID Crozz concept, pictured above. While he cant say exactly when that Tennessee-built CUV EV will be in showrooms, he offered (hoped?) it could be as soon as late 2021.Should you buy it?As it wont be available in Canada, not really a relevant question. However, considering the commitment that VW has put into designing and building this hatchback coupled with its excellent full-charge range its safe to say this most likely will be a good vehicle. We also love the fact that it is

New self-driving BMW ad appears to promote having sex in moving vehicle

The 2021 BMW Vision iNEXT concept.Handout / BMW BMWs latest advertisement for its Vision iNext prototype a precursor, we’re told, to a near-future fully self-driving vehicle has for the first time shown off the SUV concept driving down the road with, apparently, nobody behind the wheel. Well, nobody sitting attentively in the drivers seat in an upright position, anyway.Yes, the German automakers finally gone ahead and made an actual commercial spot showing what appears to be people having sex in an autonomous vehicle. To get a little less vague, the video ad starts off with a couple getting close to each other, in what appears to be a bedroom.https://twitter.com/BMWi/status/1176149276931629056?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembedref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fd-15609724643529385794.ampproject.net%2F1909141409590%2Fframe.htmlRed and blue lights flash across their bodies, with the next sequence showing BMWs new flagship SUV driving down the street, and a police car with lights flashing driving past. The implication, here, is cruiser has no qualms with iNext zipping along with the couple inside was experiencing, uh, new moments of joy, in BMWs words. Were not sure if this is really the best tactic to drive home the point the Vision iNext offers a space where everything can be done with ease, and having a police officer drive by without noticing someone isnt behind the wheel certainly doesnt help the cause. On the other hand, sex sells, we guess.A few months ago there was a real account of people having sex in a Tesla while Autopilot was engaged. Elon Musk himself even Tweeted about it.While wed hoped Musk might have denounced the act, instead he thought it a good idea to make a joke about it. Funny, sure, but probably the dumbest thing he could have done. Considering autonomous vehicle technology is still very much in its teething stages, we probably shouldnt be jumping ahead to more adult autonomous content just

2017 Acura NSX bought new by Seinfeld comes up for auction

In the final episode of season nine of Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee, host Jerry Seinfeld and his guest caffeinate themselves in between drives in a then-new 2017 Acura NSX. The car, chassis number 0004, was ordered with over US$40,000 of extras by the 65-year-old comedian and then gifted to his friend, late comedian – and the guest in that episode – Bob Einstein. (Seinfeld still has one of the most impressive celebrity car collections in the world, even without the NSX.)Sadly, Einstein passed away in January, and the car is currently up for auction on Bring A Trailer as part of his estate. The 2017 NSX shows 2,556 miles (4,113 km) on the odometer and is finished in Nord Gray Metallic with a saddle leather interior. It’s been optioned with carbon-ceramic brakes, exclusive wheels, a new audio system and a bunch of carbon fibre inside and out. Acura’s twin-turbo 3.5-litre V6 works alongside a trio of electric motors making a combined power output of 573 horsepower and 476 lb.-ft. of torque, which moves the NSX to 96 km/h in 2.9 seconds and pushes on up to a top speed of 307 km/h. The car comes with its original sticker, which show a 2017 price of $200,500. SUV Comparison: 2020 Hyundai Palisade vs. 2019 Buick Enclave

Brian Harper: Its not as though the Palisade is Hyundais first kick at the three-row SUV can. No, there was the Veracruz, an ill-fated attempt at breaking into the market that ended poorly back in 2012. More successful was the Santa Fe XL, though stuffing three rows of seats into a mid-sized SUV was still a compromise. The XL has now been replaced by the flagship Palisade, the largest SUV the Korean automaker has ever built. Its longer, wider and capable of accommodating eight passengers. The Palisade is a more complete vehicle by all accounts, yet it still has a number of established rivals Nissan Pathfinder, Toyota Highlander, Dodge Durango, Ford Explorer, etc. plus a few recent arrivals, including the Volkswagen Atlas, Subaru Ascent, and the Palisades own corporate cousin, the Kia Telluride. However, were going to dial it up a notch and pit the Hyundai against a more premium-priced three-row sport-ute Buicks Enclave Avenir. Why? Well, the most obvious reason was that one was available. Beyond that, however, its been a while since weve gotten behind the wheel of the big Buick. Its a model thats been around for a dozen years, the second-generation version coming out for the 2018 model year. It sells reasonably well in both Canada and the U.S., and the Avenir sub-brand supposedly represents the highest expression of Buick luxury, with unique styling cues and an extensive set of standard features and premium materials throughout the vehicle. Hyundai has proven in the past its not afraid of moving its products upscale, though it has been accused of exceeding its place in the past. So, is the Palisade capable of mixing it up with a senior, albeit conservative, member of the family hauler class? Whaddaya say, kid? Nick Tragianis: Lets start with the fundamentals, shall we? Under the skin, the Palisade is identical to the Telluride. That means power comes from a normally aspirated 3.8-litre V6 rated at 291 horsepower and 262 pound-feet of torque, hooked up to an eight-speed automatic transmission. All-wheel drive is standard on all but the base Palisade. Its a similar story with the Enclave. Its a bit more powerful than the Palisade, putting out 310 horsepower and 266 lb-ft of torque from its 3.6L V6. Its paired to a nine-speed automatic, and like the Palisade, all-wheel drive is standard on all but the base Enclave. These two make absolutely zero pretense to sportiness and thats OK. Both are drama-free that never once felt underpowered or overworked, both have light and fairly numb steering, but that just makes them easy to live with day to day. And both are museum-quiet and La-Z-Boy comfortable. If you need to tow, both can haul up to 5,000 pounds. Really, at this point, youre splitting hairs both the Palisade and Enclave are smart, no-nonsense family haulers. But the Palisade punches well above its weight on the inside, especially for the price. Like you said, old dude, Hyundai isnt afraid to push the upscale envelope. Thats abundantly clear in the Palisade materials and fit and finish are top-notch, the seats are comfortable and overall ergonomics are on point, and the available tech is nothing to sneeze at. Our particular tester, the almost-fully loaded Limited at a hair above $50,000, comes with a sharp 10.25-inch touchscreen controlling the infotainment system, plus power-folding third-row seats, heated and cooled front seats (the second row is also heated), and all the active safety features youd expect in 2019, including a crisp 360-degree camera system. Spec the right upholstery option and the interior feels bright and airy, and the faux wood and metal accents add a lovely touch, despite them being plastic. Seems as though the Enclave Avenir has its work cut out for it. BH: Im sensing you like the Palisade, kid. So do I. Still, the Enclave deserves some respect. Buick has been fine-tuning this full-sized rig for years, and has managed to make it fairly drama-free. It handles its family-hauling duties with a certain amount of panache, being far more distinctly styled than many of its rivals, including the more mainstream Palisade. And, as you mentioned, its particularly silent around town; Buick has this Quiet Tuning technology its been touting for some time, not to mention active noise cancellation. In a straight line, the Enclave will accelerate a bit quicker. When cornering, however, the Buicks extra 180 kilograms are noticeable; theres a certain ponderousness to it that works against it.Now the cabin: The best part is that the Buick offers a fair amount of cargo flexibility, with significantly more capacity than the Palisade 688 litres behind the third row versus 509 litres for the Hyundai; 1,643 litres behind the second row folded versus the Palisades 1,296 litres. Also, with the pull of a handle, the SmartSlide second-row seats glide back to enable easy third-row access. And with the push of a button, the power-folding split

New Toyota program will help owners of white cars with peeling paint

2011 Toyota Rav4 Owners of Toyota vehicles with peeling paint may get some relief under a new program being implemented by Toyota Canada.According to a report from CBC News, Toyota Canada will offer a voluntary customer support program similar to action taken by Toyota USA for owners whose white vehicles are starting to peel.Exactly what Toyota will do to solve the problem still isnt clear, but a Toyota Canada spokesperson said when the program is ready, owners of affected vehicles will get a notice in the mail.In the U.S., Toyota responded to reports that certain vehicles painted in Blizzard Pearl or Super White were peeling. According to the notice sent to owners, these specific factory-applied colours could peel on exterior metal body parts when, over time, sunlight degrades the adhesion between the coating on the metal and the paint primer. According to CBC News, the notice to customers doesnt say what Toyota will do whether it will repaint the entire vehicle, or what years and models will be covered. The company said it will reimburse customers who previously paid to have their paint repaired, but didnt specify if it will pay the whole bill or just a portion. Those who own Toyota vehicles painted in these colours are advised to update their information with the manufacturer, if necessary, to ensure that they receive a notice in the
