2019 Ram 1500 Laramie Longhorn OVERVIEW The most hedonistic pickup a lot of money can buy PROSHandling, ride, interior décor CONSRelatively moderate performance VALUE FOR MONEYCompared with other pickups? Not so good. Compared with luxury sedans and SUVs with fewer hedonisms, pretty darn good. WHAT TO CHANGE?A little more power, a lot less lane departure warning and even more chrome. Go big or go home! HOW TO SPEC IT?Well, it’s pretty fully-loaded from the factory, but the active suspension option is worth the dosh. For purists, it is surely a tragedy, as genuinely cowboy as John Travolta was in his famed celluloid two-step. For luxury shoppers, its a way for the more, lets call them ruggedly individualistic, affluent to thumb their noses at the effete that park BMWs and Audis in their driveway. And, for Fiat Chrysler, well, its one sweet, incredibly high-profit way to line their pockets with long-amortized-on-the-production-line economies of scale margins that would make Porsche blanch. It, in case youre wondering, is the Ram 1500 Laramie Longhorn, a pickup that, in my testers guise at least, costs $88,495. Yes, youre reading that right, a $100,000 (with taxes) pickup without a Tesla Im-saving-the-world-one-overpriced-EV-at-a-time lithium battery to be seen.Just for a little context. $88,495 will buy you a brand new E-Class Benz. And not one of those pathetic little wheezy E300 four-bangers Mercedes sells to pretenders to largesse, but a full-zoot 429-horsepower E53 with Stuttgart’s latest high-tech, turbocharged 3.0-litre inline six including EQ Boost and electric auxiliary compressor, no less! with enough cash left over to buy a decent used Harley.More of an SUV person, are we? Well, for that kind of dosh actually, you might have to pony up about $3,000 more you can get fully loaded BMW Sport Activity Vehicle. And again, not one of those piddly little baby Xs that theyre selling to advertising agency social media coordinators, but the top-of-the-line, expanded-because-people-wanted-to-spend-even-more-money X7s. You know, the SUV equivalent to BMWs flagship limo-in-waiting 7 Series. In other words, the Laramie Longhorn faces some pretty stiff competition from some pretty heady marques for the American Express Black cards of the rich and feckless. Now, heres the crazy part. It might be worth it.As frequent readers already know, I am no expert on the utilitarian aspect of truckdom. Oh, I hauled a bicycle around in the Rams plasticized bed and, in fact, carted an old dishwasher to the dump, er recycling depot, with it. But thats as close as I got to doing anything even remotely manly with it. No gravel, other than that trapped in the treads of my Nikes was hauled, no wood corded, my cowboying no less urbane than Mr. Saturday Night Fevers. But, my Lord, what a truly luxurious vehicle this is. For one thing, the ride is simply incredible for something that still has a live axle out back. Certainly, it is the smoothest damped pickup Ive ever driven. Before testing the big Ram, I read up on its latest technology, singling out the Frequency Response Damping and Active Level 4 corner air suspension for conspicuously pretentious labelling. Now I am a fan. FCA says its FRD shocks can tell the difference between low-speed inputs as in the loads that occur when a vehicle sways during hard cornering and high-speed perturbations the inevitable potholes resulting from shoddy Canadian roadwork. Im not quite sure how it tells the difference, but it must work because, even on the pockmarked roads of rural Quebec, the Laramie rode like a Lexus and handled like Porsche. OK, I exaggerate, but it was mighty impressive nonetheless. Then, theres the Laramies interior. I could go through the various visual such as the humongous, 12-inch vertically-oriented, Tesla-like touch screen or aural the Harman Kardon sound system but mere listing doesnt capture the sheer hedonism of this Rams interior. Now, to those raised on BMW or Mercedes Spartanism, the Rams cabin will be a little bit of a shock, what with Longhorn badges that look like outsized countrified belt buckles, map pocket clasps that are outsized countrified belt buckles and trim that looks, for all the world, like the reclaimed barn wood that is all the rage these days. The cabin was even Lexus-like silent thanks to Rams noise cancellation system and liberal use of acoustic glass. Indeed, the decor may be different but I can assure you the extravagance was equal to anything this side of a Bentley. Everyone who climbed aboard the big Ram aided, of course, by automatically retractable side steps was impressed, nay astonished, by the Longhorns incredible interior. Indeed, the least impressive thing about the new Ram is its 5.7-litre V8. Considering that it possesses a more-than-middling 395 horsepower and 410 pound-feet of torque some of that due to the 48 Volt eTorque mild hybrid system the performance was

Mazda previews imminent rotary engine revival
Mazda has confirmed it will reveal its next generation of rotary engines later this week via its Chinese branch’s Weibo social media account. Chang’an Mazda posted an image of the brand’s first rotary-engined model, the 1967 Cosmo coupé, accompanied by a new logo for the brand’s “7th Gen Product Cluster” and the phrase “rotor engines make the world more beautiful”. At the 2017 Tokyo motor show, Mazda boss Mitsuo Hitomi voiced plans for the firm to bring back its famed rotary engine as a range extender because it is “much, much quieter” than the alternatives. The Japanese firm’s range hasn’t featured a rotary-engined road car since the RX-8 went out of production in 2012 but it did produce a prototype Mazda 2 featuring the tech back in 2013, which Autocar drove. It has remained interested in reintroducing the technology to production since. Mazda’s RX-Vision Concept, which was shown at the Tokyo motor show in 2015, used such a powertrain. Hitomui later confirmed that, rather than being used in its purest form, a rotary engine will appear in a range extender version of its first electric vehicle due in 2019. When asked if Mazda was developing a standalone rotary engine, he said: “Even if there isn’t a plan to have it in an actual product, of course we are developing a rotary engine alone.” He strongly hinted that a rotary engine-powered model is likely to exist alongside the range extender in the future. Asked why Mazda will use a rotary engine as a range extender, Hitomi said “the rotary engine isn’t particularly efficient to use as a range extender but when we turn on a rotary, it is much, much quieter compared to other manufacturers’ range-extenders”, which is seemingly suited to the near silence of electric cars. Mazda’s recent engine focus has been on the development of compression ignition Skyactiv-X petrol engines, which now feature in the new 3 hatchback and CX-30 crossover. For the original Cosmo, the company developed a Wankel rotary engine with the help of a German firm called NSU. Rotary engines, which use rotors instead of pistons, are generally smaller and lighter than traditional petrol engines, without any loss of power. Since the RX-8 ended production, the firm’s only machines to feature a rotary engine have been the race cars in the American Pro Mazda junior single-seater series. Recently, a patent filed by Mazda looked to preview a lightweight, front-mid-engined sports car with an engine bay just big enough for a compact rotary

Uber is suing New York City over rule aimed to reduce traffic congestion
Times Square, New York City, New York State, Night, TaxiGetty Uber is suing the New York City Taxi and Limousine Commission over a new regulation intended to reduce traffic congestion, saying the rule is arbitrary and cant be achieved. The suit, which seeks to nullify the rule passed August 7, was filed in New York state court in Manhattan, and reported on late September. One part of the new regulation places a 31-per-cent cap on the amount of time that for-hire vehicles can spend on the road without passengers, while another provision bars the issuance of more for-hire vehicle licenses until August 2020.While reducing congestion in Manhattan is an important goal and one Uber has publicly and vocally supported the August 2019 rule is the product of a rushed and unlawful process, including reliance on flawed and arbitrary economic modeling, Uber said in the

The Porsche Taycan is built in the ‘factory of the future’
A proud moment for factory workers during the grand opening of the state-of-the-art facility in the Zuffenhausen district of Stuttgart.Andrew McCredie STUTTGART, Germany Electric vehicle skeptics delight in dismissing the zero emission claims of EVs by citing the significant carbon footprint from the manufacturing process.Porsche AG is well on its way to eliminating that specious argument with its brand new Taycan production facility here in the very heart of Porsche country.Porsche is pursuing the goal of a Zero Impact Factory production without any negative impact on the environment, explained Albrecht Reimold, member of the executive board for production and logistics of Porsche AG.With a projected annual output capability of 20,000 vehicles, the facility is using electricity from renewable sources and biogas to generate heat. In addition, the new production buildings are designed to be extremely energy efficient. Further efforts on the way to zero emissions are the electrically powered logistics vehicles, the use of waste heat in the paint shop, the greening of roof areas and what the company calls a continuous and holistic approach to other potential resource savings.Porsche has committed to invest more than $8.75 billion in electromobility by 2022, and spent $1.1 billion in the new Taycan production facilities alone; $1.46 billion if you include the new body shop, which will also be used for the current generation of the Porsche 911.What is also significant about the new factory is its location in Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen, literally just a few hundred metres from the still-utilized, brick workshop where company founder Ferdinand Porsche built the first-ever 911 (and years earlier the prototype for what would become the Volkswagen Beetle). When the company first set out planning to produce the Taycanbased on the Mission E concept vehicle displayed at the 2015 Frankfurt showPorsches global headquarters was not even considered, the thinking being there was not enough space to build the factory in Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen nor did it make financial sense in comparison to other sites in Eastern Europe and even China. But as the project evolved, Porsche decided the place where it all began for the company was the exact place where its ambitious plans for electromobilitya so-called new era for Porscheshould start. In addition, building the Taycan in the same place where all the companys sports cars are produced underscores the Taycans sports car aspirations. The Taycan is a clear sign of our commitment to this traditional site, which were leading into the future by preserving jobs here and even creating new ones, said Reimold, noting that employees are participating financially in the project by putting a quarter of a per cent of their negotiated pay raise into a fund, an arrangement he said is a first in the automotive industry.Once in full production mode, some 1,500 workers are expected to be involved in the manufacturing

2019 Skoda Superb: plug-in hybrid pricing announced
Skoda has revealed its new Superb iV plug-in hybrid will start from £31,970 when it arrives Britain in January. The figure was revealed to journalists during the UK launch of the rest of the revised Superb range, and makes the new model £4,730 cheaper than its sibling, the Volkswagen Passat GTE. The hybrid will be launched as the Superb iV in recognition of Skoda’s new sub-brand that will be used for its bold electrification plans. The Superb iV features a 154bhp, 1.4-litre TSI petrol engine mated to a 114bhp electric motor, which sends drive to the front wheels through a six-speed DSG transmission. The peak system output is 220bhp, with 295lb ft of torque. The car will be capable of completing 34 miles of pure electric running, identical to the similar Volkswagen Passat GTE. Skoda has yet to release performance figues, but insiders suggest they will closely match the Passat, hinting at a 0-62mph time of around 7.4sec for the saloon. The brand also promises an official CO2 rating of under 40g/km. A battery pack is located under the floor and ahead of the rear axle, which means a slight reduction in boot capacity – 485 litres for the saloon and 510 litres for the estate, compared with 625 and 660 for the non-hybrid versions respectively. Beyond the well-hidden charging port integrated into the front grille, there will be little to give away the PHEV’s part-electric status. The infotainment system can display information on battery status and electric range and additional controls for the various powertrain modes. It will also be possible to programme the PHEV’s air-con to cool the cabin before the car is needed. Prices for the rest of the range, with traditional petrol and diesel engines, start from £24,655 for the saloon and £25,975 for the estate version. The updated model has launched with a choice of two petrol and two diesel engines, and in six trim levels. Entry-level S models, offered with a 1.6-litre petrol or diesel engine, feature LED front and rear lights, and a new infotainment system featuring voice control. SE trim adds features including 17in alloy wheels, dual-zone climate control, parking sensors and adaptive cruise control. Above that, SE Technology features leather upholstery, heated seats and integrated wi-fi. SE L includes 18in alloy wheels, rear privacy glass, full matrix LED headlights and an electrically operated boot. SportLine Plus trim comes with 19in alloy wheels and black sports styling details, along with Alcantara upholstery and a three-spoke sport steering wheel. The range-topping Laurin Klement trim features all of the kit from SE L, and adds 18in alloy wheels, ventilated front seats, heated front and reat seats, LED interior lighting, three-zone climate control, an upgraded navigation system and a Canton sound system, along with Skoda’s Dynamic chassis control system. The existing Superb powertrains will be carried over for the facelifted model, with a new 2.0-litre 190bhp TSI unit added. The range-topper will be a 268bhp 2.0-litre turbocharged version – down around 8bhp from the outgoing on car due to the inclusion of a petrol paticulate filter and other emissions control systems. The redesigned Superb has gained a new-look grille, with added chrome trim between the LED rear lights. There is also a new front bumper, which stretches the length of the car by 8mm to 4869mm. The car is the first Skoda to gain full LED matrix headlights as an option, and new driver assistance features include predictive cruise control that makes use of data from road signs. Deliveries for the facelifted car begin in September. Skoda promises the PHEV will be highly competitive in its increasingly crowded part of the market, and is anticipated to constitute up to 20% of sales in the

Welcome to our weekly round-up of the biggest breaking stories on Driving.ca from this past week. Get caught up and ready to get on with the weekend, because it’s hard keeping pace in a digital traffic jam. Here’s what you missed while you were away.Mall customer parked in the wrong spot gets instant paybackA shopper at an Argentinian mall who thought they’d found the perfect oversized parking spot for their small Peugeot 208 hatchback was instead served up a lesson in properly reading signs. The car was parked in the shopping cart area of the mall, but that didn’t stop the employees responsible for returning the carts to their home. A photo taken by another shopper and posted to Facebook shows the car surrounded on all sides by row after row of carts, and judging by the 7,000+ shares, few people feel sorry for the bonehead Peugeot driver. Quebec moves up mandatory winter tire date by two weeksQuebec residents have fewer than 80 days to have snow tires installed on their vehicles if they plan to keep (legally) driving them on provincial roads this coming winter season. As of December 1, 2019 – a full two weeks earlier than last year’s date – all cars must be wearing the appropriate tires as outlined in a significant 80-point revision of the province’s Highway Safety Code. Those cars that don’t have winters from Dec 1 to March 15 not only run the heightened risk of an accident, but may also face fines of $200-$300. Study reveals top 10 cars kept the longest by original ownersA recent study conducted by online car search engine iSeeCars has rounded up the top 10 vehicles that owners keep the longest. On the list are five sports cars, three SUVs and one sedan. Toyota vehicles took four of the ten spots, with the Land Cruiser leading the list with an average ownership period of 11.4 years. The second longest-kept vehicle is the Chevrolet Corvette at 10.4 years, while the third spot goes to another sports car, the Mercedes-Benz SL-Class. When the car, which has a dashcam, honks but stops to allow the pedestrian to jaywalk across the street, the man stares down the driver HARD. But when he gets to the other side, eyes still locked on the driver, he walks right into a pole on the sidewalk. Is there anything more satisfying than watching a jerk get his comeuppance? Why a U.K. driver spent nearly $50k fighting a $165 speeding ticketA British man and former RAF electronics specialist has spent nearly $50,000 and three years disputing a $165 speeding ticket he received for allegedly doing 57 km/h in a 50 km/h zone. The man, who was sent the fine after being captured by a traffic camera, claims he’s been wrongly ticketed due to something called the “double Doppler effect,” which can cause cameras to incorrectly measure a vehicle’s speed when radio waves bounce off a second vehicle. Years and tens of thousands of dollars later and the man has given up and paid the fine. He still owes over $10,000 in legal fees, however, and is considering whether to go for another

The emperor of Japan is getting a convertible Toyota Century
Theres a new emperor in town, and apparently, his new groove is going topless.Topless vehicle that is! Yes, after 30 years of the Heisei Era ended and the Reiwa Era began, its also time for a new car to carry the royal family to the succession ceremony on October 22. This time its a real doozy, a convertible Toyota Century.Toyota doesnt make a Century convertible for the masses, but when the emperor of a country especially the country where your company originated wants one, you would be hard-pressed to refuse.According to Japanese Nostalgic Car, the vehicle is officially a royal parade car, and so has been fitted with parade appropriate features. Obviously, the roof has been removed, but the Century remains a four-door, with four seats. The rear seats have been raised 4 centimetres and are fixed at a 25-degree angle for onlookers to get an unobstructed view of the royals. Other than the modifications, the car is a stock, third-generation Toyota Century, which despite its mundane appearance, is one of the most impressive vehicles ever made. The paint is carefully applied with seven layers, and then wet-sanded three times. The front grille emblem is carved by hand over a six-week process. This is the first new parade car in 30 years, with the previous being a 1990 Rolls-Royce Corniche III which was only used twice. After the Century carries Emperor Naruhito through the 4.6-kilometre route from the Imperial palace through Tokyo to Akasaka Palace, it will be displayed in Tokyo and Kyoto and will be used for special occasions like the 2020

Honda to remove diesel in Europe by 2021
Honda to remove diesel in Europe by 2021 Electric and hybrid models will replace diesels within the next few years Honda will phase out all diesel cars from its line-up by 2021, replacing them with electric and electrified powertrains. Reports from Reuters say that the Japanese firm is ditching diesel power as Honda moves to electrify all of its European models by 2025. Plans include pure-electric models – like the forthcoming Honda e – as well as plug-in hybrids and other electric vehicles. These will account for two-thirds of its car line-up by 2013, if all goes to plan, compared to a figure of less than 10% now. Declining demand for diesel power in Europe is a key reason behind the move, and Honda’s latest hybrid powertrain – launched on the CR-V – is expected to largely replace diesel options in the near future. Stricter emissions limits means the CR-V has already had a diesel option removed, and the Jazz only has a petrol engine in its line-up. The Civic and HR-V are currently the only models in the Honda range that have a diesel engine. The next-generation Jazz will be a hybrid-only model in Europe, having previously been confirmed as such by Honda, and the Honda e is due on sale early next year.

MG ZS EV gets extended discount offer following record sales
MG has extended its attractive discount on its ZS EV after it recieved 2000 orders in the first two months of going on sale. The offer, which will be available to the brand’s next 1000 UK customers, will continue to see MG match the government’s £3500 plug-in car grant on the top-spec Executive model, bringing its list price down to £23,495. The entry-level ZS EV Excite will get a £3000 discount, which when paired with the government grant, brings the price down to £21,995. According to data supplied by the SMMT, MG sold 1078 units in total in June 2019, highlighting the ZS’s initial sales figures as a significant surge in demand. While it took longer for the ZS EV to reach 2000 sales, it is hoped the extended discount will continue momentum for the affordable EV. “Since the official launch of the ZS EV in July, MG dealerships across the country have reported unprecedented demand from customers eager to get behind the wheel,” Daniel Gregorious, MG UK’s Head of Sales Marketing, said. “Our mission at MG is to make high-tech, zero-emissions cars available to all, and we are well on our way.” Once the next 1000 examples have been sold, the ZS EV will be available from £24,995, including the government grant. Although largely unrivalled in its position as a value electric compact SUV, the ZS EV represents a much more affordable alternative to the Kia e-Niro, which starts from £32,995 after grant. The ZS EV’s chief rival, Hyundai’s Kona Electric, is priced slightly higher at £27,250, but is currently off-sale in the UK, with prospective buyers encouraged to join a waiting list. Like Hyundai and Kia, MG is applying a seven-year warranty to all ZS models sold in the UK. The discounted price puts the ZS EV among the cheapest electric cars available in the UK. The ageing Citroen C-Zero is the only mainstream EV available for less, at £17,020 including the grant. The ZS EV was first revealed at the Guangzhou motor show in China last year, and will be sold alongside the existing petrol versions of the ZS. The UK-bound ZS EV makes use of a front-mounted electric motor, producing 141bhp and 260lb ft. The car’s water-cooled 44.5kWh lithium ion battery is good for a 163-mile range on the WLTP test cycle, and is capable of rapid charging from flat to around 80% capacity in half an hour. Styling changes over the conventionally fuelled model are minimal, and limited to the integration of a charging point in its blanked off grille, and the addition of a newly designed set of 17in alloy wheels. Inside, standard equipment includes an 8in touchscreen, satnav, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, Bluetooth and DAB radio. The ZS prioritises interior space and practicality, with a split-level boot and several hidden storage areas maximising load capacity. “We’re delighted to be entering the electric car market at such an exciting time,” said Daniel Gregorious, MG’s head of sales and marketing. “With MG’s trademark value-for-money approach, we’re confident that we can help more and more new car buyers to go electric.” UK sales of the EV weren’t confirmed at its global debut last year, but now come as part of the steady growth of the MG brand worldwide and its transition to being a maker of SUVs. MG is enjoying sales success in China, under the ownership of SAIC. Last year, it sold 134,786 cars, a significant increase over the 80,389 sold in 2016. That success accelerated in 2018; MG had already surpassed its 2017 total by the end of August, having sold 179,109 cars. China is the world’s largest market for electric cars, and ranges in excess of 250 miles are now the norm there, rather than the exception. The ZS EV first made its debut alongside the new HS SUV, which is understood to be lined up to replace the GS in MG’s UK range later this
