Hyundai has again previewed its Frankfurt motor show star car, a retro-styled electric concept. Called the 45, it’s said to feature styling references to the brand’s first production car, the Mitsubishi-powered Pony hatchback, which was launched in 1974. The first preview image of the EV showed off an LED bar across the rear that will display a matrix flourish upon start-up. Now a rear-side view reveals the car’s large wheels and minimalist profile. Elsewhere, we can see hints that the 45 will bear a resemblance to sibling brand Genesis’s recent Mint concept, with a rakish roofline, a narrow rear window, extended wheel arches and a low, wide stance. As well as paying tribute to the brand’s historic design work, Hyundai says the 45 will “act as a symbolic milestone for Hyundai’s future EV design”. There’s currently no production intent for the 45; it acts as a design study, rather than a preview of a particular future model. However, a Hyundai spokesperson said the concept is based on a new EV platform and will “preview the potential for EV designers in the future”. The 45 will make its first public appearance alongside an all-new version of the i10 city car and the limited-run i30 N Project C hardcore hot hatch. Luc Donckerwolke, Hyundai’s design chief, said earlier this year that the firm’s styling language needs to be further differentiated from that of sibling brands Genesis and Kia. He said: “Our core task is to differentiate the design philosophy of the three brands, not least because we have a big share in Korea. “We need to differentiate each model, otherwise the landscape is too

Two new Ferrari drop-tops leak out on social media
Ferrari looks set to unveil two important new convertible models according to images circulating on social media. One image, posted to Facebook by Ferrari fan page ‘Cavallino Rampante’ (Prancing Horse), shows what appears to be a drop-top version of the firm’s 812 Superfast at a corporate or private customer event. Bodywork changes over the existing hardtop variant appear to be limited to the addition of a pair of prominent rear buttresses, similar to those on the limited-run SP1 and SP2 Monza, which should enhance aerodynamic efficiency with the roof down. There’s no official word yet on the V12’s performance details, but if (as expected) the new model features the same 789bhp 6.5-litre unit as the coupé, it will be one of the most powerful production convertibles in the world. Also inbound, as shown in an image published by Instagram user trax_x, is a Spider variant of the new F8 Tributo. We’ve only seen it in silhouette form so far, but, as with the 812 Spider, it looks to bear a strong resemblance to its hardtop counterpart, with subtle styling changes at the rear to accommodate a folding roof. It is unclear how soon the models will make their official debut, but given they appear to have been revealed to customers already, we can expect to find out more in the coming

It’s a constant source of amazement that the company that trots out the Micra and Pulsar is the same one that fashions the mighty GT-R. It arrived in the UK in 2009 costing from £57,000, but today’s updated and more powerful version starts at £82,000. All this makes the 50,000-mile 2009 Black Edition we saw for sale at £32,990 very tempting indeed. It has every service accounted for, most performed by leading specialist Litchfield. Being a Black Edition, it has powered seats, a Bose sound system and automatic headlights. Any worries about how it’s been driven can be addressed by taking it to an official Nissan GT-R performance centre, which, for about £60, will interrogate its software. Within a few days, its darkest secrets will drop through your letterbox. Its solid maintenance record suggests all should be well, but while we’re waiting for the performance report, we’d be keen to check for flywheel shaft bearing noise emanating from the bell housing behind the engine. The thought that it’ll need new cam chains in 20,000 miles at a cost of around £2000 will occupy our attention, too. We won’t be unduly worried about transmission noise on the test drive – “they all do that, sir” – but we will check that the dampers aren’t weeping and that the inner shoulders of the tyres aren’t worn. The paint chips easily, in turn causing rust spots to erupt, but the biggest concern regarding bodywork, in addition to crash repairs, is that the bonnet isn’t misaligned. It’s a single-use, pedestrian-friendly item that costs up to £10,000 to replace. It doesn’t seem much for a 2003 DB7 V12 with a claimed full history. The seller says it’s running beautifully, but we’d check for misfires, frail hoses, gearbox coolant leaks, worn brakes, rust, a malfunctioning air-con system and sticky power windows. Pick-ups weren’t always overblown Dodge RAM lookie-likies. The Sierra-based P100, launched in 1987, was a more modest and honest affair. This one’s a 1992 K-reg with 98,000 miles that seems to have avoided hard labour and appears in fine condition. Where does a keen driver on a budget find their Lotus kicks? We found this 80k-mile 1995 Elan S2. No word on its history, but check for faulty injectors causing rough running, the glassfibre body for repairs, a warped hood frame and the underside for scrapes. The 1 Series M Coupé was welcomed with open arms, not least by Autocar, which praised its back-to-basics feel, epic performance and overall handling feel. Our find is a BMW approved used 2012/12-reg manual with 60,000 miles. Auction watch Proof that auctions are the place to go if you want a bargain is this 150,000-mile, 1988-reg 928 that went for £9056. A bargain? Not if it’s a bucket, but this one has just been serviced, so there’s another stamp to add to the 13 already in the file. It had an engine rebuild in 1997 and since then has had £8000 spent on it, with an aluminium radiator among the new parts. We’d have been keen to check that belts, tensioner and water pump had been changed at intervals, that the gearbox isn’t leaking and that the underside and window surrounds are free of rust. Future classic The last Beetle scuttled out of the Mexico factory recently, making this a good time to comb the family album for promising derivatives. And lo, we found this: the 2.0 TSI Turbo with 197bhp and an impressive 206lb ft at just 1700rpm. Check out those 19in Tornado alloys, rear spoiler, privacy glass and red, uprated brake calipers. True, it’s a stretch to imagine it might one day achieve real classic status, but with looks, rarity and performance on its side, it must stand a fairly good chance. And they don’t make them any more… Clash of the classifieds Brief: Find me a bona fide V8 muscle car for £12k. Porsche 928 S4, £10,250 Max Adams: My Mercedes might not be American, but it has all the correct ingredients of a proper muscle car: a huge 6.2-litre V8 in an equally big vehicle, rear-wheel drive and a fantastic soundtrack when you peel away from a stop light. What are your wheels of choice, Mark? Mark Pearson: A wonderful bahnstorming 1987 Porsche 928 S4, complete with that delightful 5.0-litre V8, wonderful balance and, oh, those polar moments of inertia! It’s had £25k spent on it and yet is just £10k to buy. Yours is a taxi, right? MA: Traditional muscle cars are based on saloons, so my E-Class fits the brief. And, of course, they’ve had to spend so much keeping your old crate going because it’s two decades older than mine – which also explains the 200bhp deficit… MP: Mine oozes style, though, and no one complained that it lacked for power back then – it’ll see off 0-60mph in six seconds. It has perfect weight distribution and much else besides, and I should think its price can only go one way. MA: The E-Class wasn’t regarded as a minger at the time either, but this AMG has the subtlety to surprise the uninitiated. MP: Too much of a

Mini to revive Traveller name for BMW i3-based MPV
Mini plans to enter the shrinking market for small MPVs with a new electric model. It will be the brand’s most practical car yet, and it’s thought it will revive the Traveller name. The new Mini MPV has been conceived to appeal to family car buyers seeking greater levels of interior versatility and space than the existing Clubman and Countryman. It will be based on parent company BMW’s FAAR platform, which supports front- and four-wheel drive. There will be versions powered by internal combustion engines, a plug-in hybrid and, later in its seven-year life cycle, a battery-electric driveline in a Traveller SE model. It will rival the Volkswagen ID 3, which will be revealed next month. In pure-electric form, the new Mini model is set to be twinned with the successor to the BMW i3. That means it will be offered with the very latest in battery cell technology and a range exceeding 250 miles. Autocar understands the move is part of a comprehensive realignment of Mini’s global operations that will divide its line-up into two distinct areas. Future models will based on either the FAAR platform or a new entry-level one being developed in a joint venture with Chinese car maker Great Wall Motors. The realignment, masterminded by recently departed BMW chairman Harald Krüger, aims to provide Mini with a less cost-intensive operational base and the scope for a broader range of models. In future, Mini’s production activities will centre on three plants: Born in the Netherlands; Zhangjiagang, China; and Oxford, UK. Satellite operations will continue in India, Malaysia and Thailand. As well as planning replacements for today’s hatch, Clubman and Countryman, Mini is developing two crucial new models that will arrive by the end of 2023. The aim is to increase annual sales volumes well beyond the 361,531 achieved in 2018. One will be the long-awaited production version of the Rocketman, as previously reported by Autocar. The entry-level Smart Forfour rival will be fully electric and based on a development of Great Wall Motors’ ME platform. It will be produced under a joint-venture operation called Spotlight Automotive, based in China. The second approved new model, expected to be called the Traveller, will rival the likes of the Mercedes-Benz B-Class. Plans are in place for it to be developed using technology from the next BMW i3. Described to Autocar as being very much in the mould of BMW’s 2 Series Active Tourer, the new five-seater is intended to complement existing Mini models. Production is likely to begin in the Netherlands near the end of 2022, according to senior Mini

Jeep adds a brace of new variants to the Wrangler line
2020 Jeep Wrangler Willys Edition In a time-honoured tradition of keeping public interest high in the years after a vehicle launch, Jeep is introducing a pair of new trims to the Wrangler lineup. For 2020, customers will have the added choice of a Willys or Black Tan edition. The Willys trim was offered on previous-gen JK Wranglers, where it proved to be a popular option, but this is the first time weve seen it on the new JL.For those unfamiliar, think of the Willys as kind of a Rubicon-lite and youve got the basic idea.It features a limited-slip rear diff, Rubicon rock rails and shocks, heavy-duty brakes and 32-inch Firestone mud terrain tires. This kit, combined with the part-time Command-Trac 44 system which has a two-speed transfer case and a 2.72:1 low-range ratio, gives the Willys much of the Rubicons off-road cred without breaking the bank. Alert readers will have noted those Firestones as an oddity, given the mighty Rubicon wears KO2 shoes. Your author has heard through the grapevine that the manufacturer cannot keep up with tire demand, requiring a switch to Firestones for the Willys. Take that for what you will.Eagle-eyed Jeep spotters will identify a Willys mainly by way of its military-spec hood lettering and gloss black grille. LED peepers are on board as standard, a nice touch. Its available in ten colours and will cost $2,900 on top of a Sport S model.Adding some heritage flair is the Black Tan model which, as you may have surmised, deploys a black-and-tan colour scheme.Offered in all exterior colours, the BT edition features 17-inch dark wheels wrapped in all-terrain tires, snazzy side steps, dark badging and a premium tan soft top. This bundle will set you back $1,995 over and above the Sport S, and is available on both the two- and four-door

Elton John’s first-ever Ferrari coming up for auction
When you make it big, you buy a Ferrari. Its an unstated rule understood, and followed, by almost everybody who has gotten famous or who would like to get famous.Elton John understood it; he bought one immediately after his album Goodbye Yellow Brick Road became a best-selling hit in 1973. He was 26 at the time.Sir Elton sold the car just two years after he bought it (perhaps to buy the Jaguar XK140 featured in the fold of A Single Man) and went on to buy many more Ferraris in his lifetime, but this was his first. For the past 44 years, though, the car has been in the careful stewardship of Ferrari Owners Club members, meaning its probably been well taken care of, amassing only 82,000 miles since new.The car itself is a 1972-model-year 365 GTB/4 Daytona coupe, with a bright red paint job and five-spoke wheels with knock-off hubs. The car is also a rare right-hand-drive model that was destined for the U.K. market (obviously), one of only 158 cars in this specification. A real Daytona is already worth quite a bit of money, but the added provenance of rock-star ownership should add a few extra dollars, even if its been a while since Eltons actually touched the car.The car will be auctioned by Silverstone Auctions, which estimates that the Daytona could bring around 530,000 Euro ($800,000) when it crosses the

Williams reveals lighter yet longer-range EV battery module
Williams Advanced Engineering has developed a new type of lithium ion battery module that could make automotive battery packs up to 30 percent lighter and 37 percent more energy dense. The new module, unveiled at the annual Cenex low carbon vehicle event in Bedforshire, could have wide-reaching benefits if the tech is licenced to EV manufacturers. The innovation means a battery of the same weight as a conventional unit can deliver longer range without compromising power, or higher power without compromising range. A test battery using 16 modules has a storage capacity of 60kWh, produces peak power of 550kW for 20 seconds and peak regeneration of 550kW for 10 seconds. The Adaptive Multi-Chem module is in the development phase and, says Williams Advanced Engineering Technical Director, Paul McNamara, “we could be manufacturing in a small series of around 50 units in the next six to 12 months.” The pack is intended initially for use in high performance premium electric sports cars and the hope is that, as demand grows, the technology will trickle down into the mainstream. The modules could also see service in motorsport and aerospace where endurance and power combined with low weight are priorities. Lithium ion battery packs are usually made up of a single type of cell, each with the same chemistry, energy density and power output. Cells are arranged in modules and the modules are assembled into a complete pack. The Williams design uses two different types of cell chemistry arranged in two separate blocks within the module. Widely used Samsung 21700 30T cylindrical cells provide good energy density and more specialised high performance pouch cells from A123 systems provide the high power. The pouch cells provide the fast release of energy needed for strong acceleration and, as they become depleted, are topped up again from the energy stored in the Samsung cells. Each module has its own integrated, bi-directional DC/DC converter to control the process of energy transfer between the two types of cell. All the control software is written by WAE in-house, each module has a self-contained liquid cooling circuit and can be supplied to customers ready to assemble into battery packs. McNamara concedes that, because of the added complexity and integrated electronics “the cost will be higher than a conventional module but we hope to get economies of scale as number increase.” The new design draws from experience gathered in developing batteries for the Williams F1 team and latterly as sole supplier to the FIA Formula E race series, as well as involvement in a number of electric vehicle

New Renault Zoe details announced
New Renault Zoe details announced Pricing and specification details for the new Zoe EV available Renault has announced prices and specification details for its new Zoe, which features a 245 mile range on a single charge. The popular electric supermini is being launched in second-generation spec with a 52 kWh battery, more powerful R135 100 kW motor, and 50 kWh DC rapid charging capability via its CCS inlet. CCS charging is offered as an option, with the existing 22 kW Chameleon Charger fitted as standard to the new Zoe. Those opting for the CCS inlet will be able to charge at 7 kW on home and public AC units. The currently available R110 80 kW motor is also available to buyers. Performance for the R135-powered models – available on Iconic and GT Line trims – is indicated by a 9.5 seconds 0-62mph time. The R110-powered models – in Play or Iconic trim – see the same sprint completed in 11.4 seconds. New styling features inside and out add a freshness to the new Zoe, though it is clearly a case of evolution rather than revolution aesthetically. There are sharper lines, a new front end, and LED lights front and rear. The interior sees a new digital instrument panel and larger touchscreen infotainment system fitted. New materials are used – with 100% recycled seat trim on Iconic versions – and the centre console, including gear selector, has been given an overhaul. Equipment includes Apple CarPlay/Android Auto compatibility, wireless phone charging, the 10-inch instrument cluster, 9.3-inch Renault Easy Link system, a suite of safety systems, and a new B Mode regenerative braking system. This new B function is designed to allow ‘one-pedal’ driving much of the time, with a stronger braking set-up for better performance in heavy traffic or urban driving. Available in three trim levels – Play, Iconic, and GT Line – the new Zoe starts at £25,670 including Plug-in Car Grant with full purchase. That will see buyers get the R110 motor with Play specification – no CCS option is available on Play trim. Iconic and GT Line models can see the CCS charger included for £750 on top of their £27,170 (Iconic R110), £27,620 (Iconic R135), and £28,620 (GT Line R135) prices. Battery leasing remains an option, which sees the price of the new Zoe start at £18,670 (including PiCG) though mandatory battery leasing prices – depending on mileage – need to be factored in to costs.
