Peugeot 3008 Hybrid4 details announced The new PHEV will have an electric range of 36 miles Peugeot has revealed details of its forthcoming plug-in hybrid – the 2008 GT Hybrid4 – which will feature a range of up to 36 miles on a single charge. The new SUV features a 13.2 kWh battery, powering two electric motors, which combine with a 200hp 1.6-litre petrol engine to produce 300hp (220kW). As such, the 0-60mph time is just 5.9 seconds, thanks in part to the all-wheel drive system and eight-speed EAT8 automatic transmission. Charging will take less than two hours from a 7kW charge point, via the Type 2 inlet on the car’s rear flank. Emissions are rated as 29 g/km CO2, which when combined with the electric-only range, gives the 3008 Hybrid4 a BIK rating of 10% from April next year. Peugeot has confirmed that a front-wheel drive version of the 3008 PHEV will come along at a later date, with a single 80 kW electric motor placed on the front axle, working with a lower-powered 180hp petrol engine, for a combined 225hp (165kW). The 3008 GT Hybrid4 will be joined by PHEV versions of the 508 Fastback and 508 SW estate, plus the new 208 and 2008 will both be offered with pure-electric powertrains, as Peugeot electrifies its line-up.

Ferrari tech boss on EVs, V12s and next LaFerrari
“Emotions are the actual secret of Ferrari. Take Bugatti: they put 1000hp in a car, and if you go straight, it works very well. To have fun on mountain streets, we think this is our secret. It’s not just about being on the limit. Our cars are always fun. “But what’s fun? It’s sound, perceived acceleration – not just the 0-100kph or 0-200kph times. I accelerate and I feel the torque and how the acceleration evolves. It’s not like driving a diesel. It’s a turbo that evolves power and torque like on a naturally aspirated engine. “Then it’s a go-kart feeling. Everything you do brings a controllable feel to the car. Every customer can drive a Ferrari and have fun. “We have a very special engineering approach which combines engineering data with perceived emotions. We have a catalogue of manoeuvres which are connected to car characteristics perceived from customers. So we talk a lot to customers and our test drivers are very capable of translating customer perceptions into more engineering evaluations of cars. “So back to the F8 and its successor. If an SF90 is a very performance-orientated car with high fun to drive, the F8 successor will have less performance (than 1000hp) but maybe more fun to drive. More driving emotions, more capable, even lighter… We’re thinking of some specialities.” Will you continue to develop V12 engines? “We will try and build it for as long as possible. I am convinced there is still space for it on the market and we can do it technically and manage emissions. We’re working on the next EU6c emissions and will add gasoline particulate filters to manage this.” With the SF90 Stradale and the upcoming SUV in 2022, there will be six Ferrari model lines. Will you stick at six in the future? “No. The company has to grow. By repositioning that, you can grow in a certain way, or add certain models. We’re not interested in volume. It’s revenue. Volume doesn’t interest us.” Will you make a pure-electric Ferrari? “Right now, the technology is not mature enough. Look at customer requirements: the most important thing is sound. Today, there is also a problem on range, which for a sports car really is a problem. The range of an electric car is especially so if you accelerate or go with high speed. These are contributors to sports cars. You need high speeds and you can’t limit to 200kph. If you’d like to remove that technical constraint, you add so much weight it’s not a sports car. “Maybe in a few years, it could be a possibility. To sell the technology, you need a big step.” Ferrari tends to make a new hypercar around every 10 years. As the LaFerrari is almost seven years old, is work under way on its successor? “It is true that almost every 10 years we bring one out. It’s also true that Ferrari only does one when new technology is available. So we have to understand what is the technology we want to be on new supercars.” Will you make more special models like the Monza? “We want to segment our offering into four pillars: GT, sports cars, Icona (icons) and Special Series. Icona (where the Monza sits) will be a line of cars. “Monza is not the only one. We have a few we discuss. It’s a big success for us, Monza. There are less technical constraints with these cars. To drive Monza is like driving a

Mercedes-AMG unveils 2021 GLE 53 Coupe
2021 Mercedes-AMG GL# 53 CoupeHandout / Mercedes-Benz Blurring the lines of vehicle segments has been a Mercedes hallmark ever since they dropped the Hammer on an unsuspecting sedan-buying public. Crossover coupes, which arent really coupes at all, take that blurring of lines to the next level. The newest entrant to this increasingly crowded field? The 2021 GLE 53 Coupe. Pardon us while we check our calendars.Of course, the 53 bears no relation to its actual engine size, which is a 3.0-litre inline-six making a healthy 429 horsepower. Juicing the works is 48-volt technology, part of its EQ Boost system and delivering an additional 21 horses and 184lb.-ft of torque. Combustion torque peaks at 384lb.-ft., while the run to 100 km/h from rest is yours in just 5.3 seconds. 2021 Mercedes-AMG GLE 53 Coupe Tied to this powerplant is the AMG Speedshift nine-speed automatic transmission, a unit which can be shifted via steering wheel paddles or simply left in D like Pops Vistacruiser. Power is sent to all corners via Mercedes 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive system, assuring this thing will cling to corners like a frightened cat to a wool blanket. As a crossover ‘coupe’, this GLE 53 prioritizes pace (and looks) over space, meaning theres a whole lot more sport than utility in the interior. Its fastback shape cleaves several cubic feet from the cargo area in the name of style, while high-contrast color options jack the visual drama to eleven and beyond. We prefer this new Mercedes design language to anything built by Affalterbach in recent memory. 2021 Mercedes-AMG GLE 53 Coupe Spotting a GLE 53 Coupe wont be difficult, thanks to AMG-specific features like sporty air outlets, a front splitter-type feature, and several superfluous louvers. The newly redesigned rear bumper features AMG details like a diffuser and round twin tailpipe finishers. A special Night Package blacks out most of the chrome, if youre into that type of look.Active Ride Control is also an option, featuring two independently operating electro-mechanical actuators at the front and rear axle. This system reduces body roll when cornering and allows more precise control of cornering properties and load change characteristics. It can balance out one-sided bumps, a feature that will surely please Miss

Fore! Next-gen Volkswagen Golf almost ready for production
The new Golf – still camouflaged The Volkswagen Golf nameplate has been around for 45 years, popping up in family driveways and autocross courses alike in a variety of body styles over that time. This year will see the introduction of its eighth-generation, with VW promising a digital, intelligent, and connected new car.By way of a camouflaged teaser image, the company has announced that development work on the Gen 8 Golf has entered the final testing phase. While the black-and-white wrap confuses our eyes as to its details, theres no mistaking this for anything other than a Golf a two box hatchback design houses five doors and a familiar set of peepers. Fans should expect a sharpened and modernized version of the current car, in other words.Close examination of this testing mule reveals little, save for the round dots of forward-facing parking sensors embedded into its front fascia. That feature currently shows up in high-zoot Golfs in this country. Its fuel filler door is in roughly the same location as the existing Golf but is of a slightly different shape on this test car. Headlights are of a different shape than the Gen 7 car, cutting slightly upwards as they meet the grille instead of following those bodylines as they do today. Keyless entry nubs pepper the door handles and some sort of forward-facing camera presumably for driver aids is perched above the rearview mirror. As expected, the stern German behind the wheel reveals nothing.Klaus Bischoff, head of Volkswagen Design, says At this time, we will not disclose all details of the new Golf but you can already perceive its elegant proportions, before going on to exhort that The next generation will be a genuine eye-catcher.The countdown to the debut of number eight has already begun the new Golf will celebrate its world introduction this

Yes, now Pagani’s mulling over building an SUV
The 2019 Pagani Huayra BC RoadsterNicholas Maronese Pagani, the Italian maker of hand-crafted hypercars with psychotic levels of performance, is, yes, reportedly thinking about building an SUV. According to an interview with Horacio Pagani himself on the digital pages of AutoCar, its a topic which has been discussed a number of times with collectors. In other news, pigs have learned to fly and old Alfas have suddenly become reliable daily drivers. We kid we should have known this development was coming, of course. Porsche, with the Cayenne, arguably opened the floodgates on the idea of a sports-car maker building SUVs. Now, theres a whole market full of stilt-wearing all-wheel-drive rigs from the likes of Bentley and Lamborghini.Still, we shouldnt fault the man for listening to his customers. After all, if the outrageously wealthy are asking him for a Pagani SUV to match their Zonda and Huayra, he would be silly to say no. Projects such as these pave the way for future car development, often with cubic acres of dollar bills.Pagani goes on to say that an SUV from the company that bears his surname would likely have a price tag in the neighbourhood of 3 million Euros ($4.4 million). They would access the technology of Mercedes-Benz a logical statement given the relationship between the two companies and maybe use the big SUV platform. A Pagani SUV based on a G-Wagen and stuffed with a V12 might not be so bad after all. The next hypercar from Pagani, set to replace the spellcheck-vexing Huayra, is scheduled to appear in the calendar year 2022. At its outset, the car will deploy a familiar Mercedes-AMG V12 twin-turbo, eschewing hybrid technology until a later time. In fact, Pagani said in the Autocar interview that the mighty V12 will be homologated until 2026, which is great news for gearheads who enjoy a screaming exhaust note.A move to electrification is on the horizon, of course, as only the most tone-deaf automaker would refuse to recognize consumer trends. Pagani is possibly the least tone-deaf CEO on the planet, so it makes sense that future hypercars from the brand will have some electrons in their

Un-camouflaged new Land Rover Defender maybe spied shooting next ‘James Bond’
If the internet is good for anything, its for giving us sneak peeks at new cars long before they go on sale. The latest leak thats causing consternation at a PR office? The new and hotly-anticipated 2020 Land Rover Defender.Spied on the set of a new James Bond flick is what appears to be a completely undisguised copy of the upcoming British 44.It has a lantern jaw harkening back to Defenders of old, along with what is certainly chequerplate on the flanks of its hood. This latter detail is a great throwback to the Defender 90 and 110. View this post on Instagram I’m not going to get in trouble for this — because it’s all over #facebook at the moment! Here is what looks like the first uncovered #defender2020 — straight (apparently) from the film set of the new #bond movie! Makes sense! A few things come to mind. Firstly, the winch is excellent. Secondly, the alpine windows are still there! Thirdly, the rear passenger door looks massive — you’ll never open that in a Tesco car park! Fourthly, there seems to be quite a bit of wheel clearance (though it’s unknown if this is standard height, off road height, or on coils!). Fifthly, checker on the bonnet (yes, the bonnet is a funny shape and there is no real wing to speak of). Sixthly, I’m not sure about the mirrors at all. Seventhly. well, this could clearly go on a bit! #landroverdefender #allnewdefender #landroverdefender #landrover #thebest4x4xfar #landrovertheworldover #landroverworld #bignews #didntmakefrankfurt #someonesheadwillrollforthis #spyshot #spyfilm #jamesbondfilmset #allnewdefender2020 #newdefender #newdefendernews #newlandroverdefender #defender #landroverdefender #landroverdefender110 #defender110 #defender130 #defender90 #allnewdefender90 #allnewdefender110 #newdefender2020 #newdefender90 A post shared by Steven Firth (@shedlocktwothousand) on Aug 26, 2019 at 3:14pm PDTIts front fascia is understandably not as squared-off as the old Defender, thanks largely to pedestrian safety standards and the fact that automakers no longer design their cars to look like barn doors.Round headlights set into rectangular buckets are a nice touch but, at least from this angle, appear to have the top quarter of those lamps tucked out of sight. This gives it a sleepy appearance, as if it just consumed a dime bag. Perhaps other angles will be better. The windshield is fairly upright, as one would expect, and various rugged off-road design cues pepper the exterior. There is a huge wheelwell gap, suggesting this version might be equipped with an air suspension jacked to its highest setting. Or, it may simply have metal coils modified for movie use. Appropriately knobby tires are present and accounted for. With the world clamoring for SUVs of all types, its a sensible time for Land Rover to reintroduce this well-loved nameplate. Defender fans are, um, ardent (to put it mildly) so the design will surely be criticized no matter what the final production versions looks like. Three- and five-door variants are expected when it goes on sale for the 2020 model

Ferdinand Piech, who brought Porsche to Volkswagen, dies at 82
This September 2013 file photo shows Volkswagen group supervisory board chairman Ferdinand Piech, right, as he listens to Volkswagen AG CEO Martin Winterkorn during the media day of the IAA (Internationale Automobil Ausstellung) international motor show in Frankfurt am Main, western Germany. Ferdinand Piech, the former chairman and chief executive officer who transformed Volkswagen into one of the worlds biggest carmakers and added Porsche to its holdings, has died. He was 82. He died Sunday at a hospital in Bavaria, Germany, according to Bild newspaper. The Vienna-born grandson of Ferdinand Porsche, who founded the manufacturer of the 911 sports car, became Volkswagens CEO in 1993, when the Wolfsburg, Germany-based company was mired in losses.Plagued with quality problems and high costs, Volkswagen became profitable, producing better vehicles without large-scale job cuts, while Piech won the allegiance of unions and shareholders alike. He continued to guide strategy after becoming supervisory board chairman in 2002, but his crowning achievement at VW was the acquisition of the Porsche auto brand in 2012.Under Piech, Volkswagen pushed into high-end autos with the purchase of the Bentley and Bugatti nameplates. At the same time, he tightened VWs integration of the mass-market Seat and Skoda brands. By the end of 2012, Volkswagen either owned outright or held controlling stakes in 12 vehicle brands, including supercar producer Lamborghini, heavy-truck makers MAN and Scania and motorcycle maker Ducati. His obsession with cars and the desire to make the best possible ones, regardless of price also cost VW a lot of money. With the flopped Phaeton sedan, the Bugatti Veyron supercar and Audis A2 hatchback, the Volkswagen group accounts for three out of the 10 biggest money-losers in modern automotive history, according to estimates from Max Warburton, an analyst for Sanford C. Bernstein Co. Thats the worst track record in the industry.Enjoying a cult-like following within the company, Piech often got his way when he lost confidence in managers, forcing out a series of executives, including his hand-picked successor as CEO, Bernd Pischetsrieder, in 2006. The supervisory boards leadership committee surprisingly defied him in April 2015 by saying it would vote to extend Martin Winterkorns contract as CEO, against Piechs wishes. Piech resigned as chairman later that month. If I want to achieve something, I approach the problem and push it through without realizing whats happening around me, he wrote in his 2002 autobiography. My desire for harmony is limited. Piech came from a technical background, having studied engineering at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich. In 1963, Piech went to work for his uncle Ferry at Porsche in Stuttgart, where he later became a technical manager.Piech joined Volkswagen in 1972, when he moved to Audi from Porsche after the family decided to end its active role in the sports-car makers operations. At Audi, he pushed the development of the Quattro all-wheel-drive system, helping establish the brand as an innovator and enabling it to overtake Daimlers Mercedes-Benz in global luxury-car sales in 2011.He had five children with his first wife, the former Corina von Planta; two from his relationship with Marlene Porsche, the former wife of his cousin Gerhard Porsche; three with Ursula Piech; and two other

Trump rejects new tariffs on Japan auto imports ‘at this moment’
US President Donald Trump speaks with reporters as he departs the White House, in Washington, DC, on June 2, 2019. (Jim Watson / Getty Images President Donald Trump says he is not at this moment considering fresh tariffs on imported autos and parts from Japan that he has threatened, citing an agreement in principle with Japan on trade announced over the weekend. Its one of the reasons we made the deal, Trump said in a press conference at the conclusion of the G-7 summit in France. Its something I could do at a later date if I wanted to but were not looking at that. We just want to be treated fairly. The threat of steep new U.S tariffs on imported automobiles and components has loomed over the auto industry and major U.S. trading partners since the the U.S. Commerce Department in February found those imports could impair national security.Trump backed that finding in May, but delayed imposing new levies on the sector through at least mid-November to allow U.S. negotiators to pursue trade deals with Japan and the European Union.Trump had earlier said there would be no change to U.S. tariffs on Japanese autos after he and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe announced an agreement-in-principle over the weekend. During the press conference Monday, Trump also said the U.S. is very close to reaching a trade pact with the European Union, citing the specter of additional levies of up to 25 per cent on imported autos as a reason why.We made a great deal with Japan and were very close to maybe making a deal with the EU, because they dont want tariffs, its very simple. They dont want to tax cars, Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Trump said. I think were going to make a deal with the EU without having to go that route. I may have to go that route but maybe

Pickup Comparison: 2019 Ford F-150 Limited vs. GMC Sierra Denali
Eighty grand is a lot of dough. Enough to buy three Honda Civics, a cottage lot in Northern Ontario, a down payment on a triplex in Calgary. Or the money could go toward one of the most luxurious pickups on the market today the 2019 GMC Sierra Denali or 2019 Ford F-150 Limited. Ram, too, has an expensive truck, of course, one with a better interior than either the Ford or GM; but this test is between the two top guns of the Big Three, the Denali and the Limited.Ford steps into the ring at a disadvantage right from the start: Its F-150 is starting to show age after a complete refresh of the truck in 2015 when it went to an all-aluminum body, followed by a mild update for 2018, while GMCs top-line truck presents with an all-new design and parts. The Sierra Denali is definitely the shiny new toy here, and it looks the part with a Great Chrome Shark mouth grille, more blingy chrome bits all around, 22-inch wheels and a trick, MultiPro tailgate that expands on what a tailgate can do. The Ford suffers a little because it looks similar to so many other F-150s, the dandelion of the pickup truck world, demarcated only by equally big wheels, subtle metallic grille and only some Limited badging here and there.Under the hoods, these pickups could not have more different approaches to power: Ford has diverted a bunch of 3.5-litre high-output Raptor engines from the assembly line to enhance the appeal of the top-line Limited. As such, the Limiteds turbo V6 trumps the Sierra for pure grunt, delivering 450 horsepower and 510 lb.-ft. of torque funnelled through the same 10-speed automatic used in the Sierra. The Denali, on the other hand, uses a good ol fashioned V8. Its 6.2-litre returns 420 horsepower and 460 lb.-ft. But heres the surprising part: Despite the Ford having more power and being about four-tenths of a second quicker to 96 km/h than the GM, according to Car and Driver, the Denali simply feels and sounds better overall. Oh sure, the Raptor V6 is quick, and it sounds throaty and meaty, but its just not as juicy as the V8. While both engines are smooth, even at wide-open-throttle, the Denalis 6.2 is chocolate cheesecake to Fords apple pie, delivering a richer experience. Thanks to the direct injection and Dynamic Fuel Management, which can shut down any number of cylinders to optimize power delivery and efficiency, the Denalis fuel economy was impressive, too, though it did fall short of the Ford overall. While a low of 10 L/100 km was registered on the highway in the Denali, our overall average was 13.1, while the Ford registers 12.6 overall but 11.2 highway close enough that neither of these trucks is more efficient than the other at the end of the day. That might not matter much anyway considering the cost of entry here. Both have automatic 4WD systems in addition to 2H, 4H and 4L.Where the Ford pulls ahead is in towing prowess, the F-150 able to haul up to 13,000 pounds with the proper package and set up, compared to the Sierras 9,300. Earning back some practicality in the face of outright muscle, the Sierra Denalis ProGrade trailering system and its comprehensive suite of trailering aides edges out those on the Ford, predictable given that the Sierra has newer technology. Both trucks have similar payloads close to 2,300 pounds and both ride very well, the quietness in each truck a testament to the amount of sound deadening and noise cancelling. Rough roads are, perhaps, somewhat better absorbed in the Denali, and its body exhibited less shake and shudder. The box of the Sierra is superior, too, having been widened roughly seven inches for a volume of 62.9 cubic feet on its 5-foot, 8-inch bed, compared to the 5-foot, 5-inch bed in Ford. The Denali bed can even be optioned in carbon fibre. But Ford has better LED cargo lighting because the bed lights are activated with a button inside the bed instead of a switch in the cab. As for tailgates, Fords fold-out step is okay, but the MultiPro twin gate is simply superior. The only hitch (pardon the pun) is the need to remove any ball hitch for the MultiPro before using it as a step, which would be a pain for those of us who leave hitches in regularly (and, no, its not against the law in most provinces to leave them in.) To prevent damage, the electronic tailgate will not drop the upper half if it detects a hitch in the receiver. GMs bumper steps are equally brilliant and can be used instead.GMs seat-mounted storage cubbies in the Denali are also useful, as are the storage bins under the rear seats, but Fords rear seats lift up to create a wide open area inside the cab, which can be useful for carrying big objects or, for contractors, lots of tools. Neither of these trucks is better, per se, in the back seat area, although the front seats in the Ford Limited clearly win for comfort and a massage function. One sit and youll be sold on these seats. Fords Limited also gets a massive, panoramic sunroof as opposed to a traditional sunroof in the

Haggle-free, ‘contactless’ car vending machine appears in London
What do bags of chips, overpriced headphones and cars have in common? Theyre all available from vending machines, of course. Well, if you live in London, at least.AutoTrader UK has just set up shop at Spitalfields Market in a tony area of the city, stocking the countrys first car vending machine with a Renault Zoe. For those not in the loop, the Zoe is a compact electric car, and one of Renaults hottest tickets right now.Unlike your local dealer yknow, the kind where you generally need to negotiate the price of a new cars across the desk from a salesman aching to meet a quota this vending machine is strictly a no-haggle zone. AutoTrader set the Zoes price at 16,000 (approximately $26,000 Canadian). This compares very favourably against the cars reported actual sticker, some ten grand higher. Incentives are a wonderful things. As with most everything else in this life, shoppers can pay for their freshly vended Renault with their phone. It took about twelve weeks for six engineers to design and build the machine, which includes a custom key release function.Reports dont specify if the vending doors spring open automatically upon payment or if the purchaser gets to open them dramatically as if they are uncovering a Lamborghini barn find.Perhaps unsurprisingly, this marketing effort was spurred by a study that indicated about half of those surveyed disliked negotiating the price of a new car purchase. An electric car was chosen for this experiment thanks to over three-quarters of Brits believing only hybrid and all-electric cars should be allowed to drive in London thanks to pollution concerns.Heres hoping the car inside this vending machine doesnt get snagged on the dispenser like the last chocolate bar your author tried to
