Alfa Romeo recalling Stelvio, Giulia over optimistic fuel gauges

2018 Alfa Romeo Giulia QuadrifoglioDerek McNaughton / Driving Alfa Romeo is recalling almost new 22,000 Stelvio crossovers and Giulia sedans, including 935 in Canada, because the fuel gauges could indicate theres more gas tank in the tank than there really is.Model year 2018 and 2019 cars and trucks are affected, specifically more than 11,000 Giulia sedans and more than 10,000 Stelvio SUVs in the U.S. Fewer than 1,000 cars are affected in Canada.Affected vehicles may suddenly stall when they run out of gasoline unexpectedly, increasing the risk of a crash. Italian owners of the cars and trucks found this out firsthand, and its how Alfa Romeo first learned of the issue, in fact.Faulty software in the vehicles means the fuel gauge may display one or two notches higher than actual; the issue is much more likely to show up if the car is parked for more than 30 minutes on a steep hill with a fuel tank filled between a half and three-quarters.When parked that long at an incline of more than 10 percent, the software will read the fuel level, assume the tank has been refilled, and re-calibrate itself incorrectly.Affected vehicles will have new software installed starting September

Volkswagen T-Roc Cabriolet is only mainstream convertible SUV

Volkswagen is carving itself a new niche with the unveiling of the T-Roc Cabriolet, the only mainstream crossover with a fully convertible roof.  Claimed to bring an “extroverted and emotive design” to the brand’s range, it indirectly replaces the Golf and Beetle cabriolets and will bear the burden of being the only drop-top Volkswagen for the foreseeable future. It’s due to go on sale early next year after a Frankfurt motor show public debut in September, with first deliveries in the spring.  Far from chopping the roof off a standard T-Roc, the cabriolet’s body and structure are mostly new, with 37mm added to the wheelbase and a 34mm increase in overall length. As well as the absence of rear doors and a unique rear-end design, there is structural strengthening in the underbody, windscreen frame, side panels, cross members and doors. Engineers are confident that it would achieve a similar five-star score as the hard-top T-Roc in Euro NCAP crash tests.  The soft-top itself features a mechanism similar in concept to the outgoing Golf Cabriolet’s, with the roof stowing in an exposed compartment above the boot rather than under a panel. This allows it to be one of the fastest-opening roofs on sale, retracting in just nine seconds via a switch on the centre console or the key at vehicle speeds of up to 19mph.  The T-Roc Cabriolet’s roof design is also space efficient, allowing for two usable rear seats with enough leg and head room for six-footers to be comfortable on short journeys and a well-shaped 284-litre boot (161 litres down on the standard crossover). VW claims noise levels are kept low by specially developed door and roof seals.  Only two engines, both petrol, will be offered with the cabriolet at launch: a 113bhp 1.0-litre three-cylinder engine and a 148bhp 1.5-litre four-cylinder unit. The 1.0 has a six-speed manual only, but the 1.5 can be mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic.  VW has yet to release official performance and efficiency figures or confirm the kerb weight of either variant. There are no plans for diesel engines to be offered.  Two trims – Design and R-Line – will be available in the UK. Options will include a wind deflector, mounted over the rear seats, that stows in its own compartment under the boot floor. Prices will be announced next year, but bosses claim it will start from “well under” £30,000.  QA with Jurgen Stackmann, VW board member for sales, marketing, aftersales There’s lots of talk about this car being an expression of Volkswagen’s emotive side, rather than a pure business decision. Is that the case?  “The concept only has reason to exist because of that. The convertible is the ultimate expression of emotional mobility. It’s got lost in the last few years. The (sales) momentum for convertibles is over. “The opportunity to combine what people really want now – a C-UV (C-segment utility vehicle) – with a cabriolet that has a long-standing tradition in the Volkswagen brand was a great opportunity. For us, it had to look good, so we decided after seeing the first prototype to build it. From a rational side, you would never go into the cabriolet market.”  Will this be the only convertible model from Volkswagen that we’ll be seeing for now?  “Purely from a convertible point of view, that’s our car. It’s meant to please customers in the UK and Germany (the two biggest drop-top markets). If there’s anything ‘open’, it’ll be very different. It’ll be things we’ve discussed like the ID Buggy.”  Will you do an R version of the T-Roc Cabriolet?  “R is about high power, high performance and four-wheel drive, and we don’t think any of those are right for this. It would have very limited appeal on the market, so we

Fisker wants to enter the electric pickup field, too

If you captain an electric car company, you get to announce stuff by social media. Those are the rules, apparently. The latest to exercise their right to bypass the PR department with a major announcement is Henrik Fisker, self-proclaimed “Husband, Father, Risk taking, innovation loving, protocol challenging designer entrepreneur who turns dreams into reality, never gives up” and the founder and CEO of the U.S. EV startup Fisker Automotive, who recently Tweeted out a photo of a mystery electric pickup truck. “ALL automotive segments have to be electrified! After our Fisker electric SUV, we have already decided on our next 2 EV’s on the same platform!” Tweeted Fisker.ALL automotive segments have to be electrified ! Elon has Tweet-confirmed the upcoming arrival of the Tesla pickup truck, Rivian is cooking up its own American-made challenger with the R1T, and now Ford has unveiled an electric F-150 capable of towing a 1-million-pound train. There are no further details about the Fisker pickup truck, but Henrik teasedthe ‘affordable’ US$40,000 electric SUV on his Facebook page with an image and a promise to unveil it fully in December. Perhaps alongside a pickup prototype? Better hurry. The competition is growing.

Bugatti mulling over SUV, 500-km/h Chiron variant

The Bugatti Galibier 16C ConceptHandout / Bugatti Bugatti said a while ago an SUV wasn’t in the cards. But times, they are a-changing, with an interview with Volkswagen boss Stephen Winkelmann revealing the premium automakers got a crossover utility at the ready and may be planning to build an even faster Chiron.Automobile Magazine sat down with Winkelmann to discuss the future of the storied brand and its forthcoming projects, and apparently the prospect of an SUV joining the lineup is very real. The design is done. Some potential customers have seen it, and they liked it. One or two influential people up in Wolfsburg were complimentary about it, Winkelmann said of what could become Bugattis second product beside the Chiron. But at this point there is no budget and no decision. The decision to make an SUV instead of an all-electric hypercar comes from demand, and a lack of a high-performance, high-end luxury CUV. The refusal to consider an all-electric hypercar also comes from battery technology being relatively young not good enough for a Bugatti yet, Winkelmann says. The CUV will definitely have some sort of electrification, however. Most Bugatti models are ultra-exclusive, and the CUV will be no different, but the body count wont be as low as the Chirons. Winkelmann says were not talking 100 cars a year here, but 600 to 800.As for the Chiron itself, its not going anywhere soon, with Winkelmann saying it will be another five years before the finishing touches are put on the evolution of the vehicle. That evolution might encompass a 500-km/h version, as well as an open-topped variant though likely not in the same

Mercedes-AMG’s One hypercar reportedly delayed two years

Mercedes-AMG Project OneHandout / Mercedes-Benz The F1-derived Mercedes-AMG One hypercar will reportedly see first deliveries pushed back from this year to 2021, according to a new report, due to complications with its high-revving engine. The powertrain behind the One is a 1.6-litre V6 paired to an electric turbocharger and working alongside an electric motor.A second electric motor on the crankshaft is meant to work as another power-adder, and then theres an electric motor on each front wheel. The package as a whole is more complex than Mercedes-AMG engineers first thought itd be, says reporting from Germanys Auto Motor und Sport, with the problem relating specifically to emissions; and to adapting some of the engines F1-derived technologies to the street.(For example, in the cars Formula One equivalent, the oil is typically heated before the engine is even started something not too feasible for a street car.)Customers who were thinking of forking over 3 million Euros ($4.5 million) for the One will apparently have to twiddle their thumbs for another two years, now, before the car shows up in their driveway. It sounds like itll be worth the

Updated Rezvani Tank now packs 1,000 horsepower

Looking for all the world like an extra out of Demolition Man, the Rezvani Tank is a brute of a machine designed for either quashing a dissident uprising or tooling around Beverly Hills. While it is surely capable of the former, one look at the promotional videos on the brands homepage assures us the Tank will be used for the latter.Rezvani is a company based out of Orange County in California, so that revelation should not be a surprise.Previously available with a Pentastar V6 or SRTs 6.4-litre mill, reports have surfaced the updated Rezvani will offer yet another engine one which cranks out 1,000 horsepower. Itll be called the Tank X, and it can be yours for a mere $349,000.While the press bumf loudly touts the 1,000-hp figure, this isnt the Hellephant engine Mopar introduced at SEMA last year. The company specifies this mill is a 6.2-litre Supercharged V8 Demon. Those with long memories an elephant never forgets, right? will recall the enormous 426-cubic-inch Mopar monster displaces an even 7.0 litres. A six-speed automatic is the Tank Xs only option.A quick perusal of Rezvanis build-and-price tool reveals the $349,000 sticker price to simply be a starting point for financial hilarity. Adding a Dana 60 rear end costs $8,500 while automatic side steps are another $2,500. Thermal night vision, perfect for tracking down pesky infidels, adds $6,500 to the invoice. After learning Rezvani charges an eye-popping $12,500 for a six-inch lift kit, your author decided he is definitely in the wrong business. For fun, we went through the configurator and checked every box, including the ones for a $6,500 starry night headliner and $7,500 auxiliary gas tank. Total price? $429,585.Checking in at 84 inches wide and 190 inches long, the Rezvani Tank X puts down a footprint roughly that of a Jeep Wrangler Unlimited, albeit one that is ten inches wider than stock. Its about ten inches taller than a Wrangler as well, so watch that low bridge. Truth be told, the new Wrangler JL does form the basis of this beast, explaining the design changes to this 2020 model compared to last years tank, which used the old JK Wrangler as its starting point.By the way, this thing is packed with bulletproof armouring and EMP protection, meaning youll still be able to drive to your secret lair after the attack. Toyota Supra will see higher-performance trims

2020 Toyota SupraHandout / Toyota The Toyota Supra hasnt even reached its final form, according to Tetsuya Tada, the boss behind the sports cars revival, with several higher-performance trims planned for the model. In an interview with Autoblog, Tada talked about the development of the Supra, and the steps planned to make it an even more formidable force in the sports car world. In the early stages of the project, BMWs then-CEO Herbert Diess, now head of Volkswagen, wanted to create an i8 successor, but Tada wanted a real sports car. Talks resumed with BMW wanting to build a lazy and comfortable cruiser out of the Z4, but Tada urged the Germans to push the joint effort into serious sports car territory. The BMW is still the lazier driving vehicle of the two, even with 382 horsepower at the disposal of your right foot. According to Tada, the Supra was always devised as a serious sports car, and hell do everything he can to make it as good as it can be.He also confirmed 335 horsepower wont be the end of the road. With a sports car, the promise is to offer more performance with each additional version, Tada said, adding we can expect to see a new additional version almost every year.Unfortunately there will still be no manual transmission option, with Tada saying Customers who want a manual should choose the Toyota 86. Again, this is likely due to development costs, and with the small sports car market already being fairly niche, its hard for even the largest automakers to offer a manual transmission in such a low volume

Report: Jaguar’s two new small SUVs to be BMW-based

Jaguar E-Pace Cub graphicJaguar Jaguar is building two more small SUVs under the -Pace name to fit under the E-Pace, according to new reports, and those new trucks could see a BMW chassis underneath.According to Autocar, there will be two variants: a standard SUV style; and a crossover coupe with a sloping fastback roof. The SUV will be visually related to the I-Pace, but be smaller and lower than the E-Pace, Jaguars best-seller. The coupe could be related to BMWs X2, thanks to a growing partnership between the brands. The relationship between Jaguar and BMW has already gotten pretty deep, with plans for the Bavarian brand to share four- and six-cylinder engines with the British.JLR doesnt have a hybrid platform for the future, and with CO2 fleet emission regulations tightening in 2025, its running out of time, but the budding partnership with BMW could change that as well. The new SUVs possibly named A-Pace and B-Pace will likely ride on a platform that BMW is sharing with JLR known as FAAR. Currently underpinning the new BMW 1 Series, it can handle gasoline, hybrid and fully-electric powertrains. As for the styling, the 2003 R-D6 hatchback concept might lend a few cues here and there. On top of the new Jaguars, there are also rumours a more budget-minded Land Rover will be released based on the classic looks of the Defender. Its possible the smaller SUV could bring back the Freelander name, and will be more urban-focused. The Land Rover could also be priced from 24,000 ($38,300), which would make it more accessible to a larger
