BMW’s 2021 electric ix3 will boast 286 hp and 354-km range

BMW iX3 conceptHandout / BMW BMWs upcoming ix3 electric crossover will offer 286 horsepower and an estimated 354 km of battery range per charge when it goes on sale in Canada in 2020, the automaker said mid-December.The SUV will be the first in a long line of new EVs launched by the brand next decade, and will essentially be an electric version of its X3 crossover.Powering the iX3 will be BMWs fifth-generation electric powertrain technology, fed by a 74-kWh lithium-ion battery pack; the electric motors should deliver about 286 horsepower and 295 lb.-ft. of torque. The battery, transmission and motor are all built into one housing to keep the unit compact. The motor powers the rear wheels only, but an all-wheel-drive variant will likely drop later on. Range will likely be rated by the EPA at about 220 miles per charge (354 km). BMW says it will purchase the lithium and cobalt for the batteries directly from mining companies instead of third parties, and that the components that power the iX3 will be produced in-house as well. The motors will also be produced without the use of rare-earth metals. While BMW has been experimenting with grille designs, the iX3 will feature a classic double-kidney-bean grille befitting of a traditional BMW, even if thats what it aint. The brand even developed sensors that can see through chrome just so it could throw the trademark-style grille on the fascia. The iX3 will begin production in 2020 in China, where it will be assembled under contract by state-owned automaker Brilliance; thisll make it the first North-American-market BMW to wear a made in China label. That launch date also puts it ahead of the Mercedes-Benz EQC in making it to market in North

The 2021 Porsche Macan GTS now makes 375 hp and tops out at 261 km/h

Porsches Macan GTS is back for 2020 after a three-year hiatus, and now it has more power, more tech and a slightly higher price.Powering the GTS is a 2.9-litre twin-turbocharged V6 making 375 horsepower and 383 lb.-ft. of torque. With a PDK transmission and the Sport Chrono package, the small crossover can accelerate from zero to 100 km/h in just 4.7 seconds, some 0.3 seconds faster than the previous Macan GTS.Top speed is now a rule-breaking 261 km/h.The standard GTS comes with Porsche Air Suspension, which includes Active Suspension Management tech, and the vehicle has been lowered by 25 millimetres for better handling. The exterior has changed slightly, and features a revised fascia, new front and rear trim with side skirts and LED headlights and taillights. Cast-iron brakes with painted red calipers are standard, but carbon-compsite brakes are an available option. A set of 20-inch RS Spyder Design wheels round out the exterior changes.Inside the Macan, the sporty theme is continued with a large instrument panel and infotainment screen. Alcantara adorns the centre panels of the eight-way adjustable sports seats, the centre console armrests and the door panels, and aluminum trim is found everywhere else. A GTS interior option is available that adds Carmine Red or Chalk stitching, as well as a Bose sound system and wireless charging. All this sportiness will cost a little bit more money than the previous model at $77,100 in Canada, its $4,000 more than it was in 2017. Deliveries should start summer

Cadillac’s 2021 Escalade will get a 38-inch-wide OLED dashboard

Everything about the Cadillac Escalade is big.The vehicle is physically huge, the wheels are large, the grille is vast, and the price will likely be massive as well.Cadilllac is now adding one more mega-feature to the luxury SUV, a humongous curved OLED screen that takes the place of the dashboard and the infotainment screen.Cadillac released a teaser video for the dashboard on Twitter mid-December.Straight lines are so last year. Introducing the first curved OLED in the industry, with over 38” diagonal of total display on the 2021 #Cadillac #Escalade. First look February 2020, available late 2020. pic.twitter.com/AoW4SvXhYA Cadillac (@Cadillac) December 16, 2019The screen spans 38 inches from the left side of the steering wheel to the midpoint of the centre console, and is curved behind the steering wheel. A plastic surround encompasses the gauge cluster, but but doesnt break up the OLED screen.Cadillac calls it an industry first, which is technically true, because Bytons electric SUV is still in the startup phase otherwise, it would take the crown with its 48-inch display. Cadillac also says the display has twice the pixel density of a 4K television, with perfect blacks and the largest color range available in the automotive industry. I guess they think were going to watch Dunkirk on this thing, but nonetheless, thats pretty damn impressive. No other details were mentioned, so were just going to have to wait until our first look of the vehicle in February of 2020. VW proactively preps the Atlas for a 2021 styling update

Volkswagens new Atlas has been selling very well for the brand, and the large three-row SUV also wins points for being an unapologetically boxy truck, which we like. However, despite the fact it hasnt been on the market very long, the automakers preemptively planning a mild facelift for the thing for 2021, adding more sporty elements to the family-hauler.The front end treatment takes the traditional square styling of the Atlas, and injects it with some cues from the Jetta that is to say, it gets slimmer headlights and a wider, more triangular grille. The rear end remains almost exactly the same, save for the internals of the taillights. The boxy flares are, thankfully, still present, helping retain the Atlas signature look.Currently, the Atlas is powered by either a 2.0-lire turbocharged four-cylinder or a 3.6-liter V-6. The engines make 235 and 276 horsepower, respectively, and are both sent to the wheels via an eight-speed automatic transmission. It isnt clear whether or not VW would change, or add any other powerplants for the 2021 model year. The interior is also an unknown at this point, but thats one element were sure will be updated when the time comes. The automaker has said that new electronic driver-assistance features will be added, so well keep an eye out for those. The 2021 Atlas could debut at the 2020 Chicago Auto Show in February, but its also possible that it

First Look: 2021 Chevrolet Suburban and Tahoe

2021 Chevrolet Tahoe RSTDerek McNaughton DETROIT, MichiganThe Chevrolet Suburban the SUV that stamped the segment into existence some 85 years ago is finally moulting its 2014 body and frame, replacing it with a roomier, more technologically advanced and seriously more comfortable three-row utility that takes inspiration from the new Chevy Silverado. The favourite SUV of law enforcement, governments and big families everywhere, the 2021 Suburban and Chevrolet Tahoe debuted in Detroit Tuesday with all-new exteriors, a new platform and substantially revised interiors, offering much more cargo space along with better access to the third row.Perhaps the biggest change, however, is underneath. Riding on GMs T1 platform, the two Chevrolets say goodbye to a solid rear axle that has been a hallmark of these vehicles for decades. While the solid axle gave these body-on-frame SUVs great towing ability, it also meant a noticeable truck-like ride and loss of cargo space, not to mention high load floor. A new, independent rear suspension with optional Air Ride Adaptive Suspension on all four corners, lowers the cargo deck more than five inches, frees up cargo space and provides a massive improvement in the driving characteristics of this full-size rig. On a quick and short ride-along at GMs Milford Proving Grounds, the 2021 Tahoe with air suspension and Magnetic Ride Control felt seriously well-composed over rough roads for a vehicle that has grown in wheelbase and overall length. For those Tahoes and Suburbans without air ride, a standard shock-and-coil-spring set-up underpins the ride, while Magnetic Ride Control is available on other up-level trims. The air suspension is an open system with a compressor in the rear and air drier along with 7-litre storage tank. It can raise the SUV two inches for off-road travel, or lower it another two for ease of entry. The Tahoe sees, perhaps, the biggest improvement, growing almost seven inches in overall length, gaining three inches of legroom in the second row, and more than 10 inches in the third. Maximum cargo jumps from 94.7 cubic feet to just shy of 123, almost enough to fit two fridges inside. The Suburbans maximum cargo grows to a cavernous 144.7 enough to embarrass a minivan. For the first time, Tahoe and Suburbans second-row seats slide fore and aft, moving 10 inches forward or rearward. Second- and third-row seats also fold more easily. Engine choices also expand. The previous Suburban and Tahoe offered a 5.3-litre EcoTec V8 with 355 horsepower or a 6.2L EcoTec V8 with 420 hp; the new units get those same engines plus the addition of the diesel that just debuted in the Silverado and Sierra pickups. Both gas engines feature Dynamic Fuel Management, with more than 12 modes of cylinder deactivation. The 6.2 comes standard on the new High Country trim. All three engines are mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission. The diesel, however a 3.0L in-line six that produces 277 horsepower but a whopping 460 lb.-ft. of torque is as smooth as it is quiet, with remarkable efficiency to boot, likely giving Tahoe and Suburban the best fuel economy in the segment that includes the Ford Expedition, Nissan Armada and a few others. Later, the Silverado and Sierras 2.7-litre turbocharged four-cylinder with 310 horsepower is also expected to be available for fleet buyers.Inside, the interior takes evolutionary steps with a standard 10-inch colour infotainment screen. With electronic buttons for gears replacing the old column stalk shifter, the interior is far more modern without looking instantly dated like the interiors of the pickups. <img src="/uploads/img/auto-news/44-first-look-2021-chevrolet-suburban-and-tahoe.jpg" alt="First

First Drive: 2021 Audi RS 6 Avant

2021 Audi RS 6 AvantBrian Harper / Driving MALIBU, Calif. To a casual observer, the view from the second-floor patio of the Surfrider Hotel provides a glimpse of the state of personal mobility in and through Malibu, home to many of Hollywoods elite and featuring some of the most desirable and expensive property in the state. Directly below the patio is the Pacific Coast Highway (better known as the PCH, or more formally, State Route 1), this four-lane stretch of tarmac through the city sees almost as many Porsches as Priuses, with Teslas clearly the wheels of choice for a good percentage of the moneyed locals. The occasional Rolls-Royce glides by, ditto Maseratis, Range Rovers, Volvo SUVs and various models of Mercedes, among far more proletarian product. But not a single Audi RS 6 Avant until today.A rare ride even in Europe, where the ber-sportswagen has achieved iconic status among the performance cognoscenti, the RS 6 Avant will finally reach North American shores in late 2020, a year after it shows up in Europe. Replete with Audis highly regarded Quattro all-wheel drive system, an eight-speed automatic transmission, and a twin-turbocharged 4.0-litre V8 with a 48-volt mild hybrid system and 592 politically incorrect horsepower, the sleek yet muscular Avant wears sheet metal no crossover or SUV can out-sexy. A family hauler for the Fast and Furious set? Or, considering the venue, the ultimate surf woodie, minus the wood? Yes and yes! This Avant is the fourth-generation RS 6 for Europe and other markets, but the first generation Canadians will see. And Audi is not skimping on the features, loading up the wagon with all manner of performance and handling technologies, top-level infotainment and connectivity devices, and swaddling the cabin in appropriately tasteful materials and trims. Though Audi will not be limiting production, its cost will ensure exclusivity; pricing wont be finalized for Canada until closer to the cars arrival date, but Mercedes-AMGs 2020 E 63 S wagon the Audis closest rival starts at $120,000. So, judge accordingly. The RS 6 Avant isnt merely a hot rod version of the A6. With the exception of the front doors, roof and tailgate, the RS exterior is made up of RS-specific parts. In addition, the Avant has been widened around 40 millimetres on each side with flared wheel arches, the better to emphasize the meaty P285/30ZR22 Pirelli P-Zero tires and killer wheels. A power dome augments the hood, and the RS 6 adopts the front headlights from the A7 Sportback. Below the lights, side air inlets open on the bumper and extend almost into the lower edge of the headlights, the Avants designers taking their cue from the front end of the R8 sports car. The stylish rear end consists of a roof-edge spoiler and an RS-specific bumper with rear diffuser. In typical RS style, the exhaust system flows into chrome oval tailpipes, or in the case of the optional sport exhaust system highly recommended, by the way black tips. The bright Tango Red tester waiting for us was loaded with all the necessary equipment to scorch the twisting and undulating canyon roads feeding the PCH. RS Sport suspension with Dynamic Ride Control, replacing the standard adaptive air suspension? Check. Dynamic Package Plus, adding four-wheel steering, massive ceramic brakes, and jacks up the wagons top end to a super-illegal 305 km/h? Yep! Customizable drive modes to tailor the car to the road and the driver to the car? Thumbs up! Oh my, the gods of vehicular hooliganism do smile upon this beast. At just under five metres in length, the body style is clearly mid-sized wagon, but the power, acceleration, feel, and grip say five-seat sports car. Understand that some of these canyon roads Mulholland Highway, Stunt Road, and Decker, Latigo, and Malibu Canyons have been the holy grails for SoCal enthusiasts for decades; the RS 6 Avant is as adept at finessing these asphalt jungle gyms as the two Lamborghini Huracans we encountered on our runs. The cars four-wheel steering meant no full-lock heroics were needed on even the tightest decreasing-radius turns. The slightest touch of the brake pedal scrubbed off speed when needed, and the Audis ability to hold the intended line, regardless of speed or change of road direction, had both my co-driver and I swearing in disbelief. Punching the throttle pinned us both back in our seats Audi claims the 2,075-kilogram RS 6 Avant will hit 100 km/h from a standstill in 3.6 seconds honestly, it felt faster.Still, such behaviour is frowned upon by polite society as well as the local constabulary, meaning if you value your drivers licence, the RS 6 is more likely to be used as a grocery getter or for schlepping the kids to soccer practice. Its quite capable of being civil when doing so, but the one concern we discussed while cruising up the PCH in an air suspension-fitted model was that, despite occasional bumps and ripples, California roads are free of the

2021 Mercedes-Benz GLA teased in design sketch just ahead of reveal

Mercedes-Benz is teasing the next-generation GLA with a design sketch, just a day or so before the official release of the 2021 model.According to Mercedes-Benz, the new vehicle will be 10 centimetres taller than the previous model to give it more of a crossover appearance. It will also be 15 millimetres shorter, although Mercedes says legroom will not be impacted, since the length will be taken off the overhang. In fact, there will actually be more room, because the wheelbase has been lengthened. As far as styling goes, the sketch reveals, mostly, what weve come to expect of Benz crossovers. Were sure the pedestrian looks wont stop Mercedes-Benz from packing the vehicle full of tech, including the excellent MBUX infotainment system. At the very least, we know the rear bench seat will be unique, and feature a forward- or backward-sliding function, as well as 40/20/40-split capability. The wheels are huge, at least on the teaser drawing, in ironically stark contrast to recent reports Audi predicts 23-inch wheels should be about the largest fitted to production cars. Clearly, Mercedes stands with GM in forecasting 26-inch rims in the near-future.On top of the regular model, AMG 35 and 45/45S models are expected to be available, as well as a 250e plug-in hybrid model. The GLA will be revealed to the world online exclusively on December 11; the first auto show to feature it in the metal will be Genevas, in March of

The 2021 Hyundai Sonata N-Line is coming, but a full-fat N is not

2020 Hyundai SonataBrian Harper / Driving During our first drive of the next-generation Hyundai Sonata, we learned an N-Line version of the car would soon be coming to the lineup but also learned a full-blooded N performance model is not in the cards.I dont see it happening in the future; thats not our intention with the Sonata, Motor1 got a product planner to confirm on record. This makes perfect sense its a family sedan, not an all-out performance vehicle with track capabilities. Hitting the twisties is better left to other cars in Hyundais range, like the Veloster N, and sister company Kias Stinger. The still-sporty N-Line should be good enough for most people, especially since Hyundai plans to put a 2.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder under the hood, making 290 horsepower and 310 lb.-ft. of torque. All that power will be sent to the front wheels only, via an active torque vectoring system. For now, that powertrain will be exclusive to the Sonata N-Line. On top of the power upgrades, the N-Line will also look and sound the part, thanks to quad exhaust tips and 19-inch wheels, an upgrade from the 18-inch units on the standard Sonata. We drove the N-Line at the same time as the regular Sonata, but unfortunately, were not allowed to talk about it yet its still in camouflage mode. What do you think, is the N-Line enough for you? Or were you hoping for a full-blooded performance sedan from

Buick will become a crossover-only brand in 2021, killing off Regal

2018 Buick Regal GS Buick will kill off its Regal sedan in Canada after 2020, making the brands product range crossovers only for model year 2021, a spokesperson told magazine Motor Authority. The four-door will say good-bye to the North American market, where crossovers made up almost 90 per cent of Buick sales this year, says Stuart Fowle of Buick and GMC communications, but will remain on sale in China, where demand for sedans is still strong. In Canada, Regal sales in 2019 are the highest theyve been since 2016, with about 747 units moved to-date.The mid-size LaCrosse left the Buick lineup earlier this year, and the Regals being axed will leave the brand with a range of En-named utilities, from the subcompact Encore to the full-size Enclave. The current-generation Buick Regal is built by German automaker Opel, which General Motors sold off in 2018, around the time of this gens debut. The two companies worked out an agreement where GM pays Opel to build the car for it.The 2020 Buick Regals sold in China recently refreshed by Opel will apparently continue to be built for GM by the German company. We wont be getting that updated car in Canada next year, though, just a continuation of the 2019

Watch the 2021 Jaguar F-Type hit 480 km/h (in Hot Wheels form)

Here at Driving, we dont usually cover mid-model refreshes you know, those largely cosmetic functionally-unchanged updates automakers try to pass off as all-new models. But were making an exception for Jaguars new 2021 F-Type because a) the already-sexy sports coupe has been rendered even more sensuous; and b) it was introduced with a tremendously cool Hot Wheels track that ran through Jaguars entire Gaydon design facility.Indeed, Jag says the entire track stretches 232 metres 761 feet from its top-of-stairs, soapbox-style launch to its outdoor, running-into-the-real-F-Type finale. And, according to our count, there are no less than 25 of Hot Wheels famous loop-the-loops and three Jaguar calls them gravity-defying jumps that I am sure, what with my experience some 50 years ago, took multiple takes. In between, the camouflaged it is a super-secret prototype after all! miniature raced past CAD/CAM prototyping computers, a pretty nifty clay model of the Jag two-seater, through the headrest of the revised Windsor leather front seats and through the prototyping final assembly area. In between, Mattel estimates the tiny F-Type reached scaled speeds of 480 kilometres an hour!According to Jaguar, Mattel used the companys own CAD drawings to craft the ultra-precise 3D-printed model, recreating, says the company, every beautiful detail of the new F-Type, including its striking new clamshell bonnet, distinctive super-slim Pixel LED headlights and more sculpted front and rear bumpers. The Hot Wheels team also faithfully recreated the new Velocity Blue colour which Jaguar is making a big noise about from the SVO Premium Palette, and even hand-painted the F-Type badge on the back before the model was camouflaged ahead of its own reveal in the film.As for the car itself, the 2021 Jaguar F-Types powertrains turbocharged 2.0-litre four, 3.0L supercharged V6 and supercharged 5.0L V8 remain largely unchanged, although the all-wheel-drive Rs honking V8 gets a boost from 550 hp to 575, good enough, says Jaguar, to scoot to 100 kilometres an hour in just 3.7 seconds.Coping with that increased power is the Rs uprated chassis that includes stiffer springs and anti-roll bars, beefier rear knuckles and ball joints and revised adjustable shock damping. As for styling, a new clamshell bonnet is bordered by super-slim Pixel LED headlights and a subtly enlarged grille. Theres also something Jaguar calls Liquid Metal surfacing, but if youve got any idea what that is, let me know. The hind end likewise gets a design, this time with what Jaguars styling boffins call an unmistakeable chicane signature to its LED lights. Again, I will plead artistic cretinism, but the automaker says theyre inspired by the Jaguar I-PACE all-electric Performance SUV, with subtle monogram pattern detailing and a fine pinstripe beneath.Inside, theres the aforementioned Windsor leather and something called satin finish Noble Chrome. Details include monogram stitch patterns in the seats and door trims, Jaguar Leaper motifs in the headrests and subtle Jaguar Est. 1935 markings on the centre console.First Edition F-Types powered by either the 2.0L turbocharged four or the 3.0L supercharged V6 will be available with an Exterior Design Pack, Black Contrast Roof, unique 20-inch wheels and those 12-way Windsor Leather Performance Seats.Pricing for the 2021 Jaguar F Type starts
