BMW will install Android Auto on its cars beginning 2020

BMW M135iBMW BMW is finally adding Android Auto compatibility to its cars beginning mid-2020, the German automaker said mid-December.Starting in July, BMW owners will be able to hook up their Android-powered devices to their car, and, as long as the vehicles running version 7.0 of its multimedia interface, theyll even be able to do so wirelessly. The integration means those devices can also be synced to the cars digital instrumentation systems, and even the heads-up display. The roll-out will begin in 20 countries in July 2020, then hit additional markets after that. The announcement comes hot on the heels of BMWs Apple CarPlay policy reversal; it has, in most markets, charged a subscription fee to connect to the software, but will now, like basically every other automaker, make such integration

CUSMA trade deal could keep auto jobs in Canada, but car prices could rise

Workers are seen at the FCA Windsor Assembly Plant on Oct. 5, 2018 in Windsor.JEFF KOWALSKY / AFP/Getty Images A new trade deal between Canada, Mexico and the United States has taken a major step toward implementation, and it looks like it could be good news for the auto industry. The agreement which the Canadian government calls CUSMA (Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement) but which the U.S., unsurprisingly, refers to as the USMCA will replace NAFTA (the North American Free Trade Agreement), which has been around since 1994.All three countries had tentatively agreed on the deal in 2018 but wanted several amendments, including on automotive rules of origin. The two American political parties have finally agreed on the terms, while Chrystia Freeland, Canadas Deputy Prime Minister, signed on to the amendments yesterday. Mexico has also stated it is satisfied with the new agreement. The CUSMA deal now has to be ratified by all three countries, which could potentially happen as early as the end of 2019. In the U.S., General Motors and Ford issued statements approving the deal, as did the president of Canadas Unifor auto workers union, who told Automotive News Canada that it could level the playing field between Canada and Mexico.Among the agreements rules are a requirement that 70 per cent of the aluminum used in North American-built cars be of North American origin. The amount of domestic steel is also mandated, and the amendment tightens up the definition of exactly what constitutes North American steel.Under NAFTA, 62.5 per cent of a cars components had to be made in North America in order to move duty-free between the three countries. Under the new agreement, that will rise to 75 per cent by 2023. The deal also prevents the U.S. from imposing future tariffs on specified numbers of Canadian- and Mexican-built auto parts. At least 30 per cent of a vehicle must be made by workers who earn more than US$16 per hour, and Mexican workers will have the right to demand fair pay and freely form unions. An inter-agency committee will be put in place to inspect factories suspected of having poor working conditions an amendment to the original deals provision for U.S. officials to enter and inspect Mexican facilities, which Mexico opposed. Its expected this agreement will keep more auto jobs in Canada and the U.S., rather than seeing them moved to Mexico. However, some experts say this could cause car prices to rise and to reduce the number of smaller vehicles available to buyers, since many of these are currently made in

LA Auto Show Hits and Misses

Here in LA-LA land, the Auto Show is and has mostly been all about going green. The exception was the celebration of 50 years of Hemi muscle power and the fossil fuel needed to run a quarter mile. At least that was a genuine celebration and not the lip service paid to a pressing need that many manufacturers spouted — leaving bluer skies for future generations. As Driving does at every auto show, we pick the best and worst on the floor. Here are the team’s picks for the shiners and horrors!Check out all of our latest auto show coverage hereDavid Booth was ready to pick Karma’s new SC2 concept. With 1,100 horsepower and a shape that’s sensual enough to make Ferrari jealous, it seemed like a certainty. Then Toyota announced the 2021 RAV4 Prime plug-in hybrid. It has 302 horsepower and scoots to 96 km/h in just 5.8 seconds. Fuel economy and performance are wrapped up in an old-faithful of a package. As Herr Motor Mouth opined, “a Gold star for the boys from Toyota.”Andrew McCredie was of the same mind. “Not only does this all-new plug-in hybrid have a full electric range of just over 60 kilometres, it will be the second-fastest Toyota in the automaker’s lineup when it shows up in Canadian showrooms next summer.” The acceleration and horsepower at play that’s fired through a good all-wheel-drive system leaves but one question. “When can I drive one?” My pick as highlight was going to be the Audi RS Q8. How can you not love a high-riding crossover that can run with the RS 6? Sadly, it was not at the show, so I picked the E-tron Sportback. It takes the frumpy and puts some swagger in the e-tron’s all-electric step. It is not going to set a sales record, but the funky headlights complete with the 1.2-million pixel chips that allow five logos to be flashed on the road along with the cool outer façade and the improved aerodynamics sure worked for me.Our resident video guru, Clayton Seams, picked the Ford Mustang Mach-E as the pick of the show. It is “a solid car, with the right variations to cater to a broad owner base.” With two 75.7-kWh models, the EV will be offered in rear-drive and all-wheel-drive. It is a ride many will aspire to for all the right reasons.Curiously, it was also the miss of the show for Seams. “It is just not a Mustang no matter how hard they try to convince people the styling cues like the rear taillights stay true to the original.” Key is the fact that it is more crossover than sports car and the Fu Manchu moustache (the black trim that drapes around the grille) or, as another opined, a very poorly drawn horseshoe. The consensus was it needs to be rebadged something other than a ’Stang! Ford Mustang Mach-E Nadine Filion David Booth’s miss was the Hyundai Vision T concept. “Not because it was ugly (it isn’t) or that Hyundai won’t sell a boatload of them when it comes to market (and it will), but because its press release had not a single iota of technical detail regarding its electrification. All we learned is that it glows blue when it’s recharging and that its styling is “sensually sporty,” but as to the kilowatt-hours of battery, the net horsepower of gas/electric combination or the fuel economy advantage that combo might engender, there was not a peep. Consumers are eager for practical plug-in SUVs. “They want hard, factual information, not a bunch of fluff that wouldn’t pass muster at an art house tea party.”My sentiments echo David’s — Hyundai Vision T plug-in hybrid concept presser was 20 minutes of my life I will never get back. It was full of blah, blah, blah about how the styling is going to set the world on fire, along with promises of transcendental meditation for the inner soul, or some such guff. Not a peep about how the second coming will save the planet with its plug-in technology. Charging port glows blue. La-di-da. Handout / Hyundai Andrew McCredie picked Bollinger as his miss. This Detroit-based all-electric truck builder has been bringing its dog-and-pony show in the form of its retro-inspired SUV and four-door pickup to auto shows for what feels like a decade. “They’re taking orders and speaking with unbridled enthusiasm about the capabilities of their all-electrics, but mysteriously they keep pushing back their delivery dates. A couple of years ago they promised production models by late 2019.” Here we are at the end of 2019 and now the company is saying early 2021. “Call me skeptical, but I can help but think this company is taking a page from the ‘promise-them-the-world-and-get-bought-up-by-a-big-company’ playbook.” Hey, it worked for EV-pickup-rival Rivian and the half-billion investment it got from Ford, so maybe there’s still hope for Bollinger. Don’t bet on it.So, there you have it, some very cool hits at the 2019 LA Auto Show, but sadly the clangers won the day. LISTEN: What do car dealers think about electric vehicles? Are they keen to have them in their showrooms? We talk to Vancouver GM dealer Blair Upton about this and much more during this week’s

News Roundup: An EV crate engine, brands skipping Montreal’s auto show, a luxury car tax and more

Welcome to our weekly round-up of the biggest breaking stories on Driving.ca from this past week. Get caught up and ready to get on with the weekend, because it’s hard keeping pace in a digital traffic jam. Here’s what you missed while you were away.Upcoming electric crate engines promise plug-and-play installationIt’s been some time coming, but it seems automotive DIY-ers may finally be getting some viable options for electric crate engines. The V8-shaped single- and dual-motor EV conversion kits on the way from the California-based startup Electric GT (EGT) will make 140 horsepower and 240 lb.-ft., and 240 horsepower and 340 lb.-ft., respectively. Swindon Powertrain in the U.K., meanwhile, is putting out another electric crate option that makes 110 horsepower and is small enough to fit in a Mini. You just have to find someplace to put the batteries. Volvo, Audi and Mercedes-Benz won’t be attending the Montreal auto showEven with the Detroit auto show officially moving its time slot from January to June, Montreal’s appeal is not strong enough for some European automakers to justify the winter journey to the City of Saints.Following the lead of Mercedes-Benz – which is abstaining from all North American auto shows this year – Volvo and Audi are also pulling out of appearances at 2020’s LeSalon International de Montréal. Volvo is also allegedly pulling the chute for Toronto’s CIAS 2020. Tesla’s hideaway handles blamed in fiery fatal crash“Inaccessible door handles” and “no other ways to open the doors” are what’s being blamed in the death of a Florida resident and Tesla Model S owner. The 48-year-old man allegedly died of smoke inhalation when his vehicle caught fire following an accident, leaving him trapped inside. According to Consumer Reports, door handles are among the most commonly reported issues from Model S owners. Liberal’s proposed luxury car tax stresses B.C. dealersThe recently re-elected Liberal government is proposing a new 10-per-cent luxury tax on vehicles, boats and aircraft priced over $100,000. The little-on-the-top will add yet another line to the price tag of luxury vehicles in British Columbia, which are already subject to a 15-per-cent provincial sales tax on vehicles from $125,000 to $149,999; and a 20-per-cent tax on those over $150,000. Blair Qualey, head of the New Car Dealers Association of B.C., told Automotive News Canada the luxury tax is “very concerning” and the burden on buyers getting “pretty difficult.” Mazda’s first EV gets a touch of RX-8 throwbackThe first electric mass-production Mazda, the MX-30, has arrived, with a smaller battery than most (likely good for about 200 km of range) and a gasoline-powered rotary range-extender – similar to that last found in the RX-8 – for trips beyond city limits. Inside, it’s some of Mazda’s best work yet, with a clean dash and touchscreens for everything that could possibly use one. Look for the Mazda MX-30 in the second half of 2020, and look for the other hot debuts from this year’s Tokyo auto show right

After Mercedes, Volvo and Audi are bailing out from Montreal Auto Show

The Detroit auto show also known as the North American International Auto Show will, in 2020, leave behind its traditional still-hung-over-from-New-Years January time slot for a new its-not-freezing-any-more date in June.Thatll make LeSalon International de Montréal – a.k.a. the SIAM, still hosted in January the first major North American auto show of the year.Does that mean that, three months before its doors open to the public, the 2020 Montreal International Auto Show will see even more concepts cars, world premières or more firecrackers, rock bands and other fanfare? It doesnt seem like it. In fact, the latest news is two more manufacturers are bailing out of the Quebec rendezvous. The organizers, the Corporation des concessionnaires d’automobiles de Montréal, learned a few days ago Audi and Volvo wont show their new vehicles at the downtown Palais des Congrès  during the shows January 17 to 26 run for 2020.That implies Polestar, Volvos new electric-performance brand, which just announced Montreal would play home to its first North American dealership, wont catch any of the eyes of the metropoles Auto Show 200,000 visitors. These two absentees join an already-not-coming Mercedes-Benz; corporate in Germany announced last September the best-selling luxury brand in Canada and the U.S. would be a no-show at all North American exhibitions this year. But, in Montreal, though Mercedes-Benz wont be represented as a manufacturer, local dealerships have accepted the shows offer of a small area outside the main floor, where theyll display their latest products, says SIAM vice-president Denis Dessureault. Its not the first time Montreals automotive rendezvous has to deal with AWOL manufacturers. Most notably, at the turn of this century, a bunch of luxury brands decided to skip the Montreal Auto Show, then held at the Olympic Stadium, over its crashed roof, and organized their own annual event at Place Bonaventure. It lasted only two years.More recently, we saw Porsche drop out of the SIAM picture from 2012 to 2014; it came back in 2015, though Volvo didnt participate that year, nor in 2016.Volvo also bails from Toronto’s CIASWhat about the Canadian International Auto Show (CIAS), scheduled for its 47th run at the Metro Toronto Convention Center from February 14 to 24 next year? Well, theres good news and bad news.Yes, Audi will show its new products in la Ville-Reine, confirms spokesperson Cort Nielsen, adding the Montreal no-show decision was taken by the Montreal dealers. The bad news? Volvo wont participate in Torontos CIAS, despite the auto show being the biggest in Canada with 350,000 visitors and despite Ontarios market registering 42 per cent of all new cars sold each year in the country. For now, only Volvo and Mercedes-Benz are out of the CIAS, though. That brings us to a total of 38 brands for this 2020 edition, general manager Jason Campbell told Driving.ca. He quietly added that the floor space vacated by Benz was quickly grabbed up by competitor BMW-Mini.No confirmations for the 100th annual Vancouver Auto ShowWhen it comes to the Vancouver International Auto Show, an event celebrating its 100th anniversary in March, nothing is confirmed, or not confirmed We dont secure our dealers that quickly, executive director Jason Heard told us.That said, Vancouvers automotive rendezvous already dealt with an absent Mercedes-Benz last year, as did Calgary, Edmonton, Quebec City, New York, ChicagoAnd it could be so much worst. The 2019 NAIAS, the last North American International Auto Show held in Detroit in its usual January slot, had to deal with a much longer list of absentees. Audi, BMW-Mini, Jaguar, Land Rover, Mercedes-Benz, Mitsubishi, Porsche and Volvo all skipped that

Pink auto insurance card goes digital for Ontario drivers

Traffic is blurred in a timed exposure on the Gardiner Expressway during the evening rush hour in Toronto, Ont. on Wednesday April 30, 2014.Ernest Doroszuk/Toronto Sun/QMI Agency Ontario drivers can now carry electronic proof of their auto insurance on their smartphones or other devices.Finance Minister Rod Phillips says the pink paper insurance slip isnt being eliminated yet, but being able to display the information on a phone can save drivers from rummaging through their glove compartments. He says there will be a one-year phase-in period, when insurers will have to issue a paper card in addition to the electronic option if it is requested.Phillips says the electronic cards will feature safeguards that wont allow them to be altered or edited, and privacy concerns are top of mind.Drivers will be responsible for making sure their phone can display the proof of insurance, even with a poor signal, drained battery or damaged screen. The Insurance Bureau of Canada says consumers have digital options in other sectors such as banking and retail, so auto insurers are pleased their customers will have the same

Frankfurt auto show beefs up security amidst anti-car protests

Greenpeace activists protest against climate-damaging cars with an installation with a car set-up upright and banners reading the oil age is ending on the sidelines of the Frankfurt Motor Show IAA in Frankfurt am Main, western Germany, on September 12, 2017.Tobias Schwarz / AFP via Getty As Frankfurt once again prepares to welcome car-makers and -lovers to what is the largest automotive gathering in the world, the Frankfurt Motor Show, or IAA, organizers are paying extra attention to security. With environmental activists looking to gather people to protest the Frankfurt event on September 14, Germany’s auto-industry association, the VDA, is warning show-goers to prepare for longer-than-usual wait times due to additional security checkpoints. According to reporting by Reuters, anti-auto protests were brought to a climax last week when a vandalism spree at a car dealership close to Frankfurt left 40 luxury vehicles damaged. A group that goes by “Rocks the Gearbox” is being investigated in connection with the crime. In an effort to quell (or at least corral) protesters, the VDA is inviting local Greenpeace representatives and auto-execs from Daimler and BMW to a panel discussion about climate change and what it means for mobility in Berlin on September 5.“We are in close contact with the security authorities just as we are at every IAA. Entrance controls will be tightened, given that there may be spontaneous rioting at the show,” VDA spokesman Eckehart Rotter told Reuters.Protesters or not, the Frankfurt motor show will take place from September 12 thru

Trump rejects new tariffs on Japan auto imports ‘at this moment’

US President Donald Trump speaks with reporters as he departs the White House, in Washington, DC, on June 2, 2019. (Jim Watson / Getty Images President Donald Trump says he is not at this moment considering fresh tariffs on imported autos and parts from Japan that he has threatened, citing an agreement in principle with Japan on trade announced over the weekend. Its one of the reasons we made the deal, Trump said in a press conference at the conclusion of the G-7 summit in France. Its something I could do at a later date if I wanted to but were not looking at that. We just want to be treated fairly. The threat of steep new U.S tariffs on imported automobiles and components has loomed over the auto industry and major U.S. trading partners since the the U.S. Commerce Department in February found those imports could impair national security.Trump backed that finding in May, but delayed imposing new levies on the sector through at least mid-November to allow U.S. negotiators to pursue trade deals with Japan and the European Union.Trump had earlier said there would be no change to U.S. tariffs on Japanese autos after he and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe announced an agreement-in-principle over the weekend. During the press conference Monday, Trump also said the U.S. is very close to reaching a trade pact with the European Union, citing the specter of additional levies of up to 25 per cent on imported autos as a reason why.We made a great deal with Japan and were very close to maybe making a deal with the EU, because they dont want tariffs, its very simple. They dont want to tax cars, Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Trump said. I think were going to make a deal with the EU without having to go that route. I may have to go that route but maybe

News Roundup: The heaviest GT500, a US$20M auction mistake and Trump’s latest auto tirade

The all-new Shelby GT500–the pinnacle of any pony car ever engineered by Ford Performance–delivers on its heritage with more than 700 horsepower for the quickest street-legal acceleration and most high-performance technology to date ever offered in a Ford Mustang.Ford Welcome to our weekly round-up of the biggest breaking stories on Driving.ca from this past week. Get caught up and ready to get on with the weekend, because it’s hard keeping pace in a digital traffic jam. Here’s what you missed while you were away. The new Shelby Mustang GT500 is going to be heavy in all senses of the wordThe 2020 Mustang Shelby GT500 is the heaviest Mustang of all time. According to Ford’s dealership guide eSourceBook, the 760-horsepower GT500 will have a curb weight of 4,225 lbs (1,916 kg). Pushing that chunky coupe is a 5.2-litre V8 that pumps power through to the rear wheels via a brand-new Tremec seven-speed dual-clutch auto. There are some ways to lighten it up a bit, like by adding the Carbon-Fiber Track Pack, which cuts out the rear seat. Trump freaks out over automakers siding with California on fuel-efficiency regulationsThe Commander-in-Chief in charge of the the most powerful nation on earth is at it again. This week, Trump lashed out at automakers – via Twitter, of course – over fuel-efficiency requirements. “My proposal to the politically correct Automobile Companies would lower the average price of a car to consumers by more than $3000, while at the same time making the cars substantially safer,” he wrote. The outburst was allegedly caused by news that auto giants including BMW, Ford, VW and Honda had come to an agreement to better the efficiency of their cars through 2026, using Obama-era mandated-in-California rules as their template. Auctioneers blew it with the sale of Ferdinand’s Porsche’s Nazi car The 1939 Porsche Type 64, the only remaining example of one of the ancestors of the marque, was supposed to go up for auction at the recent RM Sotheby’s Monterey sale, and expected to fetch around US$20 million. But, when the auctioneer accidentally started bidding at US$30 million, it drew cheers and laughs from the crowd, especially as bidding quickly rose to US$70 million. That’s when the auctioneer clarified he’d apparently been saying thirteen, not thirty – as in US$13 million – and fourteen, not forty, etc., which caused some auction-goers to walk out and the sale to stall right there on the docket. Something tells us that may have been that auctioneer’s final event. Here’s what the Ram EcoDiesel will costAvailable on all trims in Ram’s 1500 series is the new EcoDiesel option, currently the best-in-class for torque, with 480 lb.-ft. What would you pay for that grunt? Now we know what Ram thinks it’s worth. The EcoDiesel V6 costs $5,800 above the standard Pentastar V6 eTorque in Big Horn and Tradesman, and $3,900 over the Sport, Rebel, Longhorn, Laramie and Limited’s 5.7-litre HEMI V8. Watch for the EcoDiesel badge to start appearing on roads this fall. Toronto drivers play soccer in gridlock trafficWhen all lanes closed on the busy 401 highway near Toronto this week, vehicles came to a complete standstill — but not all drivers did. Two men, one in a suit and the other in jeans and a t-shirt, got out of their cars to take advantage of a bit of open ashphalt in front of a city bus and kick around a soccer ball. A video of the friendly game was posted to a 401 trucker Twitter account. Watch it

10 curious storylines to watch from 2019’s first half of Canadian auto sales

This weeks hot Unhaggle deal includes the Ford F-150, GMC Sierra and Ram 1500.Handout / Ford / GMC / Ram Canadian auto sales are down. In fact, Canadian auto sales have been in decline since the early spring of last year, failing to match the prior-year totals in 16 consecutive months. The story is becoming all too familiar; the headlines too easy to write. Automobile manufacturers cant seem to quit the passenger car business fast enough and cant open new SUV assembly plants with any more haste. Premium marques, via products such as the Mercedes-Benz A-Class and Lexus UX, are diving downmarket in the hopes of sustaining the last decades conspicuous march into the mainstream. Last years top sellers are this years top sellers. And then theres the unpredictable Tesla, with meaningful volume and a future always in question. Those are the main themes. But in a market thats lost more than 5 percent of its volume through the first half of the year, weve sorted through the numbers to find 10 stories that fill in the blanks. In search of a measure of nuance, these 10 tales are the details well want to look back on in six months time to see how 2019 really turned out.Top Trucks TumbleIn the highly competitive full-size pickup truck arena, the fact that the Ford F-150 hasnt been fully redesigned since the 2015 model year should, theoretically, bode well for freshly redesigned rivals. The Ram 1500, GMC Sierra, and Chevrolet Silverado were all new for the 2019 model year. Yet in a gradually shrinking pickup truck market, Fords full-size pickup truck sales are up 4 percent this year, while the second, third, and fourth-ranked trucks from Ram, GMC, and Chevrolet are sliding. And theyre sliding quite noticeably. The F-Series top challengers are collectively down by more than 7,000 sales so far this year. The Detroit RiverOnce known as The Big Three and now more clearly as The Detroit Three (irrespective of brand origin), General Motors, Ford Motor Company, and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles produced only 41 percent of all auto sales in Canada during 2019s first six months. Thats down from 43 percent at this stage of 2018, its worse than the market share produced by the trio during the last major recession of a decade ago, and its a far cry from the 53 percent share attributed to the Detroit Three as recently as 2007.Car QuintetThe fact that cars traditional passenger cars the likes of which more than half of all buyers opted for a decade ago are struggling is not news. Barely more than one-quarter of all automobile purchases ends up as a car acquisition. But what amplifies the degree to which cars are now so wholly rejected is the decline of Canadas most popular cars. Through the first half of 2019, Canadas five best-selling cars (Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla, Hyundai Elantra, Mazda3, Volkswagen Golf) are all selling less often than they did a year ago. In fact, the quintet has combined to lose nearly 10,000 sales compared with a year ago.Homegrown SUVsBoth of Canadas two best-selling cars are built right here in Canada. The same can be said in the SUV/crossover sector. The difference, however, is the level of success encountered by Canadian-made SUVs; not just the number one Toyota RAV4 and number two Honda CR-V but by other Canadian-assembled utility vehicles, as well. The RAV4, CR-V, and Ford Edge all rank inside the top 10. Together with the Chevrolet Equinox, Lexus RX, Ford Flex, Lincoln Nautilus, and Lincoln MKT, Canadian-made SUVs account for nearly one-fifth of the SUV market.Monotonous Minivan MinimizingShoppers that in times past were automatically destined to drive away from a new car dealer in a minivan are, just like passenger car buyers, increasingly destined to buy a new three-row crossover. This isnt a new phenomenon, but the rate at which Canadas five-strong minivan lineup is collapsing is now solidly in nosedive mode. Minivan volume plunged 19 percent in calendar year 2018; minivans are down 18 percent this year. That takes these monobox people carriers down to just 3.5 percent of the market. Aside from an uptick in sales of the Kia Sedona (which accounts for less than one-tenth of the segment), each nameplate in the segment is in decline. The Chrysler Pacifica, Dodge Grand Caravan, and Honda Odyssey are all down by double-digit percentage losses compared with 2018.Vorsprung Durch OffspringIn Audis showrooms, the student has become the teacher. Audis A4 lineup goes back generations, all the way to the mid-90s B5 generation of which nearly 1.7 million were built. In 2007, the A4 made possible an Audi coupe/convertible range called the A5. As time wore on, it became clear that the two-door market was evolving. Thus, the launch of the second-generation A5 spawned a direct A4 rival called the A5 Sportback, a liftback four-door A5 that, as it turns out, helps to make the A5 far more popular than ever. In fact, the car that Audi spun off from the A4 to incrementally add premium passenger car sales is now
