The Genesis G90 has been redesigned for the 2020 model year, taking a bold turn in styling thats soon to be present on every Genesis model.Only one trim is available, but it includes everything — all safety features, all technology and destination and delivery fees for $89,750 in Canada, the automaker said early August. That price also includes Genesis at Home concierge service, complimentary scheduled maintenance, Genesis Connected Services, map updates and more, for five years or 100,000 km.The standard engine for Canadian G90s is now a 5.0-litre V8 that produces 420 horsepower and 383 lb.-ft. of torque. The 3.3-litre turbocharged V6 is also available through special order; it makes 365 horsepower and 376 lb.-ft. of torque, and drops the price to $86,750.Both engines send the power through an eight-speed automatic transmission to all four wheels. That all-wheel-drive system is smart, too; the electronic transfer case can vary the torque from front to rear in response to driving demands. As for the styling, the flagship sedan will debut the latest generation of Genesis Athletic Elegance design language, featuring new Quad Lamp styling and a more prominent diamond grille with G-MATRIX crosshatch pattern. The technology we talked about encompasses a 12.3-inch central display with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. Lane Follow Assist, Blind-Spot View Monitor, Rear Cross-Traffic Collision Avoidance-Assist, Forward Collision Avoidance-Assist and Rear Safe Exit Assist are all standard on the G90, as are 10 airbags. The rest of the interior is obviously luxurious, with touches of copper and black all over. Quilted Nappa leather seating, leather-wrapped dashboard with contrast piping, leather-wrapped centre console and natural wood trim with exposed grain texture also add to the luxurious

Future sports cars sold in Canada will be quieter because of this new EU rule
2020 Mercedes-AMG GT R ProHandout / Mercedes-Benz Regulations that dictate the maximum volume of new sports cars in Europe will also result in quieter cars in North America and around the world, according to a Mercedes-AMG boss. In an interview with Australian publication Car Sales, Mercedes-AMG’s head of product planning, Basitian Bogenschutz, confirmed the upcoming AMG A 45 S and CLA 45 S will be the first AMG products to sing at the volume dictated by the European authorities. And that’s not just in Europe, either, as Bogenschutz explains that producing two separate exhaust systems with different sound outputs for different markets is simply too pricey. So, AMG for one will take the path of least resistance and produce the one quieter unit to be distributed to all markets. The tightening European sound restrictions will spell the end of the current CLA 45’s and A 45’s engine’s snaps, crackles and pops, replacing it instead with a system that communicates that hearty gurgle to those inside the cabin, but not outside. “So we added the AMG pure performance sound, where we take the real sound from the exhaust system, the pulsation of the real sound and move it inside the car,” Bogenshutz told Car Sales. “It works together with the exhaust system.” Mercedes-AMG is the first maker of loud cars to detail how the European regulations will impact the global driving community, but it likely won’t be the last. The rules are the rules, and fussing about them, no matter how loudly, won’t win any exceptions. The future is coming, but you’ve got to listen to hear it.

Mercedes-AMG’s CLA 45 Shooting Brake is as beautiful as it is not for Canada
Whenever an automaker reveals a vehicle in Europe that we want but won’t get here in North America, it almost feels like they’re teasing us intentionally. The latest car to make us jelly of our European cousins is this handsome hatch, the CLA 45 Shooting Brake, which Mercedes-AMG just pulled the covers off of. With its Panamericana grille and long, sweeping roofline, the five-doored CLA 45 and 45 S appear as a pure gift to wagon-lovers, but for Canadians, its another look but dont touch situation. Those European feet that are allowed to flatten the accelerator will feel the pull of the world’s most powerful turbocharged four-cylinder production engine, a modified version of that found in the CLA 45. Here it makes 387 horsepower (416 in the S model) and ushers the estate car up to 100 km/h in 4.1 seconds (4.0 flat in the S).As is the AMG trend nowadays, there’s also a Drift Mode option that helps drivers get appropriately squirrel-ly. A sharply styled compact wagon with 416 horsepower and Drift Mode? Ugh! No thank you!Yeah, see, even writing that as a joke feels wrong. Pricing for the Mercedes-AMG CLA 45 and 45 S has not yet been released yet. But we can’t buy it anyway, so who

Boat blocks Toronto highway on Canada Day, sparks national caption contest
Drivers who opted to cut a few minutes off of their Canada Day travels this year by paying the toll and hopping on the 407 ETR Highway in the Greater Toronto Area were rewarded by an interesting sight. Because at some point on July 1, 2019, there was a large water vessel parked haphazardly across the left lane of the 100-km/h highway. The 20-ish-foot motorboat allegedly fell off a trailer on its way to or from one of Ontario’s boat-friendly bodies of water, thus blocking the left two lanes of the 407 Highway near Dixie Road.As a way of letting the public know about the potential delay – though traffic looks to be moving pretty well in the photo provided – the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) shipped out a Tweet asking the public to caption the photo, which shows the boat lying perpendicular to the traffic lines, its white paint scraped off on the highway’s surface. More than 13,000 Mazda3s recalled in Canada over wheels that could fall off
2019 Mazda3 SportBrian Harper Mazda is recalling 13,108 examples of its 2019-model-year Mazda3 in Canada because a manufacturing defect may increase the odds the wheels will fall off.The Japanese automaker says while the lug nuts on the wheels were tightened to the correct specification at the factory, a manufacturing error may mean a gap between the wheel hub bolt and the hub flange was left during assembly. The gap could allow the lug nuts to loosen when the vehicle is in motion, which could in turn result in the wheels falling off completely.Drivers will hear a rattling sound before the wheel completely separates from the car, Mazda suggested.Recalled vehicles will simply have their lug nuts re-torqued to the correct specifications. No incidents of wheels detaching from Mazda3s has yet been reported, nor have any accidents or injuries tied to the

The Shelby Mustang GT500 will cost almost $100k in Canada
The all-new Shelby GT500–the pinnacle of any pony car ever engineered by Ford Performance–delivers on its heritage with more than 700 horsepower for the quickest street-legal acceleration and most high-performance technology to date ever offered in a Ford Mustang.Ford Ford has just released pricing for the brand-new 2020 Shelby GT500, the most powerful Mustang ever built, and it isnt cheap. The 2020 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 costs $94,675 Canadian dollars a hell of a lot more than a Dodge Challenger Hellcat, or even a Chevy Camaro ZL1. The extra cash isnt just for another 150 added to the GT350, though; you get a whole lot of features that elevate it from mere muscle car to damn-near-supercar.The big news about the GT500 has always been the engine, and rightly so, because its a doozy. The 5.2-litre supercharged-V8 is the most torque-dense V8 ever, according to Ford. Basically, that just means its squeezed more power out of a smaller package with this drivetrain, in this case 760 horsepower and 625 lb.-ft. of torque. The engine is paired to an eight-speed automatic transmission as the only gearbox available, which can knock off shifts faster than your hand anyway. If you want more added to your ridiculous car, Ford will allow you to pay for the Carbon Fibre Track Package, which adds bare carbon-fibre 20-inch wheels with Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires; an adjustable GT4 track wing; adjustable strut-top mounts; and front splitters on each side. Fordll also keep the rear seats for itself when you check that box. If youre more budget-minded, you can spec the Handling Package, which adds a Gurney flap on the rear spoiler, as well as the front splitters. The Recaro seats can also be added separately from the Carbon Fibre Track Package. Finally, if you fancy a comfier ride, you can add the Technology Package, which includes a BO sound system, six-way power-adjustable driver seat, heated mirrors, Sync 3 with navigation and cross-traffic

Canada and California join up on vehicle emissions standards
A worker inserts a probe into the tailpipe of a car while performing an emissions test Canada has signed an agreement with California to tackle vehicle-borne pollution even as that state battles President Trump in the courts over tailpipe emissions.Catherine McKenna, Canadas Minister of Environment and Climate Change, signed a new cooperation agreement for cleaner transportation with Mary Nicols, chair of the California Air Resources Board (CARB).Uniquely among the U.S. states, California has the ability to set its own vehicle emissions standards, an authority dating back to the 1960s when it fought the smog that blanketed Los Angeles.Other states can choose to follow them, or to follow federal standards, which are not as stringent. Currently, fourteen states follow California regulations, along with the District of Columbia. The agreement is a commitment for Canada and California to work together on their respective regulations, in an effort to reduce the amount of greenhouse gas (GHG) pollutants coming from vehicles. The Canadian governments goal is for all light-duty vehicles sold in the country to be 100-per-cent zero-emission by 2040. With Canadas current regulations, 2025 model-year light-duty vehicles will burn up to 50 per cent less fuel, and emit 50 per cent less greenhouse gases, than vehicles built in 2008.California requires that automakers have zero-emission vehicles as a growing proportion of their sales, with the goal of 5 million zero-emission vehicles by 2030. One in ten new vehicles sold in California is a plug-in car, and the state accounts for half of all plug-in hybrid cars sold in the United States. The two will also share information on cleaner fuels. Canada is developing a Clean Fuel Standard intended to cut 30 million tonnes of emissions in 2030, the equivalent of retiring 7 million vehicles.California is currently suing the U.S. federal government, after Trump said last summer that the state would no longer be allowed to set its own standards. Trump is also trying to roll back federal standards set under Barack Obama in 2012, which require vehicles to improve in fuel efficiency each year through 2025. Canada aligned with the United States on Obamas stricter 2012 regulations, but is now reviewing that commitment in light of Trumps attempt to scrap the rules. In a statement, the David Suzuki Foundation, based in Vancouver, said that joining with jurisdictions like California in maintaining strong regulations is the right direction for Canada and puts the U.S. federal government, which is trying to weaken standards, on the wrong page. But the Canadian Automobile Dealers Association (CADA) said that aligning with a single state runs counter to the benefits of a single national standard with the United States. It said that while the Canadian new-car sector is committed to fuel economy improvements, Any movement away from a harmonized approach will hinder choice and increase costs for Canadian

Transport Canada investigating 250,000 GM trucks, SUVs over braking issue
2017 Chevrolet SilveradoChevrolet Transport Canada opened a probe June into 249,700 General Motors trucks and SUVs over whether the vehicles power brake systems could deteriorate prematurely, causing issues for owners and leading to incident or injury. The safety regulator is specifically looking at GMC Yukon, Cadillac Escalade and Chevrolet Suburban and Tahoe SUVs from model years 2015 through 2017; as well as light-duty Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra trucks from model years 2014 through 2017.The move follows the opening of an investigation last November by the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) over the same issue. The NHTSA had received 487 reports from drivers of some GM trucks and SUVS alleging their vehicles required hard brake pedal effort to stop adequately, and that stopping distances were extended anyway. This was attributed to a deterioration of the engine-driven brake assist vacuum pump, reports Reuters. That group counted nine incidents of collisions related to poor braking; and two injuries among those reports, and launched its own probe into about 2.73 million SUVs and pickups from model years 2014 through

Porsche recalling almost 9,000 cars in Canada over rollaway risk
Almost 9,000 older Porsche sedans and SUVs are being recalled in Canada because a defect with their gear shifters may put them at risk of rolling away when their owners think theyve put them in PARK.Some 8,742 vehicles are affected in Canada, along with another 99,700 in the U.S., for a total of about 108,400.The specific models affected include Porsche Cayenne SUVs from 2004 through 2010; Cayenne S and Turbo SUVs from 2003 through 2006; and Cayenne Turbo S SUVs from the 2006 model year. Also affected are Porsche Panamera and Panamera 4 sedans from 2011 through 2016; Panamera S, 4 S and Turbo sedans from 2010 through 2016; and a wide variety of Turbo trims and 4 special editions from specific model years in the 2012 through 2016 range. In affected vehicles, a plastic bushing attached to the cable between the gear shifter and the gearbox may separate; even with the vehicle in PARK and the key removed, this means it may be possible for it to roll away.Porsche does not know of any injuries related to the defect, but has received numerous reports of the cables detaching. Porsche dealers will begin replacing the bushing in

The 2020 Hyundai Palisade will start at $38,499 in Canada
2020 Hyundai PalisadeJil McIntosh / Driving Hyundai is serious about getting North American families into its three-row products. With an intro price of under $39,000, the 2020 Palisade will no doubt attract some budget-conscious buyers in Canada. And so it should. The new flagship, which debuted at the L.A. auto show last year, will fill the hole left by the Santa Fe XL, which the brand recently sent into retirement. The Palisade is larger than its predecessor in most ways (it’s got to accommodate that extra row of seats, after all), with more legroom and cargo space. But as we noted in our first drive of the vehicle, the Palisade is far from a redone and renamed Santa Fe. The 2020 Palisade is based on a brand-new chassis, which it shares with its cousin, the Telluride, over at Kia. Its 3.8-litre V6 engine makes 291 horsepower and 262 lb.-ft. of torque and is paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission in all models. That power is sent to the front two wheels in the entry-level Essential trim, but to all four for the rest of the Palisade fam. 2020 Hyundai Palisade Jil McIntosh / Driving These details add up to a nimble ride, which is made comfortable as well by interior features like Nappa leather and suede surfaces, standard heated front seats, and new safety tech like lane-following assist, highway driving assist and blind view monitor. Driving modes include the usual Comfort, Sport, Eco and Smart, but Hyundai has also pre-programed ‘terrain’ settings for mud, sand and snow. We shouldn’t need to tell you which of those will be most useful to Canadians. The Essential and Preferred trims are fitted with the 8-seat configuration featuring three rows of bench seats, and the Luxury trim has that option too. The top-of-the-Palisade-line Ultimate trim is available exclusively as a seven-seater. Here’s the full list of Canadian MSRPs for the 2020 Hyundai Palisade models set to arrive in Canada this month.
