Eclectic weekend for carnuts in B.C.

Boxy and beautiful, this 1967 Plymouth GTX with a four-speed was seen at the Langley Good Times Cruise-In last weekend.Cam Hutchins This weekend has a very eclectic range of events that includes racing, swap meets, car shows and even a couple of toy runs. The must attend in my mind is at Mission Raceway tomorrow, with road racing all day then crazy nighttime drags in the evening. You could even do the toy run in the morning and then head to the trackIf you have never been to the track, or you have not been to the track this year, this is the day to go. The Confederation of Autosport Car Clubs puts on a really great day of road racing with all sorts of cars from Formula Fords to Miatas, Mustangs, RX7s, Lotus, CRXs, Civics and even purpose-built NASCAR type racecars. There is something for everyone, as some of the cars look completely stock, just like the ones you remember driving beside you in rush hour. Then if the day cant get better, stick around for the night races on the drag strip. Not many stock-looking cars on this track, but lots of muscle. And noise! I have not been to a night drag in a long time so am really looking forward to it. Longtime friend Bert Worrall will be checking out his new rear-end set-up on his crowd-pleasing Orange Dodge Dart.Sunday start at the Model A Swap meet to get some parts or ideas for your next build, then head to The Greater Vancouver Street Machines Car Club Car show at the Jolly Mac Pub in North Surrey. The car show is always good and so is the food.Street machines or BMWs? The BMW Car Club is hosting a car show in North Van so if you dont want to drive to the suburbs check out the Bimmers on the lawn at Waterfront Park.Somewhere that did not have a lot of BMWs was last weekends Langley Good Times Cruise in Aldergrove. But there were well over 1,000 cars that were displayed along Fraser Highway from 264th to 272th. Eight amazing blocks of awesome cars lined either side of the highway and even some in the middle of the road.My parents drove a full-sized station wagon with a 429 so I have a soft spot for the big block Fords and one car at the show grabbed me and will stay in my heart forever. A 1971 Ford Torino with a shaker hood scoop, rear window louvers and a four-speed manual transmission! The other car that caught my eye was the 1976 Chevy Nova SS with you guessed ita manual transmission. Probably a four-speed but may have been a five. And so not to leave the other member of the Big Three out, there was a very nice 1967 Plymouth GTX, the epitome of in the box styling. It was like taking a block of clay, removing the material above the hood and trunk and calling it a design. The very boxy 1967 GTX seemed to be so far away from the sexy models Mopar would turn out in the next few years but this is one sexy beast. White with very understated red stripe and a pair of little tiny hood scoops this car was just perfect. It was good to see lots of kids enjoying the show and lets keep this rolling by taking a kid to a show this weekend. There are not many left in 2019!SHOWSSEPT. 13-15What: Route 99 Cruz-InWhere: LillooetWhen: Friday 5p.m. Poker Run; Saturday 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. car show, Lillooet Recreation Centre; Sunday racing at Lillooet Airport starts at 9:30 a.m.Info: 250-256-1655, horsinaround@telus.net or gina.doyle@hotmail.caWebsite: route99.caSEPT. 14What: Vancouver Classic Car Toy RunWhere: Meet at 2916 Springer St., Port MoodyWhen: Gather at 9 a.m., starts at 10 a.m.Admission: Donation of cash, gift card or new unwrapped toy to benefit the Lower Mainland Christmas BureauInfo: 604-970-9048 or cmckee@sutton.comWebsite: lmcb.caSEPT. 14-15What: Port Alberni Toy Run for MotorcyclesWhere: Starts at Little Qualicum Falls and ends at Glenwood CentreWhen: Saturday 10 a.m. toy run gathering and noon start time; Sunday poker runAdmission: Donation of a new unwrapped toy or a cash donation. Dog Days of B.C. summer a carnut’s delight

Two cars side by side pulling wheelies during last weekend’s Langley Loafer Old Time Drags.Cam Hutchins Last week was certainly one for the record books for me. I have never shot so many cars of so many different types over the course of a few short days.I started on Monday shooting an amazing 1950 6C 2500 Ghia being restored by RX Autoworks for the big Pebble Beach Concours next weekend. I went to the North Vancouver shop expecting to see a close-to-finished car, but they were still working madly to get it ready for The Show. Im leaving Sunday for the Monterey car fest so will have plenty of photos to show in a couple of weeks time. Then it was down to Tsawwassen to photograph Jody Wilsons amazing 1955 Gasser-style Chevy for a magazine. This car is a traditional looking Gasser but with lots of cool tricks. I also shoot Jody racing at the Langley Loafers Old Time drags on Saturday where won the trophy for Best Bitchin Race Car. Not bad for someone who doesnt make his living wrenching, but rather as an artist working in silver and carving totem poles. On Thursday I went to see Garry and Darlene Cassidy and see their car collection that had to be replaced due to a fire a coupe of years ago. They have done a great job rebuilding up a collection of amazing vehicles. The next day it was to Abbotsford for the Agrifair as a guest of Campbell Motorsports. I knew the Campbells from various car shows and their Super L Auto Wrecking yard, but this was the first time I got to see them run their tractor pulls. The crowd, myself included, loved this big horsepower spectacle, and the tractors with three, four and even five big dragster engines were beyond belief! The Aqrifair welcomed the Truck Tractor Pull back after 15 years and heres hoping they will be back next year!On Sunday I went to the best bargain for parking at White Rock for the day: just $10 bucks to park all day at the beachif you have a cool car. The Westcoasters Daze has for years been run by Mike Herrick and now with the help of Darby Motorsports it looks to live on at the great East Beach location. This weekend I only have tonight and tomorrow to get my car ready in preparation of driving south on Sunday for Car Week in Carmel. Tonight Im taking in the street legal drags to see the VWs attack the track, and tomorrow a day and night at Mission Raceway Park for the Historics racing followed by some drag racing. As always, wherever your carnut travels take you this weekend, take a kid along for the ride.SHOWSAUG. 9-11What: Great Canadian VW Show WeekendWhere: Friday night drags at Mission Raceway Park. 5 p.m. till close. Beautiful B.C. a bountiful place for carnuts this weekend

A highly modified Corvette dragster takes off at Mission Raceway Park on June 30, the 66th anniversary of the first Vette to roll off the assembly line in Flint, Michigan.Cam Hutchins After last weekends Canada Day blitz of car events across the province, youd think things might slow down for this weekend, but thanks to the strong and wide carnut culture in B.C., there are plenty of shows to attend and races to watch today through Sunday. As a member both the B.C. Vintage Truck Museum and the B.C. Hot Rod Association Im really excited about their combined shows this year at the Casino in Cloverdale on Saturday. Unfortunately, that means Ill miss the vintage races in Seattle. Maybe next year.Last Saturday I went to the Doorwarz drag races in Mission and got some great shots of the cars that somewhat resemble what rolled out of the factory. But when the front wheels go high in the air you know they are a long way away from the production line. On Canada Day I was up early for an 8 a.m. photo shoot at the Jellybean Autocrafters show roll-in. As always, a stellar collection of classics, particularly the 1959-61 Impalas that I am always partial to. The Cougar club all came in together and while Gordy Korupchuks cool car wasnt the only one to overheat, he at least had an excuse, as it is a fresh engine of a fresh build. Luckily the road is sloped so he could coast much of the way in.But no coasting this weekend as there are 21 car events/races to get to. And dont forget to take a kid along with you. Not only does that continue the car culture in our province, it also provides you with some extra pushing power in case your car overheats.SHOWSJULY 6What: BCHRA Hot Rod Saturday B.C.
