Civil case against VW’s diesel emissions scandal to start VW owners are seeking compensation for alleged fitting of emissions defeat devices Class action against Volkswagen will begin today (Monday 2nd December) in the UK, as lawyers representing more than 90,000 VW owners look to settle whether defeat device software fitted to 1.2 million vehicles was designed to illegally circumnavigate clean air laws. More than four years on from when the VW emissions scandal initially broke, VW customers in the UK are taking their case to the courts in the latest round of legal battles for the German manufacturer. The action is a civil suit, rather than a trial to determine any criminal undertakings. Other countries have already seen settlements paid by Volkswagen, with the scandal costing the company billions of pounds in legal damages. VW has paid more than $4 billion in penalties from criminal charges brought two years ago. Penalties in Australia have also been settled for customer compensation. In Europe, there has been no such closure, with cases due to come to court in the UK and a number of other countries. Here, VW claims that the emissions software used was not illegal – despite German authorities having previously ruled that it was. Volkswagen claims that no defeat devices have been installed in any vehicles in the UK, and that it will contest the action.

Ford insiders make the case for – and against – the Mach-E being named ‘Mustang’
Ford Mustang Mach-ENadine Filion News about Fords 2021 Mustang Mach-E electric SUV keeps breaking every day, pointing to ever-more ambitious plans for the model. After shipping it to dealers late 2020, the automaker plans to sell 50,000 examples globally through 2021, reports the Detroit News for context, Nissans Leaf managed 30,000 units in its best year. A performance-spec Shelby version is allegedly in the works, too.And Ford Europe design chief Murat Gueler admits some execs have even talked about building a family around the Mustang name. This is, of course, assuming Mustang enthusiasts, pitchforks and torches in hand, havent by then burned Dearborn to the ground for sticking the name of the iconic pony car on an electric SUV in the first place.Yes, the reaction to the Blue Oval calling the Mach-E a Mustang has been simply calamitous. Even with Ford bringing on the charismatic Idris Elba as a brand ambassador, the backlash has been unrelenting. No fewer than four petitions for the name to be changed have been launched; promises have hurriedly come down from Ford execs that youll be convinced once you drive it; and a survey of social media shows fans of rival muscle cars from General Motors and Mopar have even sympathetically relaxed or resisted their usual trolling of Mustang owners. There have been, arguably, early warnings Ford holds no name completely sacred. In 1967, the company turned its Thunderbird, once a two-seat roadster, into a marshmallow-y four-door luxury sedan; 10 years later the vaunted Mercury Cougar muscle car badge would show up on a station wagon. Then again, those marques didnt jump from gasoline to electric power, or from car to sport utility.‘Making the Mustang Mach-E’A few days after its launch, Ford released this video about the Mustang Mach-Es development, featuring several executives, engineers, designers and Mustang fans. The company doesnt hide that the group behind the vehicle, Team Edison, didnt start out with the intent to make their new EV product a Mustang, pinning the inspiration for bringing the haloed brand into it on Jim Farley, president of new business and technology. The video shows us, too, that Mach-Es being labelled Mustang faced plenty of scepticism from inside the company, even from executive chairman Bill Ford himself, who was absolutely adamant that it not be a Mustang. But, as you might expect of a piece of apologia like this, by the end of the 20-minute clip, all those Doubting Thomases have been convinced, turned onto the thought this noiseless four-door could be a Mustang after all.The film finishes with the fans take, sage words to the effect progress cant be stopped, and that itd be kind of neat to see Mustang on the flanks of a spaceship a hundred years from now.The argument against Mach-E — from a Ford insiderBut the argument doesnt stop there just because the credits roll; in fact, Driving.ca managed to tap for an exclusive interview a Mustang subject matter expert working for Ford who vows the Mach-E is not a Mustang. End of story. If you ask them, this is instead a marketing gimmick gone wrong.Mustang was used for publicity purposes; its as simple as that, writes our insider, whose identity were keeping hidden to save them from a possible reprisal by their employer. We can all see Ford did not have faith in the vehicle to live on its own. If they did, they would have given it a separate name. Mustang Family Photo, but one of these things is not like the others The Mustang enthusiast community, they suggest, is not opposed to progress, just what they take as a flagrant disregard for the Mustang brand. We are not upset about it being electric. Fact is, electric (power) gives us instantaneous torque, and that is pretty darn great. We are upset about it turning into a completely different vehicle segment within a brand that already has multiple SUVs.Porsche didnt slap a 911 on their SUV. Lamborghini didnt call their SUV a Murcilago. Was introducing an SUV within those brands polarizing? Absolutely. But, at least they didnt sacrifice a name that means so much to people. There are few counter-arguments our insider, a lifelong Mustang fan, cant refute. People have claimed Ford experimented with four-door and station wagon (Mustang) designs in the early 60s, they explain. Although this is true, (Ford) chose not to pursue these body styles because they claimed it went against Mustangs mission to be a sporty vehicle. When you have a product as enormously successful as Mustang, you invariably have to consider how to capitalize on the idea. While Mustang used the platform of the compact Falcon as its starting point, the four-door Mustang could have brought the idea full circle by adding two doors to the pony car. Fortunately for Mustang fans, cooler heads prevailed. Ford That feeling of a loss of identity may be the strongest argument against the pony badge being slapped onto the face of the Mach-E if not, the pony badge itself is. The

Nissan ‘to review future’ of Sunderland plant in case of no-deal Brexit
Nissan could close its Sunderland factory if the UK leaves the European Union without a trade deal, according to reports in the Financial Times. The newspaper, citing three people with knowledge of the matter, reports a no-deal Brexit could prompt the Japanese firm to stop making the Qashqai SUV at the site – which could ultimately lead to the closure of the plant. In November 2016, Nissan pledged to build the hugely popular Qashqai in the UK, after then-chairman Carlos Ghosn received assurances from then-prime minister Theresa May that the firm’s operations would be protected from the impact of Brexit – but the agreement was reportedly contingent on a ‘soft’ Brexit with an EU trade deal. The FT claims that, under a global review Nissan has since undertaken, the Sunderland plant could be downsized or even closed if a no-deal Brexit makes it uncompetitive to ship cars from the site to the EU. Currently, Nissan also makes the Juke and Leaf models at Sunderland. In a statement issued to Autocar, Nissan said: “While we don’t comment on speculative scenarios, our plans for Qashqai production in Sunderland have not changed.” But the firm did warn that a no-deal Brexit could have a serious impact on British-based industry. It added: “Since 1986, the UK has been a production base for Nissan in Europe. Our British-based RD and design teams support the development of products made in Sunderland, specifically for the European market. “Frictionless trade has enabled the growth that has seen our Sunderland plant become the biggest factory in the history of the UK car industry, exporting more than half of its production to the EU. “Today we are among those companies with major investments in the UK who are still waiting for clarity on what the future trading relationship between the UK and the EU will look like. “As a sudden change from those rules to the rules of the WTO will have serious implications for British industry, we urge UK and EU negotiators to work collaboratively towards an orderly balanced Brexit that will continue to encourage mutually beneficial trade.” Current prime minister Boris Johnson has said he is committed to the UK leaving the EU on the currently scheduled date of 31 October regardless of whether a deal has been agreed. A no-deal Brexit would mean UK-built cars such as Nissan models made at Sunderland would be subject to tariffs when being shipped to Europe. But under a trade agreement between the EU and Japan, Nissan would be able to export models made in its home country into the EU without tariffs. That would potentially make it more profitable to make models for Europe in Japan rather than the UK. Earlier this year, Nissan reversed a decision to make the next-generation of the X-Trail SUV at Sunderland, citing Brexit concerns and the decline of diesel as reasons. The plant also recently lost the Infiniti Q30 and QX30, after Nissan decided to withdraw its premium sub-brand from Europe. It has also cut back a number of jobs at the plant as part of a global cost-cutting initiative. Nissan opened its Sunderland plant in 1986, and is believed to have invested more than £4 billion in it since then. The plant has recently been upgraded to prepare for the next-generation Juke crossover, which is due to go into production shortly. Honda is in the process of closing its Swindon factory, in a move it says is not primarily due to Brexit. But BMW and Toyota have warned they could switch production from the UK in the case of a no-deal

Carlos Ghosn’s wife pleads to Donald Trump to help former Nissan exec’s case
Former Nissan chairman Carlos Ghosn leaves his lawyers offices after he was released earlier in the day from a detention centre after posting bail in Tokyo on March 6, 2019.Kazuhiro Nogi / Getty The wife of former Nissan chairman Carlos Ghosn is pleading to the U.S. president to help his case. According to Reuters, Carole Ghosn wants Donald Trump to speak with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe during the G20 summit about helping to prove her husband’s innocence. Carole has already called upon the French government to help as well. I’d like President Trump to speak to Prime Minister Abe about fair conditions, fair trial conditions and to let me speak to my husband and also to respect this presumption of innocence until proven guilty, Carole Ghosn told the BBC. Carole Ghosn was born in Beirut, but has a U.S. passport. Carlos Ghosn is accused of financial misconduct charges but claims he was ousted as Nissan chairman by a boardroom coup. and that his former colleagues stabbed him in the back. According to Carole, she has not spoken to Carlos since he was re-arrested on April 4th. They told him one of the bail conditions, the restrictions, is he isn’t allowed to speak to me or talk to me, which I find inhumane, she explained. All of this could have been dealt with internally within the company. This didn’t need to go this far and on top of it my husband is innocent and time will prove the truth. The G20 summit will take place in Osaka on June 28 and

The curious case of the crumpled Camaro and two dead buffalo
It’s not uncommon to find bison near or on the road in Wood Buffalo National Park in the Northwest Territories. It’s right there in the name. Locals know that and drive appropriately. And according to one local gas station attendant who says he gassed up a Chevrolet Camaro with New Jersey license plates on a Saturday night in May, the young, male out-of-towner was notified of the potential mammalian road blocks. I asked him where he was going, and he said he was heading out of town, the Petro-Canada attendant, Brian Dragon, told the CBC. I told him there were a lot of buffalo on the road, and I told him to be careful. Unfortunately, it seems the unknown driver of the Camaro with tinted windows throughout and black American air force-inspired decals on the side was not cautious enough. Kathy Lepine and her mother drove up on the scene early the next morning, seeing the two dead buffalo a short distance from the smashed vehicle with its body badly damaged, the windshield collapsed and a blanket draped eerily over the driver’s seat. But perhaps the most bizarre and grisly detail was that the driver was nowhere in sight. We saw the buffalo upside down and kind of mangled, followed by the red car with the star on it, Lepine said. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a vehicle accident so fresh and that bad the whole front end of that vehicle was toast, like, it was crushed. Local authorities from the nearby town of Fort Smith have yet to release any details about the accident, including whether or not they know where the driver is, saying only that there was no ambulance called to the location.
