Toyota has revealed a hot GR Sport version of subsidiary company Daihatsu’s Copen convertible. The compact two-seater, built to Japan’s ‘kei car’ specifications, receives a number of styling and chassis upgrades to create an entry point into Toyota’s growing range of performance models. Toyota’s modifications are primarily handling-focused, with the addition of a front brace and reshaped centre brace enhancing body rigidity. Suspension modifications, including a retuned spring rate and bespoke shock absorbers, are claimed to achieve a balance between smoothness and grip. The Copen’s electric power steering system has been tuned for enhanced dynamics, and is claimed to improve turn-in response and make it easier to use the car’s full performance in all environments. Design tweaks include the addition of a more aggressively styled front bumper, a grille design inspired by other Toyota GR models and new sports-style BBS forged aluminium wheels. Inside, the Daihatu’s seats are replaced with performance-oriented Recaro items, while the speedometer and rev counter are redesigned to reinforce the car’s sporting ambitions. There are eight colour options for the exterior, but the Copen GR Sports’ interior can only be specified in black. The Copen’s 660cc turbocharged three-cylinder engine is retained, sending power to the front wheels through a five-speed manual or seven-speed CVT gearbox. The model is currently unavailable outside Japan, with domestic prices starting from 2,380,000 yen, equivalent to roughly

News Roundup: Schwarzenegger sets teenage activist up with Tesla, Chevy unveils C8 convertible and more
Welcome to our weekly round-up of the biggest breaking stories on Driving.ca from this past week. Get caught up and ready to get on with the weekend, because it’s hard keeping pace in a digital traffic jam. Here’s what you missed while you were away. When Arnold met GretaWhen Arnold Schwarzenegger was introduced to 16-year-old climate activist Greta Thunberg at a European environmental summit earlier this year, he was thoroughly impressed. (Join the club, Arnold.) And then, when he learned she’d be making a North American tour, he offered to set his new friend up with one of the greenest ways to get around: a Tesla Model 3. Thunberg travelled to Montreal to participate in the climate strike along with approximately 500,000 others, and is continuing on to other events elsewhere in North America. 70-year-old B.C. driver given ticket for having cell phone in cup holderWhere do you keep your cell phone when you’re driving? Obviously, it’s illegal to hold it in your hand and use it – that’s distracted driving – but one senior citizen in B.C. was shocked to receive a ticket this week for having her smartphone charging in a cup holder. Randi Kramer, who’s had a clean driving record for the last 50 years or so, was issued a $368 ticket for distracted driving, despite not being distracted by her phone at all. Kramer plans to fight the ticket and her story has already got the attention of a local lawyer. The new C8 convertible arrives with folding hardtopThe 2020 Chevy Corvette Stingray was unveiled this week, and unlike the initial C8 launch that nearly broke the internet earlier this summer, there’s not so much to report on. The new model will be available with a folding hardtop only, and be powered by the same plant as the coupe: a 6.2-litre 490-horsepower V8. Chevy chose to reveal the convertible at the Kennedy Space Center’s Rocket Garden in Orlando, Florida as a nod to all the astronauts who’ve driven ‘Vettes over the years. The 2020 Corvette convertible will start at $78,998 when it arrives in Canada next spring. Watch Tesla owners damage their cars using the new Smart Summon featureA new software update downloaded into Teslas around the world last weekend, teaching the electric vehicles a highly anticipated new trick. Smart Summon automatically pilots empty cars across parking lots or driveways to their drivers, who summon them with the press of a button on an app. But despite the word “Smart” being right there in the name, and Tesla officially reminding driver they “are still responsible for (their) car and must monitor it and its surroundings at all times,” the new feature has occasionally hit a few snags. Or, more accurately, other vehicles and garage doors. Check out some of the Smart Summon fails caught on camera and already making the rounds online. Russian YouTuber tests how many spokes your car wheel actually needsHow many spokes is enough spokes? Sure, all of them would be ideal, but when push came to shove, how many could you still drive with? Like, if you literally pushed and shoved (or cut) the spokes off the wheels, like this Russian YouTuber did, how far would you get? Turns out, pretty far! The Garage 54 YouTube channel, which is dedicated to these kind of automotive “torture tests,” fits an old car with a bunch of tires with a varying number of the alloy spokes removed, and basically drives around on them until they break. The language dubbing is bearable, but the video itself is highly

First Look: 2020 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray Convertible
The launch of the 2020 C8 Chevrolet Corvette held, we have to admit, plenty of surprises for us. It started around $70,000 in Canada and promised a zero-to-96 km/h time of under 3.0 seconds. We expected the C8 to be competitive, but I dont think many were expecting that. But the reveal of the C8 convertible? Not so surprising. Chevy chose to reveal the C8 drop-top in the Kennedy Space Centers Rocket Garden in Orlando, Florida.Thats partly because rockets are just plain cool, but moreso because astronauts have been driving Corvettes for almost as long as there have been astronauts. Alan Shepard, Alan Bean, Neil Armstrong and many others famously owned examples of the classic plastic sports car.But lets talk about the car itself. For starters, it gets the same 6.2-litre 490-hp V8 as the coupe, which makes it the most powerful Corvette base model ever. The top is a folding hardtop arrangement, and no soft-top will be available. According to engineers, the tops six motors, linkages and hinges add a reasonable 35 kg to the total weight of the C8.Like most modern convertibles (and especially mid-engined ones) there are twin nacelles behind the driver headrests. Chevy says they hearken back to the faired-in headrests of 1950s prototypes and visually connect the top of the windshield to the rear of the car, but we think the less-sexy reason for them is simply to provide more rollover protection. Nonetheless, they are well-executed and not an eyesore. And while the C8 coupe shows off its engine under glass, the vert obscures it, since the roof is stored on top of the engine compartment when folded down. To accommodate the thermal demands this covering-up adds, some rather stylish vents have been sliced into the top of the rear deck for engine cooling. And, yes, even with the top stored, you can fit two sets of golf clubs in the C8. Sigh.Impressive numbers? Well, the C8 vert has plenty. The coupe starts at about $70,000 in Canada, and the new convertible will begin at $78,998 when it arrives here. Production of the C8 will start in January, and deliveries will happen two months after that. But that wasnt all Chevy revealed among the rockets; it also pulled out a very fierce-looking C8.R race car. Flared and spoilered, wearing massive slicks and roll cage, the C8.R is very much the real deal. Chevy was reticent to divulge technical details about the C8.R, but said it would compete at Petite Le Mans soon. One thing to note about it: It sounded for all the world like a flat-plane-crank engine. We dont know whats under the hood, but it does not sound like a typical cross-plane

The emperor of Japan is getting a convertible Toyota Century
Theres a new emperor in town, and apparently, his new groove is going topless.Topless vehicle that is! Yes, after 30 years of the Heisei Era ended and the Reiwa Era began, its also time for a new car to carry the royal family to the succession ceremony on October 22. This time its a real doozy, a convertible Toyota Century.Toyota doesnt make a Century convertible for the masses, but when the emperor of a country especially the country where your company originated wants one, you would be hard-pressed to refuse.According to Japanese Nostalgic Car, the vehicle is officially a royal parade car, and so has been fitted with parade appropriate features. Obviously, the roof has been removed, but the Century remains a four-door, with four seats. The rear seats have been raised 4 centimetres and are fixed at a 25-degree angle for onlookers to get an unobstructed view of the royals. Other than the modifications, the car is a stock, third-generation Toyota Century, which despite its mundane appearance, is one of the most impressive vehicles ever made. The paint is carefully applied with seven layers, and then wet-sanded three times. The front grille emblem is carved by hand over a six-week process. This is the first new parade car in 30 years, with the previous being a 1990 Rolls-Royce Corniche III which was only used twice. After the Century carries Emperor Naruhito through the 4.6-kilometre route from the Imperial palace through Tokyo to Akasaka Palace, it will be displayed in Tokyo and Kyoto and will be used for special occasions like the 2020

The Ferrari 812 GTS is the world’s most powerful convertible
Ferraris new 812 GTS has just taken its top off to win the title of most powerful production convertible and reopens a bloodline that hasnt been on the books since the 60s.Ferrari was pretty late to the game with this one, waiting for Aston Martin, Lamborghini and Bentley to release wind-in-your-hair versions of their cars before revealing this drop-top Superfast in early September. But none of that matters now, because Modena has reclaimed the crown for the most powerful convertible. It might sound hard to believe, but its been 50 years since Ferrari has offered a production front-engined V12 convertible. Yes, the 365 GTB Daytona was the last car to have the honour, but the V12 has come a long way since Colombo worked his magic. The honour now, of course, comes courtesy of its 6.5-litre V12, which makes 789 horsepower and 530 lb.-ft. of torque. The engine can nail 8,900 rpm in the blink of an eye, and hit 100 km/h in under 3.0 seconds; 200 km/h in just 8.3 seconds; and rush onward to a top speed of 340 km/h. As for the top itself, it can be raised or lowered in just 14 seconds at speeds up to 50 km/h. When lowered, flying buttresses fill the gap behind your head.Ferrari also recently debuted the drop-top version of its brand-new F8 Tributo, with a 710-horsepower V8 thats guaranteed to mess up your perm. The F8 Tributo is not a revival of the classic Ferrari layout but follows a long, unbroken lineage of rear-engined V8 supercars with drop-tops.All the excellence of looking like Sonny Crockett will cost you, however; the 812 GTS starts at 336,000 ($488,609) and goes up from

Volkswagen T-Roc Cabriolet is only mainstream convertible SUV
Volkswagen is carving itself a new niche with the unveiling of the T-Roc Cabriolet, the only mainstream crossover with a fully convertible roof. Claimed to bring an “extroverted and emotive design” to the brand’s range, it indirectly replaces the Golf and Beetle cabriolets and will bear the burden of being the only drop-top Volkswagen for the foreseeable future. It’s due to go on sale early next year after a Frankfurt motor show public debut in September, with first deliveries in the spring. Far from chopping the roof off a standard T-Roc, the cabriolet’s body and structure are mostly new, with 37mm added to the wheelbase and a 34mm increase in overall length. As well as the absence of rear doors and a unique rear-end design, there is structural strengthening in the underbody, windscreen frame, side panels, cross members and doors. Engineers are confident that it would achieve a similar five-star score as the hard-top T-Roc in Euro NCAP crash tests. The soft-top itself features a mechanism similar in concept to the outgoing Golf Cabriolet’s, with the roof stowing in an exposed compartment above the boot rather than under a panel. This allows it to be one of the fastest-opening roofs on sale, retracting in just nine seconds via a switch on the centre console or the key at vehicle speeds of up to 19mph. The T-Roc Cabriolet’s roof design is also space efficient, allowing for two usable rear seats with enough leg and head room for six-footers to be comfortable on short journeys and a well-shaped 284-litre boot (161 litres down on the standard crossover). VW claims noise levels are kept low by specially developed door and roof seals. Only two engines, both petrol, will be offered with the cabriolet at launch: a 113bhp 1.0-litre three-cylinder engine and a 148bhp 1.5-litre four-cylinder unit. The 1.0 has a six-speed manual only, but the 1.5 can be mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic. VW has yet to release official performance and efficiency figures or confirm the kerb weight of either variant. There are no plans for diesel engines to be offered. Two trims – Design and R-Line – will be available in the UK. Options will include a wind deflector, mounted over the rear seats, that stows in its own compartment under the boot floor. Prices will be announced next year, but bosses claim it will start from “well under” £30,000. QA with Jurgen Stackmann, VW board member for sales, marketing, aftersales There’s lots of talk about this car being an expression of Volkswagen’s emotive side, rather than a pure business decision. Is that the case? “The concept only has reason to exist because of that. The convertible is the ultimate expression of emotional mobility. It’s got lost in the last few years. The (sales) momentum for convertibles is over. “The opportunity to combine what people really want now – a C-UV (C-segment utility vehicle) – with a cabriolet that has a long-standing tradition in the Volkswagen brand was a great opportunity. For us, it had to look good, so we decided after seeing the first prototype to build it. From a rational side, you would never go into the cabriolet market.” Will this be the only convertible model from Volkswagen that we’ll be seeing for now? “Purely from a convertible point of view, that’s our car. It’s meant to please customers in the UK and Germany (the two biggest drop-top markets). If there’s anything ‘open’, it’ll be very different. It’ll be things we’ve discussed like the ID Buggy.” Will you do an R version of the T-Roc Cabriolet? “R is about high power, high performance and four-wheel drive, and we don’t think any of those are right for this. It would have very limited appeal on the market, so we

Dealership creates the convertible Challenger that Dodge won’t
A North Carolina dealership has created the Challenger convertible that Dodge wont build from the factory.Ford and Chevrolet have convertible versions of their modern pony cars, but Dodge has never personally stepped up to the game and created its own, and its seeming more unlikely as the platform ages.Tired of waiting, Keffer Dodge, Chrysler, Ram and Jeep sent three Challengers off to a shop named Convertible Builders in Florida, which chopped off the top and added a soft fabric version that opens and closes with the push of a button.According to Motor Authority, the conversions were done to a standard Challenger and two R/T Scat Pack models, one fitted with the 485-horsepower 6.4-litre HEMI V8; and the other with a 5.7-litre V8 that makes 375 horsepower. All three come with automatic transmissions for optimum cruising. The gray, white, and red cars are listed at US$64,000, US$60,000 and US$56,300, respectively. That means that the conversion of the vehicle to convertible costs about US$16,000 on top of the base price of an automatic Challenger.Theres no telling what Convertible Builders has done to improve the structural integrity of the Challenger so it can handle the loss of a roof, but from the name of its shop, we can guess this isnt their first rodeo. Perhaps in the future, these conversions will even be seen as a classic move, and command a premium for their

Don’t forget about the C8 Corvette convertible
The mid-engined 2020 Corvette has debuted to some serious fanfare (and criticism, but well ignore that for now), but Chevrolet actually discreetly revealed two cars, which you might not have even noticed.Famously, the Corvette has always come in two body styles, Coupe with Targa roof (or T-tops) and a convertible, and the C8 is no exception.During Chevrolets presentation to reveal the revolutionary C8 Corvette, they waited until the very end to share the convertible version with us, and we have to say, it looks great. The flying buttresses make a comeback for the first time since the C3, replacing the glass roof panel that would have let you peek at the engine. Instead of a removable roof panel, the photos show that the top likely folks underneath a panel that doubles as an engine cover. No official details were provided for the convertible variant, but we can expect it will have the same 490-horsepower 6.2-litre V8 coupled to an eight-speed automatic transmission as the standard coupe, along with the Z51 package that adds another 5 horsepower. Traditionally, a convertible variant of a sports car has a slower 0-100 time, but since the C8 started life as a Targa, theres a possibility that it may not be affected. As for the price, the Corvette C8 convertible will likely command a small premium over the standard Targa style as it has done in the past, usually about $5,000. Availability has not been announced, but it took a while for Chevrolet to release the convertible version of the C7 as well, so well wait with bated breath

The Emperor’s new groove is a Toyota Century convertible
Toyota CenturyDerek McNaughton Japanese Crown Prince Naruhito will be ascending to the throne his father Emperor Akihito has recently abdicated, and to get to the ceremony, he’ll be riding in a very special one-off Toyota Century Convertible. According to the Wall Street Journal, the Crown Prince Naruhito commissioned the special one-off vehicle for his coronation ceremony, set to take place on the 1st of May. This is the first time Toyota has ever built a convertible version of the luxury car. The Toyota Century is known for its posh interior and quiet ride. Toyota takes great pride in building the Century and thus, only 50 are built per month. The cost usually runs about US$180,000, but Naruhito’s will undoubtedly cost more. While the styling may still be classic, the bodywork is a distraction from the last-gen Lexus LS hybrid hiding underneath. The hood of the Century is hiding a whisper quiet 5.0-litre hybrid V8 that can command a total of 425 hp and 376 lb.-ft. of torque when the right foot goes down. Limited information about the vehicle is available, so we’re not sure if it’s going to feature a folding canvas or metal roof, or if it’s simply going to be a Toyota Century with no roof, a Century Roadster if you will. It was originally thought that Naruhito might use the same vehicle for his coronation that he used when he got married in 1993: a black Rolls-Royce Corniche Convertible. However, since he and Crown Princess Masako were married some 25 years ago, the old Rolls has fallen into disrepair, and parts proved too difficult to source. While the special one-off will be used for just one occasion, Prince Naruhito will continue to use a regular Toyota Century for his daily
