General Motors could revive Hummer as electric SUV brand

American automotive giant General Motors (GM) is considering a revival of the Hummer brand for a new line of premium electric SUVs and pick-up trucks, according to Reuters.  The company is reportedly aiming to put a new range of large luxury EVs, codenamed BT1, into production at its Detroit-Hammtramck factory by the end of 2021. The first BT1 model, currently known as Project O, is said to be a pick-up for an as-yet-undetermined brand, with internal sources suggesting use of the Hummer name is “under consideration”. It will be followed by a hardcore performance version in 2022.  Claimed to also be in development are an electric pick-up for GMC and an electric SUV for Cadillac. Both are set to arrive in 2023.  GM is investing $7.7 billion (£5.9bn) into preparing its US factories for the shift to electrification over the next four years, with the Detroit-Hammtramck facility being upgraded at a cost of $3bn (£2.3bn) to produce electric trucks and vans.  The large EVs will sit stop a new skateboard-style chassis, similar to that of start-up company Rivian, which combines motors and batteries for cheaper production costs. Around 80,000 units per year are expected to be produced. Regarding GM’s choice to develop premium EVs before more affordable models, Auto Forecast Solutions’ Sam Fiorani told Reuters: “It makes perfect sense to hit the high end of the market in order to generate some revenue that might actually turn a profit.” Such a move, he noted, has proved lucrative for Tesla, which launched with the low-volume Roadster before going on to rival BMW and Mercedes-Benz with the Model S.  GM recently ended production of the Chevrolet Volt plug-in hybrid, citing a decline in demand for saloon models. Its replacement, the Bolt, is an electric hatchback that’s expected to cost its maker between $8000-$9000 per unit as a result of the augmented cost of EV production compared to that of conventionally powered cars.  Production of the iconic Hummer H2 and smaller H3 ended in 2009, as GM eyed a return to profit following a high-profile bankruptcy announcement.  The BT1 electric pick-up is likely to be priced to compete with the Rivian RS1 and could beat Tesla’s long-awaited truck to

Could Dodge be building a track-capable Challenger ACR?

The entire automotive world was saddened to learn Dodges crazy V10-powered supercar, the Viper, was going to die in 2017. The Vipers departure left a gap in the companys lineup, too, for a new track-focused sports car. Now, it seems like Dodge might be gearing up to convert one of its mainstay vehicles into a track-ready weapon the Challenger.According to sources speaking to MoparInsiders.com, Dodge could be bringing the ACR (American Club Racer) trim from the Viper back to its Challenger lineup, for the models 50th anniversary. This isnt the first time well have seen an ACR-type take on a Challenger, however. Back in 2011, the brand built a concept vehicle for SEMA featuring lightweight components made from carbon-fibre, plus some neat aero bits. The concept was never made a reality due to manufacturing cost, but now seems just as good a time as any to revitalize the lineup once again, as Dodge did with the Demon in 2018. The Challenger isnt foreign to road racing. Back in the 1970s, it dominated the Trans Am field at the hands of Sam Posey, and its sister car, the Cuda, didnt do too bad, either. Just like in the 70s, a Challenger ACR could do battle with the likes of the Ford Mustang GT350 and the Chevrolet ZL1 1LE.With the Challenger platform getting very old at this point, Dodge will be looking for ways to keep the vehicle interesting until its re-designed in 2023. Whether it will actually happen remains to be seen, but we can already envision a lime-green Challenger with Minilite wheels coming to a track near

GM reaches tentative deal with UAW that could end month-long national strike

Members of the United Auto Workers (UAW) who are employed at the General Motors Flint Assembly plant in Flint, Michigan, slow down salary employees entering the plant as they strike early on September 16, 2019.Jeff Kowalsky / AFP via Getty General Motors and the United Auto Workers have reached a tentative agreement on a new contract, and the union will decide Thursday whether to continue a more than month-long strike while the deal is voted on by members. The accord, announced by the UAW on Wednesday, may bring an end to the unions first national walkout against the carmaker in a dozen years. The UAWs national council will decide whether to recommend the agreement for a ratification vote, and if the strike will continue in the meantime.A resolution would come none too soon for GM, which analysts estimate has lost about US$2 billion, and its striking workers, who could be forgoing about US$2,000 of profit sharing. The two sides moved closer to a deal over the weekend after a tense week of publicly exchanging barbs and blame for the strike dragging on. With most of the major issues settled, GM CEO Mary Barra and President Mark Reuss joined the talks Tuesday to try to get a final agreement over the line, according to people familiar with the situation who asked not to be identified. One of the most contentious issues that was standing the way of a deal involved the treatment of temporary workers, some of whom have worked at GM for as long as four years. The two sides reached a compromise opening a path to full-time work after three consecutive years of employment, one of the people said. That three-year period could change before an agreement is final, the person cautioned. If the two sides come to an agreement, the local union leaders will decide whether to take it to members for a vote, and if workers will return to work before or after ratification.

Recalled Toyota Supras could be replaced with completely new car

2020 Toyota SupraHandout / Toyota A recent recall filed by BMW reveals the seat-belt guide-loop mounts on seven Toyota Supra coupes yes, the German automaker builds that Japanese sports car could be faulty.Normally, a recall would require the vehicle be brought into a dealership to be fixed, but this time, it might not be so simple. The vehicles will be inspected and if a defective seat belt guide loop mount is found, the vehicle will be replaced, reads the recall.Yes, this time the entire vehicle may apparently have to be replaced, just because of one faulty part. This seems excessive, but when it comes to safety, poor welds on a part like this could cost somebody their life. If the drivers safety belt guide loop mount was not welded to specifications, then in a crash of sufficient severity, the mount could become damaged and may not restrain the driver as designed which would increase the risk of injury to the driver, the recall explains. The reason for the faulty welds is that the supplier used inadequate parts for the welding tool, and because its welded to the frame, its not something that can easily be replaced.Four of the seven vehicles identified as having faulty welds have been fixed, er, replaced already; Toyota will contact the remaining three vehicle owners to have their vehicle inspected for the issue. Toyota says if the faulty welds are present, the vehicle will be replaced free of

Lamborghini’s fourth model could be an all-electric 2+2

Lamborghini is plotting to add a fourth model to its insane lineup. Sports cars, hypercars and SUVs are all covered in its range, so what it needs now is a four-seat grand tourer. And, since its 2019, probably a battery-powered one, says a new Autocar report. If you look at the timing for a fourth model line, there is the potential that this will be the right time for a full-electric vehicle, according to Lamborghini RD boss Maurizio Reggiani. The vehicle is rumoured to drop in 2025, which would coincide with parent company Volkswagen’s planned onslaught of electric supremacy. Its very possible, also, that the vehicle will use VWs PPE platform, the one that underpins the Porsche Taycan, the Audi eTron GT and a rumoured forthcoming all-electric Bentley. Performance will be important (in a 2+2). We must be fast but not quite in the same way as we need to be in our super-sports cars, Reggiani told the magazine. A fourth model line will be something a little bit different.Because of the nature of a grand touring automobile, the EV would have to have a range of at least 600 km, and by 2025 that doesnt seem like much of a stretch. The acceleration would also have to rival what Tesla is putting out these days, which means under 3.0 seconds to 100 km/h from zero.Apparently nobody knows what words mean anymore, because its unclear if the vehicle would be a four-door or a coupe. Bosses at Lamborghini are calling it a 2+2, indicating its a two-door vehicle with seats behind the driver and passenger. However, the styling is said to take after the Estoque concept, which is a four-door. Perhaps the Estoque will be considered in the design process, losing two of its doors to become a svelte, modern take on the Lamborghini Espada. We can only

Incoming U.S. regulations mean Teslas could fart at you

Tesla Model 3 Starting September 2020, electric vehicles sold in the U.S. will be required to make an artificial noise while traveling under 30 km/h, for the safety of pedestrians who may otherwise not hear the near-silent vehicles. While most car companies will probably fit their EVs with some kind of whirring or fake engine noise, its well-noted Tesla CEO Elon Musk thinks normal is just a setting on a washing machine. That explains why Musk said in a Tweet that Tesla vehicles will be able to make much more fun noises, like coconuts being used to imitate horse clip-clops; goat bleats; and, er farts.💨 🐐 sounds too (also, of course) Elon Musk (@elonmusk) October 6, 2019The coconuts mention is a reference Monty Python and the Quest for the Holy Grail; in the dry British comedy, King Arthurs servant clicks two coconut half-shells together in lieu of Arthur riding a real horse. As for the farts, were not sure theres a real impetus for their inclusion, other than the fact theyre hilarious, as are goats bleating. The feature was added to the Model 3 last month, and the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recently proposed new rules that would allow the customization of the sounds used. On top of these heads-up noises, Tesla car horn sounds may similarly be made customizable, The Verge reports. Laws vary state to state, but most suggest as long as the horn can be heard from 200 feet away and arent an unreasonably loud or harsh sound or a whistle, youre okay. That theoretically means you can make your car fart constantly or on command win-win!While everybody is having fun in North America, it seems like the Europeans will have to do with much more boring options, as usual. While their rules will come into place in 2021, they state electric vehicles should sound similar to the sound of a vehicle of the same category equipped with an internal combustion engine, prompting us to make a fart of a different

Ford’s Mustang-inspired ‘Mach-E’ SUV could debut November: rumours

Ford’s all-new Mustang-inspired fully-electric performance utility arrives in 2020 with targeted range of 480 kms.Handout / Ford Ford may finally be pulling the covers off of its Mach E electric utility vehicle in November, at the L.A. Auto Show late in the month, according to a recent report.Rumours first covered by blog Seeking Alpha put the alleged reveal date at November 19, just before the big show in the very-green-car-centric state. The long-talked-about Mustang-inspired battery-driven SUV has the potential to be a hit in California, one of North Americas largest markets for EVs, so the report has real legs.A reveal like this could have been held over for the Detroit auto show in January in the past, but with that show moving to June, now, automakers may be stacking a few big unveils up for L.A. Weve also heard rumours the 2021 Bronco may peek out from under the sheets in L.A., too, though it feels like a reveal that big would be more suited to Detroit. Of course, theres always a chance Ford might pull off both in L.A., or give us a big teaser of the much-anticipated SUV.We dont much about the Mach E just yet, save for its battery range, said to be in excess of 300 miles (480 km). Expectations are for the electric SUV to start production in April 2020 before showing up in dealerships in December with a price tag circa US$40,000.Wed assume Ford will offer a number of different versions of the thing, too, and a variety of battery pack sizes at different price points. The same Seeking Alpha report pins the Audi eTron Sportbacks reveal at the L.A. New Land Rover Defender could get remote control for off-roading

The 2020 Land Rover DefenderLand Rover Land Rover’s redesigned 2020 Defender sports some impressive tech, but the automaker isnt stopping with whats already included its still whipping up more features that really think outside the box.Literally, Land Rover wants you to be outside its boxy truck when the going gets tough, and is working on new technology to allow drivers to remotely control their Defender. The idea is when youre off-roading, youll be able to see difficult obstacles much easier if youre not stuck behind the wheel or just using the various camera systems. This is more than just a parking feature the tech would actually allow drivers to step out of their Defender and control the steering, throttle and braking, reports Autocar. While Land Rover is still working on it, presumably it would be controlled by a key fob or with a smartphone. There are other factors to work out as well, such as how fast the vehicle should be allowed to travel, how far away the driver needs to be, and if it can be turned off quickly and safely.Although this is all super-cool tech, that doesnt necessarily mean itll be hitting the showrooms soon. Theres still a mountain of red tape the tech must go through before it can be approved for use on the road, or off.Stuart Frith, the firms chief product engineer, said in conversation with Autocar weve got as far as understanding how to do it, and weve run prototypes as well.Hopefully, the tech passes inspection just as BMW has finished its parking assist technology, and Tesla wraps its Smart Summon

Micra Cup: The little race series that could

The masterminds behind the Micra Cup: series founder/promoter Jacques Deshaies and Nissan Canadas Didier Marsaud.Andrew McCredie BOWMANVILLE, Ontario In 2014, Nissan Canada had the daunting task of reintroducing the Micra after a two decade-plus absence. That fourth-generation model was already four years old when it arrived here that year, and its most notable feature was its price: with a base model under $10,000 it was the least expensive new vehicle in Canada. Viewed another way, the cheapest.Needless to say, positioning the Mexican-built, 1.6-litre four-door sedan would be a challenge for Nissan Canada execs like Didier Marsaud. That is until Quebec journalist Jacques Deshaies came calling with a crazy idea.Five years later at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park and on the eve of the 62nd race in the Nissan Micra Cup, the two men reflected on the wild ride of establishing a racing series that has become part of the Canadian racing ladder system. We created the Micra Cup because we were bringing back a model to Canada that had not been here for 23 years with a name that most people did not know or remember, explained Marsaud, Nissan Canadas director of corporate communications. And as it was the least expensive car in the Canadian market, we wanted to demonstrate that this car is fun, reliable and works. The exclusive-to-Canada series features six race weekends in Ontario and Quebec between May and September, with drivers competing in 109-horsepower Nissan Micra base model S cars that are equipped identically. The appeal to drivers is two-fold: as a true spec style series what separates winners from losers is the driver, not the car; and for about $30,000 you can compete in the entire series. Plus, unlike so many feeder series, the Micra Cup gets exposure on TV and social media. For the first time at Circuit Mont-Tremblant, the two races this weekend will be aired live on the series Facebook page (Coupe Nissan Micra Cup) and on its YouTube channel, Micra Cup TV.Goals set, and achievedFor Deshaieswho has owned a race team, driven race cars and served as president of the 2004 Trois-Rivieres Grand Prixhis goal when he pitched the idea to Marsaud, and eventually then-Nissan Canada president Christian Meunier, was at the five-year mark to try and convince the young drivers in karting that their next step up the racing ladder is Micra Cup.Looking at the current grid, and noting that he signed up two young karters for next season just a day earlier, the affable Quebecer said he has achieved that goal. In fact, this weekends season finale double-header at Circuit Mont-Tremblant sees rookie Marco Signoretti, a former karting, battling series veteran Kevin King, a karting instructor, for the overall drivers championship.Likewise, Marsaud said he and Nissan had achieved their goal. And that was to raise awareness about the Micra.I love motorsport and a lot of people in Nissan Canada love motorsport, but our job is not to do motorsport, he said. Our job is to sell cars.Canadian-made grassrootsThe success of the Micra Cup hasnt gone unnoticed by others in the company, notably Nissan Global Motorsport Director Michael Carcamo. When Didier brought us the concept, we were over the moon, he told me in the Nissan pits at the Brooklyn Formula E race in August. It was really going back to the grassroots, an opportunity to give people something that we dont think is very common today. And thats an accessible racing platform. And making it a one-series highlights on one side the fact that we can produce a reliable and great racecar at a low cost. And at the same time the drivers get to be the stars of winning the race. And as Deshaies notes, when a manufacturer invests in a race series with one or two cars, sometimes they win, but most likely they dont. In the Micra Cup, each race the podium is three Nissans.Drivers’ thumbs upRacer Kevin King missed the opening race of the first season, but has competed in every race since, and he said that what has impressed him the most about the Micra Cupapart from the intense on-track competitionis how Nissan has supported the series. When the program started there was lots of talk about a lot of PR, and that Nissan (Canada) was going all in, the Trois-Rivieres native said. Throughout the years you have seen they are putting in a lot of effort, and I know all the drivers really appreciate that. Valrie Limoges has also been driving in the series since that first season, and she echoes Kings sentiment about the quality of the competition, adding she loves the fact that its a driver-focused series. There are some things drivers and crews can do on the set up of the cartire pressures and suchbut its mostly the driver, she said. I have learned that I am really, really competitive in my mind and that I really love racing. I have more expectations that will hopefully lead to something good in the future.Western alienationAs to any regrets, Deshaies said his only one is not being

Jaguar could revive C-X75 concept as next-gen F-Type

One of many stumbling blocks to developing the new sports car is the platform itself, which – if to be designed from scratch and bespoke to the model – would require lots of cash and resources at an uncertain time for Jaguar Land Rover. The company lost £395 million in the last financial quarter and hopes models such as the updated Jaguar XE, new Range Rover Evoque and heavily revised Land Rover Discovery Sport can offset significant recent investments and a slump in demand from China.  One cost-effective solution is to again join forces with BMW. The British and German makers recently announced they would develop and assemble electric drive units for future models together, but already sources suggest BMW will supply combustion engines to JLR too. As previously revealed by Autocar, JLR may also use BMW’s FAAR front-driven platform for a range of compact models, including Land Rover SUVs.  BMW bosses are said to be deciding whether to turn the next-generation i8 into a fully electric sports car. Prototypes of such a model have already undergone testing, according to a Munich-based engineering source. By sharing development of an EV sports car platform, BMW and JLR could considerably reduce costs while at the same time pooling engineering expertise and resources.  Another alternative is to make use of Jaguar’s well-proven electric car platform used in the I-Pace. This would require investment to adapt it for a different purpose, but EV platforms tend to be easier to modify to suit different bodystyles and drive configurations than ICE ones.  With Callum’s departure, the F-Type has immediately become his legacy in terms of Jaguar sports cars. With global sales of around 62,000 (70% in coupé form, 30% as convertibles), the model has helped rebuild Jaguar’s reputation as a maker of alluring sports cars – as it also strives to become renowned for other types of car such as SUVs. While the F-Type’s sales continue to significantly trail those of class leaders such as the Porsche 911, Callum is adamant that a successor is integral to the brand. “We will also do sports cars,” he said. “End of story.”  The C-X75 was a groundbreaking supercar originally conceived to use jet turbines as generators for an electric propulsion system when Jaguar first unveiled the concept in 2010. Working prototypes were then produced that instead used a more conventional petrol-electric hybrid system.  But by the end of 2012, the decision was taken to pull the plug on the whole project, meaning Callum’s highly praised exterior design never made it to
