BMW driver death sees Takata recall another 1.4 million airbags

A cross-section of a steering wheel showing the airbag.Handout / Mercedes-Benz Takata, the parts supplier behind the largest auto recall ever, told U.S. safety regulators another 1.4 million vehicles need to be repaired over a defect linked to the death of a BMW driver and two other injuries in overseas markets.Components Takata supplied to five of the worlds biggest car manufacturers may absorb moisture that could either cause air bags to rupture or under-inflate, according to a notice on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administrations website. The recall involves parts produced from 1995 through 1999 and sold to BMW, Audi, Toyota, Honda and Mitsubishi.BMW issued three recalls covering roughly 116,000 U.S. vehicles containing the parts and recommended roughly 8,000 of those should not be driven until theyre fixed, the NHTSA said in a statement. The luxury-car maker is aware of one fatality and one injury in Australia linked to the faulty air-bag inflators, plus another injury in Cyprus, according to filings with the agency. The company told the NHTSA in November it hadnt received reports of similar incidents in the U.S. The callbacks and fatality disclosed Wednesday are the latest twist in a years-long saga that landed Takata in bankruptcy two years ago. The Japanese manufacturer supplied tens of millions of defective air-bag inflators for years that were prone to exploding in a crash and injuring or killing car occupants by spraying metal shards. Takata pleaded guilty as part of a US$1-billion settlement with the U.S. Justice Department over its handling of the issue.Takata was purchased in April 2018 by a unit of Chinas Ningbo Joyson Electronic Corp., and the combined unit was renamed Joyson Safety Systems.Past Takata recalls were blamed on its use of ammonium nitrate as a propellant to inflate air bags in the event of a crash. For its latest safety campaign, the company is citing a manufacturing issue that affected inflators containing a non-azide propellant. The parts maker said it produced and sold 4.45 million of the inflators globally during the time period covered by the recall. According to Takatas safety recall report to the NHTSA, the number of inflators it produced for vehicles sold in the U.S. was substantially smaller but is not precisely known at this time. Because of the age of the potentially affected vehicles, only a portion remain in service, the company said.BMW is the only carmaker to have issued vehicle recalls in the U.S. over the inflators so far.Honda is trying to understand which models are affected and cant say how many vehicles are impacted, a spokeswoman for the company said. A Mitsubishi spokesman said the company is identifying the models and countries involved, though the NHTSA said only the Mitsubishi Montero is affected in the U.S.Toyota is investigating the issue and working with the NHTSA and Joyson, a spokeswoman for the automaker said. Joyson representatives couldnt immediately be reached for comment. Audis U.S. unit is cooperating with NHTSA and investigating whether some its U.S. vehicles from model years 1997 through 1999 are affected, a spokeswoman said by

Death in fiery wreck blamed on Tesla’s hideaway door handles

Teslas retractable door handles are being blamed for the death of a man in Florida, who was consumed by a fire in his car when a police officer responding to the incident couldnt get the door open, Automotive News reports.According to the wrongful death lawsuit, 48-year-old anesthesiologist Omar Awan lost control of his leased Tesla in February on a south Florida parkway. The vehicle slammed into a palm tree and burst into flames. When officers arrived, the door handles were retracted, and all they and bystanders could do was watch the car fill with smoke. The cause of death was listed as smoke inhalation; Awan sustained no injuries from the crash. The fire allegedly originated from the batteries, which in a Tesla are below the floor.Fire engulfed the car and burned Dr. Awan beyond recognition all because the Model S has inaccessible door handles, no other way to open the doors, and an unreasonably dangerous fire risk, according to the suit. The handles are supposed to extend when it senses the key fob in the drivers hands, but it doesnt always go so smoothly. In fact, the door handles are one of items most commonly listed as faulty by Tesla Model S owners, according to Consumer Reports. The design of the door handles has been contentious since its inception. Elon Musk insisted on their inclusion despite the fact during development it was unanimous among the executive staff that the complex door handle idea was crazy, according to a former exec speaking with Wired.Tesla has not offered comment on the

Jeep announces fix for ‘death wobble’

2019 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Sahara 4x4Jil McIntosh Anyone whos spent time behind the wheel of a Jeep Wrangler has heard about the dreaded death wobble. For some, it inhabits the same mythical dimension as Thanos and Freddy Kreuger, while others swear by (and at) their Jeeps propensity to exhibit steering wheel shake after hitting a road hazard. It is important to understand that Wranglers are equipped with a solid log of a front axle, meaning it can display wildly different handling characteristics than a traditionally sprung car or crossover vehicle. Longtime fans of the brand are well aware of this but, thanks to an explosion in popularity, Jeep has been welcoming many new customers to their house, not all of whom are as well versed in the quirks of a Wrangler especially if theyre trading out of a CR-V or RAV4.Now, it seems, Jeep is trying to get ahead of the issue. Those in the know over at the Detroit Free Press have reported FCA execs have announced a solution, one which takes the form of a new steering damper, also known as a stabilizer. Tech compliance officer Mark Chernoby told the Freep that the original damper had a tendency to form air bubbles within the units oil, particularly in cold weather. This reduced the parts ability to do its job namely, preventing the sort of issue about which customers are complaining. The new steering damper, produced by the same supplier as the old one, is said to be designed to let its oil move more freely, helping it quash steering vibrations more quickly. In a quote to the Free Press, Chernoby refused to throw that supplier under the bus, saying We steer away from any kind of blame game or even open discussion on suppliers even on safety recalls. For that, Chernoby gets the Driving.ca Pun of the Year award. The company quietly issued a customer satisfaction campaign in June aimed at addressing this problem. Targeting certain Wrangler JLs in the 2018 and 2019 model years, campaign code V41 attends to several components in the Jeeps steering system, including the steering damper. The fix is not VIN-specific, meaning it should apply across the board on this model. Perhaps unsurprisingly, all but three of the parts involved in this campaign are labelled as being of limited quantity. Just two of the parts were labelled as such the last time your author looked about one month ago. This speaks to FCA completing the campaign for those who ask for it, using up their parts bin in the process.FCA says it will send notifications to Wrangler owners offering to install the new damper if they wish. Jeep has also said theyll be building Wranglers with the new part going forward. It must be noted that, despite the colloquial name of death wobble, the company says there have been no known fatalities associated with the
