New Cupra Formentor hits the road ahead of mid-2020 debut

Seat sister brand Cupra will finally put its first standalone model, the Formentor, on sale in the middle of next year, and new spyshots preview the final car’s design. As expected, the design stays wholly faithful to that of the earlier Geneva motor show concept, with the same profile and surfacing visible beneath this disguise. It’s the second production model to be badged a Cupra following the Cupra Ateca, and the first not to be based on a model from parent firm Seat. Cupra says the Formentor offers “the benefits of a performance car with the qualities of an SUV”. The Formentor takes styling cues from the Seat 20V20 concept shown at Geneva in 2015. As a coupé crossover, it also fits Seat’s vision for Cupra as a ‘premium performance’ brand, rather than as a producer of pure high-performance vehicles. The Formentor sits lower than most crossovers and features a sloping roofline, sharp sculpted lines on the side, a two-tone body and pronounced rear haunches. The front grille of the car takes cues from the Seat Tarraco large SUV, while the rear features a single LED light strip running the length of the car’s boot lid.  While Cupra has yet to provide the Formentor’s dimensions, we know it’s lower, wider and longer than the Ateca on which it’s based in an effort to improve ride and handling as well as looks. .  The concept car presented at Geneva features a 1.4-litre TSI petrol engine mated to an electric motor, providing a combined system output of 242bhp, and a WLTP-certified electric-only range of around 30 miles. The power is delivered via a dual-clutch DSG transmission. The use of a hybrid system such as the fits Seat’s plans to use Cupra as a ‘technological flagship’. Autocar understands a pure petrol version will be offered, too, but it’s not clear yet if this will come at the same time as the launch.  The Formentor features the Volkswagen Group’s DCC chassis set-up system and differential lock along with progressive steering. Cupra says the system has been tuned so that it handles “majestically.” While no interior images have been revealed yet, Cupra says it features a leather-clad steering wheel and bucket seats, dark chrome trim on the dashboard, a digital cockpit and a 10-inch infotainment touchscreen. The Formentor takes its name from a peninsula on Majorca, following parent firm Seat’s convention of naming cars after Spanish geographical features. A production version of the Formentor forms a core part of Cupra’s plans to reach 30,000 sales within three to five years. The brand sold 14,400 models last year, a figure that includes Seat-badged Cupra models such as the Leon Cupra R. Cupra design chief Alejandro Mesonero-Romanos previously told Autocar that the new Formentor was “100% designed as a Cupra”, but added that “there could be Seat versions” of it in the

These car debut fails were absolutely cringe-worthy

In what was easily one of the most meme-able moments of 2019, Tesla revealed its highly hyped Cybertruck at an event in Los Angeles last week, badly damaging two windows in the process of demonstrating the durability of the transparent metal armoured glass.Of course, Tesla isnt the only automaker in history to blow it on a new models big night. Faraday Future and Acura (the latter with help from Ford) have also made some crucial mistakes when the whole world was watching. But the honour of worst new car presentation has to go to Infiniti for its QX reveal. Read on to learn what went wrong at each event, including some insight from Drivings own Jil McIntosh, who was on hand to witness some of the fails.Faraday Future FF91’s self-parking self-ownAll eyes were on California-based EV startup Faraday Future at CES 2017. The company was debuting its first production vehicle and flagship, the FF91, at the tech event, and expected to show off its self-parking abilities. The stunt went well outside the venue, but when the driverless valet button was pressed during the big presentation inside, the car just sat there. Eventually, after a Faraday tech jumped into the car and adjusted some settings, the car pulled itself into the designated spot, but it wasnt enough to stop the headlines from calling it a fail.Insiders later told Jalopnik the mistake was basically due to the demo model not being properly calibrated. Chalked up to technical difficulties, I guess, but maybe a run-through next time, Faraday? Acura NSX gets GT’dDespite Acuras best efforts, there was at least one moment during the big 2015 Acura NSX reveal at the Detroit auto show when those in attendance were more focused on the also-then-brand-new Ford GT supercar.Driving’s Jil McIntosh recalls the event.“Ford’s booth is right across from Acura, and as Acura was starting up the video for the debut, which had Jerry Seinfeld driving, Ford chose that moment to push the GT along the hall to its booth, behind the hundreds of writers who were waiting for the NSX — and who then turned around to look at the GT instead.” “I later asked a Ford rep (about it), who said the timing wasn’t coincidental.”Intiniti’s QX Inspiration fails to launchThere are bad starts, and then there are non-starts. With crowds building in anticipation of the reveal at the 2019 Detroit auto show, Nissan’s luxury brand couldn’t get its new concept started to get it on stage. Technicians were seen fussing around the electric SUV, which blew through its scheduled reveal time and left attendees instead watching janitors mopping the floor. The QX was eventually dragged on stage and revealed officially later that day, but by that time, a lot of the first-impression headlines had already been printed. Dodge Ram cows outChrysler pulled a brilliant stunt at the 2008 Detroit auto show, opening the event and unveiling its new Dodge Ram in the middle of a herd of cattle being pushed up the street by cowboys on horseback.amp;McIntosh, who was in the crowd once again, remembers one moment where the bovine presence backfired slightly. “The Dodge Ram cattle drive in front of Cobo Hall went well, until one steer decided to hump another in the middle of the road … the guy doing the announcing caught it beautifully and said, ‘Looks like someone’s really excited about the new Ram!’”“I was standing right at the barricade, looking to the right. Fortunately Lou Ann Gosselin from Chrysler Canada was beside me looking to the left, and saw a steer coming by. If she hadn’t grabbed me and pulled me back, I would have gotten a horn in the

New Lotus Evija electric hypercar makes dynamic video debut

The new Lotus Evija, an all-electric hypercar claimed to be “the most powerful production car in the world”, has entered its initial build phase at the company’s facility in Norfolk, UK.  The announcement, which comes as the car makes its Chinese public debut at the Guangzhou motor show, also comes as dynamic testing of the car begins at Lotus’ Hethel test track. A new video (below) shows the car being driven at speed for the first time.  Gavan Kershaw, Director of Vehicle Attributes at Lotus, says “Physical prototype testing at speed is a landmark moment for the Evija and hugely exciting for everyone involved. Our aim is to make sure it’s a true Lotus in every sense, with exceptional performance that’s going to set new standards in the hypercar sector.”  While most track testing will be done at Hethel, Lotus claims it will use other demanding European circuits, too. “Over the coming months several prototypes will cover many thousands of miles and hundreds of hours of driving assessment, including on public roads” the maker said in a release. Production will commence fully in the middle of next year.  An output of 1973bhp is promised, which is more than the upcoming 1888bhp Pininfarina Battista and Rimac C_Two, and the 1479bhp internally combusted Bugatti Chiron currently in production.  No more than 130 of the two-seat hypercars will be built, each priced at £2.04 million. “Target specifications” include four-wheel drive, 1254lb ft and torque vectoring, giving it a 0-62mph time of less than three seconds, a 0-186mph time of less than nine seconds and a top speed of 200mph-plus. A production slot can be reserved with a refundable £250,000 deposit.  The Evija, apparently pronounced ‘E-vi-ya’, will be Lotus’s first new-model launch under Geely ownership, and is the maker’s first all-new model for more than a decade. It will be made at the company’s traditional home in Hethel, Norfolk, and will act “as a ‘halo’ for the rest of the Lotus range” both now and for “new Lotus performance cars to come”.  The car pictured here in a studio is for show, but Lotus’s design director, Russell Carr, told Autocar that “this is how it’ll be on the road. This is very much the production car. All the surfaces are made to production level.”  The Evija, which is codenamed Type 130, is low and broad, at 4.59m long, 2.0m wide and 1.12m high. According to Lotus, it “marks the beginning of a contemporary new Lotus design language”.  “We wanted from the start to do something that was pure, simple, but have a sense of luxury and elegance about it,” said Carr. “On the outside, we started by thinking ‘what are the existing factors from the Lotus DNA that we want to keep?’, and really important for us were the strong haunches you see on the car. It’s very important when you’re sitting inside that you can see the corners of the vehicle – it helps you place the car on the track. It’s also just a very emotional thing to see the bodywork; rearwards as well.”  “We have the cabin sat low within those fenders, which are really important to us because the car’s all about dynamics,” said Carr, “and if the cabin sits low and the fenders are pronounced, you have the impression that the car’s got a low centre of gravity.”  Around the overall design simplicity come some advanced aerodynamics (see Carr QA, below), which direct air flow over, under and through the car, creating a complex body shape with vast scoops running through the rear three-quarters, and exiting at the back.  The design is permitted by the adoption of electric drive. “That certainly gives us a lot more freedom, yes,” said Carr. “You’ve obviously got battery packs that can be placed in certain places, and it’s certainly different from a traditional combustion engine, and we’ve tried to exploit that as much as possible.”  Lotus hasn’t yet revealed how many electric motors the car will have or where they’ll be positioned, but its partnership with Williams Advanced Engineering – which is, among other things, the supplier of batteries to the Formula E grid – will be key to the Evija’s performance.  Lotus said the Evija will have a 70kWh battery, capable of being charged at up to 350kW, enabling an 18-minute charge with a WLTP range of around 250 miles. The charge port is at the rear of the car.  Construction is from carbonfibre, both for the chassis and the body. Light weight is core to all Lotus models and the Evija weighs several hundred kilos less than the Battista and C_Two are reported to be, although they have more battery capacity. Even so, at 1680kg, the Evija is likely to become the heaviest Lotus ever. Despite this, Lotus boldly claims it will “set a new standard for Lotus driving performance” and be “the most dynamically accomplished road car in the history of Lotus”.  Inside, the carbonfibre construction remains visible in what’s a relatively spacious cockpit. “The start point is a floating beam, this open instrument panel you can place

Ford’s Mustang Mach E specs leak three days ahead of debut

Fords giving the world its first look at the 2021 Mustang Mach-E on November 17, just ahead of the Los Angeles Auto Show, but wasnt quick enough to get ahead of fans who discovered all the goods on this all-electric crossover three days before they were supposed to.A member of the MachEForum.com tracked down slides intended for the manufacturers consumer site, and grabbed screenshots before Ford caught on and covered them back up.With some of? most of? the cat out of the bag, we can say the cars a looker, with Mustang-inspired styling, an out-there nose with the pony in front and unmistakable taillights that cue up suggestions of its gasoline-fuelled sibling.Theres also a sunroof that covers most of the upper lid, while the dash is dominated by a Tesla-style tablet to control the functions.Depending on whether you choose rear- or all-wheel-drive, and what trim you select, youll get anywhere from about 300 miles (483 km) to 230 miles (370 km) on a single charge. If you get the GT trim with the right options, youll spring from zero to 100 mph (96 km/h) in the mid-three-seconds range, making this one super-quick (electric) Mustang, too.Plug it into a fast charger, and youll have enough power to cover 75 kilometres in just ten minutes. But wait, theres more the slides even included pricing. Its in U.S. dollars, of course, and wont be the same for Canadians, but the Mach E will run from the $43,895 Select trim up to the $60,500 GT, before any state or federal incentives for electric vehicles.Trim levels will include the limited First Edition, which will include exclusive Grabber Blue paint, the ulra-loaded Premium, and the extended-range California Route 1.LISTEN: Toyota has led the hybrid charge for two decades, and as Toyota Canada’s Stephen Beatty tells Plugged In host Andrew McCredie, is now all-in on EVs, particularly fuel cell vehicles. The company’s vice president also has some interesting things to say about some provinces’ push to create electric vehicle sales quotas for 2030, and tells us about Toyota’s fascinating, and potentially game-changing, work with Quebec to produce green hydrogen. 1985bhp Aspark Owl makes debut in Dubai

Japanese manufacturer Aspark has revealed its debut hypercar, which it claims to be “the fastest-accelerating car in the world”. The 1985bhp Owl, which made its public debut in Dubai this week, can achieve 0-60mph in 1.69sec – around 0.6sec faster than a Tesla Model S P100D. This rapid acceleration is delivered by four permanent magnet motors, which generate approximately 1475lb ft of torque. The Owl was originally announced as a concept at the 2017 Frankfurt motor show. The production version will gain an automatically extending spoiler, digital cameras integrated into the wing mirrors and an interior redesign that sees controls and switches moved to the ceiling. A 64kWh lithium ion battery is of a much smaller capacity than those in competing electric hypercars from the likes of Rivian and Lotus, with the aim of reducing weight. The car’s chassis is made from carbonfibre, as is most of its other components, contributing to a dry weight of 1900kg. Although rapid acceleration and a theoretical top speed of 249mph are the Owl’s main selling points, the hypercar is also claimed to be capable of 280 miles of range. Prices for the Owl will start from just under £2.5 million. Aspark will produce only 50 cars globally, with first deliveries beginning in mid-2020. Production is due to take place in Italy, in collaboration with Manifattura Automobili

2020 Porsche 718 Boxster T and Cayman T make North American debut

Are the standard Porsche 718 Boxster and its sister, the 718 Cayman, just too milquetoast for you? Do you simply not have enough consonants in your life? Then the boffins at Porsche have an answer for you, the 718 Boxster T and Cayman T.Filled to the gunwales with performance-enhancing features to sharpen its handling when compared to a non-T Boxster or Cayman, these new models will include the PASM Sport Suspension as standard equipment, along with a mechanical limited-slip diff and Porsche Torque Vectoring. The inclusion of those natty suspenders mean shorter springs are on-board, plus re-tuned adaptive dampers and a ride height thats about an inch closer to terra firma. The Sport Chrono Package is also standard.Just dont go looking for more power. The 718 Boxster T and 718 Cayman T are powered by the same 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder boxer engine as the standard Boxster and Cayman models, developing 300 ponies and 280 lb.-ft. of twist. In conjunction with the optional PDK transmission and using the Launch Control feature, both variants can reach 96 km/h from a standstill in just 4.5 seconds. Mercifully, the standard transmission for the 718 T variants is a six-speed manual gearbox. Top speed is 272km/h.Various trimmings and trappings distinguish the T from other 718s as well. Eagle-eyed spotters will spy the Agate Grey mirror caps and rollover protection bars. Joining the festival, Mr. Ts model designation badges are also this colour.Inside, Sport Seats Plus with pronounced bolsters and Sport Tex fabric are standard, while Full Bucket Seats, normally reserved for GTS and GT4 models, can be optionally ordered. In the grand Porsche tradition of taking things away and then charging more, black fabric door opening loops replace the traditional door handles.Given the extra handling chops of the T, count on it to get ham-fisted drivers out of trouble more easily than the now-admittedly-workaday standard non-T car, a vehicle now completely worthless and one whose owners are busy running it through the nearest wood chipper. The 2020 Porsche 718 Boxster T and 718 Cayman T are available to order now and are expected to reach dealers in summer 2020. South of the border, MSRP for the 718 Cayman T is US$66,400, while the 718 Boxster T retails for US$68,500. Expect a modest increase in those numbers for Canadian

The next-gen 2020 Volkswagen Golf totally leaked ahead of its debut

The 2020 Volkswagen Golf Mk. 8 was leaked late October ahead of its debut. But not just like a low-res teaser thumbnail. Man, we can see everything. The leak comes courtesy of German newspaper Augsburger Allgemeine, which apparently was so excited about the new car of the people it posted it a whole day before it was supposed to be released. At any rate, were glad theres a new Golf, and this new, eighth generation is a real looker. Still instantly recognizable as the classic hatch, the Mk. 8 has slimmer headlights and a revised, smaller grille. The VW logo is as prominent as ever, and cuts into the hood like on a classic Golf. The interior has also been revised, with a new flat-bottom steering wheel and a digital gauge cluster. A free-standing infotainment screen sits atop the stepped dash with illuminated accents. Full specs are still to be revealed, but reportedly the vehicle will come with a wide range of engines, at least in Europe, including a 1.0-litre three-cylinder; 1.5- and 2.0-liter four-cylinders are also coming. A 1.5-litre Compressed Natural Gas unit and an assortment of 2.0-litre diesel models may also be on the table.Obviously, we can expect a GTI version of this new Golf as well, due out next year. The GTI will feature a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder with 232 horsepower, but higher-horsepower variants will be out soon, too, including a 286-horsepower GTI Cup; and a 325-horsepower Golf

Ford’s Mustang-inspired ‘Mach-E’ SUV to debut in November

A teaser of the Ford Mach E electric SUVFord Ford will finally pull the covers off of its Mach E electric utility vehicle in November, just ahead of the L.A. Auto Show late in the month, the automaker said late October. The reveal date will be November 17, about a week before the big show in the very-green-car-centric state. The long-talked-about Mustang-inspired battery-driven SUV has the potential to be a hit in California, one of North Americas largest markets for EVs, so the report has real legs.A reveal like this could have been held over for the Detroit auto show in January in the past, but with that show moving to June, now, automakers may be stacking a few big unveils up for L.A.Weve also heard rumours the 2021 Bronco may peek out from under the sheets in L.A., too, though it feels like a reveal that big would be more suited to Detroit. Of course, theres always a chance Ford might pull off both in L.A., or give us a big teaser of the much-anticipated off-road SUV.We dont much about the Mach E just yet, save for its battery range, said to be in excess of 300 miles (480 km). Expectations are for the electric SUV to start production in April 2020 before showing up in dealerships in December with a price tag circa US$40,000.Wed assume Ford will offer a number of different versions of the thing, too, and a variety of battery pack sizes at different price points.Meanwhile, other rumours pin the Audi eTron Sportbacks reveal at the L.A. Auto Show,

Mazda MX30 gets Tokyo debut

Mazda MX-30 gets Tokyo debut The new crossover is the first production EV from Mazda Mazda has revealed its first production EV at the Tokyo Motor Show – the MX-30. A compact crossover is a new model, rather than an added option for an existing badge. A driving range hasn’t been announced, but the battery pack will be 35.5 kWh so expect something around 130 miles on a single charge. Charging will be via a CCS inlet, with no specs for DC charging – though even 50 kW will see a good top up only take 20 minutes or so. The on-board AC charger is 6.6 kW. With a smaller battery comes shorter charging times and greater efficiency. Mazda isn’t targeting the likes of Hyundai’s Kona Electric with the MX-30, rather the Mini Electric and Honda e; stylish compact EVs with a range that comfortably exceeds most people’s daily driving needs. It also keeps weight down, so should continue Mazda’s focus on good driving dynamics for its models. The interior is made from some interesting materials, including cork in the console tray and recycled plastic bottles are used in the door trim. The entire cabin is made of environmentally friendly materials. Access is via a set of centre-opening doors, with conventional front doors complemented by a pair of shorter rear-hinged ones for access to the back.

Hardcore Alpine A110S makes public debut at Tokyo

The Alpine A110S has made its public debut at Tokyo motor show, having first been revealed in August. The flagship model, which went on sale in September, is priced from £57,590 in the UK, including the cheapest paint option.  The S commands a £6780 premium over the mid-range Légende variant, and can be specced in a range of five colours, the most expensive of which, matt grey, costs £4440. A new set of 18in black alloy wheels is exclusive to S trim, and a contrasting carbon roof can be equipped for £2208.  Inside, the standard leather-Alcantara sports seats can be replaced with a pair of carbon-backed buckets for £1656, while bespoke floormats with blue stitching can be added for £110. Driving aids such as hill start assist, cruise control and tyre pressure monitoring are equipped as standard, but a rear parking camera is optional at £480.  The new A110 S is, according to the company, a true “focused sports car” with a “very different character” from existing versions of the two-seater. The new range-topping variant of the mid-engined Alpine is built around a reworked version of the 1.8-litre four-cylinder turbocharged engine, with the turbo boost pressure increased by 0.4 bar. That means the unit’s peak power output has risen by 49bhp to 288bhp, which arrives at 6400rpm, 400rpm higher than previously. Torque remains at 236lb ft but is available from 2000rpm to 6400rpm, 1400rpm higher than in a standard A110. Retaining the seven-speed automatic gearbox from the standard Alpine, the A110 S can cover 0-62mph in 4.4sec – a 0.1sec improvement – and its top speed is 162mph. The A110 S retains the same aluminium body but has a different chassis configuration, with new stiffer coil suspension springs, retuned dampers and firmer anti-roll bars.  The ride height has been lowered by 4mm to increase stability. There are new wheels and new bespoke Michelin Pilot Sport 4 tyres (215mm at the front, 245mm at the rear) for increased mechanical grip. Brembo brake calipers with 320mm bi-material discs – available as an option on other A110 variants – are standard and the firm has reworked the electronic stability control. Overall, the changes have increased the car’s weight slightly, from 1103kg to 1114kg. Jean-Pascal Dauce, Alpine’s engineering boss, said the changes were all designed with a focus on “high-speed stability and handling precision”. But he added that it would remain a “usable everyday car. The A110 S wouldn’t be a true Alpine if it was too firm or too hard riding to be driven day to day.” As well as the mechanical changes, the A110 S features a number of bespoke styling elements, including carbonfibre and orange flag details on the rear pillars, orange brake calipers and a new wheel design. Inside, the A110 rangetopper comes with new upholstery and stitching, a leather steering wheel and aluminium pedals.  Buyers can also opt for a carbonfibre roof, which reduces the car’s weight by
