The Halifax Regional Police will take delivery of a new armored vehicle come spring of 2020, a decision thats stirred up some controversy, Global News reports.The Terradyne Gurkha MPV will cost the municipality $368,000; that sounds like a lot of money, but its a lot less than the $500,000 the city had budgeted for.The contract was awarded to southern-Ontario-based Terradyne Armored Vehicles Inc. on September 23, according to Brendan Elliott, a spokesperson for the municipality. According to HRP, the vehicle will provide a level of safety for the officers and the public, while helping them address the climbing number of issues they encounter. It has also stated the vehicle would not be equipped with weaponry or aggressive equipment.Critics of the vehicle say it makes local law enforcement too militaristic, particularly in the context of being used to police marginalized and minority groups around the city.This isnt the first time armored vehicles have been used by smaller police departments, and the results have been mixed.Fredericton Police Force unveil their armored vehicle in April 2018, and Frederictons Emergency Response Team have used it a few times. Rivian gets order from Amazon for 100,000 electric delivery vans
Electric vehicle startup Rivian has just taken an order from e-commerce retailer Amazon for 100,000 battery-powered delivery vans, with delivery of the first such vehicles to start 2021, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos said September 19.By 2022, Rivian hopes to have shipped the first 10,000 of the vans to Amazon, a spokesperson told The Drive, will the full fleet of 100,000 operational by 2024.While the vehicles will be based on the Michigan-based automakers R1 platform and employ the same powertrain and battery, the suspension, application software and interior and exterior, all designed to Amazons specs, will be unique to that companys fleet. Bright and cheesy! International pizza chain Domino’s and California-based robotics company Nuro have announced a partnership that will see autonomous vehicles deliver pizza to customers in Houston, Texas this year. We are always looking for new ways to innovate and evolve the delivery experience for our customers, said Kevin Vasconi, Domino’s executive vice-president and chief information officer in a press release announcing the partnership. Nuro’s vehicles are specially designed to optimize the food delivery experience, which makes them a valuable partner in our autonomous vehicle journey. The opportunity to bring our customers the choice of an unmanned delivery experience, and our operators an additional delivery solution during a busy store rush, is an important part of our autonomous vehicle testing. Toyota and Pizza Hut collaborated on a similar project last year, but their pizza-cooking-and-delivering Tundra PIE Pro pickup was just a concept, which will probably never actually deliver cheesy satisfaction. This unmanned rolling kitchen called the R2, however, is actually going to be cruising around the roads of Houston dropping off hot pies. Seems futuristic, but Nuro’s autonomous vehicles have already been delivering other items in the Houston metro area since March, 2019, and in Scottsdale, Arizona, before that. But what about the rest of us who want to stuff slices of pepperoni ‘za into our pie holes without having to make eye contact with a delivery person? Eating in your car isn’t a new concept. We’ve been dropping French fries down the sides of our seats for generations now. And neither is food delivery a novel concept. Yet somehow it’s taken this long to bring the two together in the way that Burger King has with its “Traffic Jam Whopper,” a new product system that delivers Burger King menu items directly to your car window while you’re stuck on a highway moving at 2 km/h. What you’re about to witness is evolution, folks: The program was introduced in Mexico City where gridlock traffic is a part of daily life for many, AdAge reports. Basically, digital billboards use real-time data to let drivers know how long they’ll be stuck in traffic and tempt them into an in-vehicle meal. “You’ll be stuck for 59 minutes. Order to your car now,” one of the digital billboards in Mexico City read. To discourage hungry drivers from texting while behind the wheel, the BK app apparently also functions with voice commands. Once the order is made, a motorcycle courier tracks the customer down with Google Maps tech and, by traffic filtering, or lane-splitting, delivers the meal. The program has proved so successful, with Burger King’s daily delivery order seeing a 63-per-cent increase and the BK app a 44-per-cent boost to its download rate, according to a campaign case study, that the fast food brand has decided to expand to the congested streets of Los Angeles, Shanghai and Sao Paulo. With numbers like that, it won’t come as a shock if other players start to enter the traffic-food-delivery game, too. Imagine getting a hot coffee delivered to your window while you wait out the morning traffic. A service like this wouldn’t be of much use to drivers in Canada, though, where lane-splitting on motorcycles or mopeds is illegal. Which is ironic, as the traffic jam is usually caused by the lineup to the Tim Hortons drive-through.

Audi’s new ‘hot’ hatch Audi reckons shared autonomous cars could revolutionise takeaways – by arriving with your food already on board. The firm’s AI:ME urban concept car features a food storage unit and subscribers can request a car and food using an app. The autonomous car stops at the restaurant and is loaded up with the food en route to arriving for use. Infiniti looks eastwards After announcing it will pull the plug on Europe later this year, Infiniti is betting the farm on China. At the Shanghai motor show, the brand said it will build its first electrified model in China, for China. Its target is to triple sales in China in the next five years with a number of locally made cars.
