BMWs late June showed off its latest EV test mule, Lucy, a battery-driven prototype built out of a standard 5 Series and offering more horsepower and torque than anything the German automakers ever built before.While the exterior looks like a standard 5 Series, somehow BMW managed to tuck a few electric motors and all the supplementary batteries and wires under the body, a seriously impressive feat.Three motors power the vehicle, like in a Tesla Model S, with two for the rear wheels; and one in the front to provide all-wheel-drive. The two motors in the rear allow for active torque-vectoring, improving cornering ability.Together Lucys motors make a ridiculous 711 horsepower, which is 111 more than the current BMW M5 and its twin-turbo V8. Project BEV also trumps it on torque, with some 848 lb.-ft. on tap. All that stomp helps the sedan rocket to 100 km/h in just 3.0 seconds, and in total silence.Project BEV also uses no rare earth metals in its motors, and BMW says the upcoming iX3 will similarly keep the rare metals in the earth.While Lucy is a testbed and not a production vehicle, we cant see BMW going through all this work just to build a toy. Theyll be able to accelerate away from Mr. Bond pretty quickly.The luxury EV race is heating up faster than a bank of un-cooled batteries. Companies like Audi, Mercedes, and, of course, Tesla, are hard at work either designing or churning out fast and sumptuous examples of electric vehicles.The latest to jump into the game? JLR, announcing a new XJ sedan and Range Rover SUV that will be powered by electrons.In fact, the next big sedan from Jaaag will launch solely as an electric car, taking aim at the Tesla Model S and upcoming Porsche Taycan. At a global investor meeting earlier in June, promises were made the companys new modular platform, one which is electric-capable, will first spawn a big SUV and premium sedan. Even without further specifics, it doesnt take a rocket scientist to figure out what models they will be.This new platform will be adaptable to plug-in and mild-hybrid powertrains, so dont expect the new XJ and electric Rangey to be offered purely in EV form. Citing unnamed sources, Automotive News Europe says the XJ will be endowed with six-pot gasoline engines later in its development cycle. All-electrics on this new platform are said to pack a 90-kWh battery good for nearly 500 km of range. Plug-in hybrids using this architecture, meanwhile, will have a 13-kWh battery and be able to power themselves sans gasoline for about 50 km.Platform-sharing has become a key manner in which car companies can save a few dollars in the face of rising costs and competition. The Drako GTE electric supercar allegedly boasts 6,491 lb.-ft. of torque

The electric car market is far from crowded, but the frequency of new arrivals is definitely increasing.Drako Motors is the most recent EV-maker to enter the scene, and while the Silicon Valley-based brand hasn’t put out a production car yet, it has plans to hit the ground running with this four-passenger luxury car.  Luckily, that car will allegedly have a helluva stride. Drako says its GTE will use four electric motors to make a combined 1,200 horsepower and 6,491 lb.-ft. of torque, and employ that twist to get it up to a top speed of 216 mph (332 km/h).The EV newcomers teased the car with a photo and a 10-second clip showing the same image and a date: 08.16.19.There isn’t much more known about the Drako GTE yet, other than the very-hard-to-believe ludicrous numbers and the fact that it set a lap record for electric vehicles at the Nürburgring in 2015 with a time of 7 minutes 49.04 seconds. As for its styling, Drako promises the car will offer luxurious “iconic Italian design” and enough room for four passengers and their luggage. How Volkswagen’s electric record-breaker conquered the Nurburgring

After setting a new outright record on the 12.42-mile Pikes Peak hillclimb last year, the electric Volkswagen ID R already sat atop one very big mountain. Which left the question: what next?  For VW, the answer was simple: showcase the electric car’s potential on the proving ground of choice for all car firms, the 12.90-mile snaking ribbon of bumpy, undulating Tarmac that is the Nürburgring Nordschleife. Officially, the goal was to break the 6min 45.90sec electric car lap record. In truth, that was never really in doubt. This was about pushing that electric record as far as it would go.  The previous mark was set by the Nio EP9 which, while producing 1341bhp from four electric motors, was still a production-based car that could be made road legal. The ID R is a pure-bred competition car, developed by one of the world’s largest manufacturers. On its first run – a practice lap – it smashed the Nio’s record. By 20 seconds.  With a ‘mere’ 671bhp from two electric motors, one on each axle providing four-wheel drive, the ID R isn’t the most powerful EV developed – but VW’s philosophy isn’t on outright power, rather ensuring it has full power throughout a run.  Fortuitously, at 12.42 and 12.90 miles respectively, Pikes Peak and the Nürburgring are a similar length, so VW retained the same lithium ion battery design, featuring eight 56-cell modules, split into two blocks (VW remains coy on the energy capacity of the batteries).  But length is the only thing the two courses have in common, and the ID R was extensively reworked for the Nürburgring. The mammoth Pikes Peak-spec rear wing was switched for a smaller one, featuring a Drag Reduction System that, with a new floor and front spoiler, cuts drag by up to 20%. Minimising drag is vital on such a circuit, particularly on the 1.3-mile Döttinger Höhe straight which, inconveniently for an electric car, comes near the end of the lap.  With fewer slow corners offering fewer chances to regain energy under braking, the energy management system was reworked. There were also new Bridgestone tyres and lightweight carbonfibre brake discs.  One thing VW didn’t change was the driver: Romain Dumas. Chosen for Pikes Peak as a former winner of the famous hillclimb, Dumas is also a multiple Nürburgring 24 Hours victor. That said, until Monday 3 June, he’d never been round the track at anything close to the speeds he managed in the ID R.  “Compared to a GT car, the cornering speeds and g-forces are far higher,” he says. “The limiting factor becomes your body and your mind.”  On Pikes Peak, Dumas had a single timed run. But given a full day at the Nordschleife, he made five runs using two ID R chassis (a primary car and a second used for evaluation and test runs). His first lap was 6min 25sec, but he wasn’t entirely happy with the set-up of the car. With settings tweaked, Dumas duly clocked a 6min 12sec lap despite running low on power as he crossed the line.  “I was honing the driving style, particularly in the fast bits,” said Dumas after that run. “At Flugplatz, I was lifting a bit: I arrived at 255km/h (158mph) and lifted to 250. On the first run I was at 245, so I gained 5km/h – but now I need to not lift, and find 5km/h more.”  After lunch, VW settled on two more runs: another test lap, before one final push. Dumas’ ‘practice’ lap was 6min 09sec, enough to make the ID R the second-fastest car to ever lap the Nordschleife. His final effort was quicker still: 6min 05.336sec. Incredible for an electric car. Incredible for any car.  “On the final lap I attacked the kerbs and took the inside line at the Karousel, which I hadn’t done before,” says Dumas. “I thought if we damaged the car’s floor a little bit, it wouldn’t matter. We were really beginning to push the limit. It was starting to get interesting.”  Could the ID R have gone quicker? Undoubtedly: the team hinted its simulated fastest lap was slightly faster still, motorsport boss Sven Smeets noting the unusually hot June weather made managing the battery temperature and power tough. Still, the time was impressive enough.  But we’re talking relatively marginal gains: it was never going to trouble the outright lap record, the still-hard-to-fathom 5min 19.45sec set by Timo Bernhard last year in the Porsche 919 Evo. That machine was a heavily modified Le Mans winner re-imagined without limit, featuring a hybrid powertrain pairing a 710bhp 2.0-litre V4 engine with a 433bhp electric motor.  There’s no disgrace in not coming close to matching that. Instead, consider that the ID R was quicker than every other car that has ever lapped the track, going faster than the record time that stood for 35 years before Bernhard’s run – Stefan Bellof’s 6min 11.13sec effort in a Porsche 956 in 1983. GM is thinking about building an electric Hummer

2006 HUMMER H3General Motors A zero-emission Hummer sounds as paradoxical as non-alcoholic whiskey, but General Motors is mulling over the idea of building an electric vehicle that would bring the defunct gas-guzzling brand back to life. For now, it’s just an idea GM is considering as it plans which vehicles will be included in a fleet of electrified SUVs and trucks, say people familiar with the matter. The Hummer name has surfaced as way to tap growing demand for rugged SUVs with off-road capabilities, while avoiding the gasoline-burning image that made the brand something of a pariah a decade ago, said the people, who asked not to be named because the conversations are private. Electric Hummer chatter comes as GM is looking to transform itself from a conventional, gas-powered-vehicle maker into what Chief Executive Officer Mary Barra calls an “all-electric future.” Hummer is one of many options GM is exploring as it races to develop the next generation of battery-powered vehicles. Several other car companies also are rushing to produce commercially viable electric-powered models. When asked about it, GM President Mark Reuss was unconvinced. “I love Hummer,” Reuss said on the sidelines of a press conference on June 12. “I’m not sure. We’re looking at everything.” GM is currently working on two major battery-electric vehicle programs. The first is its BEV3 project, which will develop passenger cars, crossover SUVs and a variety of other small and mid-sized models. That’s part of the automaker’s pledge to put 20 EVs on the road globally by 2023. The second program would make electric pickups and other full-size vehicles, some of which can go off-road. In its family of brands, GM has large SUVs – such as the Chevrolet Suburban and Cadillac Escalade – as well as hulking GMC vehicles including the Sierra truck and Yukon SUV. GMC also has Denali-labeled models that denote luxury and an AT4 brand for off-road capable trucks. Any of those potentially could be offered with electric powertrains, Reuss said. “It’s massive. There might be places where we go first that are not just heavy-duty work trucks but more style and capability for off-road,” he said. “There are lots of things that are very attractive.” GM kept Hummer after its 2009 bankruptcy but halted sales in 2010. Back then, the 10-miles-per-gallon Hummer H2 made the brand a symbol of automaker indifference to global warming. The vehicle was so heavy its weight placed it beyond the reach of federal government rules for fuel-economy tests, further enraging environmentalists. Even if GM goes through with a plan to make an electric Hummer, it would be years away. GM’s planned electric-truck project is well underway, but those models aren’t expected to launch until after the debut of the BEV3 architecture for smaller vehicles. Cadillac or one of the higher-volume brands would probably get some of the first models on the larger electric-truck-based platform. Tesla Semi: electric lorry launch pushed back to 2020

Tesla boss Elon Musk has announced that the launch of the brand’s Semi electric lorry will be delayed until 2020, citing an already strained battery supply for production of its range of EVs.  Speaking at the firm’s annual shareholders meeting, Musk said his company would strive to ramp up battery production as quickly as possible, going so far as to suggest a venture into mining could be a possibility.  Despite the delay, customers are still able to reserve Semi models. Existing customers include large companies such as Walmart, UPS and FedEx, but it is remains to be seen whether the delayed release will discourage further investment in the zero-emissions truck.   Such bottlenecks are no new phenomenon for Tesla, with Model 3 production brought to a halt in early 2018 by worker shortages and software issues. The brand’s fourth model, the Jaguar I-Pace rivalling Model Y, is due on the US market next year, with Musk aiming for an annual output of 2000 per week by September 2020.  The Semi electric lorry will be capable of travelling up to 600 miles on a single charge, even when fully loaded, company CEO Elon Musk has claimed. According to Electrek, Musk said during a conference call last year that he was “optimistic” the Semi would beat the 500-mile range announced at its reveal in 2017. His claim followed Daimler lorry division boss Martin Daum’s suggestion that the Semi’s statistics “defied the laws of physics”. The Semi with the 600-mile claimed range costs $180,000 (£132,720 at today’s rate) in the US. A lower-spec variant with a 300-mile range will be priced from $150,000 (£110,565). Prices for diesel lorries in Britain start at about £85,000 by comparison. During its November 2017 reveal in Hawthorne, California, where Tesla also showed a new Roadster sports car, Musk said the Semi, which was previously referred to as the Tesla Truck, was capable of accelerating from 0-60mph in 5.0sec. He also said it was able to hit 60mph in 20.0sec when the trailer is fully loaded with 80,000lb (almost 36 tonnes) of cargo. This beats the average sprint time for regular diesel-powered rivals by around 40 seconds. The Semi’s energy recovery systems are claimed to be capable of recovering 98% of kinetic energy to the battery. For regular charging, the lorry can be connected to Megachargers – a new high-speed DC charging solution – that are said to add about 400 miles in 30 minutes and can be installed at origin or destination points, much like the existing Superchargers. Efficiency is boosted by a low wind resistance, with Tesla claiming the Semi has a drag coefficient of 0.36Cd. It states that most of its competitors are closer to 0.65Cd. Tesla has refrained from going into further detail about the lorry’s drivetrain and battery but has revealed that the vehicle features advanced autonomous technology to prevent jackknifing of the trailer. Onboard sensors are installed to detect instability and can adjust torque sent to each wheel and independently actuate all brakes to avoid jackknifing. Additionally, surround cameras provide autonomous object detection and reduce blindspots, alerting the driver to safety hazards and obstacles. The lorry also introduces a new Enhanced Autopilot system, with automatic emergency braking, automatic lane keeping, lane departure warning and even event recording. The Semi can travel in a convoy, allowing one or several Semis to autonomously follow a leader. Alongside the claims for performance and safety, Musk said the Semi would provide users with massive savings. Figures produced by the company state that owners “can expect to save $200,000 or more over a million miles based on fuel costs alone”. First there was the announcement the all-electric R1T pickup and R1S SUV will do more than 640 km on a charge and cost just $70,000. Then there was the Camping Special trim teaser that showcased some of the accessories that will come along with the outdoor-focused vehicles. And now, thanks to some candid comments from the usually rather reserved CEO, RJ Scaringe, in conversation with The Drive, there’s the news that Rivian’s first fleet will also offer vehicle-to-vehicle charging. We’d say that’s freakin’ cool! but at this point we’re almost scared to hype Rivian any further for fear of jinxing it. Though, the company may be beyond the powers of the jinx—Rivian recently received a US$500-million investment from Ford and similar contributions from Amazon. Scaringe also announced that auxiliary battery packs will also be made available, allowing off-road enthusiasts even greater range. You’re starting to get into the long tail of use cases, but even there we’ve designed the vehicle so you can have auxiliary battery packs,” Scaringe told The Drive. “You can also charge Rivian-to-Rivian, which is a neat thing. You connect the two vehicles and then I could hand you some electrons. That takes us to the limit, and of course you can always find a corner of the world where it won’t work, just like you can’t find a gas station in Antarctica. You won’t be able to find a plug in Antarctica, so there are natural limitations. Audi recalls first electric vehicle in U.S. on battery fire risk

The 2019 Audi e-Tron, the luxury automakers first fully electric series-production model, will be in Canadian showrooms in the spring and pricing starts in the $90,000 neighbourhood.Audi Canada Volkswagens luxury brand Audi is recalling its first all-electric vehicle due to the risk of a battery fire. The company issued a voluntary recall of approximately 540 E-Tron SUV models sold in the U.S. because of a risk that moisture can seep into the battery cell through a wiring harness glitch, spokesman Mark Dahncke said. The company isn’t aware of any fires or injuries because of the flaw, which affects a total of 1,644 models, he said. The E-Tron, which went on sale in the U.S. in April, is Audi’s first fully-electric car and one in a wave of contenders from traditional automakers looking to challenge Tesla’s dominance of the segment. While electric vehicles are no more prone to accidents or fires than gasoline-powered cars – and might be less so, according the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration – the lithium-ion battery technology that powers them is still evolving, and there is no consensus on safe system design. Audi said there have been five instances globally where a battery fault light turned on because of the moisture issue. It began contacting E-Tron owners in the U.S. last week, prior to a warning from federal safety regulators, and should have a repair available by August. “We are applying an abundance of caution as no such incidents have been reported globally,” the company said in a statement. Audi said it’s offering E-Tron owners loaner vehicles and an $800 cash card to cover gas or incidentals during the recall period, as well as free roadside assistance. Billionaires — they’re just like us! At least, that’s the impression two of the world’s biggest might’ve given off in a recent video with a sweet Canadian classic car cameo. Bill Gates recently released a video himself of him and his buddy, Warren Buffett, pulling a shift at Dairy Queen — which Buffett owns, who knew!? — where they delighted customers by offering soft-serve cones that looked like they’d been drawn by Salvador Dali, learned the art of the upside-down Blizzard, and chatted about investing. But what piqued our interest in this three-minute spot wasn’t the investment advice or comic value of two billionaires serving fast food to the public, but the red Porsche 356 convertible with British Columbia plates and the words Electra Meccanica across the side. It’s a car we recognize, having gotten behind the wheel of a similar model in blue last year, the sole one in existence at the time. The 356 eRoadster is an open-top Porsche 356 replica that has been converted to electric power by Vancouver-based EV startup Electra Meccanica. Parent company Intermeccanica has been building 356 replicas in Vancouver since the late 1970s and only launched its electric-vehicle division, Electra Meccanica, which removes the fuel-powered engine and swaps in electric powertrains, a few years ago. But the eRoadster is already a modern West Coast classic, offering drop-top driving in a classic Porsche body with cutting-edge, environmentally friendly tech. It’s unclear if Gates owns this red one or was just borrowing it, but we do know the man is a Porschephile, having famously pushed into U.S. legislation the show and display laws, just so he could drive his Porsche 959 stateside.
