Best lease deals of the week: Budget family SUVs

Leasing can be an affordable, practical route into having your own private car, but it’s not always easy to tell the good deals from the duds.  The experts at our sister magazine What Car? work hard to find you the best pay-monthly schemes, taking into account mileage allowance, montly outlay, contract length and initial deposit. We’ll be bringing you the best deals they find from a different segment each week. This week, it’s budget family SUVs:  1. Dacia Duster 1.6 SCE Access  £886 deposit, £148 per month, 48 months, 8000 miles per year The cheapest SUV here is much more comfortable, refined and practical than its predecessor. Don’t expect engaging handling or scintillating pace but do expect to feel ever so slightly smug. 2. Ford Kuga 1.5 Ecoboost 120 Zetec £1140 deposit, £190 per month, 48 months, 8000 miles per year The most expensive car in this selection is also the best to drive. The Kuga offers a blend of agility and body control that is, frankly, second to none. It’s a rare treat in a class that’s often lacking in both. 3. Hyundai Tucson 1.6 GDI SE Nav £1102 deposit, £184 per month, 36 months, 8000 miles per year  The Tucson may not shine brightly in any particular area but is nevertheless a smart, capable and practical family SUV that’s also reliable and pretty likeable. SE Nav trim isn’t the cheapest but it’s our favourite. 4. Nissan Qashqai 1.3 DIG-T Visia  £1098 deposit, £183 per month, 48 months, 8000 miles per year The car that kick-started the current SUV craze continues to lead by covering more bases than most of the opposition. Some newer rivals may better it for driving pleasure but few are as well rounded. 5. Skoda Karoq 1.0 TSI SE Technology £981 deposit, £164 per month, 24 months, 8000 miles per year  Few will argue with the Karoq’s price but there’s more to this Skoda than the sound of pennies saved. In fact, it’s a great all-rounder with a composed ride, a good choice of engines and a spacious and versatile cabin. For more great personal business lease deals visit What Car?

Tesla sued by family of Florida man killed in Autopilot crash

Tesla was sued for the second time in three months by the family of a car owner who was killed in a crash while using the driver-assistance system Autopilot.Jeremy Banner, 50, died when the Model 3 sedan he was driving failed to brake or steer to avoid a semi trailer that ran a stop sign on a Florida highway in March, according to the lawsuit, which also names the driver of the semi as a defendant.Banner had engaged the Autopilot system about 10 seconds before the collision.Representatives for Tesla didnt immediately respond to a request for comment on the suit, which was filed Thursday. The National Transportation Safety Board issued a preliminary report on the crash in May and said data from the vehicle showed Autopilot was active at the time of the incident. The preliminary data indicated that neither the driver nor the Autopilot system executed evasive maneuvers.Banner is survived by his wife and three children. Were not just talking about the consequences of this defect to the Banner family, which is horrific, Trey Lytal, a lawyer for the family, said during a press conference. These products are defective.Lytal compared Banners accident to that of Joshua Brown, a Tesla Model S owner who died in a similar crash involving a tractor trailer in 2016. The family of Walter Huang, an Apple Inc. engineer who died in a Model X last year in Mountain View, California, sued the company in

Land Rover Defender: details of new Defender family leaked

Vital statistics of Jaguar Land Rover’s all-new Defender family have been leaked online. The big news is that there will be three versions of the new Defender. The first two versions  – the 90 and 110 – will be launched for the 2020 model year. What appears to be a series of screen slides, detailing the three-model Slovakian-built Defender family, the engine line-up as well as the trim and options have been covertly photographed and uploaded to Land Rover enthusiast forum Disco4.com. It’s not known where the leak took place, but it appears to be an internal JLR briefing. Like all future JLR models, the Defender family is based on the new aluminium MLB platform, which can be engineered as a conventional mild hybrid, a plug-in hybrid and a pure EV version.  There’s no detail as to whether all Defenders will be mild-hybrids as standard and just one plug-in hybrid will be offered in 2020 and 2021. The Defender 90 is described in the slides as the ‘halo image icon’ of the Defender family and is aimed at ‘the young, affluent fun seekers’. The shortest Defender will be available in 5 and 6 seat options, which suggests that a three-abreast front seat is possible. The 90 is also a surprisingly compact machine, measuring just 4.323m long. It is marginally the tallest of the three versions, at 1.927m. The wheelbase measures a just 2.587m. All three Defenders are the same width at 1.999m, though there’s no detail on whether this is measured across the mirrors. Also on sale in 2020 will be the new Defender 110. Land Rover describes this as the ‘definitive’ model in the family. It will be available in 5, 6 and 7 seat forms. It’s aimed at ‘couples, the self-employed and adventurers’. The 110 is 4.758m long and has a rather longer 3.022m wheelbase and is a tad lower at 1.916m. Perhaps the biggest surprise is the Defender 130, which is destined for launch in 2022 and so unlikely to be seen testing until the very end of 2019.  This is designated by JLR as a ‘Premium Explorer’ for ‘families and active lifestyle and travel’ and will come with eight seats. The 130 is a significant 5.1m long, although it has the same 3.022m wheelbase as the 110, suggesting a long rear overhang and substantial boot space. Under the bonnet of the 90 and 110 models, there will be a choice of three petrol and three diesel engines in 2020 and 2021 and all Defenders will come as standard with an autobox and all-wheel drive.  The diesel units will be offered in D200, D240 (four cylinder) and D300 300bhp (straight-six) forms, with 0-62mph times of around 10.0secs, 8.3secs and 7.4secs respectively. It’s understood the D300 will be the only diesel engine offered in North American markets and arrives for the 2021 model year. Three petrol Defender engines – the P300, P400 and the P400e Plug-in Hybrid – will be on sale immediately. These are thought to all be straight-six units, and will be sold in the US, where many States use the same onerous ‘SULEV’ pollution regime as California. According to the leak, the plug-in P400 offers a torque boost from 400Nm to 645Nm and a 5.9sec 0-62mph time, Autocar understands. There will be three base models in the Defender line-up, the first-year production X, Standard and, for 2021, the X-Dynamic. The high-end X will offer a fixed spec and ‘limited options’ for 2021, before being offered with a wider spec for the 2021 model year. The Defender X will be sold in powerful P300 and P400e petrol forms in 2020, with the D300 diesel being added to a lengthened options list in 2021. The Defender ‘Standard’ will be available with the full range of engine options from launch, aside from the D300 which arrives in 2021.  Customers will be able to select a further three specification levels: S, SE and HSE.  According to the leaked presentation slides, the ‘Standard’ specification Defenders will get 18in wheels, LED headlamps, 8-way adjustable fabric front seats, a 140W audio system with six speakers, a 7in instrument cluster and a 10in touchscreen. ’S’ specification Defenders add front fog lamps, 12-way adjustable ‘semi-powered’ seats in ‘Performance’ fabric and a 12in digital instrument cluster. The SE gets 20in ‘Apollo’ wheels, Premium LED headlights with high beam assist, powered rear-view mirrors and a passive entry system, 14-way adjustable electric front seats, a 370W Meridian audio system with 10 speakers and automatic parking. Defender HSE models gets Matrix LED headlamps, 18-way adjustable Windsor leather electric memory seats with climate control and what JLR calls a ‘Drive Pack and Park Pack’. The launch ‘X’ model gets darkened 20in wheels and taillights, more highly-specced front seats and a ‘Co-Pilot’ pack.  On top of this, JLR will offer four option packs (Capability, Interior Upgrade, Exterior and Convenience) as well as stand-alone options. Accessories – badged as Explorer, Adventure, Urban and Country – will also be offered by dealers. Clearly, JLR is looking to take advantage of the

RM Sotheby’s will auction off this family of pristine, rare Ferraris

Ontario-based classic car auction company RM Sotheby’s is famed for attracting rare and expensive vehicles to its events. But this recent addition to the docket for the firm’s upcoming event in Monterey, California is incredible even by its standards. The Ming Collection is a group of seven rare and immaculately kept Ferraris, any one of which would be worthy of a headline in and of itself. Especially the Collection’s crown jewel, a 2006 Ferrari FXX, one that’s so low-mile it’s “essentially still ‘in the wrapper’.” The track-only 800-horsepower prototype FXX Enzo finished in Rosso Scuderia with white stripes, for example, was only ever driven once when it was delivered to its first and only owner, and still comes with the original factory support equipment and an unused race suit and helmet. The price of the FXX alone is an estimated US$2,850,000 to US$3,250,000. The collection also includes a 1991 Ferrari F40, a 1984 Ferrari 512 BBi, a 1985 Ferrari 308 GTSi, a custom-ordered 2007 Ferrari F430 Spider F1, a 2013 Ferrari 458 Spider and a 1997 Ferrari 355 Spider. None has travelled more than 2,500 miles (4,023 km).  The quality and originality of the Ming Collection is absolutely incredible, Gord Duff, Global Head of Auctions at RM Sothebys, said in a press release. Every single car in the group is nearly better than new and the meticulous level of care that has gone into maintaining these cars is outstanding.Ferrari FXX models rarely come up for auction, and it is an especially rare opportunity to find one that has never been raced yet has been so well cared for. Add the lineup of additional low-mileage supercars finished in gorgeous, rarely-seen colors and our Monterey sale is like a toy store for enthusiasts of modern performance. The team of Prancing Horses will be auctioned off at the RM Sothebys event in California, taking place from August 15 through 17 at the Monterey Conference

Best lease deals of the week: Family SUVs

Leasing can be an affordable, practical route into having your own private car, but it’s not always easy to tell the good deals from the duds.  The experts at our sister magazine What Car? work hard to find you the best pay-monthly schemes, taking into account mileage allowance, montly outlay, contract length and initial deposit. We’ll be bringing you the best deals they find from a different segment each week. This week, it’s family SUVs:  1. Audi Q3 35 TFSI Sport £1860 deposit, £310 per month, 48 months, 8000 miles per year With sliding rear seats and a multi-level boot floor, the Q3 is spacious and practical, and there’s an off-road mode for the adventurous. The only question is what do Audi’s new engine numbers mean? 2. BMW X1 sDrive 2.0i M Sport Auto £1777 deposit, £296 per month, 36 months, 8000 miles per year Fun to drive and with a practical, high-quality interior, the X1 impresses on first acquaintance. Refinement could be better and performance trails the class best but it handles well, even if the steering lacks feel. 3. Mercedes-Benz GLA 180 Urban Edition £1612 deposit, £269 per month, 48 months, 10,000 miles per year The GLA is due to be replaced but this current one still looks good. Diesel-engined versions are strong and cheap to run, the dashboard looks great and there’s plenty of kit but rivals are cheaper and more spacious. 4. Range Rover Evoque 2.0 D150 2WD  £1907 deposit, £318 per month, 48 months, 8000 miles per year The Evoque’s sensational looks have evolved from the original model and continue inside with a genuinely classy interior that is roomier than before, especially in the rear. The driving position is spot on, too. 5. Volvo XC40 1.5 T3 Momentum £1607 deposit, £268 per month, 36 months, 8000 miles per year Volvo’s compact SUV not only looks great but is good to drive, safe and practical. It’s a little noisy on the motorway and the rear seats aren’t as comfortable as some, but it’s a strong contender in a tough class. 6. Jaguar E-Pace 2.0D R-Dynamic £1768 deposit, £295 per month, 48 months, 8000 miles per year Great looks, a comfortable ride, good economy and that Jaguar badge will be enough to convince most buyers, but the E-Pace doesn’t handle quite as sharply as we’d like and some engines lack sparkle. Best lease deals of the week: Large family cars

This week, it’s large family cars:  1. Ford Mondeo 1.5 Ecoboost Zetec Edition £1486 deposit, £248 per month, 48 months, 8000 miles per year  Comfortable (at least on the optional Comfort Dynamic suspension), classy, very well built and, despite having just two doors, reasonably practical. Could do with being a little more exciting to drive. 2. Mazda 6 2.0 SE-L Nav+ £1354 deposit, £226 per month, 48 months, 8000 miles per year The 6 is often overlooked by buyers, which is a shame because it’s terrific value for money and very well equipped, a particular highlight being its infotainment system. As a driver’s car, it’s pretty polished, too. 3. Peugeot 508 Fastback 1.6 Puretech GT Line  £1355 deposit, £226 per month, 24 months, 8000 miles per year  Incredibly stylish and excellent value. It lacks the interior space of some rivals and rear visibility is a bit restricted but you’ll quickly forgive it for those looks. 4. Skoda Superb 1.5 TSI SE   £1373 deposit, £229 per month, 48 months, 8000 miles per year The Superb is a huge and hugely practical family car. And that’s just this saloon. The estate is even roomier. Skoda may be the VW Group’s budget brand but there is nothing budget about the Superb’s fit and finish. 5. Vauxhall Insignia Grand Sport 1.5T Design £1882 deposit, £314 per month, 48 months, 8000 miles per year The Grand Sport casts the Insignia in a new light. It’s stylish and distinctive where its predecessor majored on conformity. It’s also spacious and decent to drive. 6. Volkswagen Passat 1.5 TSI Evo 150 SE Business  £1810 deposit, £302 per month, 48 months, 8000 miles per year The Passat bridges the gap between mainstream family cars and their premium alternatives such as the Audi A4. It’s classy, roomy and well resolved. For more great personal business lease deals visit What Car?
