2020 Fisker Ocean can gain 200 miles of range in 30 minutes

American start-up Fisker has announced a partnership with Electrify America that will give drivers of its 2020 Ocean SUV access to “the largest open fast charging network” in the US.  Fisker claims that Electrify America’s 350kW rapid chargers, which are compatible with all mainstream electric vehicles (EVs), are capable of delivering more than 200 miles of range in as little as 30 minutes. The network is currently under development, with plans to be operating in 45 of the 50 states by December 2021.  The announcement comes as the company gears up to unwrap the futuristic Tesla Model Y rival at the CES exhibition in Las Vegas on 4 January 2020.  The Ocean will be offered primarily to customers through a leasing programme, with prices starting from $379 (£295) per month, after a deposit of $2999 (£2335), for the cheapest of the five trim levels. Prospective customers can pay a fully refundable $250 (£194) deposit now via Fisker’s smartphone app to secure a reservation. Fisker says it will sell a “very limited” number of Oceans outright at the request of several global customers.  The California-based company claims its first series production car is “the world’s most sustainable vehicle”, with recycled, vegan and other natural products used throughout. A full-length solar roof is said to offer 1000 additional zero-emissions miles per year, while recycled fishing nets, t-shirts, bottles and tyres feature throughout the interior and exterior to lessen the model’s well-to-wheel carbon footprint. The Ocean is also claimed to offer “the highest five-star safety rating”, with Fisker drawing attention to the prominent side impact protection beams. It’s unclear, however, whether the SUV has yet been tested by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, which conducts crash tests in the US. The Ocean rides high and has modern, utilitarian styling. Flared wheel arches hint at its performance potential, while narrow headlights and chrome detailing are a nod to the 2018 Fisker Emotion concept. It features what the firm calls “captivating design touches that have been traditionally reserved for supercars in the past”. Prominent styling details include a front-mounted radar in place of a grille, a large front air intake, flared wheel arches and a futuristic headlight design. Fisker has also confirmed that the side indicators double as charging indicators, turning green when the battery is full.  Also featured is a targa-style removable roof section which Fisker says offers the open-air benefits of a convertible “without compromising the rugged and safe structural integrity of an SUV”. Fisker Ocean details revealed The new electric SUV will feature a solar roof Fisker has revealed details of its forthcoming production SUV, including the fact it will be called the Fisker Ocean. The Ocean will come with a range of between 250-300 miles on a charge, from a battery that will be around 80 kWh in capacity. It’s been designed to be one of the most sustainable vehicles on the road, with a number of efficiency and recycling systems built in. A solar roof will be included, good for around 1,000 free miles each year, and further updates to the car’s hardware is expected to see that figure increase further down the line. The carpets are made from recycled fishing nets, the interior will be vegan, and the cabin’s materials will be made from recycled polyester fibres from things such as t-shirts and plastic bottles. The Ocean will be available on a flexible leasing plan run through an app, with no long-term contracts. As well as the system becoming increasingly popular with customers, another reason behind the move is to help keep Fisker’s environmental responsibilities in-house. This way, the company is in greater control of recycling parts. Production is set to begin at the end of 2021, and a full launch will take place at the beginning of January next year. Reservations via the app will be available from 27th November 2019.

If you captain an electric car company, you get to announce stuff by social media. Those are the rules, apparently. The latest to exercise their right to bypass the PR department with a major announcement is Henrik Fisker, self-proclaimed “Husband, Father, Risk taking, innovation loving, protocol challenging designer entrepreneur who turns dreams into reality, never gives up” and the founder and CEO of the U.S. EV startup Fisker Automotive, who recently Tweeted out a photo of a mystery electric pickup truck. “ALL automotive segments have to be electrified! Elon has Tweet-confirmed the upcoming arrival of the Tesla pickup truck, Rivian is cooking up its own American-made challenger with the R1T, and now Ford has unveiled an electric F-150 capable of towing a 1-million-pound train. There are no further details about the Fisker pickup truck, but Henrik teasedthe ‘affordable’ US$40,000 electric SUV on his Facebook page with an image and a promise to unveil it fully in December. Perhaps alongside a pickup prototype? Better hurry. The competition is growing.

Fisker teases new photo of its ‘affordable’ all-electric SUV

Electric car company Fisker has teased a new photo of its upcoming battery-powered SUV, which it says will unveil this coming December, and which will cost US$40,000 when it goes on sale. Company founder and CEO Henrik Fisker didn’t go the traditional route of leaking the photo to the press; instead, he posted it on his Facebook page. The focus was on the D-pillar – where a recessed LED turn signal alongside the conventional rear-mounted signals “will provide extra safety when you change lanes,” he said – and on the wide, sculptured rear fender. The picture also shows a sunroof over the rear of the cabin, and pop-out door handles with LED strips in them. Two hours prior, Fisker posted that the company is “moving fast” on the electric SUV prototype, and that he’s in the final stages of selecting a plant to manufacture it. The Fisker SUV is targeting the upcoming Tesla Model Y, which is expected to go into production in late 2020. Tesla plans to sell the top-line versions first, advertising US$66,290 for a long-range model with rear-wheel drive. In all-wheel-drive trim, the long-range is $72,290, and the performance model is $84,290. A standard-range model, expected to cost around US$48,000, will go on sale in 2021. Fisker earlier said its electric sport-ute will have two electric motors, one for each axle, to provide all-wheel drive; and a range of 482 kilometres with an 80-kWh lithium-ion battery. It’s expected to go into production late in 2021. Fisker says it will be the first of three “affordable” electric vehicles the company is planning to produce.
