Mercedes-Benz has announced UK pricing and specifications for the second generation of its GLE Coupé, ahead of the model’s arrival in dealerships in spring 2020. Prices for the re-engineered BMW X6 rival start from £72,530 for the entry-level GLE 400 d 4Matic equipped with the AMG Line Premium Plus package, and rise to £80,615 for the AMG-tuned GLE 53 4Matic+ performance model. First customer deliveries are expected in summer 2020, with additional trim packages expected to be available nearer the time. The standard car is equipped with a 3.0-litre straight-six diesel motor producing 325bhp and 516lb ft, with the firm’s EQ Boost hybrid technology allowing for temporary boosts of 22bhp and 184lb ft. Fuel economy is quoted at up to 37.6mpg combined, with a certified emissions rating of 193g/km. The SUV can accelerate from 0-62mph in 5.7 seconds and on to a top speed of 149mph. As standard, AMG Line Premium Plus trim brings a pair of 12.3in digital infortainment displays, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a Burmester surround sound system, 22in alloy wheels, a panoramic sunroof and a range of advanced driver assistance programmes. An optional towing package – allowing for a towing capacity of 3500kg – is available for an additional £1150. The top-rung AMG model’s straight-six engine is petrol-powered, bumping power up to 429bhp for a 0-62mph time of 5.3 seconds and top speed of 155mph. Additional equipment over the standard car includes AMG’s active ride control technology, AMG steering wheel controls and a smartphone app which analyses journey and performance data. The newcomer raises the number of Mercedes SUV models to eight, indicating the significance to the brand of a sector that accounts for a third of its global sales. The GLE Coupé joins an ever-growing segment of style-focused variants of traditional high-riding models and can also count the Porsche Cayenne Coupé, Audi Q8 and Range Rover Velar as competitors. Despite sharing its underpinnings with the standard GLE, the GLE Coupé is 15mm longer and a substantial 63mm wider. Its wheelbase is 20mm longer than the previous version’s but is still 60mm shorter than the GLE’s. Mercedes claims this benefits handling and visual proportions. The roof height is 1722mm, 56mm lower than that of the standard model. Mercedes says aerodynamic efficiency has improved by 9% compared with its predecessor. From the bottom of the A-pillar forwards, the GLE Coupé looks nearly identical to the GLE, but from there back, it’s entirely different, with a steeper windscreen and rear window rake to account for that sloping roof, plus a bespoke rear-end shape. Wheels come in sizes from 19in to 22in, depending on the car’s spec. The interior of the GLE Coupé shares almost everything with its sibling, too, with the same dashboard layout dominated by two 12.3in screens and a raised centre console with integral grab handles. However, sports seats and a nappa leather sports steering wheel are standard fitments in the Coupé. Amazon Music streaming will also be available at launch. Mercedes claims the new car offers “tangibly more room” and a “significantly better sense of spaciousness” than its predecessor, thanks to the longer wheelbase and larger door openings. Storage capacity has increased, too. In seats-up form, the boot is only five litres larger than the old car’s, but with the 40/20/40 split folding rear bench down, that increase rises to 70 litres. The loading sill is lower than before, too, and the air suspension can drop the rear by a further 50mm at the press of a button. The chassis of the GLE Coupé is said to feature different tuning from its sibling, which is aimed at offering a “sportier and tauter” driving experience, with the air suspension fitted as standard on UK cars. The same 48V E-Active Body Control system is also available, which includes the ability to individually control spring and damper forces at each

VW Canada removing front-wheel-drive options from its Atlas
Volkswagen Canada is taking away the front-wheel-drive option on its Atlas SUVs and fitting the trucks 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder with AWD standard, citing low take rates on the FWD.The soon-to-be-released mid-size 2020 Atlas Cross Sport wont see FWD when it hits dealers here in March 2020, reports Automotive News; and when the full-size Atlas gets refreshed for the 2021 model year in mid-2020, itll drop that drivetrain. That means, for the first time, AWD Atlases can be paired with the 2.0-litre turbo four. Having the (all-wheel drive) with the four-cylinder allows us to offer it at a better price point, VW Canada public relations manager Thomas Tetzlaff told the outlet. The people that were on the fence, now weve given them that

Any in-car audio entertainment aside from conversation didn’t really exist until the 1930s, when radio (or wireless, as we should really call it, old chap) technology had progressed enough that receiver sets could be offered, albeit at great expense. It’s no surprise, then, that wireless expert BH Davies wrote in a popularly received Autocar article in March 1925 that “at first sight, the only natural link between motoring and wireless is that both are semi-technical hobbies, the pursuit of which does not necessarily demand a long apprenticeship to engineering, or, indeed, anything beyond a rule-of-thumb knack of handling controls, the purpose of which is vaguely comprehended”. “The two hobbies in England have generally been pursued quite separately,” Davies said, “but in America they are very largely operated in combination, portable wireless sets figuring in the equipment of a great many cars.” The reason that the typical English motorist did not “trouble to pack a costly and fragile apparatus on his car for use at picnics, or whilst staying with friends, or for diversion during a quiet evening at some distant hotel” was primarily because the sets obtainable in this country were not yet adequate for such activity. “The typical British receiver of past seasons demands a full-size outdoor aerial and a decent earth,” Davies continued. “Even at that, it has generally suffered from two egregious faults. Its worst has been a lack of selectivity, which imposed a jangle of Morse signals and ‘mush’ on the broadcast telephony. “Nevertheless, for a considerable time, it has been possible to buy a special type of receiver which practically fulfils the ideal specifiaction for a portable receiver. It eliminates all interference, save atmospheric discharges which are still uncurable, but, fortunately, innocuous on most winter and some summer evenings. “It will operate a powerful loudspeaker at full strength without an outside aerial or real earth, requiring no pick-up inductance beyond a small frame aerial, which may be of the folding type or can be wound inside the lid of a cabinet. Its current consumption is so small that a tiny four-volt accumulator (that’s a battery to you and me) of 20Ah capacity will operate it for 50 or 60 hours on one charge. It has controls so few and so simple that a wholly untechnical woman (or man, come on BH…) in Great Britain can pick up American broadcast programmes with it.” The reason we had to put up with inferior wireless until this time was, apparently, due to the lack of dull emitter valves. Probably won’t find any of those in your DAB radio. The one and only drawback of the ‘supersonic heterodyne’ (brilliant name) receiver was – as has always been and always will be the case with new technologies – price. A ready-made receiver would’ve cost you £75 (the equivalent of about £4480 today). However, most people back then would have constructed their own sets, thanks to instructions provided by specialist magazines, and the principle of a ‘superhet’ was “childishly simple”. “If two stations are broadcating telephony on neighbouring wavelengths,” Davies laid out, “ordinary methods of reproduction will fail to separate the two stations, especially if they are of equal power and equidistant from the listener. But if these two wavelengths are multiplied by some high figure, the margin between them will no longer be narrow, but they can be sundered so completely that the desired signals can be thoroughly isolated with extreme purity. “This is readily achieved by the superhet. A rough and inaccurate description would say that the signals are rectified, transferred to a tremendously higher wavelength, amplified on that new wavelength and finally listened to with the aid of a loudspeaker.” This technique usually required as many as 10 valves, but the superhet could use just five, making several work double jobs. Indeed, wireless technology was progressing at an incredible rate. “This year, the upkeep of a superhet will be less than the yearly bill of a humble headphone two-valver of the 1924 pattern,” predicted Davies. “The newer version rescues the garden from towering masts; and in winter it has the second merit of permitting the owner to enjoy his news or his symphonies in whichever room is most convenient. “Having purchased or built a superhet, the motorist will consider whether the cabinet should be put aboard the car. One imagines the answer in this country will normally be negative. The receiver will measure perhaps 30x10x10in. This is too bulky an article to be welcomed into the stern sheets of the typical 10hp four-seater.” Occasional transportation of this long, narrow box on the rear seats, however, was probable. Examples inluded “the man who is going down to a remote bit of river with his rods, or to some lonely covert with his guns; the hostess who is discharging social obligations by a picnic; the tourist who is exploring the wilds of the Lake

Original ‘Eleanor’ Mustang from newer ‘Gone in 60 Seconds’ for sale
One of the 11 screen-used Eleanor Mustangs from the 2000 film Gone in 60 Seconds specifically the main Dream Car is scheduled to cross the auction block early January, and will likely clear US$1 million. The car was built for the movie by none other than Chip Foose, and it has just about every now-typical resto-mod touch on it, but its this car that has the distinction of being the inspiration for many of those tweak ubiquitous in hot rods now.Being the hero car or Dream Car of the 11, theres nothing fake about this Shelby-inspired 1967 Ford Mustang every component on it works, even the NOS system. This isnt some shell of a car used to model some CGI around, its a real, driveable hot rod.The Dream Car was used for exterior and interior shots, as well as chase scenes through the shipyard, city and along the Los Angeles River. Its the vehicle that likely would have been on-screen the longest. Not all of the 10 or 11 other vehicles used in filming had such cushy roles, or made it out in one piece. The last time this Mustang sold was at Mecum Auctions in Indianapolis, for US$1,000,000 coincidentally the budget of the original 1974 version of the film. The winner of this upcoming auction, held by Mecum in Kissimmee, Florida at the beginning of January 2020, can pretend to be Nicolas Cage, like all the other guys whove resto-modded their vehicles to look just like this one! Except now at car shows, youll have to explain this is one of the originals actually used by Disney to ruin H. B. Halickis legacy.(Okay, yes, were fans of the 74 film, you caught us.)Dont forget the real Eleanor from the old movie is a 1971 Mustang with a 1973 Mustang grille, painted with school-bus-yellow

Aston Martin DBX: pricing confirmed from £158,000
The upcoming Aston Martin DBX SUV will go on sale in the UK from £158,000, with the first official images of the car’s interior now revealed. The car, which is Aston’s first high-riding model and will arrive with the same 4.0-litre, twin-turbocharged V8 as the DB11 supercar, is set to make its debut in Beijing on the 20th November. Order books will then open, with a $189,900 asking price in the USA and €193,500 in Germany. In the UK, pricing is set to include three years of servicing as standard. A single image was released to coincide with the pricing announcement, giving a first official look at the DBX interior, with copious amounts of leather seeking to embody the firm’s characteristic blend of comfort and opulence. Visible details include perforated leather seats, an expansive panoramic glass roof, and wood-finished interior door handles. It confirms spy photos previously seen in September, which showed Aston would continue to use Mercedes-sourced switchgear and technology combined with its own bespoke trim. Previously only a single image teasing the interior had been officially released, showing a portion of the car not clad in its now-familiar prototype camouflage and revealing that a chunky black plastic rear bumper will be available. Bootspace was then confirmed as well, with the DBX’s 632-litre rear loadspace giving it a significant practicality advantage over its Bentley Bentayga rival. The new range of accessories, available from the model’s launch, includes a number of separate options packs to suit the owner’s hobbies and pastimes. The Snow Pack, for example, contains a boot warmer, ski bag, roof-mounted ski rack and set of snow chains. The Pet Pack, meanwhile, brings a bumper protector, a portable washer and a cabin divider, while the more conventional Touring Pack comprises a tailored luggage set with first aid kit and under-seat locker. Additional packages include the Essentials Pack, Event Pack, Interior Protection Pack and Expression Pack. Aston Martin says it has “worked with its trusted brand partners to ensure that it is offering the best solutions to customers, whatever the usage, journey or destination”. Ahead of launch the DBX was papped without any disguise during what looks like a promotional shoot by Spanish site Autopista. As expected, the design has significantly moved on from the concept, with a front-end inspired by the DB11 and details such as a tail-lights that curve up and across the tailgate. Although the car in these images appears to be pink, the DBX in these photos is most likely red, and the effect is simply due to low quality photography. First orders for the high-riding Aston were taken at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance and it made its UK public dynamic debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in July. A video released on Twitter by Aston CEO Andy Palmer gives a very quick glimpse of the car’s front end without any camouflage. Aston Martin Lagonda’s most recent financial update revealed more details on the development timeline of the DBX, which is set to rival models such as the Bentley Bentayga Speed and Lamborghini Urus. Aston started building pre-production versions of the new model at its new St Athan plant earlier this year, ahead of it going on sale in the first half of 2020. The company said it remains on track to begin series production at St Athan in the second quarter of 2020, which suggests first customer deliveries will follow in the second half of next year. The new 90-acre factory in Wales, built on a former Ministry of Defence site, has been under development since 2016 and will be the sole production facility for the DBX. The electric models of the revived Lagonda brand will also be built there. Ahead of the machine’s official launch later this year, Aston Martin previously issued images of the DBX sporting a camouflage livery reflecting its new Welsh home. The machine is currently undergoing final testing using pre-production versions. A video published earlier in the year shows the DBX undergoing extreme weather testing in Sweden at Pirelli’s Flurheden proving ground, part of the two brands’ ongoing partnership. Speaking about that test, Aston Martin chief engineer Matt Becker said: “Testing these prototypes in cold climate conditions helps us to assess the car’s early dynamics and, crucially, ensure confidence-inspiring sure-footedness on low-grip surfaces. “This car propels Aston Martin into a new segment and our engineering team are enjoying the challenges of developing a quality luxury SUV experience through this robust testing schedule. Progress is on track and I am confident that we will deliver over and above what our customers would expect from an Aston Martin SUV.” The DBX is the first Aston Martin to go through a new dedicated test programme, to ensure it can produce the kind of dynamic on-road performance on which Aston has always made its name, allied to some credibility off

Here’s what we can expect from Infiniti by 2023
Infiniti is planning on launching three EVs, two of which will be based on the Q and QX Inspiration concepts, pictured here.Handout / Infiniti TRUTH OR CONSEQUENCES, N.M. Thirty years ago, Nirvana was evolving, shoulder pads were shrinking, and Nissan wasnt about to let Toyota (and Lexus) steal all of the thunder in the luxury segment.Enter Infiniti. The end result of the so-called Horizon Task Force, a group of Nissan engineers and execs who banded together a few years prior, the luxury division launched in the U.S. in November 1989 with just two models: The Q45 luxury sedan, and the M30 coupe. We Canucks had to wait an extra year to get in on the action, and even then, the M30 was forbidden fruit instead, we got the G20 sedan. Since then, Infiniti has made its mark in the luxury segment with some remarkable products if you were in high school at any point between 2003 and 2007, theres a solid chance youve lusted after a G35 coupe. And even though its easy to dismiss Infiniti simply as an answer to the likes of Audi, BMW, or even Lexus, it does carry history: Remember the Horizon Task Force? A few members of that team were connected to the Prince Motor Company, the Japanese marque that merged with Nissan in 1966 and the one behind such cars as the R380 race car and the Skyline. Yes, the Skyline. But dont take our word for it. On its Pearl anniversary, Infiniti has also given us a sneak-peek into its near-future. Here, then, is a look at what we can expect from Infiniti over the next few years. Spoiler alert: Get ready for more crossovers and electrification.New infotainment, better smartphone integration For 2020, most Infiniti models get an infotainment update. The new system is more responsive, sharper-looking, and has Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. Handout / Infiniti For 2020, the perhaps biggest news is the addition of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. It certainly took Infiniti long enough, but hey, its finally here. This is part of a larger, more cohesive infotainment update across the board; in addition to better smartphone integration, Infinitis InTouch infotainment is now quicker, and boasts sharper graphics and the ability to update itself over-the-air. Its available across the lineup, save for the QX60.The rest of the lineup tweaks are relatively minor in nature the 2.0L turbo-four has been axed on the Q50 and Q60, making the 300-horsepower, 3.0L twin-turbo V6 the base engine on those two. The QX50, meanwhile, gains a handful of active driving assists now standard, and the QX80 gets a new gauge cluster with a seven-inch display, as well as fancy metal speaker grilles. In the U.S., Infiniti will offer Edition 30 variants of its entire lineup. Its essentially a cosmetic package available on Q50 and 60, plus the QX50, 60, and 80, adding black accents and wheels, unique badging and colour options, and a few extra bells and whistles. However, these wont be available in Canada, as we didnt get Infiniti until 1990. Not much sense in offering an Edition 29 now, is there? We’re getting more crossovers next year Infiniti’s QX55, essentially a QX50 with a more rakish roofline, is coming next year. Handout / Infiniti This one was almost inevitable crossover coupes are here to stay, and Infinitis getting in on the action with the QX55. It shares its major underpinnings with the QX50 including the 2.0-litre variable-compression turbo-four as well as various interior appointments and exterior bits, but naturally, wears a more rakish roofline thats actually quite reminiscent of the original FX. Infiniti isnt dishing full details on the QX55 just yet, but count on seeing it in dealers next summer as a 2021 model. Itll be closely followed by a redesigned QX60, but Infiniti is tight-lipped on the exact timing for that one.You guessed it — electrification Infiniti is planning on launching three EVs, two of which will be based on the Q and QX Inspiration concepts, pictured here. Handout / Infiniti Infiniti pioneered a handful of tech and conveniences we take for granted these days the 2003 Q45 was the first mainstream car with a back-up camera, and a few years later, the brand took the 360-degree camera system mainstream. Hell, in 1989, Infiniti was the first to offer loaner cars for whenever yours was in for service.Well, in a way, Infiniti is keeping that pioneering spirit going with its commitment to electrification. Powering cars with electrons is nothing new, but in a nutshell, the Q, Qs, and QX Inspiration concepts will inspire three new EVs two sedans, one crossover thatll enter production by 2023. Well see two distinct flavours: A fully electric EV, as well as a gas-generated variant. Both will use the same platform a dual-motor, all-wheel-drive setup but the execution will vary slightly. For fully electric variants, a high-capacity battery pack will live on the floor pan, between the motors living on the front and rear axles. The gas-generated variants, however,

Hits and misses from the 46th Tokyo Motor Show
At every auto show, the Driving team is tasked with scouring the show floor to pinpoint the highlights and lowlights. This years 2019 Tokyo Motor Show was no different. While quieter than it has been in past years with the likes of the Volkswagen Group and Ferrari conspicuously absent among others, the 46th edition of the Show still managed to produce a few gems and some real clangers. Here are our choices for the brilliant and the busts.Motor Mouth, aka David Booth, and Andrew McCredie both picked Mazda and the MX-30 as the show highlight. It is an all-electric crossover with a 33.5-kWh lithium-ion battery in the floor. It delivers a driving range of around 200 kilometres. Now, before the handwringing about the limited all-electric range begins, the MX-30 has an ace up its sleeve: a rotary engine range-extender yes, as in the little engine that made the RX-7 one of the greats along for the ride. It runs on gasoline, but could use hydrogen down the road. The effect would be a clean ride that can be refueled quickly while leaving nothing but water in its wake. It is a future all of us at Driving can get behind!Check out all our latest Auto Show coverageFor me, the highlight and lowlight of the Tokyo Motor Show were one in the same car. The highlight is the Lexus LF 30 Concepts powertrain. Heres a harbinger of what the company that redefined luxury expectations with the launch of the LS 400 in 1989 will do to electrify its portfolio in coming years. The key is found the four in-wheel electric motors that twist out 536 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque from rev-one the instant-on acceleration brings a run to 100 km/h in just 3.8 seconds and a realistic 500-kilometre electric-only range from the large 110-kilowatt/hour lithium-ion battery. The layout of the motors and the operating logic behind them brings front-drive, rear-drive and all-wheel-drive depending upon the need. And, with the ultimate in individual wheel control, it delivers the very best in real-time torque vectoring. The thought of an all-electric LFA-like ride is a mouth-watering proposition and a potential ambassador for the electric movement if it makes it to market. 2020 Mazda MX-30 EV Handout / Mazda The LF 30s style was the lowlight. Back in 2011, Lexus revealed the then-new GS sport sedan at the Pebble Beach Concours dElegance. It was roundly panned as boring. The criticism spurred the company on to reinvent itself and re-imagine the now-familiar spindle grille. With the LF 30 Concept Lexus has not only found yet another new grille expression, it has invented the spindle car! Sometimes too much of anything is not such a good thing after all.David Booths lowlight was the general malaise and lack of excitement found on the show floor. The fact Toyota did not show the rumored replacement for the GT 86 illustrated the fact. Tokyo, of all shows, is where you expect the hype around future technologies to abound. It could be found, but it required a lot of effort. Andrew McCredie took Nissan and Toyota to task for talking the talk, but failing to walk the electric walk. Yes, Nissan makes the Leaf, but it is aging and is in need of a replacement and the Ariya Concept on display at the Show is just that a concept that wont likely see production. Ditto Toyota. It has plug-ins and hybrids galore, but the promise of an all-electric ride remains just that, a promise. Yes, there is the Mirai fuel cell, but its availability is limited. There is a new all-electric vehicle ride being announced in November that will be based on a current Lexus crossover, but it is not coming to

New Seat Mii electric priced from £19,300 in UK
Seat has announced UK pricing for the Mii Electric, its first zero-emissions model, will begin at £19,300, making it one of the cheapest mainstream electric cars available in the UK. Seat is also offering the first 300 buyers fitment of a wall-mounted home charger, a three-pin home charging cable, three years servicing and roadside assistance free of charge. The supermini’s sub-£20,000 price tag is lower than that of its Vauxhall Corsa-e, Peugeot e-208, Mini Electric and Honda e rivals. The new Renault Zoe is available from £18,670 under the firm’s battery leasing scheme, but monthly costs have yet to be revealed. As part of Seat’s ‘easyMOVE’ range simplification strategy, only one trim is available from launch. Standard equipment includes metallic paint, lane assist, fast charging capabilities, 16in alloy wheels, air conditioning and automatic windscreen wipers. Owners can also make use of an associated smartphone app, which allows the climate control, lights and locks to be activated remotely, and gives information on journey times and the car’s location. The Mii Electric shares its drivetrain with the recently revealed Skoda Citigo-e iV and replaces the petrol-engined Mii, which went out of production in July. With an 82bhp electric motor mated to a single-speed transmission, the Mii Electric produces 156lb ft torque, enabling it to accelerate from 0-31mph in 3.9sec and onto a limited top speed of 81mph. A 36.8kWh battery pack gives a WLTP-certified range of 162 miles. That’s 2 miles less than the 164 miles offered by the Citigo-e iV but 79 more than the ageing Volkswagen e-Up. Styling changes over the outgoing Mii are subtle, limited to 16in alloy wheels and the addition of illuminated badging to the back and sides. Unlike the Citigo-e iV, the Mii retains the mesh grille fitted to the petrol car. Inside, the Mii Electric sports a redesigned dashboard, heated, ‘performance-inspired’ seats and a leather steering wheel, handbrake and gear selector. Boot space is unchanged, at 251 litres. The Mii Electric is aimed squarely at “those who spend the majority of their time traversing metropolitan and suburban streets”, says Seat. It can be charged in around four hours to 80% capacity from a 7.2kW home wallbox or one hour from a 40kW public fast charger. Seat said the Mii’s shift to electric power will help prepare its dealerships for the arrival of the el-Born in 2020. Company president Luca de Meo said: “In Europe, the electric vehicle market grew by 46% in the first four months of the year. Moving forward, we expect electrified vehicles to play an important role within our range. “The Mii Electric is the start of that journey and at the same time brings to the market an affordable electric car.” The Mii Electric is the production version of the 2017 e-Mii concept, of which five examples have been used in a car-sharing trial scheme in Barcelona, Spain as part of the new car’s development programme. After Mercedes, Volvo and Audi are bailing out from Montreal Auto Show
The Detroit auto show also known as the North American International Auto Show will, in 2020, leave behind its traditional still-hung-over-from-New-Years January time slot for a new its-not-freezing-any-more date in June.Thatll make LeSalon International de Montréal – a.k.a. the SIAM, still hosted in January the first major North American auto show of the year.Does that mean that, three months before its doors open to the public, the 2020 Montreal International Auto Show will see even more concepts cars, world premières or more firecrackers, rock bands and other fanfare? It doesnt seem like it. In fact, the latest news is two more manufacturers are bailing out of the Quebec rendezvous. The organizers, the Corporation des concessionnaires d’automobiles de Montréal, learned a few days ago Audi and Volvo wont show their new vehicles at the downtown Palais des Congrès during the shows January 17 to 26 run for 2020.That implies Polestar, Volvos new electric-performance brand, which just announced Montreal would play home to its first North American dealership, wont catch any of the eyes of the metropoles Auto Show 200,000 visitors. These two absentees join an already-not-coming Mercedes-Benz; corporate in Germany announced last September the best-selling luxury brand in Canada and the U.S. would be a no-show at all North American exhibitions this year. But, in Montreal, though Mercedes-Benz wont be represented as a manufacturer, local dealerships have accepted the shows offer of a small area outside the main floor, where theyll display their latest products, says SIAM vice-president Denis Dessureault. Its not the first time Montreals automotive rendezvous has to deal with AWOL manufacturers. Most notably, at the turn of this century, a bunch of luxury brands decided to skip the Montreal Auto Show, then held at the Olympic Stadium, over its crashed roof, and organized their own annual event at Place Bonaventure. It lasted only two years.More recently, we saw Porsche drop out of the SIAM picture from 2012 to 2014; it came back in 2015, though Volvo didnt participate that year, nor in 2016.Volvo also bails from Toronto’s CIASWhat about the Canadian International Auto Show (CIAS), scheduled for its 47th run at the Metro Toronto Convention Center from February 14 to 24 next year? Well, theres good news and bad news.Yes, Audi will show its new products in la Ville-Reine, confirms spokesperson Cort Nielsen, adding the Montreal no-show decision was taken by the Montreal dealers. The bad news? Volvo wont participate in Torontos CIAS, despite the auto show being the biggest in Canada with 350,000 visitors and despite Ontarios market registering 42 per cent of all new cars sold each year in the country. For now, only Volvo and Mercedes-Benz are out of the CIAS, though. That brings us to a total of 38 brands for this 2020 edition, general manager Jason Campbell told Driving.ca. He quietly added that the floor space vacated by Benz was quickly grabbed up by competitor BMW-Mini.No confirmations for the 100th annual Vancouver Auto ShowWhen it comes to the Vancouver International Auto Show, an event celebrating its 100th anniversary in March, nothing is confirmed, or not confirmed We dont secure our dealers that quickly, executive director Jason Heard told us.That said, Vancouvers automotive rendezvous already dealt with an absent Mercedes-Benz last year, as did Calgary, Edmonton, Quebec City, New York, ChicagoAnd it could be so much worst. The 2019 NAIAS, the last North American International Auto Show held in Detroit in its usual January slot, had to deal with a much longer list of absentees. Audi, BMW-Mini, Jaguar, Land Rover, Mercedes-Benz, Mitsubishi, Porsche and Volvo all skipped that
