Volvo has detailed the infotainment system in its upcoming electric XC40 ahead of the car’s unveiling next week. The firm claims the system, designed in partnership with Google and powered by Android, offers “unprecedented personalisation” and “improved levels of intuitiveness”, courtesy of inbuilt Google features. The internet giant’s Maps, Assistant and Play Store functions are included. The electric small SUV is also the first Volvo model to be capable of wireless software updates. The system is compatible with voice control, while Google’s mapping software will offer live traffic updates and alternative route and charging station suggestions. The software will also improve the capabilities of the car’s advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) by providing live speed limit and hazard warnings. Volvo’s chief technology officer, Henrik Green, said: “We’re finally giving you the same experience in your car that you’re used to on your phone, but adapted for safe interaction while driving. “And by introducing over-the-air updates for everything from maintenance to completely new features, the car can stay as fresh as your other digital products, always with the latest and greatest features.” Volvo recently released the first teaser sketches of the electric XC40, which is the first step in a plan for more than 50% of the firm’s sales volume to be fully electric by 2025. It’s focused on producing electric versions of its existing models, rather than developing bespoke EVs like rivals such as Volkswagen. Despite that, Volvo has said the electric XC40 will feature a number of design changes to differentiate itself from combustion-engined versions, partly due to the electric powertrain not requiring a large grille to cool the engine. A sketch of the front of the car shows that, as with other EVs, the grille will be replaced by a covered front fascia, which Volvo says will be used to package the sensors for the ADAS. A rear sketch shows that, as with the plug-in hybrid XC40, the charging point will be located on the rear pillar where the fuel filler would normally be. Robin Page, Volvo’s design boss, said the electric XC40’s design would be “even sleeker and more modern” than that of the regular model. He added: “Without the need for a grille, we have created an even cleaner and more modern face, while the absence of tailpipes does the same at the rear. “This is the approach we will explore more and more as we continue down the road of electrification.” Volvo has also revealed the EV will feature a “brand new driver interface” that has been developed for its electric cars. It will also be offered with two new 19in and 20in wheel options and in eight paint colours. The interior will feature new “sporty styling details” and carpets made from recycled materials. The electric XC40 will also feature a small, 30-litre front storage space – also known as a ‘frunk’ – under the bonnet in the space freed up by the absence of a combustion engine. The XC40 is one of Volvo’s most popular models, and the electric version will be revealed on 16 October. While few technical details of the model have been given, it will follow the EV trend, with motors mounted at the front and rear and the battery located under the floor. Volvo has said it aims to maintain its established reputation for safety with the new model, with safety boss Malin Ekholm saying: “Regardless of what drives a car forward, be it an electric motor or combustion engine, a Volvo must be safe.” The front structure of the XC40, which is built on Volvo’s Compact Modular Architecture (CMA) platform, has been redesigned to account for the absence of an engine. Volvo has also developed a “unique” new safety structure: a safety cage around the battery made from aluminium and embedded in the body structure. Volvo says this creates a built-in crumple zone around the battery and lowers the car’s centre of gravity. The car has also been reinforced at the rear through the integration of the electric powertrain into the body structure, with the intent to shift any forces caused in a collision away from the passenger area. The electric XC40 will also be the first model fitted with Volvo’s new Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) sensor platform, which is designed for expanded autonomous capabilities in the future. While no details have been given about the electric powertrain, it’s likely to be similar to that used by sister brand Polestar’s 2, which was revealed earlier this year and is also built on the CMA platform. That car uses a 27-module, 78kWh battery pack. The powertrain in the performance-focused Polestar 2 is claimed to produce 402bhp and 487lb ft, with a ‘target’ range of 311 miles on the WLTP cycle. The electric XC40 is unlikely to offer as much power or torque, due to the differing goals and target markets of Volvo and Polestar. The electric XC40 will be the second electrified version of the model, joining the XC40 T5 Twin Engine plug-in

Polestar 2 gets handling-focused Performance package
Newly indepenedent performance brand Polestar has announced a chassis upgrade package for its electric fastback, the 2. The Performance Pack adds £5000 to the list price of the standard model, which will first be offered in a fully loaded Launch Edition, costing from £49,900. Included is a range of modifications aimed at enhancing the car’s dynamic appeal, in the same vein as Polestar Engineered versions of models from parent company Volvo. The 2’s front brakes gain four-piston Brembo calipers, while both axles receive adjustable Öhlins dampers and 20in forged alloy wheels over the standard 19in set. Added visual differences come courtesy of gold seatbelts, brakes and valve caps. Joakim Rydholm, chassis development chief at Polestar, said: “We spent a lot of time obsessing over the finest details of the Performance Pack chassis setup to find the car’s sweet spot; we call it the ‘Golden Ride’. “Comfortable but focused, we want you to feel positively connected to the road, the car alive and communicative but balanced and predictable. It really is unlike most electric cars. It feels Polestar.” The 2’s 402bhp twin-motor powertrain goes unmodified, meaning the Performance variant is still expected to offer 311 miles of range and a sub-5.0sec 0-62mph time. UK customers can order the 2 Performance from Polestar’s online-only dealership now, with the company anticipating deliveries to commence in July next year. An entry-level version is expected to follow, priced from around £34,500 to strengthen the 2’s position against the Tesla Model

News Roundup: Foolish mall parker gets boxed in, jerk Jaywalker hits a pole and more
Welcome to our weekly round-up of the biggest breaking stories on Driving.ca from this past week. Get caught up and ready to get on with the weekend, because it’s hard keeping pace in a digital traffic jam. Here’s what you missed while you were away.Mall customer parked in the wrong spot gets instant paybackA shopper at an Argentinian mall who thought they’d found the perfect oversized parking spot for their small Peugeot 208 hatchback was instead served up a lesson in properly reading signs. The car was parked in the shopping cart area of the mall, but that didn’t stop the employees responsible for returning the carts to their home. A photo taken by another shopper and posted to Facebook shows the car surrounded on all sides by row after row of carts, and judging by the 7,000+ shares, few people feel sorry for the bonehead Peugeot driver. Quebec moves up mandatory winter tire date by two weeksQuebec residents have fewer than 80 days to have snow tires installed on their vehicles if they plan to keep (legally) driving them on provincial roads this coming winter season. As of December 1, 2019 – a full two weeks earlier than last year’s date – all cars must be wearing the appropriate tires as outlined in a significant 80-point revision of the province’s Highway Safety Code. Those cars that don’t have winters from Dec 1 to March 15 not only run the heightened risk of an accident, but may also face fines of $200-$300. Study reveals top 10 cars kept the longest by original ownersA recent study conducted by online car search engine iSeeCars has rounded up the top 10 vehicles that owners keep the longest. On the list are five sports cars, three SUVs and one sedan. Toyota vehicles took four of the ten spots, with the Land Cruiser leading the list with an average ownership period of 11.4 years. The second longest-kept vehicle is the Chevrolet Corvette at 10.4 years, while the third spot goes to another sports car, the Mercedes-Benz SL-Class. Find out if your trusty ride made the list right here. Watch karma instantly and hilariously repay this stubborn jaywalkerIf you scrub to the 3:49 minute mark in the above video, you can clearly see the crosswalk a few metres up the road from where the man decides to cross in downtown Hamilton. When the car, which has a dashcam, honks but stops to allow the pedestrian to jaywalk across the street, the man stares down the driver HARD. But when he gets to the other side, eyes still locked on the driver, he walks right into a pole on the sidewalk. Is there anything more satisfying than watching a jerk get his comeuppance? Why a U.K. driver spent nearly $50k fighting a $165 speeding ticketA British man and former RAF electronics specialist has spent nearly $50,000 and three years disputing a $165 speeding ticket he received for allegedly doing 57 km/h in a 50 km/h zone. The man, who was sent the fine after being captured by a traffic camera, claims he’s been wrongly ticketed due to something called the “double Doppler effect,” which can cause cameras to incorrectly measure a vehicle’s speed when radio waves bounce off a second vehicle. Years and tens of thousands of dollars later and the man has given up and paid the fine. He still owes over $10,000 in legal fees, however, and is considering whether to go for another

MG ZS EV gets extended discount offer following record sales
MG has extended its attractive discount on its ZS EV after it recieved 2000 orders in the first two months of going on sale. The offer, which will be available to the brand’s next 1000 UK customers, will continue to see MG match the government’s £3500 plug-in car grant on the top-spec Executive model, bringing its list price down to £23,495. The entry-level ZS EV Excite will get a £3000 discount, which when paired with the government grant, brings the price down to £21,995. According to data supplied by the SMMT, MG sold 1078 units in total in June 2019, highlighting the ZS’s initial sales figures as a significant surge in demand. While it took longer for the ZS EV to reach 2000 sales, it is hoped the extended discount will continue momentum for the affordable EV. “Since the official launch of the ZS EV in July, MG dealerships across the country have reported unprecedented demand from customers eager to get behind the wheel,” Daniel Gregorious, MG UK’s Head of Sales Marketing, said. “Our mission at MG is to make high-tech, zero-emissions cars available to all, and we are well on our way.” Once the next 1000 examples have been sold, the ZS EV will be available from £24,995, including the government grant. Although largely unrivalled in its position as a value electric compact SUV, the ZS EV represents a much more affordable alternative to the Kia e-Niro, which starts from £32,995 after grant. The ZS EV’s chief rival, Hyundai’s Kona Electric, is priced slightly higher at £27,250, but is currently off-sale in the UK, with prospective buyers encouraged to join a waiting list. Like Hyundai and Kia, MG is applying a seven-year warranty to all ZS models sold in the UK. The discounted price puts the ZS EV among the cheapest electric cars available in the UK. The ageing Citroen C-Zero is the only mainstream EV available for less, at £17,020 including the grant. The ZS EV was first revealed at the Guangzhou motor show in China last year, and will be sold alongside the existing petrol versions of the ZS. The UK-bound ZS EV makes use of a front-mounted electric motor, producing 141bhp and 260lb ft. The car’s water-cooled 44.5kWh lithium ion battery is good for a 163-mile range on the WLTP test cycle, and is capable of rapid charging from flat to around 80% capacity in half an hour. Styling changes over the conventionally fuelled model are minimal, and limited to the integration of a charging point in its blanked off grille, and the addition of a newly designed set of 17in alloy wheels. Inside, standard equipment includes an 8in touchscreen, satnav, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, Bluetooth and DAB radio. The ZS prioritises interior space and practicality, with a split-level boot and several hidden storage areas maximising load capacity. “We’re delighted to be entering the electric car market at such an exciting time,” said Daniel Gregorious, MG’s head of sales and marketing. “With MG’s trademark value-for-money approach, we’re confident that we can help more and more new car buyers to go electric.” UK sales of the EV weren’t confirmed at its global debut last year, but now come as part of the steady growth of the MG brand worldwide and its transition to being a maker of SUVs. MG is enjoying sales success in China, under the ownership of SAIC. Last year, it sold 134,786 cars, a significant increase over the 80,389 sold in 2016. That success accelerated in 2018; MG had already surpassed its 2017 total by the end of August, having sold 179,109 cars. China is the world’s largest market for electric cars, and ranges in excess of 250 miles are now the norm there, rather than the exception. The ZS EV first made its debut alongside the new HS SUV, which is understood to be lined up to replace the GS in MG’s UK range later this

Customer parks like jerk, gets pranked with shopping carts
A customer at a supermarket in South America faced the wrath of disgruntled employees when they parked their car in the wrong spot.According to Fox News, the driver parked their small Peugeot 208 hatchback in the shopping cart area of a COTO shopping centre in Temperley Argentina, in the Buenos Aires province.Thats a top score in the being-a-jerk department, so employees responded by putting the shopping carts in their rightful spot anyway, all around the vehicle, boxing it in.A witness, Arnold Angelini, said he noticed the scene at around 11am on his trip to the store. What I saw generated surprise and indignation because I said park wherever, he said. The weird thing is that the car was really badly parked and the (shopping carts) were put later. He parked wherever he wanted.Photos of the prank were posted on Facebook, courtesy of Angelini. The post has now gone viral with almost 7,000 shares. The truth is someone has to be a moron to have parked in the section for shopping carts, he posted. You cant be such an SOB and leave it anywhere. It shows that nobody respects anything but an improper place.Angelini also adds the most surprising thing about the whole ordeal was how the employees reacted. It is their job and they are tired of the same thing happening to

Hamilton jaywalker gets immediate retribution after arrogant stare down
A man illegally crossing the road in Ontario has been served with instant karma, after staring down an oncoming vehicle. The incident is visible at 3:49.The video shows a man illegally jaywalking across the road near Upper James street in Hamilton, Ontario. As the camera car comes around the corner, he stares it down while continuing to cross, causing the vehicle to have to slam on its brakes. The driver honks their horn, causing the man to stare down the vehicle and slowly cross the street, before getting to the other side. Now, this is irritating not only because the man shouldnt have been crossing at that part of the road, but because he had the arrogance to stare down the vehicle honking and barrelling toward him like they were doing something wrong. Pedestrians do have the right of way in almost every case, but still, they shouldnt be using that to their advantage, especially when faced with a 2-ton lump of steel.Luckily, the mans hubris gets a quick dose of poetic justice when he gets to the other side, only to finally turn his head in the proper direction and right into a concrete pole.Although he walks off like nothing happened, if youve ever even slapped a concrete pole you know they dont tend to waiver. Hopefully, the man got a healthy ego-destroying nose bleed, and the mindfulness to use a crosswalk like a decent human being next

DMV finally gets licence plate ‘pee’ joke after 15 years, revokes it
A driver in New Hampshire has just had her vanity plate yanked by the dour wanks at the states Department of Motor Vehicles despite it having adorned her vehicles for the better part of 15 years. Things really do move at a sloth-like pace at the DMV, eh?The sin committed by Wendy Auger of Rochester, for which she was (eventually) reprimanded? Daring to invoke a bodily function. Not an offensive one, mind you, simply in the form of an exhortation every parent since the dawn of the automobile has uttered at their offspring do you need to PBE4WEGO? Alas, the state rules out plates referencing human excretions of any sort, making this tag a line-crosser.DMVs on this side of the border have also been called out as grim-faced and heavy-handed. Up here in the Great White North, a Nova Scotia man is currently rowing with that provinces registrar over his plate, one which bears his own European surname.Apparently, another motorist took umbrage with his GRABHER plate, conflating it with a certain statement made by a certain politician Stateside. In the broad expanse of Saskatchewan, another driver was denied his surname as a vanity plate, too, though this one was slightly more understandable. The DMV rejected the mans request for an ASSMAN plate, even though it is pronounced Oss-men. In this instance, the motorist exacted his revenge by wrapping the entire tailgate of his truck with the word. What do you think of these bureaucrats decision to yank Augers plate? Whats the most creative one youve ever seen? Be sure to chime in

Honda Civic Si gets updated for 2020
2020 Honda Civic Si CoupeHonda Honda is giving its iconic Civic Si a small makeover for the 2020 model year that includes a minor facelift, as well as a few much-needed hardware upgrades. The changes are mostly cosmetic, with a revised front fascia that features new glossy fog light surrounds; and LED headlights for the coupe. The sedans rear bumper has been massaged to better match the front-end design, while both models get new infotainment systems. Honda has even changed out its awful touchscreen volume controls for a physical knob, simplifying an action that doesnt need to be complicated by touch controls. The powertrain remains the same except for the final drive ratio, which according to Honda is six per cent shorter. That means that acceleration should be improved while still retaining the same transmission ratios. The Sis six-speed manual is the only option for the Civic, coupled to the venerable 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder, which pumps out 205 horsepower and 192 lb.-ft. of torque. The sound of the engine will also now be piped into the cabin, like in a BMW, using a system Honda is calling Active Sound Control. On the inside, the seats have also been revised, as has the dashboard to include more red trim. A set of 18-inch matte black wheels are now standard on the Si, with all-season tires fitted. Summer tires are an added-cost option. For the driver who prefers a little fun, the Civic Si occupies a perfect space in Hondas lineup; it offers a manual transmission and enough power to get you in a little trouble without having to step up (and mark-up) to the Type
