Tesla rolled out its Version 10 software update this past weekend, a suite which includes, among other new tricks, the long-awaited Smart Summon feature.The feature seems like one small step for the California automaker, but its one giant leap for car-kind: Smart Summon is the first piece of tech to apparently allowing a car to drive to its owner with nobody at the wheel.Sure, its only meant for short distances, and Teslas been telling owners they need to have a clear line of sight to the car to use it, but its still pretty neat.Where have you parked your Tesla?But also, who cares?Our Smart Summon feature means your car collects *you* from the parking lot. pic.twitter.com/boEtjJlY1V Tesla (@Tesla) September 26, 2019The car will drive toward the owner, as long as they have their finger on a button on an app; lifting their thumb stops the car if it has a problem.From the looks of Teslas video, it seems pretty cool, and looks like it works well. Tesla cut the starting price of its Model 3 — and it’s making investors nervous

Tesla cut the starting price of the Model 3 sedan in the U.S. weeks after a federal tax credit shrank in half, renewing concern over whether the electric-car maker can sustain sales with less support from incentives.The Model 3 now starts at US$38,990, according to Teslas website. Arndt Ellinghorst, an analyst at Evercore ISI, wrote in a report Tuesday that the halving of the U.S. tax credit to US$1,875 at the beginning of July is causing the company to reduce prices to support demand.The key question remains will Tesla be able to sustain itself given steadily declining ASPs and worsening mix? Ellinghorst wrote, referring to the average selling prices of the companys vehicles dropping as the Model 3 becomes a greater share of deliveries.While the starting price of the Model 3 has dropped, Teslas moves to simplify its lineup include dropping a standard-range version of its larger and more expensive Model S sedan. The cheapest version available is now US$79,990, according to the companys website.Tesla also cut prices on all vehicles shipped to China, with the Model 3 dropping to 355,900 yuan (US$51,764) from 377,000 yuan, according to a Tesla representative. Prices of the Model S and Model X were cut about 4 per cent to 776,900 yuan and 790,900 yuan, respectively.The changes wont affect prices of Model 3s that will be produced near Shanghai, according to the representative. Seat tech boss: it’s ‘possible’ to stop cars speeding for good

One of the Volkswagen Group’s senior figures in in-car technology has confirmed it has reached the point where governments could insist that cars no longer break speed limits. Leyre Olavarria, head of connected car and infotainment for Seat, admitted that cars actively preventing drivers from breaking a speed limit does not pose a technical challenge, given ‘intelligent speed assistance’ will be made mandatory from 2022.  Asked what would happen if governments legislated for cars to no longer be capable of exceeding speed limits, in order to reduce road casualties and remove the cost of buying, installing and maintaining networks of speed cameras, Olavarria told Autocar: “From a technical perspective, it is possible. We can do it. It’s more a legal issue; how do regulators want to position themselves. It’s not a technical challenge to do that – the data is available.” Some experts envision a future where drivers may choose to opt out, and switch off any system that prevented them from breaking a speed limit, in much the same way it is possible to cancel the electronic stability control system of some cars. As the connected car and associated data becomes commonplace, many drivers have expressed concerns over the potential for data to be used against them. Olavarria said that, at present, GDPR data protection law clearly defines that data associated with driving remains private and the property of the owner of the vehicle. “We are GDPR-compliant, and that is our priority. The data belongs to our customers and they are the only ones who can release the data. But if the law changes, then we will change as well and adapt our policies,” said Olavarria.  Modern cars already alert the emergency services in the event of a serious accident. And Hyundai recently revealed that it was working with MDGo, a company that specialises in medical artificial intelligence systems, to provide detailed predictions about likely injuries to vehicle occupants, based on the forces involved, deployment of airbags and more.  Olavarria manages Seat’s new software development centre, which is leading research and development solutions around micro mobility on behalf of the Volkswagen Group. She defines micro mobility as being based on small vehicles, with two, three or four wheels, that will be used over short distances. “Looking into the future, there are many cities… that are trying to push the car out of the city centre but still there are mobility needs; people need to move from A to B. That’s what we are focused on,” said Olavarria.  “As we are based in Barcelona, in the city centre, it’s kind of the perfect playground to test and make rapid prototyping in the real environment, and know about the city and mobility partners and better understand citizens’ needs and how mobility needs are changing.” Seat claims to be platform agnostic, exploring subscription services that could, in the future, allow for individuals to subscribe to a mobility service that is priced according to a monthly mileage that allows users to seamlessly switch from a car to public transport to electric scooter or autonomous vehicles. French authorities return classic ute after realizing it’s not built for smuggling

An Australian automotive enthusiast living in the U.K. found himself in a bit of hot water with French customs when they deemed his 1970 Holden HG ute a smuggling vehicle, threatening to crush it and hand him a fine along with a jail sentence. Thankfully, after a year of explaining the ute is just obscure and not criminal, the owner is getting it back. It began when Travis McKimmie bought the well-maintained HG in the Netherlands and had it put on a truck and shipped to England. Along the way, a French customs patrol dog caught the scent of cannabis and sniffed out a small amount of years-old pot that was tucked in the vehicle’s spare wheel. Oh, mon dieu, un joint! Then, during a more thorough search, officials uncovered what they suspected to be a pair of smugglers’ compartments under a hatch at the rear of the vehicle. That’s when they impounded the vehicle and handed McKimmie a €70 fine for the cannabis.   In actuality, the two 4020 cm hatches were created by the automaker itself. See, the Holden HG was built on a sedan or station wagon floorpan, so when the brand put a steel panel over the footwells to fashion the bed of the ute, it left two hollow compartments below. Some people put nothing in them, some put ice in them, and others, apparently, fill them with drugs. McKimmie was first told the vehicle would be crushed, then informed that instead French customs would use it as an educational tool for spotting smuggling vehicles. But he wasn’t having any of it. He bought the car fair and square and wasn’t about to let a little stale weed stand in the way of the restoration he had planned. So he began an education of his own, sending photos and emails and information to French customs, explaining the history and strange but explainable build of the Holden. At first the customs officials resisted, even threatening McKinnie with a heavier fine and a jail sentence if he challenged their decision. But he didn’t relent. After a year in the impound (for which McKinnie was charged €280) and many emails sent on its behalf, the vehicle is finally on its way to the U.K. “I finally got the end of the story that I wanted,” McKimmie said in a Facebook post in late April. “People in the U.K. don’t get it they just think it’s a old pick up as they call them over here but to me it’s a bit of Aussie

GM says it’s definitely building an electric pickup

2019 GMC Sierra AT4Costa Mouzouris After recently backing away from partnership talks with EV truck-maker Rivian only to have Ford jump in, and following a trail of hints at an electrified SUV or pickup, GM has announced it’ll be developing an electric pickup truck of its own. CEO Mary Barra confirmed the company’s plans to enter a product into the electric pickup segment during an investor call this week. It’s basically a no-brainer for GM as much of the competition already announced their plans to produce electric pickups. This includes Ford, which just last week made public its plans to drop $500 million into Rivian in addition to previous announcements to develop a hybrid and EV F-150, and Tesla, which is also getting into the pickup game. The GM truck—likely a Sierra or Silverado as both of the current generations were built to work with other power sources, namely electricity—will line up beside GM’s other current and future E-vehicles, including the upcoming nameless electric Caddy SUV and the Chevrolet Bolt. That’s about all we’ve got for details at the moment: It’ll be a pickup, it’ll be a GM and it’ll be electric. But it probably won’t be here anytime soon.

If the return of the Ford Bronco gets you all hot-and-bothered, more things will be tingling once you check out the Zero Labs Bronco. Featuring the retro styling inspired by the original Bronco, Zero Labs’ recreation throws it back to the days of classic 44 adventures — but with much more power, courtesy of what’s hiding under the hood. No, there isn’t some hopped-up Ford 302 under there. Instead, there is a brushless, permanent-magnet AC motor that produces 434 horsepower and 277 lb.-ft. of torque, a big step up from the anemic straight-six in the original. Sending power to all four wheels is a five-speed manual gearbox, which is unconventional for an EV, considering the torque of the engine and the fact that it doesn’t need to continue spinning when the vehicle is stopped. To make sure you get to your destination in style, there is a 70 kWh battery pack good for 190 miles, or 305 kilometres. If the journey requires a stint in the dirt, a two-speed transfer case, high-performance front and rear differentials, an adjustable coilover suspension and Brembo six-piston brakes will get you there. Over 1,000 new parts are used, while the original chassis has been significantly modified to accept the electric drivetrain. The body is completely carbon fibre, making it very light, and the interior can even be ordered with vegan materials. The instrument panel has even been designed to mirror the original. Zero Labs is only building 150 of the initial production run, so if you want one, you’d better act fast. It won’t be cheap, either — pricing is expected between US$200,000 and

After years of record-breaking performances, some of the most popular luxury brands kicked off 2019 with a whimper. Granted, auto sales on the whole are falling. After five consecutive record years, 2018 volume dipped marginally. Through 2019’s first three months, total industry volume has declined by more than 4 per cent. Plunging car sales and slowing pickup truck momentum deserve some of the blame, but decreased demand for many of Canada’s favourite premium-badged vehicles plays a significant role, as well. Mercedes-Benz, BMW, and Audi – Canada’s three top-selling premium auto brands – combined to lose 3,750 sales in 2019’s first quarter, a year-over-year drop worsened by decreases at Acura, Alfa Romeo, Lincoln, Jaguar, Land Rover, and Maserati. In total, premium brand auto sales are down by nearly 7 per cent. With no manufacturer-supplied monthly reports from Tesla, it’s difficult to obtain firm figures for the Model 3. Based on data from Canada EV Sales, Model 3 demand plummeted following Ontario’s rebate removal, from a high of 1,540 Ontario sales alone to merely 49 in January. For the time being then, there’s no Model 3 on this list of Canada’s 10 top-selling luxury vehicles in 2019’s first-quarter. With sales reports from the Global Automakers of Canada, these are Canada’s luxury leaders so far this year. 10. Infiniti QX60: 1,159, up 41 per cent No vehicle on this list has gone longer without a major redesign than the QX60, which debuted as the JX35 in early 2012. The QX60 has consistently been Canada’s favourite Infiniti despite the fact that it only partially veils its proletarian Pathfinder underpinnings. Yet having never topped 5,000 sales in the past, Infiniti is on track for over 6,100 QX60 sales in 2019. Infiniti’s other utility vehicles combined for a 16-percent uptick in Q1. 9. BMW X1: 1,283, up 2 per cent There’s no shortage of competition for the X1 right inside BMW’s showroom, but X1 sales continue to rise. Including the X1 and its X2 offshoot, sales of BMW’s two smallest utility vehicles are up 28 per cent so far this year. The duo combines to produce more than one-fifth of the brand’s Canadian volume. Gone are the days when BMW’s 3 Series was Canada’s top-selling premium automobile – the 3er only ranks fourth in BMW’s own lineup. 8. Acura RDX: 1,518, down 3 per cent Not likely to remain in the red, the new third-generation Acura RDX is just exiting the transition phase and is likely to soon see positive forward sales momentum. The RDX is hugely important to Acura, which has seen its car sales slow to a trickle (the RDX outsells Acura’s entire car lineup by a wide margin) and suffered meaningful MDX decline, as well. 7. BMW X5: 1,521, up 25 per cent On track for a huge year of more than 8,000 sales, the X5 is the most costly vehicle on this list of best sellers. Pricing begins above $70,000 – none of the others even start above $60,000. Yet the X5 is now producing significantly more sales than similarly sized mainstream SUVs like the Nissan Pathfinder, GMC Acadia, and Subaru Ascent. X5 demand was not slowed by the arrival of the larger X7 in March. BMW Canada reported its first 180 X7 sales while X5 volume jumped 30 per cent to 504 units. 6. Lexus NX: 1,544, down 2 per cent Anyone who thought the NX’s face was too controversial for mainstream success was, evidently, wrong. So common is the NX half a decade into its tenure that its divisive face is now almost normal. Nearly 30,000 NXs have found their way into Canadian driveways since 2014. Even if the current pace of modest decline continues in 2019, Lexus will still likely add over 5,500 more NXs to the tally by year’s end. 5. Lexus RX: 1,635, down 0.2 per cent Perennially a U.S. luxury sales leader, the Lexus RX remains popular in Canada despite a recent loss of momentum. The RX was long Lexus’ most affordable utility vehicle. Now, two nameplates – the NX and new UX – sit beneath the RX. Lexus has nevertheless expanded the RX lineup to include a three-row RX L, and that vehicle could swing the tide in the RX’s favour. March volume, for example, was up 20 per cent. 4. Mercedes-Benz C-Class: 1,640, down 35 per cent There is but one passenger car on this list of Canada’s 10 top-selling luxury vehicles. This is it. You won’t find the BMW 3 Series here, nor the Audi A4. Meanwhile, C-Class sales are plunging along with sales of its traditional rivals. A4 volume is down 40 per cent this year; 3 Series sales are down 38 per cent. The C-Class is outselling both, combined. 3. BMW X3: 1,653, down 14 per cent Although BMW is currently producing over 200 monthly Canadian sales with its specialty utility vehicles – the X2, X4, and X6 – the brand’s first forays into the luxury SUV market remain the most popular.
