The mayor of Montreal rode in a steam-powered car 120 years ago today

Today marks a special day in history: 120 years ago, on November 21, 1899, Raymond Prfontaine became the first mayor of Montreal to ride in an automobile. And its likely there wasnt much of Montreals infamous road construction to dodge, because there wasnt really much in the way of roads back then, anyway. Most were dirt, dusty in summer and muddy in winter. He was driven around by Ucal-Henri Dandurand (pictured above in his French-made De Dion-Bouton, sometime between 1903 and 1912), who took him out in a steam-powered Waltham automobile hed bought and had shipped up from Massachusetts.Dandurand claimed his Waltham was the first car in Montreal, although historians say there were at least three automobiles in the city prior to that. But Dandurand, a real estate developer, loved to make headlines, and he took Prfontaine on their historic ride the day the car was delivered.Quebec was actually a hotbed of auto activity in the early days, dating right back to Canadas founding year of 1867. Thats when Henry Seth Taylor, a watchmaker in Stanstead, built a steam-powered carriage that most consider to be Canadas first car.Taylor crashed it at an event he never bothered to put brakes on it and stashed it in a barn. It was found a century later and restored, and is now owned by Ingenium (the former Canadian Science and Technology Museum) in Ottawa.A Quebecer also built what’s thought to be the first gasoline-powered car in Canada. Working in Sherbrooke, George Foote Foss completed his car in the spring of 1897.He only built one Fossmobile, as he called it, but in 1902 he moved to Montreal and started distributing the Crestmobile, built in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Some people think Dandurand made his historic journey with the mayor in a Crestmobile, but thats not so. The Crestmobile was still under development at the time and given George Foote Foss ties to the American car, and its similarity to his Fossmobile, many believe he had a hand in its design. Its not clear if Dandurand bought the Fossmobile, but he was photographed with it. And in Montreal he was also famous for an enormous recreational vehicle he commissioned, which looked like a Pullman railway car and could sleep eleven people. It cracked the floor when it was displayed at the 1913 Montreal Auto Show, and reportedly never left the city because none of the bridges could hold its

After Mercedes, Volvo and Audi are bailing out from Montreal Auto Show

The Detroit auto show also known as the North American International Auto Show will, in 2020, leave behind its traditional still-hung-over-from-New-Years January time slot for a new its-not-freezing-any-more date in June.Thatll make LeSalon International de Montréal – a.k.a. the SIAM, still hosted in January the first major North American auto show of the year.Does that mean that, three months before its doors open to the public, the 2020 Montreal International Auto Show will see even more concepts cars, world premières or more firecrackers, rock bands and other fanfare? It doesnt seem like it. In fact, the latest news is two more manufacturers are bailing out of the Quebec rendezvous. The organizers, the Corporation des concessionnaires d’automobiles de Montréal, learned a few days ago Audi and Volvo wont show their new vehicles at the downtown Palais des Congrès  during the shows January 17 to 26 run for 2020.That implies Polestar, Volvos new electric-performance brand, which just announced Montreal would play home to its first North American dealership, wont catch any of the eyes of the metropoles Auto Show 200,000 visitors. These two absentees join an already-not-coming Mercedes-Benz; corporate in Germany announced last September the best-selling luxury brand in Canada and the U.S. would be a no-show at all North American exhibitions this year. But, in Montreal, though Mercedes-Benz wont be represented as a manufacturer, local dealerships have accepted the shows offer of a small area outside the main floor, where theyll display their latest products, says SIAM vice-president Denis Dessureault. Its not the first time Montreals automotive rendezvous has to deal with AWOL manufacturers. Most notably, at the turn of this century, a bunch of luxury brands decided to skip the Montreal Auto Show, then held at the Olympic Stadium, over its crashed roof, and organized their own annual event at Place Bonaventure. It lasted only two years.More recently, we saw Porsche drop out of the SIAM picture from 2012 to 2014; it came back in 2015, though Volvo didnt participate that year, nor in 2016.Volvo also bails from Toronto’s CIASWhat about the Canadian International Auto Show (CIAS), scheduled for its 47th run at the Metro Toronto Convention Center from February 14 to 24 next year? Well, theres good news and bad news.Yes, Audi will show its new products in la Ville-Reine, confirms spokesperson Cort Nielsen, adding the Montreal no-show decision was taken by the Montreal dealers. The bad news? Volvo wont participate in Torontos CIAS, despite the auto show being the biggest in Canada with 350,000 visitors and despite Ontarios market registering 42 per cent of all new cars sold each year in the country. For now, only Volvo and Mercedes-Benz are out of the CIAS, though. That brings us to a total of 38 brands for this 2020 edition, general manager Jason Campbell told Driving.ca. He quietly added that the floor space vacated by Benz was quickly grabbed up by competitor BMW-Mini.No confirmations for the 100th annual Vancouver Auto ShowWhen it comes to the Vancouver International Auto Show, an event celebrating its 100th anniversary in March, nothing is confirmed, or not confirmed We dont secure our dealers that quickly, executive director Jason Heard told us.That said, Vancouvers automotive rendezvous already dealt with an absent Mercedes-Benz last year, as did Calgary, Edmonton, Quebec City, New York, ChicagoAnd it could be so much worst. The 2019 NAIAS, the last North American International Auto Show held in Detroit in its usual January slot, had to deal with a much longer list of absentees. Audi, BMW-Mini, Jaguar, Land Rover, Mercedes-Benz, Mitsubishi, Porsche and Volvo all skipped that

The first North American Polestar dealership will be in Montreal

The Polestar 2 features a 440-kilometre full-charge range and a price of $69,000 for a fully loaded model.Polestar Volvos tuning-arm-turned-full-EV-manufacturer, Polestar, is opening its first dealership in North America. The location chosen for the premiere store? Montreal.According to Automotive News, the Swedish brand, now owned by Chinese company Geely, will open up its first retail store on Groupe Park Avenue, in Brossard, Quebec near Montreal.Hugues Bissonnette, a Quebec native, has been appointed the brands Canadian manager. Hugues was most recently the director of sales operations for Volvo Cars Canada; now he will spearhead all of Polestars Canadian commercial efforts.Hugues has the right skill set, developed over time working in both the Americas and Europe, and I am confident he will have great success launching Polestar in Canada, Gregor Hembrough, head of Polestar in the Americas, said in a statement. The company calls the dealerships Polestar Spaces, and this latest Space will be run in partnership with Groupe Park Avenue, which runs 18 auto dealerships split between 12 different brands. The Polestar dealer will have no inventory, however; the vehicles will be made to order. On top of this principal Space, there will also be smaller retail Spaces in high-traffic areas closer to downtown that can house two or three cars and a few no-commission product specialists and demonstrators.Polestar Montreal will open in 2020, and will be followed by Polestar Spaces in Toronto and Vancouver before making its way down to the

Schwarzenegger sets Greta Thunberg up with Tesla Model 3 to Montreal

Tesla Model 3Tesla Climate activist and scolder of world leaders Greta Thunberg will be travelling to various North American events this month including one in Montreal in a Tesla Model 3, courtesy of none other than Arnold Schwarzenegger. The actor-turned-politician apparently made the offer after learning of her travel plans in Canada and the States during this leg of her climate crusade. While your author and many others associate Terminator and Predator movies with the former California governor, Schwarzenegger has lately been using his influence as a call to action on environmental issues. This friendship between Schwarzenegger and Thunberg may seem random, but the two have been on the same climate page for ages. The muscle-bound actor said he was starstruck after meeting the young activist earlier this year at an environmental summit in Vienna. Given his willingness to help her with her efforts right now on this side of the pond, its safe to say the sixteen-year-old made quite an impression on him.Schwarzenegger isnt new to the electric car scene, having had a Hummer H1 converted to electric power by an outfit called Kreisel Electric. Those of us with long memories will recall the actor was one of the first (if not the first) to take delivery of a civilian Humvee when they were released to the general public back in the 1990s. An electric conversion, then, ties the mans then-and-now interests together very well. After taking the world to task in a speech delivered at the UN last week, Thunberg continued to Montreal where she lead an estimated 500,000 people on that days climate strike. These events, held around the world, are intended to highlight climate change and spur people into taking real

What is Montreal doing to avoid e-scooter injuries and deaths?

An unidentified Lime Scooter users ride the bike path along de Maisonneuve Street in Montreal, on Wednesday, August 21, 2019.Allen McInnis / Montreal Gazette One week into Montreals experiment with dockless electric scooters, the man responsible for the growing cocktail of mobility options crowding the citys streets is sounding pretty irked.Despite regulations described as some of the strictest in the world, reports are multiplying of Lime e-scooters abandoned on sidewalks, of riders driving without helmets, and of near-misses with pedestrians and drivers. We created a system of rules based on making the operator responsible for enforcing them, and we are not satisfied, said ric Alan Caldwell, the citys executive committee member responsible for urban planning and transit.Despite our rules on parking, there are still many reports of e-scooters, and we have seen it ourselves, that are improperly parked. We are not satisfied. We will meet with the operator and demand they fix the situation, and improve it.If not, he said, Lime, which introduced roughly 200 e-scooters onto the streets of Montreal last week, and painted 239 designated zones on city streets where the scooters are supposed to be parked, will be fined.Parking issues could be the least of Montreals worries, however. Touted as the next green alternative because theyre easy to ride and backed by millions in venture capital funding, the use of electric scooters has exploded worldwide. One study showed the number of trips doubled in the United States in one year alone, to 84 million trips in 2018.The rapid growth has led to several tragedies. An investigation by the Associated Press combined with more recent figures indicate at least 11 people have died in the U.S. since 2018 while riding a rented electric scooter. A Lime Scooter is parked next to a trash dumpster outside Arsenal in Montreal, on Wednesday, August 21, 2019. Allen McInnis / Montreal Gazette Canadian municipalities have tread cautiously, with the first pilot projects launched in major cities this summer. Calgary reported 85,000 trips taken in the first two weeks after e-scooters debuted in mid-July. It tried to limit accidents by requiring riders to stay on sidewalks, within parks or on bike lanes, and limiting speeds to 20 kilometres an hour. Despite that, physicians reported 60 scooter-related emergency room visits in two weeks, one third of which involved fractures, mostly of wrists and elbows. About 10 per cent of injuries were to the face or head. Calgary doesnt require helmets. In a statement, Lime said the company has invested more than $3 million in safety awareness campaigns and distributed 250,000 free helmets globally. It noted first-time users must watch a training video. The company said e-scooter users experience about the same rate of injuries as cyclists, although other studies have found injury rates for scooter users were actually twice as high. Since scooters are often used in the place of cars, where accident rates are far higher, they lower the overall injury rates, Lime argues. It wouldnt say how many trips have been taken to date in Montreal. Montreal is working to limit accidents by outlawing usage on sidewalks, limiting speeds to 20 km/h and requiring helmets. Police are responsible for ensuring safety regulations are followed, and there has been increased police presence on city bike lanes in the last week. Police said they do not have figures yet on the numbers of infractions handed out.Tragedies in other cities as well as unbridled growth Paris found itself with 20,000 e-scooters operated by 12 different startups have led to a tightening of restrictions. The mayor of Nashville, Tenn., threatened to cancel e-scooters outright after a fatality there. In Atlanta, usage has been banned at night. Firms have taken to locking out users after midnight to reduce cases of e-scooter drunk driving.Caldwell notes that Montreal is starting cautiously. We are far from the situation of chaos that other cities have experienced, he said. The idea is to offer more mobility options without interfering in the lives of others. It should be an added bonus, not an obstacle. Since its a pilot project, regulations can and will be modified, he said.Vigilance will be needed. Bird Canada, another e-scooter supplier, is reportedly in talks with the city to roll out its e-scooters this

A six-day provincial crackdown on speeders launched by Quebec police forces on June 7 the start of Montreal Grand Prix weekend saw more than 12,700 tickets handed out by police, about 50 of them for extreme violations of the posted speed limit.Extreme speeding violations occur when speed limits of 60 km/h or less are exceeded by 40 km/h or more; when limits of more than 60 or 90 km/h are exceeded by 50 km/h or more; and when the limit of 100 km/h is exceeded by 60 km/h or more. The crackdown was a joint effort of Quebec police forces and the provinces automobile insurance board (SAAQ), and coincided with the kickoff of June 7 thru 9 Grand Prix weekend in Montreal. While police officers working in 7,000 speed traps handed out the more than 12,000 tickets across the province, Quebecs photo radar network was activated more than 30,000 times by vehicles exceeding the speed limit during the week-long crackdown; two-thirds of those incidents occurred during the Grand Prix

41 per cent of Montreal roads in great shape, better than 2015: city

Construction detour road sign in Montreal Wednesday December 7, 2016.John Mahoney / Montreal Gazette A total of 41 per cent of Montreal’s 1,665-kilometre network of arterial roads are in “excellent or good condition,” a 2018 inventory of the city’s main thoroughfares has found. Sylvain Ouellet, the city’s executive committee member responsible for infrastructure, noted in a statement late May that only 21 per cent of the city’s main roads received a passing grade when the last checkup was conducted in 2015. “The investments made by the city of Montreal have borne fruit,” he wrote. “Montrealers can see that more and more roads have been redone and it shows. Our administration will continue on this course.” The latest survey, which was conducted between July 4 and Aug. 19, 2018, and examined 14,114 streets, found that 39 per cent of the city’s  roads were in “very bad or bad” condition, compared with a finding of 55 per cent in the same category in 2015. The examination included assessments of cracks and fissures in road surfaces, variations in road levels and ruts caused by vehicular wear and tear, as well as potholes. The city will divide its road assessments into two categories—arterial roads that will be  examined every two years because of heavier traffic, and local, less-travelled streets that will be inventoried every four years. The next assessment of local roads is scheduled to take place this year. The complete, street-by-street results of the city’s latest inventory can be found on its open data

Listen to these Montreal comedians’ viral parody songs about car names

Étienne Dano is a well-known humorist (and comedian, and TV/radio collaborator) in Québec. Arnaud Soly is a newer talent, with a knack for, among other things, parody songs based on weird themes. Think cities’ names, subway stations and—cheese. A week ago, both met at Auto St-Hubert, a used vehicles dealership on Montreal’s South Shore, to show people while they may not have the greatest voices in town, they know their way around parody songs. And cars. In fact, they know enough to craft this two-minutes spoof video – where it’s a matter of Volvo coucher avec moi ce soir – that went viral on Etienne’s Facebook page, with over 400,000 views in just three days. Among the 15 or so short singing clips transformed to relate to vehicles, you’ll recognize “Hyundai is gonna be the day” from Oasis’ Wonderwall; as well as the infamous jingle from Da Giovanni’s restaurants. (This time, it’s “Dodge Giovanni” that will stick in your head for days…) In our opinion, the best is their take on a classic The Beatles’ tune: “Hey Juke/ Don’t make Outback/ Take a Saab song/ And make it Boxster” Even if you don’t recognize “J’ai de la misère en Chrysler/ J’ai du Nissan-timent dans le sang” from the Québec group La Chicane; or “Journey d’a Buick” sung to the tune of Richard Séguin’s Journée d’Amérique, don’t worry: subtitles are there to help your
