BMW reveals Vision M Next as part of EV update The concept comes as BMW announces it is two years ahead of schedule BMW has unveiled a new concept – the Vision M Next – as part of a range of announcements that include it is currently two years ahead of schedule for its electric vehicle plans. The BMW Vision M Next is a plug-in hybrid concept clearly inspired by the current i8, and emphasises BMW’s focus on driver’s cars at a time when autonomous driving concepts are popular. The 600hp (441 kW) PHEV is powered by a four-cylinder turbocharged petrol unit, supported by an electric motor. All-wheel drive or rear-wheel drive modes feature, and the Vision M Next will complete the 0-62mph sprint in three seconds before reaching a top speed of 186mph. Despite the performance potential, the concept will still cover up to 62 miles on a single charge, and there are two driving settings – Ease and Boost. Ease offers complete autonomous driving, while Boost allows the driver to take charge. Other technology featured includes facial recognition to unlock the car, an AR heads-up display, and Laser Wire lighting technology. No word has been given as to plans for whether it will go into production or not, though it is expected that many of the design elements and PHEV systems will be brought forward onto forthcoming models. In more tangible news, BMW has confirmed that it plans to have 25 electrified models available in 2024, two years ahead of its initial target of 2025. A steep sales curve is predicted, seeing electrified models climb more than 30% per year up to 2025, and sales are expected to double between 2019 and 2021. BMW will also introduce eDrive Zones as standard in plug-in hybrids from next year, which allow geo-fencing technology to automatically recognise these models within green zones, designed for emissions-free driving. Here the BMW PHEVs will switch to pure-electric mode automatically, so they have the same access rights in zones as pure-electric models.

SMMT urges next PM to seek automotive-focused Brexit deal
Car industry bosses have called on the UK’s next prime minister to prioritise a trade-oriented Brexit deal, claiming that delays caused by a no-deal Brexit could cost the manufacturing sector £50,000 a minute. That figure comes from a new UK Automotive Trade Report published by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), that looks at the potential costs caused by delays at the UK/EU border. The SMMT states that, because car production facilities depend on a ‘just-in-time’ operating model, any delayed order of components or materials from abroad would have a significant knock-on effect, which could result in a £70 million per day penalty in the worst case scenario. The financial impact of these delays would be compounded by heavy trade tariffs imposed by the World Trade Organisation, amounting to £4.5bn globally for passenger car trade alone, to which the UK would be subjected in the event of a no-deal Brexit. The SMMT claims the commercial freedom cultivated by the customs union and single market has helped the UK automotive sector grow from £47bn in the wake of the 2009 recession, to £101bn in 2018. This 118% increase was due, in part, to the fact that 80% of vehicles produced in England were exported to the EU. According to the SMMT’s report, the UK and EU trade 3.3m new cars annually, with the UK also shipping £5.2bn worth of components and £2.9bn of engines to production facilities across the continent. Automotive production accounts for 14% of all UK goods, with vehicles and parts shipped to 160 countries worldwide. Any threat to the country’s ability to trade affects not just its economic standing, but the livelihoods of the 168,000 people employed across the sector. The SMMT warns that, without automotive’s £18.6bn-per-year contribution to the national economy, the UK would fall from 10th biggest global exporter of goods, to 14th. A Brexit deal must, argues the organisation, encourage the survival of both a competitive business environment and healthy market. The SMMT forecasts that an automotive-focussed agreement could increase the UK’s automotive trade value by up to 20%. The SMMT’s chief executive, Mike Hawes, said: “We are already seeing the consequences of uncertainty, the fear of no deal. “The next PM’s first job in office must be to secure a deal that maintains frictionless trade because, for our industry, ‘no deal’ is not an option and we don’t have the luxury of time.” In April, the UK car manufacturing sector slumped 44.5% compared with the same period in 2017, as a result of numerous factory shutdowns timed to coincide with Britain’s original EU departure date. It was the 11th consecutive month in which manufacturing output

Official: Aston Martin Valhalla confirmed as next Bond car
It’s not the only Aston to feature in the film, however. Also confirmed to appear in some capacity will be the DB5, returning after its explosive featuring in the 2012 Bond film, Skyfall. There will also be an Aston Martin V8, first seen in The Living Daylights back in 1987. Aston confirmed its hypercar, sitting underneath the faster and pricier Valkyrie, would take the Valhalla name earlier this week. Taking its name from the warriors’ paradise referred to in Norse mythology, it’s powered by a V6 hybrid powertrain expected to make over 1000bhp. It’ll enter production in late 2021. The first Aston Martin to appear in a Bond film was the DB5, which featured in Goldfinger in 1964. It boosted sales dramatically and started a relationship between the franchise and the brand that has spanned over five

BMW’s 3 Series wagon is saying good-bye to Canada next year
Photos leaked mid-June of the wagon variant of the new BMW 3 Series, a good-looking Touring model that unfortunately won’t be headed for Canadian shores. Yes, the 2019 model year will mark your last chance to get a 3 Series station wagon here for a while, apparently. Der 3 has always been a worldwide staple for the brand, even in the face of ever-increasing SUV and crossover sales threatening sedans. And while spy pics of the new 3 Series Touring have been floating around the internet for a while, they’ve always shown a wagon draped in several iterations of camouflage. These images, posted by a member of Germancarforum, are allegedly the “first pictures G21”. Given what we’ve already seen, they’re surely not too far off the real thing. If accurate, the 3 Series Touring will be a bit of a looker. Its front end mimics that of the sedan, with angry headlights and a hood cutline that mercifully vanished during the redesign. The side looks familiar, too, at least until one get to the C-pillar. It might just be our jaundiced eyes, but that wagon liftback glass looks a lot more steeply raked than the old 3er wagon. Combined with taillights seemingly lifted part-and-parcel from the sedan, this is one car we hate to see go but love to watch leave. Twin sewer-cannon exhaust tips look righteous, too. We emailed the folks at BMW Canada, who confirmed our suspicions this über-wagon won’t be coming to our country. “The BMW 3 Series Touring, currently on sale as a model year 2019,” said Rob Dexter of corporate communications, “will not be part of the 2020 BMW 3 Series lineup in Canada.” The decision is understandable, as the Touring likely makes up a very small slice of the sales pie in this country. If you’re looking for a new Drei – German for three – Series Touring, then, best get yourself down to a BMW dealer before the 2019s

Audi kills off TT in the name of expanding EV lineup—the R8 may go next
2019 Audi TT RSHandout / Audi Audi will cease making the iconic TT coupe and replace it with a battery-powered model as the luxury brand accelerates an electric shift that may also see the next version of its flagship A8 sedan go emission-free. Audi is also mulling an end to the US$170,000 R8 sports car as Volkswagen’s biggest profit generator focuses resources on the rollout of 20 fully-electric cars by 2025. Sales of electrified vehicles, which include hybrids, are set to account for 40 per cent of deliveries by then, Audi said Thursday at its annual shareholders meeting in Neckarsulm, Germany. “We’re shedding old baggage,” Chief Financial Officer Alexander Seitz said. Because of tighter emissions regulations, “combustion cars are getting more expensive in the medium-term, and electric cars are getting cheaper.” Audi is pushing to regain lost ground to rivals Mercedes-Benz and BMW as it struggles to emerge from the diesel-emissions scandal that shattered the manufacturer nearly four years ago. The brand’s woes culminated in the arrest of former CEO Rupert Stadler last year and a 800 million-euro (US$895 million) fine. Parent VW can ill afford Audi to falter, and the group’s cash cow plans to revive profits with 15 billion euros in savings by 2022. Audi has been making the two-door TT since 1998. At the time, the model’s sloping roof and sleek design signaled a shift away from its reputation for staid sedans. Audi will replace the TT with a new electric car “in a few years,” it said. “There will be lots of things that we won’t do any more in the future, or things that we do less,” Audi Chief Executive Officer Bram Schot said. “We focus maximum resources on our key projects.” Audi unveiled the revamped flagship $84,000 A8 sedan in 2017, with a new-generation model due around

Four rare — and original — Shelby Cobras heading to auction next month
1967 Shelby Cobra 427 S/C RoadsterHandout / Mecum Mecum will auction off four rare (and original) Shelby Cobras next month from the estate of late car collector Steven Juliano. Per MotorAuthority, the snakes up for auction will be a 1967 427 S/C Roadster and a 1966 427 Roadster, plus a 1965 289 Dragonsnake and a 1964 289 Roadster. The ’67 S/C ticks all of the boxes of what you’d expect the classic Cobra to be, fitted with the outrageous 427 cubic-inch Ford V8. Side pipes, hood scoop, roll hoop, and wide hips are all present. On top of that, it’s an S/C model, short for Semi-Competition. Only 31 of these vehicles were converted from race cars into street spec, making them an extremely rare beast — especially this one, with only 10,760 miles on the clock. The second car is a 1966 model-year Cobra. It’s also fitted with a 427, but lacking the side pipes, hood scoop, and roll hoop — all of which makes it almost rarer and more unique than the S/C. It traded hands in the U.S. a few times before heading to Japan in 1987, where it was kept in perfect shape until 2010, when Juliano acquired it. The oldest Cobra here is a 1964 Factory Stage III outfitted with a 289 cubic-inch V8. This race-spec snake is the only one in the world built for street use, and was originally finished in Princess Blue before the first owner sent it back to the factory to be repainted in Ford Rangoon Red. It is considered to be one of the most highly optioned Cobras of its day. The last Cobra is a real doozy, a 1965 Dragonsnake, originally built by Shelby for drag racing and one of only six to have that distinction. It was specially ordered in yellow by brothers Don and Mike Reimer to match their Thunderbird tow vehicle. This one is also a Factory Stage 3 car. Each Cobra is estimated to sell around the US$2 million mark. The auction will take place between May 14 and 19 in Indianapolis, Indiana. Take Our
