Are the standard Porsche 718 Boxster and its sister, the 718 Cayman, just too milquetoast for you? Do you simply not have enough consonants in your life?Then the boffins at Porsche have an answer for you, the 718 Boxster T and Cayman T.Filled to the gunwales with performance-enhancing features to sharpen its handling when compared to a non-T Boxster or Cayman, these new models will include the PASM Sport Suspension as standard equipment, along with a mechanical limited-slip diff and Porsche Torque Vectoring.The inclusion of those natty suspenders mean shorter springs are on-board, plus re-tuned adaptive dampers and a ride height thats about an inch closer to terra firma. The Sport Chrono Package is also standard.Just dont go looking for more power. The 718 Boxster T and 718 Cayman T are powered by the same 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder boxer engine as the standard Boxster and Cayman models, developing 300 ponies and 280 lb.-ft. of twist.In conjunction with the optional PDK transmission and using the Launch Control feature, both variants can reach 96 km/h from a standstill in just 4.5 seconds. Eagle-eyed spotters will spy the Agate Grey mirror caps and rollover protection bars. Now, in an effort to encourage Miata restorations, the brand is introducing a new list of authentic reproduction parts for first-gen models. Mazda consulted Miata Clubs and specialty shops to curate the list of over 1,100 new and legacy parts, all of which it plans to re-manufacture in Japan. The location chosen for the premiere store? Montreal.According to Automotive News, the Swedish brand, now owned by Chinese company Geely, will open up its first retail store on Groupe Park Avenue, in Brossard, Quebec near Montreal.Hugues Bissonnette, a Quebec native, has been appointed the brands Canadian manager. Hugues was most recently the director of sales operations for Volvo Cars Canada; now he will spearhead all of Polestars Canadian commercial efforts.Hugues has the right skill set, developed over time working in both the Americas and Europe, and I am confident he will have great success launching Polestar in Canada, Gregor Hembrough, head of Polestar in the Americas, said in a statement. The company calls the dealerships Polestar Spaces, and this latest Space will be run in partnership with Groupe Park Avenue, which runs 18 auto dealerships split between 12 different brands. Mini’s first all-electric Cooper debuts, arrival date in North America uncertain
Mini took the covers off its all-electric Cooper SE early July, showing off a hatchback designed to make city driving emissions-free.Sporting classic Mini styling, you probably wouldnt notice at first glance that the Cooper SE is an all-electric vehicle.The EV makes a respectable 181 horsepower and 199 lb.-ft. of torque from its 135-kW electric motor; thats enough to dodge and weave through downtown traffic.Its also enough to get the small hatch to 96 km/h from zero in 7.3 seconds, which is about the same as a turbocharged three-cylinder Mini.The Mini is based on the older i3 platform, which BMW says fits perfectly where the engine used to be. The 32.6-kWh battery will help the SE reach a range of about 183 miles, which is slightly down on what were seeing with other brands recent EVs. The battery can be charged up to 80 per cent in 35 minutes or less when using a fast charger, and can also be charged using a standard 120-volt house outlet or Level 2 charger. Inside the cabin, the Mini is standard fare: not much has changed in here except for some colour-matched switches and lights. The large central information screen is still there, with touchscreens available in 5.5-, 6.5- and 8.8-inch sizes. Apple CarPlay and wireless charging are also available.While Mini has said we should expect the Cooper SE to show up on North American shores, it hasnt released a timeline for when thatll happen. North Macedonian firm turning ancient Zastavas into EVs
When you think of the perfect electric vehicle, is it a massive, luxury sedan with gobs of horsepower and comfort; or is it a 1960s Italian-styled supermini? You know the answer to that.Turns out this perfect EV exists, and its the product of BB Classic Cars, located in the capital city of North Macedonia, Skopje.Usually, the firm just restores vehicles, but now with the help of government funding, its converting some to electric power as well, marking the countrys first EV effort.The Zastava 750 is essentially a copy of the Fiat 600, so you get the funky Italian styling without the giant price tag. And now that its been converted to electric, it should be reliable, too.The Zastava was originally from Yugoslavia, where it was powered by, essentially, a sewing machine. Now in place of the engine is an electric motor, powered by a 10-kWh battery pack.It only takes three hours to charge it up from a home charger, and that is good enough for 150 kilometres of classic motoring. At fast-charging stations, the charge time drops to just 15 minutes. North Macedonia has high hopes of joining the EU where emissions rules are very strict, but currently the country, sandwiched between Albania and Bulgaria, has a major polluting problem chalked up to car emissions and coal-burning. Subsidies for EV buyers will hopefully increase the prevalence of zero-emissions cars, helping their chances.The price of the small EV is just 20,000 euros about $30,000 which means it undercuts a lot of other offerings from big brands, and offers a lot more

Christina McLachlan with the 2019 Jeep Cherokee she tested for a week.Al Charest/Postmedia CALGARY — Jeep has a long tradition with its Cherokee model dating back to 1974 when it first introduced what was then a sporty, two-door vehicle made to be taken off the beaten path. Fast-forward 45 years to the freshly facelifted 2019 Cherokee. The vehicle is now a unibody midsize utility vehicle competing in a rather crowded segment that includes models such as the Hyundai Santa Fe, Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4. In North America, the Cherokee became the more compact Liberty for the 2002 model year, and that moniker lasted until 2013 – when the Cherokee label was re-applied to its redesigned four-door, midsize configuration. For 2019, Jeep has given the Cherokee an all-new front fascia and an aluminum hood. Also new are the bi-LED headlights. Inside, the Jeep features slightly increased carrying capability with a larger cargo bay, complete with the option of a power liftgate. In Canada, the Cherokee is available in eight trims. The base model is the Sport and moves all the way up to the well-equipped Overland. The Jeep can be had in front-wheel drive or four-wheel drive, and there are now three different engines to choose from; a 2.0-litre turbocharged 4-cylinder, a 2.4L normally aspirated 4-cylinder or a 3.2L V-6; all are backed up by a nine-speed automatic transmission. In Calgary, driver Christina McLachlan got to spend a week in the North 44 edition of the newest Cherokee, and with destination charge and options it rang in at $44,185. McLachlan learned to drive in St. Thomas, Ontario. Her dad was a ‘car guy’ who was always buying and selling interesting vehicles, and McLachlan got to drive an array of cars from DKWs to Jaguar MkVIIs. Her first car was a Simca, followed by a pair of Austins. After moving to Calgary in 1979 and over the years, she and her husband have owned a number of different vehicles, from Oldsmobiles to Subarus. The couple recently downsized, however, and McLachlan sold her all-wheel drive Hemi-powered 2010 Dodge Charger. They now rely on a 2008 Jeep Liberty for all their driving needs. “We’ve always had front wheel drive or all-wheel drive vehicles,” McLachlan says of one of the most important features they look for when buying a car. “Comfort is always up there, too, as we’ve done a lot of driving across Canada and into the U.S. And, style plays a role, too.” The revised Cherokee ticked off all of those boxes. “I liked the looks of it right away,” McLachlan says of her first impression. “It had a sporty stance and appeared ready to take on whatever you threw at it. Always a favoured colour, the red (Velvet Red Pearl paint, $100) with the black trim appealed to me, and I did like the black wheels (part of an $895 package).” McLachlan has always appointed her vehicles with leather seating surfaces, but the Jeep Cherokee North was outfitted with cloth – regardless, she found it was easy to slide herself into position behind the steering wheel. And, once there, she found the driver’s seat effortless to position and was overall a comfortable place to be. McLachlan’s husband, Art, is 6 foot 1 and wears cowboy boots and a cowboy hat – that means he often tries on vehicles like others might test fit a shirt. For him, their Jeep Liberty accommodates his height and his clothing preferences – so too does the Cherokee North. McLachlan found many of the controls and gauges easy to identify and manipulate. However, when wanting to take a peek at the optional $2,590 turbocharged four-cylinder engine, it did take her a minute to locate the hood release latch. Performance of that turbocharged powerplant was appreciated. “I do tend to have a bit of a lead foot,” McLachlan admits, and adds, “I felt the Cherokee moved along quite nicely, and the turbo really gave it some extra gumption out on the highway. But it did feature stop-start technology, and I’m not a fan of that. When you stop, and the engine shuts off, I don’t like that momentary hiccup when you take your foot off the brake and press on the throttle again.” Depending on how far off-road a buyer wants to go, Jeep offers three versions of its four-wheel drive system for the Cherokee models – Jeep Active Drive I, Jeep Active Drive II and the aggressive Jeep Active Drive Lock. Drive I is a more basic system with a revised and lighter weight ‘rear drive module’ that disconnects the rear axle when the extra traction isn’t required – this is the system McLachlan had in her tester. “The Cherokee felt very well connected to the road,” she says, “and we thought the ride was pretty smooth. You still know it’s a four by four, but for us, it was a very smooth ride. “Unfortunately, I didn’t get to take the Cherokee off-road to test its limits, I would have liked to experiment with the different modes in the Selec-Terrain system.” McLachlan remained impressed by the Cherokee, however, and that included her appreciation for the increased

Volkswagen to introduce compact SUV, Tarek, to North America
Volkswagen is apparently bringing another SUV to North America. It’s called the Tarek; it’s slightly smaller than the Tiguan, so meant to challenge the likes of the Subaru Crosstrek, Honda HR-V and Kia Soul; it’s already on sale in China as the Tharu (pictured above); and its new North American presence is probably not supposed to be public knowledge just yet. The news was revealed by Volkswagen of Argentina, who outlined the Tarek’s future during a press announcement covering new investments at a local factory. Whether this was an intentional world-first announcement or not is a little hazy (probably not), but either way Autoblog Argentina was able to get its hands on this image of the distribution map, showing the Tarek’s migration from China where it exists as the Tharu, to Canada, the U.S., Mexico, Brazil and Argentina. Volkswagen has yet to announce any official information about the North American Tarek, including what powertrain it’ll get, but in China, the brand builds the front-wheel drive Tharu on its MQB architecture. It carries a 1.2-, 1.4- or 2.0-litre turbo engine making 116, 150 and 186 horsepower respectively, all of which are tied to a seven-speed DSG transmission. The Tharu measures 175.3 inches long, 72.5 inches wide and 64.3 inches tall, with a 105.5-inch wheelbase. Comparatively, the 2019 Volkswagen Tiguan is 185.1 inches long, 72.4 inches wide and 66.3 inches tall, with a 109.8-inch wheelbase. 2019 Mazda CX-5 finally gets a diesel for North America
2019 Mazda CX-5 dieselHandout / Mazda What is it? Mazda’s long-awaited diesel finally arrives in Canada. Why does it matter? Mazda has been trying to bring its oil-burner to our shores for years. There’s been all sorts of theories — I’m not sure if they actually qualify as conspiracies — as to its long delay: a lack of performance, not enough reliability or simply not enough production capacity. My personal theory is that Mazda wanted to emulate what they thought was Volkswagen’s ability — illusory, as it turns out — to reduce NOx emissions without having to inject urea into the engine. If VW could do it, surely so could the engineers from Hiroshima. We know how that story ended. Whatever the reason for the delay, Mazda swears its 2.2-litre turbodiesel is really coming this time and it will first appear in the Signature version of its compact CX-5 crossover. Said Skyactiv-D is said to pump out 168 horsepower and an even more stout 290 lb.-ft. of torque, while sipping fuel at a pretty-darned-low-for-an-SUV 8.5 L/100 kilometres overall. Sensing some hesitance amongst potential buyers, Mazda devoted an entire paragraph of its press release to meeting North American emissions regulations, noting that it adopts “special combustion control software and exhaust treatment to meet the strictest emissions regulations” and that the company “worked closely with all proper federal and state agencies in the U.S., such as the EPA and CARB, to ensure the Skyactiv-D 2.2 engine passes all appropriate regulations.” Paranoid much? When is it coming? Possibly later this summer, if summer ever arrives. Officially, all Mazda says is the second half of 2019. Should you buy it? I drove an early version of the Skyactiv-D 2.2 some years ago and it was an impressive piece of kit, free revving for a diesel and plenty torque, to boot. One presumes it has only gotten better in the ensuing three or four years. Better late than never, I suppose, and I suspect that if the Skyactiv-D proves popular in this little crossover, we’ll see it in other “Signature” Mazdas as

Audi RS6 Avant Wagon could be coming to North America
The Audi RS6 Avant produces 553 horsepower and 516 lb.-ft. of torque. And its not for us.Handout Audi is poised to drop a bombshell on the North American market with a slew of new vehicles that haven’t yet seen our soil, including the much-fawned-after RS6 Avant Wagon. According to Car and Driver, Audi Sport’s research and development chief Oliver Hoffmann says some of its new products are going to be heading to North America. We are preparing for the biggest product offensive we ever had, he said. We will also see a new RS Q8, plus the next-generation RS7 Sportback. However, the big news here is that RS6 Avant. Audi pulled its wagons from the North American market after the C5 generation and didn’t offer the vehicles for lack of interest. That is all changing, however, with the North American market starting to turn onto wagons once again, and Audi is willing to place its bets the Avant will stand out amongst all the CUV craziness. The U.S. market is increasingly interested in real station wagons like the RS6 Avant, Hoffman adds. Therefore, it is entirely possible that we will bring it back to North America. Currently, European market versions of the fast-brake makes up to 553 horsepower from its 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8. The closest thing we’ve gotten to the latest generation of RS6 Avant has been the RS7 Sportback, which shares a lot of the DNA.
