Volkswagen ID. Space Vizzion conceptHandout / Volkswagen What is it?If youve lost track of all the ID. prototypes since Volkswagen unveiled its first I.D. Concept in Paris four years ago, let us explain Volkswagens ID. Space Vizzion Concept like this: This is the ninth concept of the electric-vehicles series although were still waiting for a production vehicle on what the company calls its modular-electric-drive-matrix.The first thing youll note if you care about punctuation is that, somewhere along the road, the I.D. became ID.. For another, the Space Vizzion is effectively yet another concept (to be) built on Volkswagens MEB dedicated-platform for battery-electric vehicles. Now, just in case you forgot the previous eight ID. prototypes, it started with the I.D. compact hatchback at the Paris Motor Show in 2016 and includes a small SUV, a couple of Microbus-style vans, a racecar, and even a dune buggy.VW describes this umpteenth prototype as combining the aerodynamic design of a Gran Turismo with the spaciousness and versatility of an SUV. All of which is to say: Its a station wagon. Actually, to be more accurate, its a long station wagon: Stretching almost five meters 4,958 millimetres to be exact from bumper to bumper, were talking Audi S7 Sportback or Tesla Model S length.Check out all of our latest auto show coverage hereWhy does it matter?Well, for now, it doesnt, because were not even getting the first mass-produced EV heralded by these highly promoted concepts: The first VW ID.3, a small electric car to be launched next summer, wont reach North American shores. Rather, the company is waiting for 2021 to send us the ID.4, a four-door crossover variant, based on the VW ID. Crozz Concept unveiled two years ago.But if VWs promises made imperative by a certain Dieselgate scandal are to be believed, this ID. Space Vizzion Concept unveiled at the Los Angeles Auto Show might matter for Canadians. After all, station wagons have always been (a bit) more popular in Canada than in the U.S. enough, in fact, that VW is one of the rare manufacturers to (still) offer one in its lineup, even arranging extra production of the soon-departing, seventh-generation Golf Sportwagen and Alltrack. When is it coming?Dont hold your breath, or you might turn into that weird Saintly Blue Pearl Effect colour showcased on the prototypes body best described by VW as a new metallic white with shimmering blue and violet pigments. You want more bizarre? The interior is made of AppleSkin, in lieu of leather. Yes, youll be sitting on leftovers from apple juice production. Kids should love it. But back to our specifics: VW says the concept previews a potential production car for Europe and North America. This is a bit less assertive than VWs previous statement suggesting the production version will launch in late 2021 with different versions for North America, Europe, and China.Should you buy it?Too early to tell. For now, we are promised a rear-mounted motor for 275 horsepower that can be paired with a second, 101-horsepower coaxial drive motor. The latter would give all-wheel-drive capability and up to 335 horsepower. This 4Motion variant of the ID. Space Vizzion, with its 82-kWh lithium-ion pack, is said to be good for 482 kilometres more or less Tesla Model 3 range and can sprint from zero to 96 km/h (60 mph) in five

Want a Maserati Levante? Consider these other super sport-utes, too
2019 Maserati Levante GTSHandout / Maserati So, you want a Maserati SUV — a really fast one: Well, your timing is impeccable. Two years after the launch of the Levante, its first SUV, Maserati has followed up with the new GTS. Essentially the Quattroportes twice-turbocharged 3.8-litre V8 plunked into the engine bay, the Levante GTS boasts a Porsche Cayenne Turbo-challenging 550 horsepower and an equally stout 538 lb.-ft. of torque. Now, if numerical one-upmanship matters to you, know that the GTS is officially a little slower than the Porsche, Maserati claiming it takes around four seconds to scoot from rest to 100 km/h, while the Cayenne Turbo can get there a smidge faster with the Sports Chrono package. You wouldnt know it from the drivers seat, though. Once you get the (admittedly hefty) 2,170 kilogram Levante rolling, the thing is the proverbial rocketship, seemingly getting faster the more it gathers speed. Its hard to remember anything short of a supercar with such immediate roll-on throttle response. One second youre doddling behind a semi, the next youre getting a notification from air traffic control that youre cleared for takeoff. Seriously fast is this Maserati and if you want even more, theres a Trofeo version with even more 590! horses. Seriously, if you need an SUV with more horsepower than the Levante is now offering, you need therapy. It doesnt quite sound the part, though. Oh, it bellows and roars, but after the symphony of the V6 in the Levante S creates, I expected more of an intoxicating V8. Only as musical as a Porsche V8 might not sound like much of an insult, but if youre ever driven the Levante S, youd know my disappointment. Maybe the Trofeo ups the ante. Not much else ruins the ride. The suspension variable, natch is firm when you need it; supple if not. The seats, swaddled in the most hedonistic of leathers, will flatter your behind. Theres room a-plenty in the rear seats, and even if the cargo area isnt the most commodious among comparable SUVs, its still plenty roomy. The Harman/Kardon sound system is faithful in its aural replication, but it could stand a few more decibels when Billy Idol starts lamenting his ex-girlfriends White Wedding.Even Maseratis MTC+ infotainment system is top notch. Oh, the graphics may be six months out of date thats 48 months in Silicon Valley years but, based on Chryslers UConnect system, its one of the most capable touchscreen systems in the segment. Nothing fancy no gesture control, for instance, just straight-up good programming. The GTS also does right by your wallet that is, of course, if youre filthy rich. The base price $138,500, some $3,300 cheaper than the equivalent Cayenne Turbo. Like Porsches ubiquitous SUV, the GTS can get pricier quickly, my test unit optioned out to a cool $155,540. But thats also true of all of Porsches Turbo models, not just the Cayenne, notoriously expensive when you throw in the doo-dads. 2019 Porsche Cayenne Turbo Brian Harper / Driving You still want the Porsche: Of course you do. Porsche fans are only slightly less devoted deluded? than Tesla fanatics, so no matter what I say here, the Levante will never going to outsell the Cayenne. That said, I dont have anything really bad to say about the Cayenne Turbo. As I mentioned, Porsche would make toilet paper a (costly) option in a public bathroom, were it in the commode business. But pricing issues aside, its a more than competent vehicle. In fact, these two vehicles are so similar they could easily have been separated at birth. Both are powered by twice-turbocharged V8s with roughly the same horsepower, both boast the Cayennes Sport Chrono package notwithstanding the same acceleration, and and both reach about equal lock-you-up-and-throw-away-the-key top speeds: 286 km/h for the Porsche, versus 291 for the Maserati.Theyre roughly the same size and though their interiors are vastly different, the cabins are equally luxurious. Hard to say anything bad about either, though if it matters to you, Porsche Cayennes are becoming as common as VWs these days. 2019 Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 S Handout / Mercedes-Benz You want a different kind of German muscle: Then you might want to consider AMGs version of the Mercedes GLE, the 63 S. Boasting 577 horsepower from its twin-turbo V8, the 63 S also undercuts both Porsche and Maserati with its $116,300 starting price. That said, whod have ever thought thered come a day when Mercedes-Benz would become the price-point competitor in the luxury segment. It shows: The interior isnt quite as nice, and the ride isnt quite as settled as the Cayenne or Levante. And while were being frank, the GLEs styling leaves me a little cold, exhibiting neither the passion of the Maserati nor the ruthless efficiency of the Porsche. Buy it for the horsepower or its booming exhaust if you must, but its not quite as sophisticated as either of the other two. (It’s worth noting the 63 S is still based on the bones of the

GMC’s 2020 Sierra 1500 gets a new diesel engine, plus other options
2020 GMC Sierra Denali CarbonPro Edition GMC spilled the details on its 2020 Sierra 1500 late May, noting the truck will offer such new features as a diesel engine and a camera view that can make a trailer “disappear.” The updated truck adds features to the all-new 2019 Sierra, which introduced the available six-function MultiPro tailgate. For 2020, the Sierra can be ordered with a 3.0-litre Duramax turbodiesel engine and ten-speed automatic. That transmission will also be standard or available on specific trim levels with the 5.3-litre V8 engine; it was previously mated only to the 6.2-litre V8. Other available features include a “transparent trailer view,” introduced on the 2019 Sierra HD, with a total of 15 camera views that combine to give a view of what’s behind the trailer, as if it isn’t there; adaptive cruise control that uses a windshield-mounted camera and can bring the truck to a complete stop; and stand-alone optional trailer tow mirrors. 2020 GMC Sierra Available Transparent Trailer Rear Camera View A new trailering app lets drivers create and edit trailer profiles on a mobile device. Depending on the trailer’s configuration, owners could remotely turn on an RV’s air conditioning or water heater, check the water and holding tank levels, or monitor on-board generator fuel supplies from a phone. The app will also send trailer maintenance reminders to the driver. The CarbonPro carbon-fibre pickup box, introduced for 2019, is available on specific models. The company said it increases durability with dent, scratch and corrosion resistance. While the Sierra is sold on both sides of the border, it’s a far more important truck for Canada than for the U.S., where truck buyers overwhelmingly prefer Chevy. In 2018, Americans bought 585,581 Chevrolet Silverados to 219,554 GMC Sierras; but in Canada, the Sierra outsold its Silverado sibling by more than 1,100

Former Volkswagen CEO, four other execs charged with fraud in Germany
Martin Winterkorn, former chairman of German car maker Volkswagen (VW).Tobias Schwarz German prosecutors have indicted former Volkswagen CEO Martin Winterkorn and four others on charges of fraud and unfair competition, saying he failed to prevent the manipulation of engine software that let Volkswagen cars cheat on diesel emission tests. Prosecutors in Braunschweig said Monday that Winterkorn knew about the deceptive software since at least May 25, 2014, despite his public statements he only became aware of the issue shortly before the scandal broke in September 2015. The prosecutors said the defendants – all of them top Volkswagen managers – were part of an ongoing deception that started in 2006. The company has admitted installing software that could tell when the cars were on test stands for emissions certification. When the cars went on to everyday driving, the emission controls were turned off, improving mileage and performance but emitting far more than the U.S. legal limit of nitrogen oxides, a class of pollutant that is harmful to health. The prosecutors say the defendants added a software update costing 23 million euros in 2014 in an attempt to cover up the true reason for the elevated pollution emissions during regular driving. Winterkorn and the others face from six months to 10 years imprisonment if convicted on charges of aggravated fraud involving serious losses. Bonuses collected due to sales based on the deception could be forfeited. Prosecutors said bonus that could be forfeited ranged from around 300,000 euros to 11 million euros (US$340,000 to US$12.45 million). Volkswagen has paid more than 27 billion euros in fines and settlements in the months and years since being caught. The company apologized and pleaded guilty to criminal charges in the United States, where two executives were sentenced to prison and several others charged, although they could not be
