Toyota re-recalls Corolla and Matrix cars over airbags

Toyota has expanded its Takata airbag recall to cover the 2008 Matrix and Corolla, as well as the 2008 to 2010 Lexus SC430.Toyota Toyota is re-recalling more than 55,000 cars for a problem with their airbags, even though the vehicles had already been recalled before, to have their Takata airbag inflators replaced.Exactly 55,399 vehicles Corolla cars from model years 2003 and 2004; and Matrix hatchbacks from model years 2005 through 2008 may be affected by the issue, which can cause the front passenger airbag to not inflate properly, increasing the risk of injury in a crash.Affected owners will be notified by the end of October, and dealers will replace the airbag units for free. This recall is about a new and different issue where the airbag may not deploy as designed in certain vehicles that received a remedy as part of previous Takata recalls, Toyota said in a

James Ruppert: with small cars, choose substance over style

It’s funny how some car buyers just want something that is funky-looking and on-trend, when really all they need is a hard-working hatchback. Here’s what Ryan said to me: “Hey James, I’m looking for a small and cheap motor to run between local schools for my sports coaching company. I’ve looked at a Smart car and a Toyota iQ. Could you recommend any?”  Well, the Smart is quite an old bit of kit now and the Toyota iQ is no longer with us but that doesn’t make them bad choices. The Smart is well proven and the Toyota is a Toyota, so it won’t break down. Both are small and neither is that cheap, although a tidy 2003 Fortwo Passion with 50k miles is around a grand and a proper warranted iQ from 2009 is £2500. That’s not too bad, but if you’re using a small car for work, it can turn out to be not that practical – especially a minimally booted Smart. That’s why an old-school shopping hatch is always going to be a better idea.  The Ford Ka won’t be around for that much longer, but I rather like them. I was surprised that a pre-Aston grille example from 2009 is just over £1000. The mileage was 100k, but it had service stamps and was at a dealer, so they had a responsibility if anything was awry. For that money, it would be a three-door 1.2 Zetec.  Ryan might find he wants a couple more doors, so let’s think Kia Picanto. They’re mostly privately owned and well looked after. Picantos have tiny wheels and do look a bit toy-town, but a 2004 1.1 SE with lots of MOT and a fresh service for £700 is pretty good going. It would do a spectacular job and keep Ryan running for a year without a worry, proper cheap motoring and high-50s economy.  At this point, Ryan came back to me. The Ka seemed to fit his criteria pretty closely and I had mentioned the Toyota Aygo in passing, but he was unaware of the badge engineering which also created the Citroën C1 and Peugeot 107. A 2008 1.0, for instance, is £20 road tax and, with 100,000 miles showing, costs £750. So that’s a contender. Ryan, though, had his head turned by a Volkswagen Up. More style over substance? I like them, but Ryan would struggle to get very much below £3000 and he would be dodging insurance write-offs to do it. But if he wants to Up his budget, then by all means do it.  New small cars are going out of fashion, but used ones will be around for some time to come yet. It’s the continuing beauty of buying used. What we almost bought this week Once we’d mastered the name and sampled the eager motor and kart-like handling, the Sporting won a place in our heart. This 1996 car with 36,000 miles, full history and one former keeper brings it all back. It’s just £2295. Best feature? The sporty red seatbelts. Tales from Ruppert’s garage The immediate follow-up to last week’s fat-pin-in-tyre crisis: the Michelin Fit2Go tyre checker said the pressure was dropping fast, and a tyre specialist condemned the rubber. Given that the car belongs to Miss Ruppert, it’s up to her to do the shopping around. She found a 205/55 R16 19W Michelin Energy Saver to match the rest for £76 fitted. At times like these, a good old-fashioned space saver would really help, and my daughter wasn’t keen on using a tin of tyre gunge. The garage, though, took the car in a day early.  Reader’s ride Skoda Fabia vRS: Here is part two of Nick’s inspiring tale, which began last week with his Peugeot 206 banger.  “My colleague’s granny bought a Skoda Fabia vRS diesel new in 2004 and then passed it on a couple of years back. It’s done 99,000 miles with full history but it isn’t perfect: the bushes need replacing, the fuel cap doesn’t clip shut, the radio maintains a poor grasp on a signal and the bonnet is sun-bleached. But I’m now stopping at the pumps once every seven days rather than every four. It cost me £700 with no increase on my insurance. I put a fresh MOT on the Peugeot 206 and sold it – for £700. I’d call that a free upgrade!” Readers’ questions Question: I’ve seen a oneowner, 2015 BMW i3 Range Extender with 77k miles for £12,950. It would be my first EV. Does it sound like a good buy? Don Shelby, Bristol Answer: The range extender version is no longer made so used ones are sought after. You can expect up to 180 miles of range from the car compared with 100 miles max from the regular i3. If the batteries have always been topped up and the extender never used, the 650cc motor occasionally cuts in to keep itself fresh. Its servicing is condition-based and should be recorded on the key fob. However, the motor was subject to recalls, so check they were actioned. All being well, it sounds good. John Evans Question: I’m planning a driving trip after October, but how will Brexit affect my EU driving entitlement? Simon Fisher, via email Answer: It’s all still a bit uncertain but there’s nothing like being prepared so get an international driving permit, find that old GB sticker in your garage and pack the car’s V5 along with your motor insurance green

Yes, now Pagani’s mulling over building an SUV

The 2019 Pagani Huayra BC RoadsterNicholas Maronese Pagani, the Italian maker of hand-crafted hypercars with psychotic levels of performance, is, yes, reportedly thinking about building an SUV. According to an interview with Horacio Pagani himself on the digital pages of AutoCar, its a topic which has been discussed a number of times with collectors. In other news, pigs have learned to fly and old Alfas have suddenly become reliable daily drivers. We kid we should have known this development was coming, of course. Porsche, with the Cayenne, arguably opened the floodgates on the idea of a sports-car maker building SUVs. Now, theres a whole market full of stilt-wearing all-wheel-drive rigs from the likes of Bentley and Lamborghini.Still, we shouldnt fault the man for listening to his customers. After all, if the outrageously wealthy are asking him for a Pagani SUV to match their Zonda and Huayra, he would be silly to say no. Projects such as these pave the way for future car development, often with cubic acres of dollar bills.Pagani goes on to say that an SUV from the company that bears his surname would likely have a price tag in the neighbourhood of 3 million Euros ($4.4 million). They would access the technology of Mercedes-Benz a logical statement given the relationship between the two companies and maybe use the big SUV platform. A Pagani SUV based on a G-Wagen and stuffed with a V12 might not be so bad after all. The next hypercar from Pagani, set to replace the spellcheck-vexing Huayra, is scheduled to appear in the calendar year 2022. At its outset, the car will deploy a familiar Mercedes-AMG V12 twin-turbo, eschewing hybrid technology until a later time. In fact, Pagani said in the Autocar interview that the mighty V12 will be homologated until 2026, which is great news for gearheads who enjoy a screaming exhaust note.A move to electrification is on the horizon, of course, as only the most tone-deaf automaker would refuse to recognize consumer trends. Pagani is possibly the least tone-deaf CEO on the planet, so it makes sense that future hypercars from the brand will have some electrons in their

VW recalling roughly 117,000 cars in Canada over a rollaway risk

2018 Volkswagen GolfHandout / Volkswagen Volkswagen is recalling roughly 117,000 cars in Canada and 679,000 vehicles in the U.S. to fix a problem that could let the cars roll away unexpectedly. The recall covers certain 2011 through 2018 Jettas; 2015 through 2019 GTIs; 2015, 2016, 2018 and 2019 Golfs; 2012 through 2019 Beetles and Beetle Convertibles; and 2017 through 2019 Golf SportWagens. All have automatic transmissions, manual hand brakes and keyless entry.VW says silicate can build up on a shift lever switch, allowing the key to be removed if the lever isnt in park. That could let the cars roll off unexpectedly.Dealers will add a switch and circuit board to fix the problem. World record burnout attempt may be ignored over lack of paperwork

A world record burnout attempt at Bandimere Speedway near Denver, Colorado could be going totally to waste, due to someone forgetting to file some paperwork.First of all, gathering 170 cars together to do a proper burnout is a feat within itself. Its pretty darn impressive, as can be clearly seen in video of the event. The problem with the attempt was the planning. While organizers did manage to get 170 cars to do a burnout at the same time (apparently more than the previous record of 126 cars in Australia) there was no adjudicator from Guinness World Records there to actually witness it, and there was no paperwork filled out with the record-keepers beforehand. So in the eyes of Guinness, this attempt may have never happened.According to an email sent to Motor1 from the Guinness adjudicators, the attempt was not confirmed, nor could the application for the record attempt be filed after the fact, even though retroactive applications for other records have been filed in the past at a cost of US$800.So, it seems like 340 tires were turned into smoke for no reason at all but to look kinda neat. Sorry, boys and girls. The question here is if the real world record even matters anymore. With the existence of the internet and video technology basically proving the stunt was done, does there really need to be a bunch of paperwork filled out and an actual witness to confirm it happened? We salute the horsepower junkies that did this, whether they get a room temperature stout at the end of the day or

Alfa Romeo recalling Stelvio, Giulia over optimistic fuel gauges

2018 Alfa Romeo Giulia QuadrifoglioDerek McNaughton / Driving Alfa Romeo is recalling almost new 22,000 Stelvio crossovers and Giulia sedans, including 935 in Canada, because the fuel gauges could indicate theres more gas tank in the tank than there really is.Model year 2018 and 2019 cars and trucks are affected, specifically more than 11,000 Giulia sedans and more than 10,000 Stelvio SUVs in the U.S. Fewer than 1,000 cars are affected in Canada.Affected vehicles may suddenly stall when they run out of gasoline unexpectedly, increasing the risk of a crash. Italian owners of the cars and trucks found this out firsthand, and its how Alfa Romeo first learned of the issue, in fact.Faulty software in the vehicles means the fuel gauge may display one or two notches higher than actual; the issue is much more likely to show up if the car is parked for more than 30 minutes on a steep hill with a fuel tank filled between a half and three-quarters.When parked that long at an incline of more than 10 percent, the software will read the fuel level, assume the tank has been refilled, and re-calibrate itself incorrectly.Affected vehicles will have new software installed starting September

Bugatti mulling over SUV, 500-km/h Chiron variant

The Bugatti Galibier 16C ConceptHandout / Bugatti Bugatti said a while ago an SUV wasn’t in the cards. But times, they are a-changing, with an interview with Volkswagen boss Stephen Winkelmann revealing the premium automakers got a crossover utility at the ready and may be planning to build an even faster Chiron.Automobile Magazine sat down with Winkelmann to discuss the future of the storied brand and its forthcoming projects, and apparently the prospect of an SUV joining the lineup is very real. The design is done. Some potential customers have seen it, and they liked it. One or two influential people up in Wolfsburg were complimentary about it, Winkelmann said of what could become Bugattis second product beside the Chiron. But at this point there is no budget and no decision. The decision to make an SUV instead of an all-electric hypercar comes from demand, and a lack of a high-performance, high-end luxury CUV. The refusal to consider an all-electric hypercar also comes from battery technology being relatively young not good enough for a Bugatti yet, Winkelmann says. The CUV will definitely have some sort of electrification, however. Most Bugatti models are ultra-exclusive, and the CUV will be no different, but the body count wont be as low as the Chirons. Winkelmann says were not talking 100 cars a year here, but 600 to 800.As for the Chiron itself, its not going anywhere soon, with Winkelmann saying it will be another five years before the finishing touches are put on the evolution of the vehicle. That evolution might encompass a 500-km/h version, as well as an open-topped variant though likely not in the same

Mercedes-Benz facing €1bn fine over emissions software

Mercedes-Benz parent company Daimler is facing a fine ranging from €800 million (£740m) to €1 billion (£925m) for diesel emission-related violations, according to German magazine Der Spiegel. Der Spiegel reports the German motor vehicle authority, the Kraftfahrt-Bundesamt, has discovered software deemed to be illegal under existing European Union law fitted to various Mercedes-Benz C-Class and E-Class diesel models, including the popular C220 CDI and E220 CDI. The software is claimed to allow diesel-powered C- and E-Class models to achieve lower NOx and CO2 emissions in controlled climatic conditions at pre-set speeds on a rolling road during testing than in practice on public roads. Der Spiegel says Daimler has been ordered to recall up to 280,000 vehicles. A fine of up to €5000 per vehicle is being considered by the Stuttgart public prosecutor, the German magazine claims. A spokesman for the Stuttgart prosecutor’s office said the investigation into possible diesel emission fraud by Daimler was continuing and would not be concluded before the end of the year.   Daimler has declined to comment while the investigation is ongoing. In June, the German motor vehicle authority ordered Daimler to recall 60,000 GLK diesels, bringing the total number of diesel vehicles recalled by the German car maker in relation to software irregularities to more than 760,000. Daimler also faces prosecution by US authorities. In 2016, the US Environmental Protection Agency asked its Mercedes-Benz division to explain high emissions levels in various diesel models. Prosecutors in Germany have enacted administrative orders to impose fines on Volkswagen, Audi and Porsche for diesel emission cheating. In May, the Stuttgart prosecutor fined Porsche €535m and supplier Bosch €90m. This came on the back of the Braunschweig prosecutor imposing a €1bn fine on Volkswagen and the Munich prosecutor fining Audi

Ford recalls 239 new SUVs in Canada over roll-away risk

2020 Ford Explorer STFord Ford is recalling some 239 brand-new SUVs in Canada because a missing part and a faulty setting could combine to pose a roll-away risk. The safety alert covers a total of about 14,000 model-year-2020 Ford Explorer and Lincoln Aviator trucks, most of them in the U.S. and most of them still on dealership lots, but Ford notes all affected vehicles are still safe to drive. The SUVs are simply missing the manual park release cover, meaning its now a lot easier for owners to accidentally pull the manual park release, which could result in the truck rolling away. One vehicle has already been damaged this way during transport, after rolling off a truck. No one or no other vehicles were hurt or damaged in the incident.Compounding the risk is the fact some vehicles instrument clusters may have been left in factory mode, which disables warning alerts and chimes and means the dashboard wont show which gear position is
