Ford Motor Company and McDonald’s USA will soon be giving vehicles a caffeine boost by using part of a familiar staple in the morning routine, coffee beans, in vehicle parts such as headlamp housing.Ford Cars and coffee? Its usually a gathering of car folks that takes place on the weekend, early in the morning. But that aint the kind of cars-meet-coffee crossover Fords researchers are interested in.The automaker is instead, believe it or not, teaming up with McDonalds to turn the restaurants coffee bean waste into car parts, to help reduce Fords carbon footprint.The parts are made of coffee chaff, which is the dried skin of the coffee beans that naturally falls off during the process of roasting them. Chaff is usually used for garden mulch, but through an innovative process, Ford thinks its able to turn them into reinforcing material for plastic.The chaff is heated under pressure in a low-oxygen environment, and mixed with other materials to create pellets that can be formed into car components. Headlight housings and other interior and underhood components could be made from the material. The bioplastic made from the chaff is up to 20 per cent lighter and uses 25 per cent less energy to mold. The heat properties of the chaff are also better than the components that Ford currently uses.A lighter car that uses less energy to build will help Ford reach its targeted CO2 emissions reductions, as well as better its fuel economy ratings.So next time you pull up to a cars and coffee event in your Mustang and somebody offers you a hot cup of joe, tell them youve already got one under the hood. California tuner loses US$3M in classic Porsche cars and parts in fire
A fire started by a spontaneously erupting Ford F-150 burned down a nearby warehouse full of millions of dollars of vintage Porsche parts and cars in California last week. The warehouse belonged to Benton Performance, a tuning shop specializing in vintage Porsches in Anaheim, California. According to Road Track, owner John Benton says he watched the fire grow on security footage, spreading from the 2016 Ford pickup to a diesel pickup which also exploded, sending flaming fuel onto a lumberyard next door and eventually igniting the warehouse.Inside, racks of Porsche racing seats went up in flames, along with stacks of highly flammable magnesium wheels, and boxes and crates of purposefully back-stocked parts including engine blocks, heads and more from 911s, 912s and 356s. The fire also took a museum-ready 912E and one of Benton’s personal cars — damages are estimated at over US$3 million in total. But in an interview with Road Track, Benton sounded almost as motivated by the fire as he did devastated. “The shop is open, but we’re a wounded beast,” Benton told the magazine. “You watch a Godzilla movie and he’s kicking everybody’s ass, but then he just gets totally fried — well that’s where we’re at right now.” “We’re trying to get back to the point where Godzilla emerges from the ocean again and just lays down the law.”The crew might be a bit cramped in the recently constricted working space, but Benton says they’ll continue to build and tune. Hopefully his insurers cut him a big fat cheque and Benton Performance gets resurrected better and stronger than ever.

Chevy is currently playing house with AEV to build the Colorado ZR2 Bison, another midsize truck with acres of off-road cred. Jeep and Ram have also introduced expansive (and expensive) catalogs of rugged kit for the Wrangler, Gladiator and their line of pickup trucks.Its the latter point that impacts the company bottom line, as the cost of these accessories can often be worked into the vehicles selling price. Rather than pay $1,495 for the bumper, a dealer would be more than glad to tack $20 a month onto your payment. This also has the effect of raising the trucks average transaction price, an investor-pleasing metric.Aftermarket gear is a huge business, estimated to be a multi-billion dollar industry with plenty of room for growth. Next week, the worlds leading aftermarket companies will descend on Las Vegas for the SEMA Show, an annual soire in which hundreds of vendors show and display their wares. With many car-maintenance issues, the best solution is to get to a mechanic rather than trying to figure it out yourselfGetty Toyota owners across the country are commiserating over a shared headache caused by a major delay in parts.Halifax driver Catrina Brown told the CBC, for example, that she’s been waiting for over 60 days for parts to arrive for her RAV4, which was damaged in a collision and brought to a repair center. “It’s seemingly incomprehensible to me that a massive corporation like that can’t get it together to find parts for their cars,” the CBC quotes Brown. “There’s been a total lack of communication or effort to be transparent. I’ve had to do all the work of calling and trying to contact people to find out what’s going on.”The issue at hand is what Toyota spokespersons refer to as a “planned systems transformation to provide an improved overall customer experience.” When CBC’s reporters followed up for clarification on what they “systems transformation” entailed, they were told simply that the issue would be “short-term.”But not short-term enough for some. The story cites other sources who say they’ve been waiting far too long for parts. One Cambridge, Ontario woman was told there was “nothing they can do to reimburse (her),” and that she would basically have to keep waiting for the weeks-delayed parts for her 2016 Scion FR-S. Meanwhile, her insurance stopped covering rental costs two weeks ago. Toyota Supra Twin TurboHandout Toyota announced mid-May it will be remanufacturing parts for the Mk3 and Mk4 Supra as part of its GR Heritage Parts Project. The announcement was made May 17 at the launch event of the 2020 Supra, which took place at the Toyota Megaweb showroom in Odaiba, Japan. Shigeki Tomoyama, head of Gazoo Racing, made the announcement; he personally has a Mk4 A80 Supra, which was on stage with him at the time of the announcement. Thanks to Japanese Nostalgic Car, the important parts of the speech were translated into English so we could excitedly tell you all about it. Tomoyama also spoke about the tectonic shift the car industry is moving towards in regards to electric vehicles, and stated there would always be a place for race cars. “All horses that were once a means of transportation have been replaced by cars, but racehorses remain. There are people all over the world who love horses,” he suggested. The challenge of Toyota Gazoo Racing is to make cars thoroughly interesting in the next 100 years.” He did not speculate about what parts would be available but suggested that enthusiasts will be satisfied. “We can not answer about specific parts at this time, but we will make every effort to meet the expectations of owners,” Tomoyama said. Trump delays imposing tariffs on auto imports and parts

The White House said Friday he is delaying for six months any decision to slap import taxes on foreign cars, a move that would hit Europe and Japan especially hard. Trump is hoping to use the threat of auto tariffs to pressure Japan and the European Union into making concessions in ongoing trade talks. “If agreements are not reached within 180 days, the president will determine whether and what further action needs to be taken,” White House press secretary Sarah Sanders said in a statement. The president has dusted off a rarely used weapon in the U.S. trade war arsenal – Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act of 1962 – to investigate whether auto imports are a threat to U.S. national security, justifying tariffs. The Commerce Department sent its recommendations on the issue to the White House in February. In a statement, the White House said that Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross has determined that imported vehicles and parts are a threat to national security. President Trump said he agreed, but decided to defer any action for 180 days and directed the U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer “to address the threatened impairment of national security” in negotiations. In the meantime, Ross will monitor imports and tell Trump of circumstances that “might indicate the need for further action.” The White House statement doesn’t mention tariffs, but clearly they are the prime option to reduce imports. In justifying action for national security reasons, the statement says the U.S. industrial base depends on American-owned auto companies to come up with technology to maintain U.S. military superiority. The Commerce Department found that because of rising imports of autos and parts over the past 30 years, the market share of U.S.-owned automakers has fallen. Sales revenue has dropped, causing a lag in research and development spending by U.S. automakers which is “weakening innovation and, accordingly, threatening to impair our national security,” the statement said. But the statistics used to justify the action are fuzzy and don’t match market share figures from the industry. In 2017, General Motors, Ford, Fiat Chrysler and Tesla combined had a 44.5 per cent share of U.S. auto sales, according to Autodata Corp. Those figures include vehicles produced in other countries. It’s possible that the Commerce Department didn’t include Fiat Chrysler, which is now legally headquartered in The Netherlands but has a huge research and development operation near Detroit. It had 12 per cent of U.S. auto sales in 2017. The Commerce figures also do not account for research by foreign automakers. Toyota, Hyundai-Kia, Subaru, Honda and others have significant research centres in the U.S. “The case remains clear — cars are not a national security threat,” the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers, an industry trade group, said in a statement. “We are deeply concerned that the administration continues to consider imposing auto tariffs. By boosting car prices across the board and driving up car repair and maintenance costs, tariffs are essentially a massive tax on consumers.” Trump used the national security justification last year to impose tariffs on imported steel and aluminum. One of the motivations was to coerce Canada and Mexico into agreeing to a rewrite of North American free trade pact. In fact, the Canadians and Mexicans did go along with a revamped regional trade deal that was to Trump’s liking. But the administration has so far refused to lift the taxes on their metals to the United States

Survival, the autonomous parts-distributing robot roaming around a Spanish Ford plantFord Robots have been at the center of auto manufacturing for ages, often handling tasks which would otherwise be too tough or time-consuming for humans. Some automakers have even been playing around with robotic exoskeletons, assisting workers in keeping their arms raised for hours at a time. Factory robots, then, are not uncommon. This one, however – ominously called “Survival” – is a bit different. Developed entirely in-house by Ford, it’s a run-around bot tasked with delivering spare parts and welding material to factory workers at a Ford body and stamping plant in Valencia, Spain. Here’s the rub: this thing learned itself how to navigate the building, and can figure out new routes if its chosen path is blocked or unavailable. Its designers programmed Survival to learn the whole floor, which means, when paired with a network of sensors, the robot doesn’t need external guides such as GPS. A quick video posted to the company’s YouTube page reveals a machine that looks not unlike a battered filing cabinet with a searchlight mounted on top of it. Painted a jaunty orange and lined with caution tape, the unit is shown zipping through the factory on its way to dutifully deliver items. Survival has 17 different slots for parts and is smart enough to allow access to only the slot designated for the delivery it is currently handling. It won’t allow a person who needs a rivet to take a ball-peen hammer, for instance, since it knows the worker at Station #2 only needs access to the rivets. This cuts down on erroneous deliveries and other headaches caused by humans not using stuff correctly, as is their wont.
