James Ruppert: how to pick up a bargain Beetle

So, farewell to the Volkswagen Beetle. Twice this year, I’ve been asked to give on the radio what is in effect an oral obituary for the long-serving model. The Beetle’s backstory is a fascinating one and it bears retelling, although not here. It isn’t a practical buy, but a style one. Its unaerodynamic blunt front eats into the mpg and the boot isn’t the biggest – but at least it isn’t another boring hatch.  Shall we take a peek at what the classic market is up to? Well, £4450 buys a fully operational 1971 1200 Beetle that’s apparently unrestored and used as a daily, which surprised me a bit. There are some Californian imports for similar money and projects at the £1500 mark, so if you fancy some work and rust, knock yourself out.  When it comes to the reborn Beetle, these are proper bangers now and presumably the £300 examples are worth more in bits. I found a 2002 1.6 petrol local to me with a couple of months’ MOT for that money and only a cracked windscreen and 175,000 miles on the debit sheet. Then a few miles more in the other direction was a 2001 2.0, which was blue with black wheels and a full year’s MOT for £500. Then there was a 2009 1.6 Luna with 90,000 miles and a full MOT at £1800. Not bad for a decade-old cared-for example.  The Beetle is all about showing off and, for £1500 upwards, there are a ton of cabriolets around that are perfect cruising buys. For example, there was a 2004 1.6 with reasonable miles and a private plate chucked in for £1500. Personally, I would respond more warmly to the subtle rumble of a 2.3 V5. No one else wants those, so there are tidy one-owner 2001 examples at £750. Dealer prices can be £2995, but they should be pretty mint and warranted.  Then there is the last-of-the-breed Beetle 2, which isn’t quite so lovable. The petrol 1.2 TSI starts at £5500, so a contemporary model at a reasonable price. I have a lot of time for a 1.6 Bluemotion, which does address the older cars’ fuel economy issues and deliver 65mpg, officially anyway. A 2013 one with over 90,000 miles is £5995. A bunch of special editions increases the choice and I like the idea of a Fender I can actually drive. I saw a 2013 2.0 TDI with 50,000 miles, a DSG gearbox and Fender logos. The sound system should be decent, it had a DAB radio and it was a two-owner car for £9999.  Certainly, the Beetle isn’t for everyone, but they are good value, and in the world of the me-too hatch, it is the curvy exception. Otherwise, buy a Golf or Polo. What we almost bought this week It was going so well – pretty little French hatchback in the right colour, full main dealer service history, a reasonable 75,000 miles on the clock and a recent new cambelt and water pump, all for just £890. And then the admission that the electric hood is playing up. Sadly, roof problems are the Pluriel’s Achilles heel. Moving on… Tales from Ruppert’s garage Volkswagen Golf, mileage – 55,725: It’s always good to know that aftermarket gadgets are actually working and have a real-world purpose. You might remember I have a Michelin Fit2Go tyre pressure checker. The posh one on the Baby Shark is resting at the garage at the moment – more on that next time. The Golf, though, uses a simpler version, but it rapidly zeroed in on the fact that the nearside rear tyre had a large tack in it. I’ve already sold a few of these to mates with lower-tech 1990s cars who reckon this could be a lifesaver and it is. So let’s get that tyre fixed as there’s no spacesaver these days. Should e-scooters stay on roads or sidewalks? Calgary, Edmonton pick opposite sides

The e-Scooter program is causing some concerns for motorists and pedestrians in Calgary on Monday, July 29, 2019.Darren Makowichuk / Calgary Herald As the e-scooter craze continues to grip the world, Calgarians have proven they are not immune to the novelty, racking up 300,000 rides since the 16-month pilot project started mid-July.The City of Edmonton, whose own year-long pilot project started last Friday, doesnt have the total number of rides so far but like in Calgary, Lime and Bird are the only two e-scooter vendors.The regulations in each city, however, are vastly different in one specific way: Calgary riders are allowed on sidewalks but prohibited on roads, whereas Edmonton riders are allowed on roads but prohibited on sidewalks.Neither city requires riders to wear helmets when operating the e-scooters and both are allowed in bike lanes. Both cities have capped the scooters speed at 20 km/h.There are currently 1,000 Lime scooters and 500 Bird scooters in Calgary and 200 Lime and 400 Bird scooters in Edmonton.Alberta Health Services said there have been no reported injuries from e-scooters in Edmonton since they were introduced on August 16 and 17. Calgary has seen 200 e-scooter related injuries since their introduction.Nathan Carswell, Calgarys shared mobility program manager, said there have been 185 calls made to the 311 line, and about 70 per cent of them are negative.Allowing sidewalk riding is probably our top complaint, he said. In saying that, its usually people who feel like a scooter sped by them without alerting them and then it evens out below that from people concerned about the speed to improperly parked scooters and general feedback. Azin Ghaffari / Postmedia A spokesman for the City of Edmonton said its decision to allow scooters on roadways with a maximum speed limit of 50 km/h followed a review of collision data and e-scooter projects in other cities.They ensure people with scooters could still have easy access around Edmonton, the province of Alberta mandated e-scooters could be on roads provided they had a headlamp, tail lamp, a rear reflector, a working handbrake and a kickstand, a spokesman said, adding 80 to 90 per cent of Edmontons roads have a speed limit up to 50 km/h.The City of Calgary worked with existing bylaws to expedite the scooter rollout process, Carswell said, whereas Edmonton took its time to create the bylaws that will govern e-scooter use in that city.Im not trying to say one is doing it right and the other is not, I think thats the beauty of having these controlled pilots is that each citys approaching it how they feel most comfortable, he said. We can look at whats worked in Edmonton and Calgary and whats not and work with the province in the long run to regulate and ensure these devices are considered as part of a new transportation option and done the right way.When the snow flies in Calgary, or sometime around the first of November, both companies will be taking the scooters to their local warehouses until weather improves in the spring to bring them back.Carswell said its during this off-season that the city will look at how the project is going, whats working and what could be improved.The purpose of the pilot is to make some tweaks and monitor the project well look at what people are saying, what kind of ability do we have with the companies to curb this a little better, he said. Waymo gets permission to pick up California passengers with autonomous cars

Autonomous tech company Waymo has been given the go-ahead to begin picking up actual human passengers in California with its self-driving cars. But before you go booking a flight to L.A. to try the next big thing, know that there’s a caveat: the state’s Autonomous Vehicle Passenger Service pilot program only permits Waymo employees and guests to use the self-driving taxis. TechCrunch confirmed the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) gavethe permit to the Alphabet-powered company, granting its employees and their lucky friends and fam to try out the vehicles (limited to the Chrysler Pacifica at the moment, but soon to include the Jaguar I-PACE) within a predetermined area of South Bay near L.A., including the neighbourhoods of Palo Alto, Los Altos Hills, Los Altos, Mountain View and Sunnyvale. “The CPUC allows us to participate in their pilot program, giving Waymo employees the ability to hail our vehicles and bring guests on rides within our South Bay territory,” a Waymo spokesperson told TechCrunch. “This is the next step in our path to eventually expand and offer more Californians opportunities to access our self-driving technology, just as we have gradually done with Waymo One in Metro Phoenix.”Quick refresher: Waymo One was a similar pilot project that launched late last year, offering free autonomous rides to a couple hundred project participants in a one-hundred-mile radius around Phoenix.Waymo is also contractually obligated to keep a human safety driver behind the wheel, both in Phoenix and California, and to offer the service for free.
