Meanwhile, in Florida…A driver who parked on a stranger’s lawn and plugged his Tesla into an electrical outlet overnight without permission is being let off the hook by the friendly homeowner. It’s bad enough to park on someone’s lawn, but to steal their power, too? That takes balls, or a lack of brain cells, or both. Florida TV station WPBF 25 interviewed Phil Fraumeni, whose lawn was used as a temporary parking lot/charging station by the white Model 3. And lucky for the entitled driver, Fraumeni seems to be a delightful, neighbourly and quite forgiving individual. The Lake Worth man was woken up in the morning by his lawn guy who asked him to move his car parked on the grass near the sidewalk so he could mow. But Fraumeni’s car was in the garage, and he didn’t know anyone who owned a white Model 3 besides. So, after sending a picture to his wife and having her briefly think it was a gift for her, Fraumeni called the police, believing the car may have been stolen. It wasn’t, though, and soon a young man and woman showed up and explained that they’d run out of juice in the neighbourhood while visiting a friend and taken it upon themselves to leave the car topping up on the lawn from midnight the night before. The police explained to the driver that this was, in fact, not cool, dude. Being the gem that he apparently is, Fraumeni didn’t press charges or even ask the couple to pay for the power they’d stolen. So, free charging at Fraumeni’s place, we guess. Pass it on.

Audi SQ7 revamped with 429bhp V8 diesel power
Audi has launched an updated version of the range-topping SQ7 SUV, featuring a 429bhp turbocharged V8 diesel engine. The seven-seat Range Rover Sport rival, which will go on sale in the UK next month, features the recent facelift seen on the rest of the Q7 range, with the addition of several S-specific details. They include a revamped grille, aluminium mirror details, quad chrome exhaust pipes and 21-inch cast aluminium wheels. The 4.0-litre biturbo V8 diesel engine is the same featured in the recently revealed SQ8, and offers 664lb ft of torque, a 0-62mph time of 4.8secs and a limited top speed of 155mph. As in the SQ8, the diesel engine is boosted by a 48-volt mild hybrid Electrically Powered Compressor (EPC) that aids the two turbochargers, improving torque under acceleration at low speeds. The powertrain of the sport SUV is driven through an eight-speed tiptronic transmission, and the SUV features Audi’s quattro all-wheel-drive system. Adaptive sport air suspension is fitted as standard, while the SQ7 also features progressive steering to improve handling. There are 400mm brake discs at the front, with 370mm discs at the rear. The callipers are finished in black, although they are optionally available in red. The interior of the SQ7 features bespoke leather sports seats with integrated head restraints, and Audi’s MMI navigation plus system. The SQ7 will be offered in a Vorsprung edition, which adds all-wheel steering to further boost handling. It also features 22-inch wheels, and seats fitted with climate control and a massage function. The SQ7 will go on sale in the UK in August, with prices expected to start from around

Porsche Taycan EV power numbers appear
Porsche TaycanPorsche The segment of luxurious and rapid all-electric sedans is set to grow later this year when Porsche launches the Taycan. Set to be presented in September, it will go on sale at the end of this year and compete against the likes of Tesla Model S. Now, thanks to some sleuthing across the pond, we have a clearer idea just how much power this executive express might produce.First reported by UK outlet Car, who hitched a ride out of Porsches Weissach test centre in a preproduction Taycan, the so-called Turbo model will potentially shovel out 215 bhp from the motor on its front axle and 402 bhp from the powerplant astern. Simply adding those numbers together will not necessarily provide peak output, thanks to a myriad of EV math that makes your authors head spin. Suffice it to say the total will be more than adequate. As for torque, the UK mag reports the top-dog Taycan will reliably make 649 lb.-ft. of twist, with a full 738 lb.-ft. on tap courtesy of something referred to as an overboost window. It is fervently hoped that this overboost will be accessed by a big red button labelled Go Baby Go but that doesnt seem in keeping with Porsches design ethos. A control like that is more likely to be found in some Hellcat variant (thats a free idea for Dodge if they want it).For comparison, the psychotic Tesla Model S P100D has been dynoed by private individuals to the tune of 588 horsepower and 920 lb-ft of torque at the wheels when its systems are set squarely in Ludicrous+ mode. Official specs are hard to come by given the companys notorious rep for secrecy and a constant barrage of updates (over-the-air and otherwise) that are constantly hurled at the machine. At the final Formula E race of this season, Porsche deployed one of their works drivers to fling a Taycan around the New York circuit. In promo material for that event, the company boasts 600PS worth of power, equivalent to roughly 591 horsepower.Across the globe, Porsche says there are already more than 20,000 serious prospective buyers who have made a down payment. Pricing, trims, and all those other details should appear closer to its

BMW’s secret M5 wagon mule hides McLaren F1 power
The McLaren F1 set the world on fire when it came out, boasting incredible performance specs and offering no compromises, not even on driving position. The star of the show is undoubtedly the engine, commissioned by McLaren from BMW, who the racing firm knew would take the projects details to the nth degree.Of course, the engine would have to be tested before being given to the supercar manufacturer, but BMW didnt really have a mid-engined car that it could use for the application, save for the classic M1.Enter the E34 M5 Wagon, an extremely unlikely donor for the 6.1-litre V12 but. nevertheless, the car that would be the mule used to develop this insane engine. The existence of the wagon was revealed in talks with David Clark, former director of McLaren road and race car programs from 1994 through 1998, on Chris Harris Collecting Cars podcast; the vehicles otherwise remained a total mystery until now. Clark says hes driven the car, and that its an outrageous thing. It isnt hard to see why. In the McLaren F1, the 627-horsepower engine helped the carbon-fibre-bodied supercar reach 240.1 miles per hour (386 km/h), which is still the current record for a naturally aspirated road car. Of course, the car was built for racing, in which it achieved great success, even scoring an outright victory at Le Mans in 1995.While 627 horsepower doesnt seem like much these days, in 1995 it was more than double the 311 horsepower the M5 would have made stock, making for a wild ride,

GM truck power brake probe turns into recall
2017 GMC Sierra HDGMC An investigation into deteriorating power braking systems in newer GM trucks and SUVs has turned into a recall affecting over 300,000 vehicles in Canada.More than 150,000 similar trucks are also affected by a second, unrelated recent recall regarding a fire risk posed by a rear window defroster. The power brake recall covers 300,655 vehicles, including model year 2015 through 2017 Cadillac Escalades and Escalade ESVs; Chevrolet Suburbans and Tahoes; GMC Yukons and Yukon XLs; and model year 2014 through 2017 Chevrolet Silverados and GMC Sierras. In some of these vehicles, the vacuum output assisting the power brakes may begin to fall off, weakening the power brake assist and resulting a harder brake pedal and longer stopping distances. This extra effort required to stop could increase the risk of a collision.General Motors is still working on a fix for affected trucks and SUVs.A second unrelated recall also announced early July covers some 159,240 trucks, specifically model year 2014 through 2018 Chevrolet Silverados and GMC Sierras; and 2014 through 2019 Silverado and Sierra HD heavy-duties.On vehicles from those years equipped with a power sliding rear window, the rear window defroster circuit could overheat, leading to smoke, melting parts or possibly a fire.General Motors is also still working on a fix for that issue, but dealers can remove the rear defroster fuse as a

BMW, Chevrolet and Kia models top their segments in 2019 J.D. Power study
2020 Kia Forte GT The strange trio of BMW, Chevrolet and Kia took home most of the hardware in this years annual J.D. Power Initial Quality Study awards, with American and Korean brands generally making quite the sweep. The J.D. Power quality ratings and awards are based on feedback from more than 75,000 verified vehicle owners who have owned or leased their new rig for a minimum of 90 days. This rating focuses on problems experienced by these verified owners and has, over the years, been a good predictor of long-term durability.Rankings are easy to decipher: the fewer the problems, the better the score. Some folks rag on this award saying that 90 day-old cars are supposed to be trouble-free. However, anyone whos bought or leased a new car only to have it spend days and weeks in the shop know thats not always what happens. This year, there were 22 segment award recipients, listed alphabetically here by J.D. Power. Would it surprise you to learn that over one-third of them are brands from the Detroit Three automakers? Its true. The Ford Fusion, for example, continues to garner accolades despite currently residing in deaths nursery. It tied with the Chevy Malibu to rank highest in the midsize car segment. Youll notice the Honda Accord and Toyota Camry are nowhere to be found. The large-and-in-charge full-size SUVs from General Motors also took home awards in their respective categories, with the Chevy Tahoe and Cadillac Escalade being singled out by J.D. Power for IQS greatness. Lexus GX? Mercedes G-Wagen? Nope. However, Lexus did appear as winner in the midsize premium SUV class, expressive face and all.In addition, more than a quarter of the segment award winners were cars from Korean brands. Hyundais popular Sante Fe earned a gold sticker for initial quality in midsize SUVs, boding well for the utility given it is newly packed with gee-whiz tech such as advanced safety systems.Kias Sedona, Forte, Rio and Sportage were all champs in their respective classes. Toss in a win by Genesis for top premium compact car with its G70 and the Koreans certainly have something to boast

Multiple classic cars stolen on Hot Rod Power Tour road trip
The Hot Rod Power Tour is an amazing event put on by Hot Rod Magazine that sees enthusiasts from all over the United States – and even Canada – take part in a seven-day road trip across America, stopping at race tracks and car shows along the way. For the participants, it can be an awesome week of cruising with hundreds of other like-minded modified classic car nuts. But unfortunately, on this year’s Tour, there have been an unlucky few who have had their trips ruined by car thieves. One of the victims, the owner of a modified 1984 Monte Carlo, couldn’t believe that it was actually happening: “I thought it was a joke. Like, I really thought it was a joke,” Garrett Reed told the Charlotte Observer. “I didn’t get to make any memories in my car. Reed has been working on his car for the past nine months, and says he’s put countless hours into it; he also said it’s worth over $50,000. The Monte Carlo was stolen outside of the hotel parking lot in University City where he was staying. Another victim also had his truck stolen from the lot of his hotel, the Drury Inn. Roger and Debbie Bentley drove in from Dayton, Tennessee for the tour in their 1994 Chevy Silverado. “I was going to keep it and use it every year for the Power Tour. It was that nice of a truck and that much of a joy to drive,” Roger Bentley said. “I’m holding out hope that they’ll find it. The vehicles are insured, but that doesn’t reimburse the owners for the blood, sweat and tears that went into these highly customized and personalized builds. A Facebook group has been started for those that have had their vehicle stolen from the Hot Rod Power

Cadillac’s new CT4-V and CT5-V are down on power, but up on everything else
The 2020 Cadillac CT4-VGraeme Fletcher / Driving.ca Detroit, MICHIGAN—Seldom are new cars kept a total secret until the moment the wrap is pulled—a key tidbit always seems to leak out. But when it comes to these models, Cadillac managed to keep everything secret other than the fact the two replace the ATS-V and CTS-V. The new “dynamic” duo represent the next phase of the brand’s V-Series, which is celebrating 15 years of making go-faster models, some of which are approaching legendary status. The launch of the next-gen V-Series puts the CT4-V and CT5-V along side the CT6-V. Both the newbies get the V-Series blacked-out grille, distinctive headlight treatments, quad tail pipes and some very nice interiors with supportive seats and the latest in-car technologies. Outwardly, the two look very good—mean, but in a conservatively purposeful way. First impressions said sleeper. While the V legend has rapidly become the stuff of overlooked lore, the two new models come up a little shy in terms of outright performance. The CT4-V and its 2.7-litre turbocharged in-line four pushes 320 horsepower and 369 foot-pounds of torque at 1,800 rpm through a 10-speed automatic transmission and the rear wheels (or, as an option, all four wheels). However, compared to the 464 hp produced by the ATS-V it replaces, it is a tad shy. The good news is it sits on the stiffer Alpha platform and earns Magnetic Ride Control 4.0 (on RWD) or ZF MVS passive dampers (on AWD). Regardless, the suspension, says Cadillac, promises precise handling and a steering feel that’s second to none. It also gets monster Brembo brakes and sticky P255/55R18 tires. It will, in short, wow the driver. The CT5-V ups the ante and uses an expanded version of the Alpha platform and a larger 3.0-litre turbocharged V6 that makes 355 hp and 400 lb.-ft. of torque at 2,400 rpm. It, too, works with a 10-speed automatic and drives the rear or, as an option, all four wheels. Both drivetrains work with an electronic limited-slip rear differential and P245/40R19 Michelin Pilot tires. On the surface it looks good, but given this is a car trying to fill the tires of the CTS-V and its 640 hp and 630 lb.-ft. of torque it, too, comes off looking rather meek. Many pundits had predicted a detuned version of the CT6-V’s 4.2-litre twin-turbo V8 engine — it delivers 550 horsepower and 627 lb.-ft. of torque. While it is true that, with new models, you launch at a starting point and build to a thumping crescendo, outwardly the next-gen V-Series models seem to have taken a step backward. Perhaps this is just the launch phase and the CT4-V will inherit a boosted version of the V6, and the CT5-V will get a derivative of the 4.2-litre V8. Yes, ever-tightening emission regulations and fuel economy requirements are killing the fun, but to this extent? Elsewhere, Cadillac’s Super Cruise hands-free driver assistance system feature eases the chore of highway driving and is available for use on 208,000 kilometres of highway in both Canada and the U.S. It is an option on both new V-Series models. The 2020 Cadillac CT5-V Graeme Fletcher / Driving.ca At the reveal, Cadillac said this was just the beginning,” which opens the door to V-Series versions of, perhaps, the XT4 and XT5 — the thought of an Escalade-V is a little to farfetched even for devout Cadillac fans! The CT4-V and CT5-V sedans will hit dealer showrooms early next year. And while pricing was not announced, Cadillac did say these will be the most affordable V-Series cars
