Hyundai Nexo sets hydrogen fuel-cell long-distance record

Within the category of zero-emissions options, the hydrogen fuel cell is constantly being eclipsed by electric power. But Hyundai at least thinks it’s worth some attention.  The South Korean company’s Nexo SUV recently drove 484 miles (779 km) across France, setting a new world record for the longest distance traveled in a hydrogen-powered vehicle on a single tank. Hyundai chose Bertrand Piccard – Swiss psychiatrist, balloonist and president of the environmental foundation Solar Impulse – to take the wheel of the Nexo. As a champion of zero-emissions travel, Piccard has already circumnavigated the globe in a hot air balloon and a solar-powered plane.  “With this adventure, we have proven that with clean technologies, we no longer need revolutionary experimental prototypes to break records,” Piccard said. “Everyone can now do it with standard zero-emission vehicles. A new era in performance is beginning, for the benefit of environmental protection.”The drive took Piccard – along with some famous passengers including government officials and European royalty like H.S.H. Prince Albert II of Monaco and the Grand Duke Henri of Luxembourg – along a tour of Northeastern France, allegedly purifying about as much air as 23 adults breathe in a day and keeping the approximately 111.2 kg of carbon dioxide a gas-powered vehicle would’ve emitted over that distance out of the atmosphere. The Hyundai Nexo also made news earlier this year for its stellar performance in the IIHS crash tests, where it not only didn’t erupt into a fiery ball, but also scored a Top Safety Pick+ award on top of multiple “Good” and “Acceptable” ratings for its safety setups.LISTEN: Electric vehicle clubs have been around for decades, and up until just recently their memberships consisted of backyard tinkerers converting gas-powered vehicles to electric vehicles. Now that most global automakers are producing EVs, where does that leave these clubs? In this week’s episode of Plugged In we talk with Bruce Stout of the Vancouver Electric Vehicle Association about that and much more. New record for EV registrations in September

New record for EV registrations in September Pure electric sales smashed the previous sales record September was a record month for the electric car market, with more than 7,700 pure-electric models registered. Combined with more than 5,000 plug-in hybrid registrations, the total electric vehicle figure for September 2019 was almost 12,900 units. The latest figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders show significant growth for the EV market. Pure-electric registrations rose 236% compared to September 2018, and even PHEVs – recently in decline – saw a 23% increase. This is against the backdrop of an overall market that grew 1.3% The pure-electric sales record is beaten by some considerable margin. The previous record for a single month’s pure-EV registrations was in March 2019, with 3,917 units. September 2019’s 7,704 registrations smashes that record. To put it into context, only four months total EV sales – pure-electric and PHEV combined – have topped September 2019’s pure EV numbers. Pure-electric market share for September finished at 2.2%, and 3.8% for EVs and PHEVs combined. It’s the joint third highest market share in the UK, impressive considering it fell in September. September and March are traditionally strong months for the car market as a whole as these are the times when the new registration plates arrive. In March for example, the total EV registrations of almost 8,900 was one of the highest on record, though considering the strong performance of the rest of the market, it only made up 1.9% of total sales. PHEVs saw a good performance considering much of the year has been a struggle for the sector. March to July 2019 saw continuous decline compared to 2018, and August only saw 1.8% growth. September’s figure of 5,179 units made up 85% growth compared to last year’s sales. September’s figures mean that we are now comfortably ahead of the same stage last year. Jan-Sept 2018 had 44,688 electric vehicles registered – 11,270 EVs and 33,418 PHEVs. New electric vehicle registrations to the end of September 2019 have seen 48,056 models registered – 25,072 of them pure-electric and 22,984 PHEVs. It means the UK is 7.5% ahead of where it was at the same stage last year. The impressive sales look to have come about due to a combination of factors. Increased choice for customers is coming on-line, with new models from the likes of Mercedes and Tesla adding to registration figures. On top of that, increased supply of newer models from Audi and Kia means more customers are registering their cars. PHEVs seem to be lifted by a similar increase in options. Where many manufacturers had sold out of previous generation PHEVs, the likes of VW and BMW have brought out new versions in popular sectors – particularly valuable to fleet buyers – which has made a greater number of models available.

MG ZS EV gets extended discount offer following record sales

MG has extended its attractive discount on its ZS EV after it recieved 2000 orders in the first two months of going on sale. The offer, which will be available to the brand’s next 1000 UK customers, will continue to see MG match the government’s £3500 plug-in car grant on the top-spec Executive model, bringing its list price down to £23,495. The entry-level ZS EV Excite will get a £3000 discount, which when paired with the government grant, brings the price down to £21,995. According to data supplied by the SMMT, MG sold 1078 units in total in June 2019, highlighting the ZS’s initial sales figures as a significant surge in demand. While it took longer for the ZS EV to reach 2000 sales, it is hoped the extended discount will continue momentum for the affordable EV. “Since the official launch of the ZS EV in July, MG dealerships across the country have reported unprecedented demand from customers eager to get behind the wheel,” Daniel Gregorious, MG UK’s Head of Sales Marketing, said. “Our mission at MG is to make high-tech, zero-emissions cars available to all, and we are well on our way.” Once the next 1000 examples have been sold, the ZS EV will be available from £24,995, including the government grant. Although largely unrivalled in its position as a value electric compact SUV, the ZS EV represents a much more affordable alternative to the Kia e-Niro, which starts from £32,995 after grant.  The ZS EV’s chief rival, Hyundai’s Kona Electric, is priced slightly higher at £27,250, but is currently off-sale in the UK, with prospective buyers encouraged to join a waiting list. Like Hyundai and Kia, MG is applying a seven-year warranty to all ZS models sold in the UK.  The discounted price puts the ZS EV among the cheapest electric cars available in the UK. The ageing Citroen C-Zero is the only mainstream EV available for less, at £17,020 including the grant.  The ZS EV was first revealed at the Guangzhou motor show in China last year, and will be sold alongside the existing petrol versions of the ZS. The UK-bound ZS EV makes use of a front-mounted electric motor, producing 141bhp and 260lb ft. The car’s water-cooled 44.5kWh lithium ion battery is good for a 163-mile range on the WLTP test cycle, and is capable of rapid charging from flat to around 80% capacity in half an hour.  Styling changes over the conventionally fuelled model are minimal, and limited to the integration of a charging point in its blanked off grille, and the addition of a newly designed set of 17in alloy wheels. Inside, standard equipment includes an 8in touchscreen, satnav, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, Bluetooth and DAB radio. The ZS prioritises interior space and practicality, with a split-level boot and several hidden storage areas maximising load capacity.  “We’re delighted to be entering the electric car market at such an exciting time,” said Daniel Gregorious, MG’s head of sales and marketing. “With MG’s trademark value-for-money approach, we’re confident that we can help more and more new car buyers to go electric.” UK sales of the EV weren’t confirmed at its global debut last year, but now come as part of the steady growth of the MG brand worldwide and its transition to being a maker of SUVs.  MG is enjoying sales success in China, under the ownership of SAIC. Last year, it sold 134,786 cars, a significant increase over the 80,389 sold in 2016. That success accelerated in 2018; MG had already surpassed its 2017 total by the end of August, having sold 179,109 cars.  China is the world’s largest market for electric cars, and ranges in excess of 250 miles are now the norm there, rather than the exception. The ZS EV first made its debut alongside the new HS SUV, which is understood to be lined up to replace the GS in MG’s UK range later this

World record for largest parade of Mustangs broken in — Belgium!?

A gathering of more than 1,300 Ford Mustangs in Belgium, there to set a parade recordFord A record-breaking 1,326 Ford Mustangs took part in the worlds largest parade of Pony cars September 7, but if that number isnt bewildering enough for you, theres a bit of a huh? Wow! in the where it was set Belgium!Ford itself helped coordinate the parade with the cars no more than 20 metres apart at its Lommel Proving Ground in Belgium. As you might expect with so many Stangs, every generation of the model was well-represented, and likely every year. Why Belgium? European sales of the American icon are on the rise, and Belgium in particular is the cars biggest market there. The prior record just broken wasnt set in the U.S. either, oddly enough; it was a 960-car Mustang parade pulled off in Toluca, Mexico also with Fords assistance in December

EVs take record market share in August

EVs take record market share in August SMMT figures show new records for both pure EVs and overall EV market August’s electric vehicle registrations have set a new record, with plug-in models making up 4.4% of the UK’s market share, and pure-electric models making up 3.4% of registrations. The latest set of figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) show that more than 3,000 pure-electric models and over 900 plug-in hybrid cars were registered in August. That’s ahead of the new registration plate that arrived on 1st September, and includes pre-registered models rather than outright sales. With more than 4,000 electric vehicles registered in the month, the plug-in car market performed well as the overall UK car market fell. Registration figures ended at -1.6% for August compared to the previous year. That contrasts with the 377.5% increase for pure-EVs over last year’s monthly total, more than offsetting PHEV’s performance of -71.8% in August. As such, pure-electric models took a 3.4% market share for the month, and PHEVs made up 1% of new registrations in August. Those figures are almost exactly mirrored from 2018’s results, where more than 3,200 PHEVs were registered at a market share of 3.4%, and pure-EV registrations were just over 650 units, at 0.7% market share. The latest figures reinforce the overall trends for2019 to date. The UK car market continues to fall, with uncertainty over Brexit often cited by industry leaders. PHEV registrations are also falling, with a few factors likely influencing the powertrain’s decline. Improved pure-EV range, the removal of the Plug-in Car Grant for PHEVs, and outright stock available to customers are all likely playing a part. For the year to the end of August, pure-EV and PHEV registrations are effectively tied. This has seen a significant increase in pure-EV registrations over PHEVs in recent months, with the first eight months of the year seeing 17,393 and 17,594 units registered for EVs and PHEVs respectively. Combined, they make up 2.3% of the market share for 2019 to the end of August.

Volkswagen ID R establishes record on Chinese hillclimb

The record-breaking 671bhp Volkswagen ID R electric prototype has set the first official record of 7mins 38.585secs on the Tianmen Shan Big Gate Road in China – with the firm challenging other EV makers to try and beat it. Driven by Romain Dumas, already set new outright or electric records at Pikes Peak, the Nurburgring and Goodwood. To showcase the potential of its ID electric technology in China – the world’s largest EV market – Volkswagen staged an event on the 6.776-mile, 99-turn road, which snakes up Tianmen Mountain near Zhangjiajie in China’s Hunan Province. Due to time constraints, Dumas had limited running on the course, with just four test runs in the ID R on two practice days before the record attempt, and two more ahead of his final run today (Monday). Having completed the course in aorund 8mins 30secs on Sunday, Dumas admitted he was surprised by his eventual time. “The track improved for the final run, because some damp bits dried up, and we made some changes to the car that allowed me to push,” he said. “I took a few more risks, and we improved a lot. I was sweating a lot in the last run.” Dumas described the course as “completely crazy”, with the team’s biggest problem finding grip on the bumpy road surface, which the ID R’s suspension had not been originally designed to cope with. While this was the first officially timed run up the hill, a number of machines have tackled it in anger in the past. The previous unofficial hill record – on a marginally longer course – was set by Land Rover last year using a 567bhp Range Rover Sport SVR. Driven by Jaguar Formula E reserve driver Ho-Pin Tung, it completed the course in 9min 51 secs. Stephan Wollenstein, VW’s Chinese boss, said the event was a milestone for the firm in the Chinese market, and issued a challenge to other manufacturers. “Now the race is really on,” he said. “We invite anyone who thinks they can build an electric car that can go quicker to come and challenge us.” He added: “If anyone goes below 7mins 30secs, we’ll get a new car and come here again.” Volkswagen will unveil the ID 3, its first production model based on the VW Group’s bespoke electric MEB platform, at the Frankfurt motor show. The firm will launch two locally produced ID models in China next year, with the market a key part of its goal to sell one million BEVs per year by

The ‘Fastest Woman on Four Wheels’ dies in crash while attempting to break record

Jessi Combs, race car driver and TV personality, died while trying to break a land speed record August 27, 2019 in the Alvord Desert in Oregon.Frederick Brown / Getty Jessi Combs was nicknamed the fastest woman on four wheels. She died August 27 in Oregon in a jet-powered car trying to become faster. The 36-year-old earned her nickname by breaking records. In 2013, she broke a 48-year-old mark when she reached 393 mph (632 km/h) in her North American Eagle Supersonic Speed Challenger. She set another record in 2016 when she drove nearly 478 mph (769 km/h), her fastest speed, in the same desert where her life ended.Combs had attempted to beat her own speed before. In a September Instagram post, Combs said she reached a new top speed of 483 mph (777 km/h). Unfortunately a piece of debris was sucked into the turbine intake. There is minimal damage, though game over for now, she captioned a picture of herself smiling in aviator glasses. Looking forward to the next attempt of ludicrous speed.Tuesdays attempt resulted in a 911 call to the Harney County Sheriffs Office around 4 p.m., according to KTVZ in Oregon. The sheriffs office and the Bureau of Land Management are investigating the crash.Terry Madden, a member of Combs crew, confirmed her death in an Instagram post late August, stating he was the first one there. He urged people to not give to any false donation pages that might pop up.She was the most amazing spirit that that I have ever or will ever know, he wrote in the post. Madden said he and Combs family are working on a documentary that Combs wanted to complete and that a foundation in her honor will help her legacy live on.Combs, who self-described as a stereotype breaker and a real deal across her social platforms, was also an established metal fabricator and welder. She received a degree in custom automotive fabrication from WyoTech and established a line of welding gear for women. She displayed her various sets of expertise on TV, appearing on shows such as Jay Leno’s Garage and hosting The List: 1001 Car Things to Do Before You Die and MythBusters. Combs was also known for her time on television, as a guest fabricator on Overhaulin’, as a co-host of Xtreme 4×4 and All Girls Garage, among other things. As news of her death broke Wednesday, Combs fans and former colleagues eulogized her on Twitter. Kari Byron, who previously starred with Combs on MythBusters, tagged their old show and remembered Combs for always pushing limits.Former MythBusters co-host Adam Savage agreed. He lauded Combs for her presence on the show and passion for encouraging others.Im so so sad, Jessi Combs has been killed in a crash, Savage wrote on Twitter. She was a brilliant to(p)-notch builder, engineer, driver, fabricator, and science communicator, strove everyday to encourage others by her prodigious example. She was also a colleague, and we are lesser for her absence. In one of her last social media posts, Combs is staring at the back of a jet car, overlooking the desert as her team attends to the machine. It may seem a little crazy to walk directly into the line of fire, she wrote. Formula 1 reveals record 22-race calendar for 2020

Formula 1 bosses have revealed a draft calendar for 2020, with the addition of events in the Netherlands and Vietnam resulting in a record 22 races. With several long-running events, including Britain, Spain and Australia, recently agreeing to new contracts the new events have resulted in the largest-ever F1 calendar. There were 21 races in both 2016 and 2018. The calendar still has to approved by the FIA World Motor Sport Council in October. The Australian Grand Prix retains its traditional season-opening slot on 15 March, while Abu Dhabi continues to host the finale on 29 November. Vietnam will become the 34th country to host a world championship event on 5 April, with a race staged on a street circuit in the capital city of Hanoi. The Dutch Grand Prix, held at the historic Zandvoort track, will return to the calendar after 35 years on 3 May, in part because of the huge popularity of Dutchman Max Verstappen. The British Grand Prix at Silverstone will be held on 19 July. As expected the calendar doesn’t include the German Grand Prix, which has struggled financially in recent years. The Italian Grand Prix is scheduled for 6 September, although race organisers and F1 chiefs have yet to finalise a new contract. 2020 Formula 1 World Championship calendar (subject to approval) 15 March Australia (Melbourne) 22 March Bahrain (Sakhir) 5 April Vietnam (Hanoi) 19 April China (Shanghai) 3 May Netherlands (Zandvoort) 10 May Spain (Barcelona) 24 May Monaco (Monaco) 7 June Azerbaijan (Baku) 14 June Canada (Montreal) 28 June France (Paul Ricard) 5 July Austria (Red Bull Ring) 19 July Britain (Silverstone) 2 August Hungary (Budapest) 30 August Belgium (Spa) 6 September Italy (Monza)* 20 September Singapore (Singapore) 27 September Russia (Sochi) 11 October Japan (Suzuka) 25 October USA (Austin) 1 November Mexico (Mexico City) 15 November Brazil (Sao Paulo) 29 November Abu Dhabi (Abu Dhabi) *subject to

World record burnout attempt may be ignored over lack of paperwork

A world record burnout attempt at Bandimere Speedway near Denver, Colorado could be going totally to waste, due to someone forgetting to file some paperwork.First of all, gathering 170 cars together to do a proper burnout is a feat within itself. Its pretty darn impressive, as can be clearly seen in video of the event. The problem with the attempt was the planning. While organizers did manage to get 170 cars to do a burnout at the same time (apparently more than the previous record of 126 cars in Australia) there was no adjudicator from Guinness World Records there to actually witness it, and there was no paperwork filled out with the record-keepers beforehand. So in the eyes of Guinness, this attempt may have never happened.According to an email sent to Motor1 from the Guinness adjudicators, the attempt was not confirmed, nor could the application for the record attempt be filed after the fact, even though retroactive applications for other records have been filed in the past at a cost of US$800.So, it seems like 340 tires were turned into smoke for no reason at all but to look kinda neat. Sorry, boys and girls. The question here is if the real world record even matters anymore. With the existence of the internet and video technology basically proving the stunt was done, does there really need to be a bunch of paperwork filled out and an actual witness to confirm it happened? We salute the horsepower junkies that did this, whether they get a room temperature stout at the end of the day or

Volkswagen ID R gains new look for Chinese record bid

Volkswagen has unveiled a new look for its record-breaking ID R electric motorsport car for its assault on the 99-turn Tianmen Shan Big Gate Road in China later this year. The 671bhp ID R smashed the outright Pikes Peak International Hill Climb record last year. It has followed up this year by setting a new electric lap record on the Nurburgring, and a new outright record at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. To highlight the car and the forthcoming ID range in China, the world’s biggest electric vehicle market, Volkswagen’s motorsport division will tackle the 6.8-mile Tongtian Avenue road, which runs up Tianmen Mountain near the city of Zhangjiajie, around 930 miles south-west of Beijing. The ID R tacked Goodwood in a grey colour scheme, representing VW’s initial official ID colour scheme. It then sported a blue livery for the Nurburgring and Goodwood, reflecting its links to Volkswagen’s hot R division. Red has been chosen because it is a lucky colour in China. The Tianmen Shan Big Gate Road, which is currently open only to buses, rises from 650ft to 4265ft above sea level, leading to Tianmen Cave at the top of the mountain. Because the road has never been used for competition before, there’s no record time for the ID R to break. Volkswagen will therefore stage an online gaming competition to allow participants to set a ‘virtual’ record, with the fastest time becoming the time for driver Romain Dumas to beat in September. Volkswagen is also hoping that other firms will use the newly established course for record bids in the future. Stephan Wollenstein, VW’s China boss, said he hoped the record attempt would “make Tianmen the place to develop electric cars, in order to achieve new dimensions.” Pikes Peak specialist Dumas believes a lack of knowledge will make this a different challenge. “So far, I only know the road from photos and a few videos,” he said. “The route is very winding, extremely narrow in places, and very uneven.” The ID R is powered by two electric motors, giving it a 0-62mph time of 2.25sec. Dumas also drove the car at last year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed. China is Volkswagen’s biggest market, with the firm operating several joint ventures in the country. It’s gearing up to launch the production version of the first ID model based on its MEB platform and is developing several specifically intended for the Chinese
