Mercedes-Benz has announced UK pricing and specifications for the second generation of its GLE Coupé, ahead of the model’s arrival in dealerships in spring 2020. Prices for the re-engineered BMW X6 rival start from £72,530 for the entry-level GLE 400 d 4Matic equipped with the AMG Line Premium Plus package, and rise to £80,615 for the AMG-tuned GLE 53 4Matic+ performance model. First customer deliveries are expected in summer 2020, with additional trim packages expected to be available nearer the time. The standard car is equipped with a 3.0-litre straight-six diesel motor producing 325bhp and 516lb ft, with the firm’s EQ Boost hybrid technology allowing for temporary boosts of 22bhp and 184lb ft. Fuel economy is quoted at up to 37.6mpg combined, with a certified emissions rating of 193g/km. The SUV can accelerate from 0-62mph in 5.7 seconds and on to a top speed of 149mph. As standard, AMG Line Premium Plus trim brings a pair of 12.3in digital infortainment displays, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a Burmester surround sound system, 22in alloy wheels, a panoramic sunroof and a range of advanced driver assistance programmes. An optional towing package – allowing for a towing capacity of 3500kg – is available for an additional £1150. The top-rung AMG model’s straight-six engine is petrol-powered, bumping power up to 429bhp for a 0-62mph time of 5.3 seconds and top speed of 155mph. Additional equipment over the standard car includes AMG’s active ride control technology, AMG steering wheel controls and a smartphone app which analyses journey and performance data. The newcomer raises the number of Mercedes SUV models to eight, indicating the significance to the brand of a sector that accounts for a third of its global sales. The GLE Coupé joins an ever-growing segment of style-focused variants of traditional high-riding models and can also count the Porsche Cayenne Coupé, Audi Q8 and Range Rover Velar as competitors. Despite sharing its underpinnings with the standard GLE, the GLE Coupé is 15mm longer and a substantial 63mm wider. Its wheelbase is 20mm longer than the previous version’s but is still 60mm shorter than the GLE’s. Mercedes claims this benefits handling and visual proportions. The roof height is 1722mm, 56mm lower than that of the standard model. Mercedes says aerodynamic efficiency has improved by 9% compared with its predecessor. From the bottom of the A-pillar forwards, the GLE Coupé looks nearly identical to the GLE, but from there back, it’s entirely different, with a steeper windscreen and rear window rake to account for that sloping roof, plus a bespoke rear-end shape. Wheels come in sizes from 19in to 22in, depending on the car’s spec. The interior of the GLE Coupé shares almost everything with its sibling, too, with the same dashboard layout dominated by two 12.3in screens and a raised centre console with integral grab handles. However, sports seats and a nappa leather sports steering wheel are standard fitments in the Coupé. Amazon Music streaming will also be available at launch. Mercedes claims the new car offers “tangibly more room” and a “significantly better sense of spaciousness” than its predecessor, thanks to the longer wheelbase and larger door openings. Storage capacity has increased, too. In seats-up form, the boot is only five litres larger than the old car’s, but with the 40/20/40 split folding rear bench down, that increase rises to 70 litres. The loading sill is lower than before, too, and the air suspension can drop the rear by a further 50mm at the press of a button. The chassis of the GLE Coupé is said to feature different tuning from its sibling, which is aimed at offering a “sportier and tauter” driving experience, with the air suspension fitted as standard on UK cars. When someone is set to splash north of a hundred grand on a car collection, it would be logically assumed at least one of the vehicles in the purchase would be able to move under its own power.Not this time. A collector in Virginia is parting with their entire fleet for US$125,000 and theres not a runner among them.Oh, yeah, did we mention its a Hot Wheels collection?An enormous Hot Wheels collection, to be precise. With the seller asserting there are no duplicates, nearly 25,000 of the toy cars are on offer. Like all good car ads, it contains the holy trinity of classified prose: bad grammar, a claim stating they know what they have, and assurances theyre definitely not parting it out.Spotted on a Hot Wheels collector page on Facebook by the gearheads at Hagerty, the ad contains twenty-six pictures of a mammoth Hot Wheels collection. The toy cars line walls, are neatly stacked on shelves and are displayed on a large dining room table. Asking price is in the US$125,000 ballpark according to the seller, though that sum was tossed out in the ads comment section and not in the advertisement copy itself.Everything looks to be meticulously organized and catalogued, with many of the models bearing a colored sticker dot on their box and others methodically arranged by year hung on enormous pegboards. Its a delightfully psychotic attention to detail.While $125,000 is certainly a lot of cheddar, it seems like a veritable bargain when one considers that collector Bruce Pascal once shelled out over $70,000 for a pre-production prototype Volkswagen Beach Bomb Surf Bus in hot pink. One of the 11 screen-used Eleanor Mustangs from the 2000 film Gone in 60 Seconds specifically the main Dream Car is scheduled to cross the auction block early January, and will likely clear US$1 million.The car was built for the movie by none other than Chip Foose, and it has just about every now-typical resto-mod touch on it, but its this car that has the distinction of being the inspiration for many of those tweak ubiquitous in hot rods now.Being the hero car or Dream Car of the 11, theres nothing fake about this Shelby-inspired 1967 Ford Mustang every component on it works, even the NOS system. This isnt some shell of a car used to model some CGI around, its a real, driveable hot rod.The Dream Car was used for exterior and interior shots, as well as chase scenes through the shipyard, city and along the Los Angeles River. Its the vehicle that likely would have been on-screen the longest. Not all of the 10 or 11 other vehicles used in filming had such cushy roles, or made it out in one piece.The last time this Mustang sold was at Mecum Auctions in Indianapolis, for US$1,000,000 coincidentally the budget of the original 1974 version of the film.The winner of this upcoming auction, held by Mecum in Kissimmee, Florida at the beginning of January 2020, can pretend to be Nicolas Cage, like all the other guys whove resto-modded their vehicles to look just like this one! Seat Mii Electric goes on sale The Mii Electric launches the electrified Seat range Orders are now being taken for Seat’s Mii Electric, with the first 300 customers set to benefit from a free home charger, charging cable, and three years’ free servicing and roadside assistance. Featuring a range of 161 miles on a charge (WLTP) from its 38.8 kWh battery, the Seat is fitted with a 61 kW electric motor. The Mii Electric uses a CCS inlet to allow rapid charging at up to 40 kW. This means a charge to 80% will take less than an hour, while charging at home or in public on a 7 kW unit will take about four hours. Seat has kitted out the Mii Electric in one trim level, and it’s well equipped. Fitted as standard are 16-inch alloys, rear privacy glass, leather steering wheel and gear selector, heated front seats, air conditioning, cruise control, automatic wipers, and rear parking sensors. Seat’s Drive Mii app is also available to download on to customer’s smartphone, which acts as infotainment system when fitted into the car’s cradle. This includes navigation, and an eco trainer. The addition of the Seat connect app also means drivers can access the usual EV features, such as remote climate control, pre-conditioning, driving data, and charging management. The Mii Electric sees the launch of an updated VW Group electric citycar range, with a refreshed VW e-up! and new Skoda Citigo-e iV due – all sharing the same powertrain. The Seat Mii Electric can be ordered now, with pricing at £19,300 including UK Plug-in Car Grant. Deliveries are expected towards the end of Q1 2020.

New Toyota Mirai fuel cell vehicle to go on sale in 2020
Toyota has revealed a dramatic new Mirai Concept, which previews the second-generation version of its hydrogen fuel cell vehicle. A production version of the car will go on sale in late 2020 it was revealed on the eve of the Tokyo motor show. The new hydrogen-powered concept is described as “a final-stage development model of the second-generation Mirai” and Toyota promises a major step forward in fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV) technology. It claims the new model offers a 30% increase in driving range over the current model, which has a range of just over 300 miles, along with improved driving performance. The new Mirai Concept is built on Toyota’s latest TNGA platform and features dramatic new styling, including a revamped front with a bold grille and a sweeping, coupé-esque rear. Toyota claims increased body rigidity and a lower centre of gravity than the original Mirai. The concept measures 4935mm long and 1885mm wide, with a wheelbase of 2920mm. It sits on 20in wheels and retains the four-door saloon layout of the original Mirai, which was launched in 2014. The interior has also been reworked. It features a 12.3in central touchscreen and a digital instrument display, with many of the controls moved to the centre of the dashboard. Notably, the Mirai now has five seats instead of the original’s four, which, Toyota says, has been enabled by a reworking of the hydrogen fuel cell configuration. Aside from the claimed increase in range, Toyota has not given specific details of development work done on the fuel cell powertrain. But it says the system, including the fuel cell stack, has been entirely redesigned and offers increased hydrogen storage. Bentley Bentayga Hybrid goes on sale in UK
The Bentley Bentayga Hybrid, the firm’s first electrified production vehicle, is now on sale in Europe and the UK, priced from £133,100. First revealed at the Geneva motor show in March 2018, order books for the plug-in hybrid SUV were due to open later that year. However, the launch was significantly delayed in the European market as a result of WLTP emissions certification. A Bentley spokesman said the setback was “due to WLTP certification, with business priority placed on getting the (new) Continental GT and GT Convertible on sale in as many markets as possible”. Customer deliveries of the Bentayga Hybrid are now set to get underway before the end of this year. The luxury plug-in hybrid is capable of up to 24.2 miles of electric-only range on the WLTP combined cycle. It couples a 126bhp, 295lb ft electric motor with a turbocharged 3.0-litre V6 petrol engine for a 0-62mph time of 5.5sec and top speed of 158mph. Total power output is unconfirmed, but it can be expected to match the 455bhp of the powertrain-sharing Porsche Cayenne E-Hybrid, while torque is rated at 516lb ft. Unique to the Bentayga Hybrid is a range of new sat-nav features that automatically calculate the “optimum combination of electric motor and engine” according to the planned journey. Three driving modes – EV, Hybrid and Hold – offer varying balances of electric and engine power, with regenerative braking working to recover energy at all times. The SUV is capable of 80.7mpg on the WLTP cycle, with CO2 emissions rated at 79g/km. Bentley claims the battery can be fully charged from empty in two and a half hours. The Bentayga Hybrid is Bentley’s first step into electrification and precedes an electrified version of the firm’s new Flying Spur luxury saloon that’s set to arrive in 2020. Volkswagen T-Roc R: hot compact SUV on sale from £38,450
The new Volkswagen T-Roc R is now available to order in the UK, with prices starting from £38,450. Standard equipment includes white paint, 19in alloy wheels and Volkswagen’s latest virtual cockpit system. Other colours are available from £360-£1075, while a leather and carbonfibre interior package can be equipped for an additional £2155, and an Akrapavoic sports exhaust system for £3000. First revealed at the Geneva motor show in March, the T-Roc R looks set to become one of the major players in the burgeoning performance crossover market. It is as closely related to the Golf R as lesser versions are to the regular Golf, sharing the same powertrain and base suspension components. That means it has the VW Group’s EA888 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine – now fitted with a particulate filter and in 296bhp tune – part-time Haldex-based all-wheel drive and a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox. Volkswagen claims a 4.9sec 0-62mph time – 0.3sec slower than the Golf R but 0.3sec quicker than the Cupra Ateca – and a governed 155mph top speed. Despite a close hardware relationship with the Cupra – and the Audi SQ2 – settings are unique for each car. Although it sits higher than the Golf, the T-Roc R is 20mm closer to the ground than the standard T-Roc thanks to lower suspension and firmer settings. Passive dampers are standard but VW’s dynamic chassis control system can be specified for £695. The T-Roc R gets 18in wheels as standard, with 19s as an upgrade option. All versions have the beefy 17in brakes from the Golf R Performance. Other visual changes include chunkier bumpers, an anodised finish for the radiator grille, matt chrome mirror caps and R badges. The cabin gets some carbonfibre trim and a sportier steering wheel, plus the option of the Golf R’s sport seats. QA with Jost Capito, R division boss What are the fundamentals of the R brand? “It is all-wheel drive, it is sporty and – after discussions with customers in a lot of countries – we know they want to see cars around 300 horsepower. People say why not go higher, but we need to hit a certain price, a sweet spot: we sell more than 20,000 Golf Rs a year.” How do you stop confusion with GTI models? “Firstly, they have two-wheel drive, but also they are more extreme. The R models have to be less racy, but with the same capability or even more. They always have more horsepower but are more about everyday usage. A TCR or Clubsport is much more aggressive. The GTI is in Up, Polo and Golf – and we are saying that R is starting with Golf.” So will there be several other R models? “The task I’ve been given is to make R to Volkswagen what M is for BMW. Best 50 cars on sale: Top five showdown
Can these really be the five best cars on sale in this country? Almost certainly not, for that is not what we set out to find. They are not the greatest driver’s cars, nor the ones that most exceed expectations, or come from that curious confection where cars appear to be without reason somehow greater than the sum of their constituent parts. There’s only one superlative that applies to this group: they’re simply the cars we like best. Which is how you get to see a Ford Fiesta and McLaren 600LT sharing space on the same page. How a four-door diesel saloon comes to duke it out with a mid-engined two-seat coupé, and how the presence of the perennially most versatile sports car of them all comes to brood over them. That all qualify as ‘fun to drive’ should surprise few reading this magazine. There are plenty of cars we really admire that got nowhere near even the top 50, let alone this top five, because driving entertainment didn’t make their ‘to do’ list. For us, enthusiasts to our toenails, to go top five you have to go top fun, too. Take the Fiesta. Yes, we’ve chosen an ST and it’s here in its own right, but also to represent all Fiestas. Last year, Ford sold 50% more Fiestas in the UK than the next best-selling car, a fact that makes us very happy. And, of course, that’s because the car is attractive and affordable to run and the deals are good, but the repeat business must in some part come from the fun it provides. I know a district nurse who has just given up a rival car for a 1.0-litre Fiesta and is utterly smitten. She knows nothing and cares less about cars but insists “I just really like the way it drives”. And that is enough for Ford to know it has done its job well. Haring across Wales in the ST and seeing how easily it keeps up with the pokier members of our happy band is instructive, not to mention highly entertaining. If you did the same journey back in 1981 in the first fast Fiesta, the original XR2, you’d see that in character, if very little else, not much has changed. There’s an infectious cheerfulness about this car, a willingness to be wrung out, hurled, flung and booted from place to place. More than any other here, it’s a car you drive on its throttle pedal because none is more inclined to adjust its attitude according to its opening. And, to us, that’s pretty much the definition of fun. Get the car into the corner by keeping off the gas, let the back go loose if that’s what it wants to do, because the moment you’re at the apex and on the power, it all falls beautifully back in line and you rocket away, grinning like a loon. And that’s pretty much the reason the BMW 320d has come from nowhere to make the top five of this list. When we performed this exercise last year and despite excluding all cars costing more than £50k, its predecessor didn’t even make the top 10. There’s plenty I’d choose to criticise about the 320d: on sport suspension, the ride quality sits on the challenging side of comfortable, the engine no longer has that bizarre willingness to rev of previous four-cylinder BMW diesels (blame WLTP, I suspect), and if I was going to be convinced by BMW’s curious new instrument layout, it would have happened by now. But all that is overshadowed, especially in a feature such as this, by the one thing it has gained. Or, I should say, regained. Being old enough to remember successive generations of early 3 Series, their position as weapon au choix among those in need of a compact saloon but who liked to drive was nothing less than inviolable. Okay, I’m not so ancient as to have been doing this job when the E21- generation 3 Series was on the market, but the E30, E36 and E46 ruled that particular roost with impregnable authority. But the more recent E90 and F30, while more rounded products, were also less distinct and cars concerned with all their occupants, not just the driver. Now with the G20, though, the balance has swung decisively back the other way. It’s the car’s handling that does it, the way it wolfs down a great road with such authority and precision that you might be tempted to look over your shoulder to check this really is a four-door family car, and not some hunkered-down sports coupé. The result is a 3 Series with a character we’ve not seen for nigh on 15 years and it’s great to have it back. It may not look it, but it is in many ways the most surprising car here. The least surprising should be the Alpine A110. What more can we add to the ocean of purple prose already expended upon this remarkable, game-changing little sports car? Only this: despite it all, despite the fact that it is as familiar to me as an old pair of slippers after having driven plenty and living with one as a daily driver for a few months, surprising it remains. There is so much about this car that flies in the face of the purist’s handbook – it has only four cylinders, it’s turbocharged, it’s a third down on the requisite pedal count and so on – that

Mario Andretti needs an introduction about as much as the Lamborghini Countach does. The Italian-born American racer has won races in IndyCar, Formula One, World Sportscar Championship, NASCAR and more. The Lamborghini Countach, produced from 1974 to 1990, was the first car to be designed in the covetable ‘Italian wedge’ style.Together, they are the poster children for speed — one personified, one mechanized. Imagine, then, how much a low-mileage Countach formerly ownedby the racing great would be worth. And now stop imagining and look at this figure: US$499,000 ($651,000). That’s how much this 1984 Lamborghini Countach S from the personal collection of Mr. Andretti is going for on Motorcar Gallery. The vehicle, a 371-horsepower 5.0-litre 5000 S model, was purchased new by Andretti in ‘84 as one of just 321 ever built. “Mario had good taste when he picked our car…The early carbureted Countach has a sound and feel that’s missing in the later fuel-injected versions,” reads the listing. “The red with tan combination is much more attractive than the Popsicle colors that were in vogue at the time.”“Cosmetically the car looks sharp. It sports the original red paint highlighted with a pinstripe incorporating Mario Andretti’s logo. The exterior rear view mirrors are also embellished with an Andretti logo. The interior is original, complete, and in top condition.”Motorcar Gallery says it had the car’s engine out to give it a “complete overhaul to new car specs.” This Countach may have been driven just a few miles (17,000 miles to be precise), but with Andretti behind the wheel, you can bet they were driven quickly.
