B.C. car show season ends with nod to the past

The Datsun 280Z of Robin Liu brought back great memories last weekend at Mission Raceway.Cam Hutchins This weekend is bittersweet for me as it brings to a close not only the car show season for another year, but also this column until the spring. The bright side is that the Greater Vancouver Motorsport Pioneers Society is hosting is annual induction ceremony and in my opinion is one of the best events to car-related events that takes place each year in Metro Vancouver. The GVMPS recognizes and records the vast contributions of those who were pioneers of motorsport in this region. The parking lot outside Shannon Hall is filled with cool cars as almost all who attend the ceremony have a passion for driving. An old school mate of mine, Mo Davidson, usually shows up with some cool old hot rod or racing boat. This year many cool Carnuts are getting inducted, including Wes Stinson, Laurie Fraser, Phil Jenson, Joe and Neva Ledlin as well as many others. Jim Flett, who recently passed away, was a larger than life builder of hot rods, customs and an amazing train set. Another mentionable entrant is one of the clubs I belong to, the Vancouver Chapter of the Vintage Car Club of Canada. In my mind the big news is fellow Postmedia journalist Alyn Edwards receiving the Sandy Lovelace Memorial Award for all he has contributed to the auto hobby with his regular features on car owners and their passion for their cars and families. You need not just a cool car, but also a cool story to get featured in one of Alyns stories. Having Alyn write about your car is often the biggest praise and recognition any car owner can achieve.I first met Alyn at the Langley Good Times Cruise-In and photographed his amazing 1968 Shelby GT 500KR convertible. To top it off Alyn gave me a ride home in the car. He regularly has garage tours of his collection for various car clubs (yet another great reason to join a car club). Congrats Alyn!Last weekend I was at the Mission Raceway for the road races and noticed inactivity in the paddocks of the drag strip. I looked online to see they had been cancelled. The weather was finebut soon turned bad, but the road races were great. I had the good luck to shoot beside veteran race photographer Brent Martin who mused that Chris Webb must not have qualified since he was at the back of the pack.Webbs bright yellow number 20 Chevrolet Monte Carlo was never a street car but a purpose-built racecar and shares almost nothing with its street distant cousin. This car is fast and on the second lap it was already past many and almost went off the track at the Greg Moore corner, Turn 2. Webb went from back to second place in one of the Closed Wheel 2 races. The big bad Viper of Doug Seal was a treat to watch and my favourite car was the Datsun 280Z of Robin Liu. The 240, 260 and 280Zs were the cars to own when I was growing up and it is great seeing them of the track. Unfortunately, the rain came out part way through the race, But they still raced hard knowing all the cars had the same weather handicap. There is another race October 12-13 and it is always rain or shine, but the cars really shine in the rain, so plan to bring a kid and not miss the next race.Have a great winter and see you in the spring!SHOWSSEPT. 20-21What: Columbia Valley Classics Autumn Show Shine.Where: The Springs Golf Course, RadiumWhen: Friday poker run 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Saturday car show 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.Show admission: FreeRegistration: Friday evening and Saturday at 7 a.m. $25 and open to all vehiclesInfo: 250-346-3222, 250-342-9817 or kvroberts@uniserve.comWebsite: radiumcarshow.comSEPT. 21What: 17th Annual Greater Vancouver Motorsport Pioneers Society Induction CeremonyWhere: Shannon Hall at the Cloverdale FairgroundsWhen: Doors open at noon, Ceremony 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.Admission: $20Info: 604-682-2631 or byjames@look.caWebsite: gvmps.orgWhat: All Triumph Drive InWhere: Rotary Park, PentictonWhen: 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.Admission: FreeWebsite: bctriumphregistry.com/ATDI2019.htmWhat: White Post Auto Museum Fall Swap MeetWhere: White Post Auto Museum, 4439A Trans Canada Hwy., TappenWhen: 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.Admission: $2 Kids under 12 freeInfo: 250-835-2224 or wpam@hotmail.caWebsite: whitepostautomuseum.comSEPT. 22What: Brookswood Secondary School Car ShowWhere: Brookswood Secondary School, 20902 37A Ave., LangleyWhen: 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.Admission: $3 Kids 5 and under freeRegistration: starts at 8 a.m. $15 and open to all vehiclesInfo: 604-992-7507 or bsscarshow@gmail.comWebsite: bsscarshow.com COMPETITIONSEPT. 21What: Oval racingWhere: Agassiz Speedway, 5045 Cemetery Rd., AgassizInfo: 604-792-FAST(3278) or agassizspeedway@telus.netWebsite: agassizspeedway.comWhat: DriftingWhere: Penticton Speedway, 2070 Carmi Ave., PentictonWebsite: pentictonspeedway.comWhat: Hydroforce Excavating Championship NightWhere: Western Speedway, 2207 Millstream Rd., VictoriaWebsite: westernspeedway.netSEPT. 21-22What: CMDRA Bike DragsWhere: Mission Raceway Park,

Trailer for new season of ‘Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee’ released

Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee Season 11: Freshly BrewedNetflix Jerry Seinfelds car-based TV show Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee returns to Netflix this summer with an impressive list of comedians and cars, and were also assuming coffee. The show has come a long way since it first started out on Crackle; it now resides on Netflix, and has a much better budget. Were glad to see that the format, the cars and the people have remained high-quality, while the actual show production has improved steadily. While all of the guests Jerry chooses for the show are special, this particular season includes a guest that may be more famous than Seinfeld himself, Eddie Murphy. Also jumping into the passenger seat to grab a brew with Jerry are Seth Rogen, Ricky Gervais, Matthew Broderick, Jamie Foxx, Sebastian Maniscalco, Martin Short, Mario Joyner, Melissa Villaseor, Bridget Everett and Barry Marder. When we first saw the roster for the next season, we tried our best to guess what cars Jerry would have picked for his guest based on the pictures provided, and we have to say, we did pretty well. The only one that stumped us was Martin Shorts ride, which we now know to be a green-on-green Mercedes W123 Wagon. Classy, but how that ties in to Shorts personality, we shall have to wait and see.Other vehicles include a Porsche Carrera GT, Porsche 356, Volkswagen Thing, Nissan Figaro and more. The show will return to Netflix for its 11th season on July

Car show season heats up in B.C.

This Celica GTS was fan favourite at the recent Wednesday Night Drift Drags at Mission Raceway Park.Cam Hutchins Last weekend is a blur, though I do recall it actually started on Wednesday at the Drift Drags in Mission when I tried to enter my old Chevy. I was ready to go with money for entry, no antifreeze in the radbut I was wearing shorts. You dont need a helmet for these slow old vehicles, but turns out you do need long pants! It wasnt a wasted journey though as I had fun shooting photos of the drifting, and really enjoyed watching a cool gunmetal blue Toyota Celica GTS that was very similar to one I recently sold. Toyota spent a bunch of money designing an independent rear suspension to keep these cars from having their backends kick outand now it is a sport. Longtime hot rodder John Chace was there to watch his grandson who is one of the very talented drifters from around here.Last Saturday I was at the big KMS show, and was delighted in the number trucks in attendance. Probably the coolest truck there, apart from my 1966 Green C-10 Chevy with new hubcaps, was the Bissonettes 1969 Ford F-250 Camper Special pickup. The truck was ordered with Duo-tone Paint for an extra $70, but due to a Ford Factory error it got the Tri-tone paint at no extra charge. The truck cost $4,870 new at Suburban Motors in Victoria and has been lovingly cared for for half a century. Another cool truck that could be from a science fiction movie from the Fifties is Ron Bakers 1942 WC-6 ton Dodge Command Car. It is the only one in Canada and will be at the Cloverdale Legion this weekend at the military vehicle display. In terms of classic cars, Stan Karras notchback 1968 Shelby tribute car was a real head turner. He told me it was based on the Green Hornet EXP-500 Shelby Prototype that was first used as the prototype for the California Special. An Independent rear suspension was added and Conelec fuel-injection system to become a Shelby IRS prototype. Karras took his tribute one step closer than most as he added the in independent rear suspension from a late-model Shelby GT 500.This weekend Im in a parade in Vancouvers West Side on Saturday and on Sunday I will most likely head out to Chilliwack and then to the Strong Car Clubs 3rd Stay Gold Custom Car Show, which supports the work the Langley Community Services Society does for people with mental illness. Whenever I think of the Strong Car Club I think of the big grin on Ken Laviolettes face when he would tell me of the work he had done on a car he was finishing. Kens memory will be very strong at this car showplease attend and help support this worthy cause. And bring a kid along, even though it is at a school!SHOWSJUNE 21What: Kitimat Show ShineWhere: Tamitik Arena, KitimatWhen: 6 p.m. to 10 p.m.Admission: FreeRegistration: 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. $10 and open to all cars, trucks and motorcycles.Info: 250-639-2621, derickstinson@gmail.com or kitimatcarshow@gmail.comJUNE 21-22What: 14th Annual Burns Lake Show ShineWhere: Burns LakeWhen: Friday evening cruise. 5 p.m. at CNC Parking Lot; Saturday show at Burns Lake Spirit Square, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. followed by Poker RunAdmission: FreeRegistration: Saturday 10 a.m. $10 and open to all makes and models.Info: 250-692-6035 or katherine.mcphail@hotmail.comJUNE 21-23What: Annual Peach City Beach CruiseWhere: PentictonWhen: Friday Beach to Peach Parade; Saturday car show 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Sunday awards and O.S.N.S. motorcycle raffle drawAdmission: FreeInfo: 250-487-2303 or info@peachcitybeachcruise.comWebsite: peachcitybeachcruise.comJUNE 22What: Cloverdale Legion Open House Military Vehicle DisplayWhere: 17567 57th Ave., CloverdaleWhen: 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.Admission: Donations acceptedRegistration: Open to all military vehiclesInfo: 778-955-9111 or cmec.events@shaw.caWebsite: cloverdale-ae.ca/market-days.htmlWhat: Cruiser Days Show ShineWhere: Hougen Park, Abbotsford,When: 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.Admission: FreeRegistration: $10 and open to Toyota 4WD vehicles onlyInfo: 604-309-5233 or robert@ajae.caWebsite: coastalcruisers.caJUNE 23What: Strong Car Clubs 3rd Stay Gold Custom Car ShowWhere: H.D. ‘Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee’ is back for an eleventh season

Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee Season 11: Freshly BrewedNetflix Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee is back July 19 with new guests, as well as some old favourites, Netflix announced mid-June.Funnyman Jerry Seinfeld pairs his favourite comedians with cars that match their personality, and they go for a ride and a coffee. As usual, weve scrutinized the press release photos to try to scope out the cars Jerry has decided to match to his comic co-stars, and we think weve gotten pretty much all of them.Jamie Foxx appears to be in a Maserati Mistral; thats Sebastian Maniscalco on a Vespa; we see Ricky Gervais in a Rolls-Royce, and Matthew Broderick gets a Lamborghini Huracan.Barry Marders ride is a drop-top Porsche 356; theres Mario Joyner in a VW Thing; Melissa Villaseor is, we think, in a Nissan Figaro; Seth Rogen rocks a 1974 Dodge Monaco (a.k.a. the Bluesmobile); and we get Bridget Everett in a 61 Cadillac drop-top.I love the coffee. ⁣I love the cars. ⁣I love the comedians. ⁣And yes, doing the show with Eddie was really special. pic.twitter.com/0rAEMcvjV3 Jerry Seinfeld (@JerrySeinfeld) June 18, 2019Eddie Murphy, no doubt the star of this season, is paired up with a Porsche Carrera GT, arguably the best sports car Porsches ever made. The only one we cant figure out is the wagon-SUV that Martin Short is being ferried along in, so perhaps you, the reader, can tell us!The new season of CCC and all 11 episodes therein will be released on Netflix on July 19 2019, where all questions (and laughter) will be

Ford wraps the race GT in new Le Mans liveries for its final season

The factory Ford Le Mans GT team for the 2019 seasonFord Four years ago, Ford roared back to Le Mans with its factory GT program, intent on marking the golden anniversary of sending Ferrari to bed without their supper. They did so in fine style, winning the 2016 event and standing on the podium where so many greats have stood before. Ford will close another great chapter at Le Mans for the factory team, choosing to bow out of the race after the 2019 soirée. To mark the occasion, Ford has revealed a special series of “Celebration Liveries” for the Ford Chip Ganassi Racing Ford GTs ahead of the 2019 Le Mans 24 Hours. Each of the four factory Ford GTs will bear a livery that celebrates the success of the manufacturer at Le Mans, both in the present day and during the 1960s when they kicked Ferrari around like an unloved rag doll. The #66 Ford GT raced by Mücke, Pla and Johnson has a black livery that echoes the Ford GT40 of Bruce McLaren and Chris Amon, the one that won Le Mans in 1966. The Ford GT40 piloted by Dan Gurney and A.J. Foyt to victory at Le Mans in ‘67 is evoked in the #67 livery, a whip which will be handled by the trio of Priaulx, Tincknell and Bomarito. Marking more recent history is the #68 car, racing in the same colours as when it won Le Mans in 2016. At the wheel this year are Müller, Hand and Bourdais. With all this success, why not add a fourth car? The #69 Ford GT of Dixon, Briscoe and Westbrook takes its design cues from the Ford GT40 that came second to the black car during Ford’s 1-2-3 finish in 1966. An outfit called Keating Motorsports is fielding what’s referred to as a customer team this year as well. It’ll bear #85 and race in the GTE Am class. It’ll use the same livery design as the four factory Fords but in the colours of its title sponsor, Wynn’s. The Ford GTs will be on track in their new celebration liveries this Sunday (June 2nd) for the official Le Mans Test. Fans will be able to follow the 24-hour race on June 15 to 16 from inside the cockpit of the factory Ford GTs via
