Las Vegas, NEVADAMopar or Chevy? Diesel power or electric energy? Battery versus brawn? Old rivalries were made new again at the 2019 SEMA show in Las Vegas, as GM and FCA each breathed new life into a couple of their old trucks.Dedicated to the automotive aftermarket, the SEMA show is jammed with modified vehicles showing off new products. Some of the major automakers get in on the action, creating or commissioning their own builds for the show. This year, that included transforming two trucks a 1962 Chevy C-10 and 1968 Dodge D200.Both drew the crowds, but they were as different as they could be. The Chevy had a couple of electric motors under the hood, while the Dodge went old-school with a diesel. See how they stacked up and which do you prefer?1962 Chevrolet E-10 Chevy changed C-10 to E-10 for what the company dubbed its E-Crate motor, and its basically made by stacking electric motors together and with components from the Bolt electric compact car.The E-10 has a dual-stack system, and GM claims more than 450 horsepower and 470 lb.-ft. of torque at the wheels. Zero to 96 km/h is about five seconds, and the truck is estimated in the high 13-second range for the quarter-mile. But dont expect it to do it silently: theres an emulator on board that churns out the sound of V8 induction and exhaust.A custom truck is more than an engine, and the E-10 has an adjustable air suspension, 20- and 22-inch wheels, illuminated bowtie badges and a digital instrument cluster. The hood and tailgate have been smoothed out, the drip rails have been shaved, and the 62 grille has been replaced with one used in 1964. The E-10 isnt just for show. GM says the E-Crate is a concept but its also a fully-functional prototype that could one day be available to drop into anything that is currently set up for a Chevy LS engine currently (no pun intended) the engine of choice for most hot-rod and custom-car conversions. These next-generation electric motors can be stacked three-high for more than 1,000 horsepower. Right now the E-10s box is taken up with the battery, but the E-Crate can run on a range of 350 to 800 volts, so the battery can be sized for practicality or performance.Mopar Lowliner Concept The Lowliner also has a battery, but its just there to turn over the trucks 5.9-litre Cummins engine. The inline-six is considered legendary by diesel fans, and was first put into a Ram truck in 1989; the Ram brands current 6.7L diesel choice initially appeared in 2007.The 5.9L started with 12 valves but went to 24 valves in 1998, and its the 2-4 thats in this truck now. And heres the best part: the transmission has to be manually shifted through its six gears. The designers started with a 1968 Dodge D200 Sweptline heavy-duty Camper Special that they found in Ohio. They boxed the frame, and in addition to extending the wheelbase, pushed the front axle forward 76 millimetres. An adjustable air suspension on both axles gives it low, driving height, and driving height-plus positions. But while the trucks been lowered, the bed heights been raised by welding in the box floor from a new Ram 1500 and that was done to accommodate the air suspension and the fuel cell.Just about everything on the outside has been customized: the front end flips forward electrically, the handle-free doors open with electric poppers, the badges and chrome have been shaved off, the headlights and taillights are LED, the fuel fillers now mounted in the bed, and the Candied Delmonico red paint has the Mopar M subtly ghosted into the fenders.Take Our Poll The wheels are styled on the smoothie stamped-steel design that was popular in the 1960s, but while those were usually 15 inches, the Lowliner rides on 22s, with wide enough tires that the rear wheel wells have been widened. The interiors done in distressed-look leather, the shifter ball has a Cummins logo, and the original 1968 steering wheel is still in place.Unlike the E-10, which could potentially spin off a production aftermarket conversion, the Lowliner is all about the show. But we like em both, and really like that two old trucks that were already cool have been made even

Prototype Shelby ‘Green Hornet’ Mustang restored, unveiled at SEMA
One of two notchback coupe Mustangs that both Ford Motor Company and Shelby American used as prototypes, the other being Little Red. Craig Jackson of Barrett-Jackson unveiled the newly restored Green Hornet at SEMA with Shell and Pennzoil. A one-of-two Shelby EXP500 prototype has made its just-off-a-restoration debut at SEMA 2019.The vehicle started life as a Lime Gold-painted testbed for Fords Mustang California Special, and featured a few distinct features that set it apart from the regular notchback coupe.Marchal fog lights were fitted to the grille; spin-and-click hood pins were installed on the vented hood; the rear tail panel had a larger spoiler; and the taillights were replaced with units from a 1965 Thunderbird.Once Ford had gotten its use out of the Mustang, they sent it over to Carroll Shelby to tinker with. Shelby immediately painted the vehicle in a wild metal-flake green paint and replaced the 390-cubic-inch V8 with a 428-c.i. unit with Conelec fuel injection. An in-house designed six-speed automatic and independent rear suspension was fitted to top it all off. All the changes meant the vehicle saw a zero-to-96-km/h time of just 5.7 seconds and a top speed of 252 km/h (157 miles per hour).Shelby American only built two notchback coupe versions of the GT500, and this green example is the twin to “Little Red,” a hardtop lost for years and just recently found. The cars name, incidentally, came from Bill Cosby the Billy Cosby. Cosby had been a long-time friend of Shelby, and when he first took a look at the Mustangs wild green colour, he dubbed it The Green Hornet, taking inspiration from the favourite superhero of the animated characters in Fat Albert. The vehicle was presented at SEMA 2019 by its owner, Craig Jackson, CEO of Barrett-Jackson auctions, and

Custom Dodge Challenger gets stolen, wrecked in police chase, still makes it to SEMA
A Dodge Challenger show car with 1,000 horsepower was stolen just before this years SEMA convention and crashed but still managed to make it to the show floor on time. The car was built by Quintin Brothers Auto and Performance in Vermont, who sent it to Las Vegas where the SEMA parts convention is held. The Challenger was reported stolen on October 30, when it was swiped from the overflow parking lot of the Main Street Station Casino.According to local news, Nevada Highway Patrol was at some point dispatched to the parking structure of the Rio Hotel and Casino, where they found the stolen vehicle. In an attempt to stop the thief from leaving, an officer parked in front of the car, but before he could leave his vehicle, the Challenger rammed into the side of his cruiser and proceeded to escape the parking complex. The vehicle was later abandoned at The Boulevard Mall and then given back to its owners to display at the show. We were in shock, we couldnt imagine that anything like this could ever happen, shop co-owner Cole Quintin said. It looks like they were living in the thing, but they only had it for about 11 hours. The front end was smashed in the hit-and-run police chase, making it look more like a drift missile than a straight-line star. Were sure that with 1,000 horsepower it would burn up the rear tires either way. Props to the builders on still showing the car, even though everyone wouldve completely understood if theyd decided not to. The 2020 Mopar Dodge Challenger Drag Pak, unveiled at the 2019 SEMA Show, delivers sportsman racers a new, turnkey package loaded with suspension and chassis upgrades and is certified for NHRA and NMCA competition. Production is limited to 50 serialized units. Mopar Speaking of Challengers, Mopar itself had a little debut at SEMA heralding the return of the Drag Pak after a five-year hiatus. The fourth generation of the special edition makes more power than the previous version, according to Mopar, and the previous version made 1,200 horsepower and ran mid-7-second quarter-miles, so hold onto your socks for the official numbers. That massive output comes courtesy of a supercharged 5.8-litre V8 coupled to a manually shifted three-speed automatic transmission. Mopar will build 50 of the

Toyota teases retro-inspired custom Supra 3000GT for SEMA
Toyotas concept car reveal scheduled for SEMA 2019 is a coupe that pays tribute to the A80 Supra 3000GT concept of the 1990s.Starting with a 2020 GT Supra, TRD (Toyota Racing Development) takes the already-wild-looking vehicle and adds a few more touches to make it the Supra most of us think about when the name is uttered. The hood has those four familiar cutouts, while the big wing makes a return to the rear. Wide fender flares round out the body, as well as the changes.Toyota released an almost-six-minute video detailing what made the original 3000GT of 1994 stand out, and we can see the automaker wants the 2020 Supra to stand out in the same way as a real racing machine. Stylized flashes of the vehicle in production show a lot of the details, including mapping out the awesome hood grilles and the rear spoiler. As for the engine, we can assume TRD wont leave that alone. The straight-six makes 335 horsepower from three turbocharged litres, and we know theres room for more, as the same engine makes 382 horsepower between the fenders of its German cousin. Well have to wait until the vehicle is unveiled for true figures, though. In Japan, upgrade parts like the ones that will be fit to the 3000GT are already available. We hope that with the unveiling of the concept at the aftermarket showcase show, wide-body kits and wings will be available for North Americans to buy straight from the

Hyundai teases silly off-road Veloster concept for SEMA
SEMA is typically the place where all the most ridiculous custom vehicles gather to make us gag, but in recent years its actually been a hotbed for manufacturers who want to bring out some factory-built custom cars. And this year Hyundai is bringing a real doozy. Its called the Grappler, aptly named after its chunky tires and off-road looks. Its Hyundais idea of a pre-runner Veloster, and we love it.More than just a set of tires and a lift, the Grappler has seen the front bumper ditched in favour of a skid plate and fog lights. On the roof is a classic tubular roof rack with a spare tire and an LED light bar; according to Hyundai the rack is also the base for a solar panel. This is clearly just an artists rendering of the final product (and a poorly one done, at that) but we fully expect Hyundai to bring this car to SEMA. A few years ago, Hyundai also brought a few customized vehicles to the show, including a jacked-up Santa Fe complete with Rockstar energy drink stickers and digital camo.Hyundai wont likely bring the vehicle to production, but that wont stop us from wanting one. Luckily, it wouldnt be too hard to take the bumper off and add a roof rack to a Veloster to make our own; wed love to see a bunch of these out on the trail embarrassing bros in their massive

Ringbrothers to bring wildly customized ’69 Camaro, Mustang to SEMA
A teaser image of the Ringbrothers 1969 Chevy Camaro, to be unveiled at SEMA 2019Ringbrothers Renowned customizing shop Ringbrothers is bringing two classic vehicles to this years SEMA show in Las Vegas, a 1969 Chevrolet Camaro and a 1969 Ford Mustang.Of course, they will be barely recognizable compared to the stock versions of each vehicle, judging from the teaser images of the cars. The Camaro is dubbed Valkyrja, and has an extended wheelbase with fender flares. The Mustang takes the name Unkl, and will sport a blue racing livery to go along with its low-slung looks. Both cars have massive front splitters, and huge hood bulges hiding heaps of horsepower.Under the hood of the Mustang is a John Kasse 520-cubic-inch Boss V8. Specs have not been revealed, but rumours of the motor pushing 800 horsepower are circulating. As for the Camaro, a 416-cubic-inch LS engine sourced from Wegner provides the motivation there. Again, specs are top-secret.The teaser silhouette images of the cars let loose by the shop are both way too dark to give us any meaningful idea of what the Mustang or Camaro look like. However, brightening it up a tad reveals a few more of the details on the builds, including a racing number on the side of the Mustang; and a two-tone paint job on the Camaro. Both vehicles obviously have huge wheels, because a rim with a diameter greater than 18 inches is pretty much a requirement to get into SEMA at this point. View this post on Instagram Big things coming at @semashow this year. Stay tuned for more! Any guesses what we’re unveiling? A post shared by Ringbrothers (@ringbrothers) on Oct 7, 2019 at 7:27pm PDTRingbrothers other teaser released on Instagram gave us a better look at the Camaro, or at least the cars rear end. While it may not give us a lot in terms of surface area, it does show off the cars carbon-fibre roof panel, revealed in a style vaguely reminiscent of the originals vinyl top; and the colour palette for the car.It looks like its the classic battle of the pony cars all over again, Camaro versus Mustang. If either of these vehicles were to make their way into your garage, which would you rather
