The ‘Jackal’ is a Ford Raptor-rivaling off-road Chevy Silverado

The PaxPower Jackal Chevrolet SilveradoPaxPower via Instagram Chevy might not have yet announced an off-road rival to Ford’s mighty F-150 Raptor, but that doesnt mean enthusiasts dont have options.Texas-based truck tuner PaxPower will now turn your Silverado 1500 into a Jackal, a truck with the Raptor squarely in its headlights.According to Motor Authority, the Jackal will come in three flavours, starting with a five-inch lift, custom hood and fender flares, remote-reservoir coil-overs and shocks, and some bolt-on engine equipment that tweaks everything up to 449 horsepower and 474 lb.-ft. of torque. Of course none of this comes cheap, and youre looking at a range of US$15,000 to US$35,000 moving from Stage 1 to Stage 3.PaxPower made its name among Raptor fans when Ford moved the truck into its second-generation and substituted a turbocharged V6 for the previous V8. Theres no replacement for displacement, and PaxPower put an eight-cylinder back between the frame rails, along with the option of a diesel engine. It says its also working on go-faster, go-farther stuff for the mid-size Ford Ranger. Why GM isnt doing this on its own is surprising, given the Raptors popularity, and also Rams unveiling of its Rebel TRX concept truck. Were still waiting to see that one actually hit the pavement the concept was first shown in 2016 but it seems like something that would be ripe for a Hellcat engine if or when it finally arrives. While we love PaxPowers Jackal, were also aware that its all happening in Texas, so its unlikely Canadian fans will have access to it. We sure hope somebody comes up with a way to easily get this thing across the

GM may be building a Silverado ‘ZRX’ to take on Ford’s Raptor

Bowtie fans are spoilt for choice if they want a mid-size truck packing acres of off-road cred, with the ZR2 and ZR2 Bison bringing the goods. The full-size cupboard is slightly more bare, given Trail Boss trucks arent level competitors to the mighty Ford F-150 Raptor. However, if the rumour mill is working reliably, that situation will change very soon. Those in the know over at GM Authority are reporting Chevy is planning an off-road brute with the chops to take on the Raptor. Potentially called the ZRX, this Silverado variant could slot in above the current Trail Boss.It would be a sensible move for GM to make, given it currently has no answer to the Raptor or Ram’s upcoming Rebel TRX. Chevrolet could leverage its relationship with Multimatic, the company which manufacturers the excellent DSSV suspenders found on the Colorado ZR2 pickup. Your author has launched bowtie trucks equipped with these dampers at speed off various and sundry off-road obstacles and can confidently report that, even at speeds approaching 65 km/h, landing back on terra firma is no more harsh than flopping down on a comfortable bed.Silverados unique weight and dimensions, compared to the smaller Colorado, would likely require some fettling of those dampers by the boffins at Multimatic. Dont expect a simple swap, in other words. Other goodies likely to appear on a Silverado ZRX are front and rear lockers; different fasciae for better approach and departure angles; and a raft of appropriately aggro trim features. The brands hand-of-god 6.2-litre V8 is a natural fit for a truck of this ilk, especially given that it is available in the Trail Boss for 2020. Its unlikely Chevy would allow little bro to out-power the big guns, after all. Given that GM offers the Colorado ZR2 with that trucks diesel option, it wouldnt be a surprise for them to list the Silverados new 3.0-litre diesel on a ZRX option sheet.Expect this Raptor-fighter to show up on dealer lots within the next couple of

GM expands Sierra, Silverado brake-issue recall to 3.4 million trucks in U.S.

2016 Chevrolet Silverado Under pressure from the U.S. federal government, General Motors is recalling roughly 3.46 million big pickup trucks and SUVs Stateside to fix a brake problem. The roughly 300,000 trucks affected in Canada were already recalled this past summer. The recall covers the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra 1500, 2500 and 3500 pickups from the 2014 through 2018 model years. Also included are the Cadillac Escalade from 2015 to 2017, and the GMC Yukon and Chevy Suburban and Tahoe from 2015 through 2018.GM says that as it ages, the pump in the power-assist brakes can put out less vacuum power than needed, increasing stopping distance and the risk of a crash. The recall comes after the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration began investigating the problem in November of last year.Dealers will recalibrate the electronic brake control module at no cost to customers. Owners were to be notified starting Sept. 6.NHTSA, the U.S. governments road safety agency, began investigating the problem last year after getting 111 complaints from owners of poor brake performance. At the time the agency had nine reports of crashes that had caused two injuries.GM says the problems occur rarely and mostly at low speeds like driving in parking lots. Even with the problem, the brakes continue to function and exceed the requirements of the appropriate federal motor vehicle safety standard, GM spokesman Dan Flores said. The vacuum pump is lubricated with engine oil that flows through a filter screen. In some of the trucks, oil sludge or other debris can clog the screen, reducing oil flow and causing the pumps vacuum output to drop, Flores said. The trucks, he said, have a secondary power brake assist system which works when there are problems with the main system, but it is limited at lower speeds. The reprogramming will activate the secondary system faster.GM isnt replacing the pumps because pump failures are rare and already are covered by an extended warranty, Flores said. This remedy will improve brake performance in any situation where brake vacuum drops, he

2020 GMC Sierra, Silverado 1500 diesel tops segment in highway fuel economy ratings

2020 Chevrolet Silverado Diesel In the never-ending Detroit truck wars, manufacturers are looking for any and all advantages with which to beat their competition over the head like a coked-up wrestler towing, payload ratings, and most recently, fuel economy. For 2020, the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra duo are available with a snazzy new 3.0-litre inline-six diesel engine lashed to a 10-speed automatic transmission. This option allows the truck to cut back on its drinking, with the EPA awarding the powertrain an estimated 7.1 L/100 kilometres (33 miles per gallon) highway fuel economy for rear-wheel drive models. If youre keeping track at home, the other two diesel-powered pickups in the half-ton segment the Ford F-150 and Ram 1500 are rated at 30 and 27 mpg on the highway cycle, respectively. In a market where manufacturers go to great lengths to eke out a single mpg over their rival, GMs accomplishment is remarkable. With 277 horsepower and 460 lb.-ft. of torque on tap, the 3.0L Duramax is the first diesel engine offered in a GM half-ton since 1997. It has an aluminium block, active thermal management to heat critical components more quickly, and an automatic start/stop system. Working in concert with the 10-speed automatic, this power team is one of six in the lineup for 2020. Truck fans of the brand are spoiled for choice. Having sampled the Silverady 1500 Duramax about a month ago, we came away impressed with its drivetrain, providing plenty of shove without clattering like the diesels of old. In terms of price, expect to pay roughly the same premium for the Duramax as one would for the 6.2L V8 in comparison to the 5.3L V8.To be clear, the press bumf specifies the 2020 Chevrolet Silverado as receiving this plaudit, but theres no reason to imagine its GMC twin wont earn the same rating. City economy is pegged at 10.2 L/100 kilometres, or 23 mpg. Models with 44 drivelines are rated at 29 mpg highway and 23 city. While the Silverado outsells the Sierra by a wide margin in the U.S., the Sierra actually outsold the Silverado in Canada last year by about 1,000 units. Expect these Duramax half-tons to show up on dealer lots later this

First Drive: 2020 Chevrolet Silverado HD

2020 Chevrolet Silverado HDCosta Mouzouris / Driving BEND, Oregon If you drive a heavy-duty pickup, Chevrolet is calling you fat. Really. Just look at this claim, lifted directly from the press release of the 2020 Silverado HD: The all-new 2020 Silverado HD is longer, wider and taller than its predecessor and is scaled for HD customers. Maybe its time to hit the gym.Alright, theres no need to send angry letters to GM telling them that youll drive a Ford from now on. More accurately, what Chevrolet is saying is that it has scaled up its heavy-duty trucks to meet the increasing demands of HD truck customers. Owners want to get more out of their trucks in terms of capability, because according to Chevy they are working those trucks harder. The 2020 Silverado HD is 40 millimetres taller, 35 millimetres wider, and up to 264 millimetres longer than before, and the wheelbase has been lengthened by up to 132 millimetres. Volume has been increased in both the 6.9- and eight-foot beds, to 1,728 and 2,162 litres (up 242 and 202) respectively. Two engines are available. One is the all-new and much more powerful 6.6-litre direct-injected V8 that develops 401 horsepower and 464 pound-feet of torque, up 41 hp and 81 lb.-ft. compared to the outgoing 6.0L V8. Like before, it powers a six-speed automatic transmission. The other engine is the optional 6.6-litre Duramax turbodiesel V8 that claims 445 horsepower, and almost double the gas engines torque, at 910 lb.-ft. While its the same diesel as previously available, it now couples with an Allison 10-speed automatic transmission, making a big difference in the diesels performance. An active transfer case is standard on 44 models, automatically shifting between two- and four-wheel drive depending on the situation. The diesel driveline has been upgraded with larger front and rear axles, larger ring gears in the differentials, and 30-per-cent larger-diameter drive shafts, which has increased towing capacity by up to 52 per cent, now maxing out at 35,500 pounds. Payload varies from 3,600 to 7,500 pounds, depending on the model. The five available trim levels include Work Truck, Custom, LT, LTZ and High Country, each one getting progressively more equipped. To test the new Silverado HDs capability, our hosts hooked up a trailer carrying the maximum 35,500-pound load to a 3500 diesel duallie. The trailer had a huge anvil-shaped prop loaded for visual effect, thought the actual weight came from a pile of large metal plates beneath it.You dont even feel the weight, boasted several of Chevys marketing gurus about the Silverados ability to pull the rig. Truth is, you do feel the weight its more than 15 tonnes, after all but the Silverado pulled the trailer with so little effort that, had its weight not been divulged to me ahead of driving it, Id have never guessed that it were anywhere near the maximum capacity. The truck pulled away effortlessly and shifted gears smoothly, with smaller steps between gears than on the former six-speed. It also accelerated quite briskly considering the load it had in tow. The diesel is equipped with an after-run feature that keeps the engine running for up to 15 minutes after the truck is shut off to allow it to cool down after towing a particularly heavy load. If engine temperature is high, the driver will be prompted to turn the system on after shutting down, and if the driver does not do so and shuts off the engine anyway, it will restart on its own and run until it cools to an acceptable temperature. An integrated power take-off unit (PTO) is now a factory-installed option, so owners dont have to equip their trucks with an add-on aftermarket unit, or alter their trucks if they want to use them to power work equipment. There is also a removable lower panel on the front bumper to allow installation of a snowplow, again without having to permanently modify the truck. Another handy feature is an integrated block heater plug, located at the lower left side of the front bumper, so you dont have to pop the hood or pull a wire through the front grill if you need to plug in. If you do need to pop the hood, note that the reach is a long way up to pull it back down this is one tall truck.Chevy has done an excellent job of isolating the cab, and the interior is quiet and the ride smooth. The serene cabin doesnt make the Silverado HD feel like a truck ready for heavy worksite duty, at least not on smooth roads. But theres no masking the firmness of a suspension built to pull more than 35,000 pounds; the ride is harsh when driving over big bumps.A back-to-back trailer pull with a gasoline and a diesel Silverado HD revealed why you should opt for the diesel if you haul heavy loads regularly. A gasoline-powered 2500 crew cab hauled 12,000 lb with relative ease, but the engine produced more noise and didnt accelerate as hard as the a 2500 Duramax pulling a 14,000-pound load. The trailering route included some long hills, which

First Drive: 2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Duramax Diesel

2020 Chevrolet Silverado Diesel REDMOND, Oregon Chevrolet redesigned the Silverado 1500 pickup for 2019, and as with any normal upgrade, it got bigger, lighter, and more capable. New materials and a lighter yet more rigid frame contributed to drop in weight of up to 204 kg compared to the previous model. It also got a number of available engines. Five of those engines run on gasoline; the 3.0-litre Duramax turbo-diesel is the latest engine to be added to the Silverados powertrain choices, and it is the only engine free of spark plugs. Its a high-tech inline six, with aluminum block and cylinder head, dual overhead cams and four valves per cylinder. It also uses a variable-geometry turbo that adjusts boost pressure based on demand, as well as an electronically controlled variable-flow intake manifold among other power boosting features. Ceramic glow plugs are said to shorten warm-up time at startup, so you can hold off on plugging in a block heater until the temperature dips below -30 degrees Celsius, reducing the likelihood of having to take that freezing early morning walk out to the driveway to plug in.The diesels raison d’être is to combine good fuel economy with high torque, and it delivers as advertised. It claims 277 horsepower, and 460 lb.-ft. of torque from just 1,500 rpm. Its currently the most powerful diesel engine you can get in a light-duty pickup. Fords 3.0-litre V6 turbo-diesel claims 250 horsepower and 440 lb.-ft of torque. The Chevy diesel is coupled to a 10-speed automatic, which is the same transmission youll find on the 6.2-litre direct-injection gasoline V8. There are eight Silverado trim levels to choose from, from the basic Work Truck to the fully frilly High Country. Two of those trims, the Custom and LT, are also dubbed Trail Boss, which ups the Silverados off-pavement capability by adding off-road equipment like a two-inch suspension lift, skid plates, Rancho shocks, a locking rear differential, and 18-inch aggressively treaded Goodyear Duratrac tires. You dont have to like diesels to appreciate the 3.0-litre engines power characteristics. It has huge torque almost from a stop, and its inline-six configuration makes it exceptionally smooth. It also sounds really good, with just enough of that diesel clatter to give the Silverado an unmistakably truck-ish attitude. The 10-speed automatic nears perfection, as it shifts smoothly and is always in the right gear. For 2020 Chevrolet will make available in the Silverado 1500 the 15 trailering camera views that were first shown in the 2020 Silverado HD. These adaptive camera views change depending on the front wheel angle, when turn signals are activated, and they include a transparent trailer view, which superimposes a rear-camera view from the back of the trailer into the image to allow you to see behind the trailer. Unfortunately we didnt have a chance to pull a trailer with the diesel-equipped Silverado, though its spec sheet is impressive, with a maximum towing capacity of 9,300 lb, and a maximum payload of 1,870 lb.Fuel economy numbers havent yet been released, but our hosts mapped a 40-km fuel-economy loop, which I drove in a two-wheel-drive LT crew cab. Driving efficiently while maintaining speed limits not crawling well below them the truck averaged an impressive 6.4 L/100 km. Driving normally on rural roads later yielded an average of 8.7 L/100 km, which is still impressive for a full-size pickup. The Duramax Diesel is available on LT, RST, LTZ and High Country models, but not on the base Work Truck or the two Trail Boss models. Ticking the Duramax box on the order form will add about $3,000 to $5,000 to the price depending on the trim. Diesel pricing starts at $47,730 for the 2WD LT double cab with standard bed, and goes up to just over $69,000 for the High Country crew cab

2019 Chevy Silverado, GMC Sierra net four-star overall crash rating

An NHTSA crash test of the 2020 Chevrolet Silverado pickupNHTSA The boffins at the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) have finished strapping their crash test dummies into General Motors’ new pickup trucks and have announced their findings: four stars overall. Yes, based on frontal and rollover tests or calculations, the agency gave the Silverado and Sierra four out of five stars. Side impacts garnered five stars, which lead to the overall rating of four stars. A perfect quintet would have made for top marks, by the way. In the tests, the NHTSA comes up with a frontal collision grade by combining the driver and passenger star ratings. The frontal barrier test simulates a head-on collision between two similar vehicles, each moving at 55 km/h. Evaluations are made to the adult-sized dummies in the front seats, determining the level of injury – if any – to the head, neck, chest and femur (that last one’s your leg, in case you fell asleep in high school biology). Side-impact tests are made up of two varieties. In the first, a 3,015-lb moving barrier represents another car crashing broadside into a standing vehicle at 62 km/h. The other test hauls the vehicle, angled at 75 degrees, into a 25-cm diameter pole at about thirty clicks to simulate sliding sideways into a telephone pole on a rainy day. Rollover is calculated using a bunch of maths that causes your author’s brain to hurt. Four stars isn’t bad, but neither is it the best-in-class. The 2019 Ford F-150 SuperCrew 44 received a five-star overall rating, comprised of five-star frontal and side crash grades, plus a four-star rollover risk rating. The new Ram 1500 hasn’t yet been rated by the

Chevrolet plugs the 6.2-litre V8 into Silverado Trail Boss and RST

2020 Chevrolet Silverado Custom Trail Boss Pickup customers looking for a Silverado Trail Boss with a mouth to match its trousers are now able to quench that thirst for power. Chevrolet is expanding the availability of its mighty 6.2-litre V8 engine, choosing to stuff it into the macho Trail Boss and natty four-wheel drive RST models. It’ll be appended to GM’s excellent 10-speed automatic transmission. For those keeping count, more than half of the Silverado trims can now be equipped with the large-displacement engine, which pumps out 420 horsepower and 460 lb.-ft. of torque. If that’s still not enough for you, be sure to check the option box for the Performance Upgrade Package which adds a performance air intake and cat-back performance exhaust system, raising output to 435 horsepower and 469 lb.-ft. of torque. ‘Murica! Buried in the middle of this information drop was the tidbit this newfound power will increase Silverado’s maximum towing capacity to a heady 13,400 pounds when properly equipped. Alert readers will note this is a class-leading figure. With the Detroit truck wars perpetually raging, especially in the area of towing supremacy, you can bet the house on Ford and Ram responding in kind very quickly. In a fit of practicality, Chevy chose to endow both the Custom Trail Boss and LT Trail Boss trims with the 6.2-litre option. In those trucks, all that power is paired with a 2-inch factory suspension lift, locking rear differential, Rancho shocks and Goodyear Duratrac rubber. We are planning a celebratory off-road soirée as we speak. With yesterday’s news of the ten-speed automatic making its way into the 5.3-litre V8 power team, the powertrain count for the 2020 Silverado rises to no less than seven: a base V6, the turbo four, a 5.3-litre V8 with either active or dynamic fuel management systems (the latter with a choice of two transmissions), the 6.2-litre V8, and an inline-six turbo-diesel. GM truck fans are spoilt for choice in 2020. While this information is not yet reflected on any of GM’s Canadian websites, we did reach out to the Product Communications Manager who confirmed Chevy will be offering the same packaging options in this
