Hopefully that gets ironed out before production. The truck also levels a plastic parking sign as it leaves the lot. Was that Elon showing off, teenager-style, or does he just not know how to drive his own truck? Chevy reveals 2021 Suburban and TahoeThe 2021 Suburban and Chevrolet Tahoe had their debut this week, revealing big changes inside and out, including new platforms. The solid rear axle and old chassis is gone, replaced by GM’s T1 platform, which has helped Chevy capitalize on the interior space the big families that own these things require. There’s more cargo space and improved access to the third row (the Tahoe expanded nearly seven inches in length, with three inches more legroom in the second row and 10 in the third). Check out our coverage of the debut, including photo galleries of both vehicles. The Hollywood Walk of Fame just gave the Chevy Suburban its own starThe more than 2,600 pink-terrazzo-stone-and-brass-stars that make up the Hollywood Walk of Fame have been honouring Tinseltown’s most-talented for decades. Meryl Streep, Pierce Brosnan, Bryan Adams and Harrison Ford (he’s got two) have all been immortalized in stone along the 2.1-km strip that runs east to west along Hollywood Boulevard. This week, a new star stone was unveiled: one for the Chevrolet Suburban. The SUV has appeared in at least one movie per year since 1960. There are other non-humans that have made the Walk, including the LAPD, the Dodgers, even Victoria’s Secret, but Chevy is the first-ever vehicle to make the cut. French man runs out of gas while evading policeIf you’re ever planning to ditch a police officer, make sure you’ve got enough gas for the chase. A French man tried to ditch the fuzz rather than face up to a speeding ticket, but instead of evading the law, he wound up losing his license for the next six months. The officer had clocked the driver, who was behind the wheel of a Mercedes-AMG C63, going 206 km/h in a 130-km/h zone, and as he was about to issue him a “red card,” the driver fled. The pursuit continued, but not for long: the Mercedes drained its fuel tank and the cops found the driver sitting in the back seat, claiming he’d been left behind by a different driver. Hm, ‘A’ for effort.Shelby F-150 Super Snake will make 770 horsepowerMost concepts don’t go beyond just that, the concept stage, remaining cool in theory, but not really made for real life. Earlier this year in Vegas at SEMA, the world laid eyes on the Shelby F-150 Super Snake Sport concept truck for the first time, and following the public’s overwhelming positive reaction, it’s been given the green light for production. Not only that, but the automaker announced 250 of the 2020 models (there are two powertrains — a 395-horsepower naturally aspirated V8 and a 770-horsepower supercharged V8) will be built for both the U.S. market as well as Canada. CHEVROLET SUBURBAN RECOGNIZED BY FILM INDUSTRY, GETS HOLLYWOOD STAR.Chevrolet The Chevrolet Suburban SUV has just earned itself a major award for its work not on the pavement, but on the silver screen.Usually its humans who get their names shown off on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, but its impossible not to recognize the contribution Chevys carry-all hauler has made to the film industry. When a convoy of black Suburbans appears on screen, you know thats not the time to leave your seat to buy popcorn, points out Dennis McCarthy, Hollywood picture car coordinator. His dossier includes big-budget films like The Avengers, Black Panther, and a few Fast and Furious installments. The Suburban first debuted on screen in 1952, and since then its appeared in over 1,750 TV shows and films. Since 1956, a Suburban has been in at least one TV show per year, and at least one film per year since 1960.The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce awarded the honor to the Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban nameplates, though the star only names the Suburban. More than its role in films, the Suburban also gets recognition for having the longest-running vehicle nameplate in history, dating all the way back to 1935.The nameplate will continue for the foreseeable future, with an all-new version (along with a new Tahoe) to be unveiled soon, perhaps with independent rear

This guy built a working ‘Star Wars’ land speeder in his garage
YouTuber colinfurze has taken Star Wars fandom to the next level by building a full-sized replica of the land speeder Luke Skywalker drives in A New Hope.Showcasing some old-school metal-forming techniques used by coachbuilders, Colin is able to bring a small model of the iconic craft up to 1:1 scale. In fact, he uses the toy speedster replica to get the real things proportions and details right. The body sits atop a stripped-down golf cart, which he bought on eBay for 1,300 pounds (about $2,200). In fact, most of the parts used for the build were sourced from eBay, which sponsored the build. The final product is incredible, and the detail Colin managed to translate into the full-sized replica is immense, right down to the exposed engine cover and the interior. Colin doesnt mention how long it took to build the land speeder, but were guessing it was more than a few days. According to Colin, there have been other fibreglass reproductions, but this is likely the first steel speeder replica ever made. This isnt the first Star Wars build hes done, either; previous projects include an AT-AT tree house of sorts; and Darth Vaders TIE fighter. However, this is the first project hes done that actually moves, and can be driven. The channel is not limited to Star Wars stuff; hes also built a jet-powered go-kart, a hoverbike and a hot tub BMW.Still to come from the YouTuber is a video of the vehicle being driven, and he also says that it will eventually get a paint

This Porsche X Lucasfilm starship will get you pumped for the new ‘Star Wars’ film
The Porsche Taycan had an Imperial escort at its recent debut in Singapore, rolling along the black carpet beside a squad of stormtroopers. In fact, Porsche built an entire “spaceport” in collaboration with designers at Lucasfilm for the event, which also hyped the upcoming film Star Wars: Rise of Skywalker. And while those of us in the Western world have already seen the Taycan, we hadn’t laid eyes on the sketches of the spacecraft also co-designed by Porsche and the Star Wars team, presented at the event. The starship combines Porsche and Star Wars design elements for a piece of fantasy machinery that, though it probably wont appear in any actual Star Wars movies, looks like something a young Han Solo would totally enjoy hijacking. Its got bits reminiscent of the X-Wing, Y-Wing and U-Wing with touches of the Taycan.“Even though they do not seem to share many elements at first glance, both worlds have a similar design philosophy,” said Michael Mauer, Vice President Style Porsche at Porsche AG, in a press release. The close collaboration with the Star Wars design team inspires and fascinates us it was a pleasure to present the design process and some sketches together with Doug Chiang in Singapore. We are looking forward to finalizing the fantasy spaceship design within the next weeks. While they wait for said promised final product, super-fans of Porsche, Star Wars or both can nerd out at the Wired microsite dedicated to the build process, which includes videos, insights and even more sketches of the

New Land Rover Defender to star in 25th James Bond film
Land Rover has confirmed that the new Defender will have a starring role in the next James Bond film. The latest instalment in the iconic secret agent series, No Time to Die, will be released in the UK on April 3 2020, and will feature the reborn off-roader taking part in a traditional car chase sequence. The exact nature of the Defender’s role is yet to be confirmed, but Land Rover claims the production’s stunt team have driven it in “the most extreme off-road conditions, demonstrating its unstoppable nature”. A video clip released by the firm shows a group of Defenders being driven at speed on challenging off-road terrain and jumping high into the air, with one clip showing the car seemingly rolling onto its side. The Defender selected for the film is the mid-sized 110 variant, which will arrive in UK dealerships ahead of the shorter 90 and longer 130. It has been specified in range-topping X trim, and equipped with optional equipment including darkened skid plans, 20in black alloy wheels and heavy-duty off-road tyres. Speculation that the Defender could appear in No Time to Die was fuelled by spy shots of the model on set in August, a month before it was officially unveiled at the Frankfurt motor show. The SUV will appear alongside Aston Martin’s upcoming Valhalla hypercar, which was confirmed as the hero car in June. The mid-engined hybrid is the latest in a long line of Aston models to feature in Bond films, following past appearances from the firm’s DB5, DBS, Vanquish, V8 Vantage and one-off DB10 models. Land Rover has also confirmed that its Range Rover Sport SVR will appear in the new film, alongside a selection of historic models including the Series III and Range Rover

Updated: 2019 Tokyo motor show preview – the star cars
Every edition of the biennial Tokyo motor show explores a different facet of Japan’s unique automotive industry. Some put an unabashed focus on performance while others place technology front and centre. What never changes is that the event is dominated by Japanese carmakers, you won’t hear much from European, American and other Asian brands, and the companies that display cars in Japan’s capital are on a bold quest to show their wild side. This is their chance to shine on their home turf. The 2019 Tokyo motor show opening its doors on October 24 will, somewhat unsurprisingly, highlight electrification. Most of the production and concept cars scheduled to break cover during the event will incorporate some degree of electrification, whether it’s mild hybrid technology or a battery-powered drivetrain. Here are the cars we expect to see in the Big Sight convention centre, though keep in mind carmakers often announce new models days, hours and minutes before the start of the show. Honda 2020 Jazz The next-generation Honda Jazz (known as the Fit in some markets) will exclusively be available with petrol-electric hybrid powertrains. Honda previously explained it developed a more compact version of the twin-motor i-MMD hybrid technology that equips the CR-V to use in smaller cars. While additional details remain few and far between, spy shots show a front end that falls in line with Honda’s current design language and familiar proportions. Jazz sales will begin in early 2020. Although it has historically lagged behind its rivals, it’s a hugely important model because it’s Honda’s best-seller in the UK. Lexus Electric car concept The concept Lexus will introduce in Tokyo will take it into the electric car segment for the first time. It’s a small, city-friendly model with a tall roof that clears up a generous amount of cabin space. Screens positioned on either side of the steering wheel display the infotainment system and the model relies on innovative in-wheel electric motors for power. While it will be presented as a simple design study, Lexus strongly hinted at least some parts of it will reach production in the coming years. “We feel that our future could resemble this design,” Lexus vice-president Koji Sato told Autocar. Mazda 2020 production EV Mazda’s Wankel rotary engine will make a long-awaited comeback in Tokyo but don’t look for a follow-up to the RX-8 on the show floor. It will perform range-extending duties in the company’s first series-produced electric car. We haven’t seen it yet, the test mules are all disguised as CX-30s, but we know it will arrive as a standalone model rather than as a battery-powered variant of an existing nameplate. It will be an SUV with a 35.5kWh lithium-ion battery pack that zaps a 140bhp motor into motion. Mitsubishi MI-Tech Concept Mitsubishi’s Tokyo-bound concept will primarily serve as a preview of its next plug-in hybrid drivetrain, which swaps the traditional combustion engine for a gas turbine generator. The company pointed out it made the powertrain smaller and lighter than the one currently found in the Outlander in order to electrify more compact models like the Eclipse Cross. A selection of preview images show the technology will be showcased in a futuristic-looking SUV with externally-mounted speakers and carbonfibre inserts. Expect the powertrain, not the concept, to reach showrooms in the coming years. Nissan IMk concept As with most Japanese kei cars, Nissan’s new IMk concept is tall, boxy and geared towards urban mobility, but, in a break from convention, sits atop an all-new EV platform and showcases the firm’s plans for the future of small cars. The concept builds upon Nissan’s Intelligent Mobility programme with a lounge-style interior and lack of physical controls, and early suggestions are that it could be sold globally. Subaru 2020 Levorg The next generation of Subaru’s Levorg estate will arrive with a more streamlined design and an array of electronic driving aids. The company’s teaser video noted we’re “in an era where autonomous driving technology is widely spreading” so it’s reasonable to assume the scope of its EyeSight suite of driver assistance features will be expanded. At the other end of the spectrum, Subaru will send off the 20-year old EJ20 flat-four engine with a commemorative WRX STI limited to 555 examples. Suzuki Waku Suzuki’s big themes for Tokyo are mobility and personality, as embodied by its retro-styled show star – the Waku. An ultra compact plug-in hybrid, the Waku features a number of design elements that can be swapped out according to personal preference, and is intended for families to “share fun and excitement”. Hanare The Hanare, taking its name from the Japanese for a small dwelling attached to a house, is Suzuki’s take on the autonomous shuttle. As with the Waku, it blends futuristic technology with 1960s-style design elements, and is said to be fully

Mitsubishi’s Tokyo show star is roofless SUV with four electric motors
Mitsubishi will reveal a new compact SUV concept with a range-extending EV tech at next month’s Tokyo motor show. The MI-Tech Concept, first confirmed last month, is previewed again in another image released by the firm. It shows the model is a two-seater, lacking doors and a roof, so it’s unlikely to preview a close-to-production model. However, its intent is to preview a new generation of plug-in hybrid powertrains to be used on SUV models smaller than the Outlander. Instead of the traditional combustion engine, Mitsubishi has deployed a gas turbine engine-generator, allowing use of pure EV and series hybrid drive modes. The hybrid technology will be smaller and lighter than Mitsubishi’s current plug-in hybrid system, which it pioneered first on the Outlander PHEV. It will be four-wheel drive, with two electric motors on each axle for for greater off-road control and precise handling, the brand claims. It’s also claimed to offer both improved efficiency in urban environments. Mitsubishi has not released any further technical details of the new hybrid system, which will join the larger one it already has in its range on the Outlander. That current plug-in hybrid tech mixes a 2.4-litre petrol engine with a 13.8kWh battery and twin electric motors. A replacement for the Outlander was previewed at the Geneva motor show in March with a concept called Engelberg Tourer that continued with a 2.4-litre petrol engine but now mated to a larger 20kWh battery. The concept car’s downsized plug-in hybrid technology could therefore be intended for the Eclipse Cross, either in this generation or the next. Mitsubishi sources confirmed to Autocar earlier this year that the Eclipse Cross would be offered with plug-in hybrid technology in the future. Mitsubishi sources also confirmed to Autocar that it would look to move its three SUV models – ASX, Eclipse Cross and Outlander – further apart in size. The ASX is set to be offered with an all-electric drivetrain in its next generation, rather than hybrid technology. The 2019 Tokyo concept will follow a 2017 concept at the same show, called e-Evolution. The model offered visual clues to the next ASX, but more pertinently was an early indication of what the famous Evo could turn into – a high-performance electric compact SUV – should Mitsubishi decide to revive it early in the next decade as has long been

BTCC 2019: Silverstone double for Toyota star Ingram
Toyota Corolla driver Tom Ingram took a pair of Kwik Fit British Touring Car Championship victories in the penultimate race weekend at Silverstone, while BMW ace Colin Turkington’s charge through the field to second place in race two helped him extend his points lead. Jack Goff also left the Northamptonshire circuit a winner, securing Team Hard’s first BTCC victory in the reverse grid final race in his Volkswagen CC. Double BTCC champion Jason Plato had claimed pole position in his Power Maxed Racing Vauxhall Astra, and led the first race early on in difficult conditions. But Team Toyota GB driver Ingram soon closed in, and claimed the lead at Luffield with a paint-trading move on lap four He pulled away to take a clear win from Plato and BTC Racing Honda Civic Type R pair Chris Smiley and Josh Cook. Andrew Jordan finished tenth in his WSR-run BMW 3 Series, while his team-mare and title rival Turkington could only manage 14th. Works Civic Type-R driver Dan Cammish, also in with a shot at the title, was 11th. Ingram won again in race two, despite dropping back to second behind Tom Oliphant (BMW 330i M Sport) after further contact with Plato at the start. A safety car bunched the field, and it began to rain shortly before racing resumed. Oliphant was the first man to reach the wet track at Copse on the restart, sliding wide and falling down the order, and gifting Ingram a lead he held until the race was stopped early as the rain worsened. Turkingon thrived in the rain, charging from 14th on the grid to second to build his points lead. Cammish was third ahead of Plato and Cook. The final race was also affected by the rain, with the field starting on dry Dunlop tyres only to find conditions worsening. Cook and Cammish led the way early on, but a mid-race safety car provided a golden opportunity for some runners to gamble on wet tyres. Goff and Aiden Moffatt (Infiniti Q50) both gambled early, and stormed through the pack. Their battle for victory was decided when Moffatt spun, although he still finished second. Matt Neal (Civic Type R) took third, ahead of Oliphant. Turkington was seventh, while Cammish could only muster 12th. That means Turkington leads Cammish by 16 points heading to the Brands Hatch season finale on 13 October, with Jordan a further point

Daniel Ricciardo: one-on-one with F1 star ahead of British GP
Ahead of next weekend’s British Grand Prix at Silverstone, a number of drivers on the grid found themselves together in rather more relaxed circumstances at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. It’s one of the few opportunities for today’s Formula 1 giants to drive the older crop of racing models, in the public eye, on a circuit alongside each other. This year, Daniel Ricciardo, fresh into his contract at Renault, had a chance to drive everything (in anger) from the firm’s hardcore new Mégane Trophy-R to the race-winning 2012 Renault-powered E20 F1 car. In between his time at the wheel and being physically mobbed by fans of all ages, Autocar grabbed five minutes with Ricciardo to talk shop. How are you feeling about tackling the hillclimb, in the rain, in a car you’re not that familiar with (the 2012 F1 car)? “It’s actually easier now! I’d probably be more nervous if it was dry as I was going to put pressure on myself – I was tempted to scare myself a bit and go all out, so it’s probably safer this way.” It’s been a less-than-perfect season so far for Renault. Are you now thinking ahead to 2020, or do you have an idea of how to improve things now? “I have not thought one bit about 2020. The season for me still feels like it’s starting – I know we’ve done a lot of races now, but there’s still so much more for me and the team to deliver. To already think next year seems premature. “We’ve definitely got an idea of what we need to be improving; unfortunately, when we tried to address those things with the upgrade in France, it didn’t seem to tackle all of them. We know what we’ve gotta do. Myself and Nico (Hülkenberg) are giving the same feedback on where we feel the car can be stronger and where the weaknesses lie. I think we’ve pinpointed it but executing it is taking a bit of time.” Are you looking forward to Silverstone this weekend? “I really like Silverstone – hopefully it’s not this weather. I don’t think I’ve actually turned a lap in the Renault F1 car in the rain yet. But Silverstone’s cool, I love the atmosphere. It’s a high-speed circuit so you really feel the downforce – that and Suzuki, those are the two tracks where you feel the aero most. And it’s like a festival atmosphere: rain, hail or shine, everyone seems to show up.” This year is your eighth in F1. Are you still in love with the sport despite everything? “Absolutely. Like everything you have your days – especially in the last year (at Red Bull) some days I did hate it – but I do love it I’m still very motivated and optimistic. That hasn’t wavered.” Has there been any thoughts at all about what’s next for you? “I’m just thinking about the now. A few years ago, I thought it would be cool to try some other races, but now I think the more involved I get in F1, the more I want out of it. I’m still yet to achieve ultimately what I want, which is a world title, so I’m going to put all my effort into that and I don’t really want to be sidetracked by anything else. I’m all in on it, and hopefully it works out.” Are you getting involved in the decision-making around the 2021 rule changes? “Us drivers are definitely trying to have an input and I think we are now – the most that we’ve been together in a long time. I think it’s grown the last few years. It used to be quite separated; in the last three years, thanks to the GPDA (Grand Prix Drivers’ Association) and all that, it’s got a lot better. “I don’t think it’s gonna turn on its head, but I think we can definitely make some improvements. We all want the same thing, we want to be able to race harder and closer, and hopefully we can find a way.” So you’re happy with the direction Liberty Media is taking? “They’re certainly open-minded – I think that helps. They’re happy to listen to us more than anything. They’re trying to understand the direction as well – it’s all new for them.” What about away from the track. Do you get any time to appreciate motoring and are you still a car nut? “I’m pretty up and down with it. Some weekends off, I love to be far, far removed from racing – I don’t want to see a car. But then other times – I went for a drive last week and it was great. Sometimes I really just want to detach myself from it. “I’ve got a couple of cars but I don’t have a massive collection. I do appreciate cars, and I’m starting to appreciate older cars – I just turned 30 so maybe that’s why.” Have you ever been asked to get involved in your own special edition of a production car? I’m thinking like Vettel and his Infiniti FX… “I guess if the right opportunity came up would be cool. I haven’t really thought about it or had it discussed with me, but if something was put in front of me that I really like, I would definitely be open to

Lee Iacocca, star CEO who led Ford, saved Chrysler, has died
Chrysler president Lee Iacocca unveils the companys new minivan in 1983, opening a new automotive segment.FCA Lee Iacocca, the U.S. auto executive and television pitchman whose feel for consumers changing tastes helped produce the Ford Mustang and the Chrysler minivan and made him one of the first celebrity CEOs, has died. He was 94.His passing was confirmed by Fiat Chrysler Automobiles in a statement. The death was caused by complications from Parkinsons disease, the Washington Post said, citing his daughter Lia Iacocca Assad.Studied in business schools, emulated by a generation of executives, Iacocca was a star salesman for cars and for himself, spurring periodic talk of running for president. (He never did.)Lee Iacocca was truly bigger than life and he left an indelible mark on Ford, the auto industry and our country, Ford Executive Chairman Bill Ford said in a statement. I will always appreciate how encouraging he was to me at the beginning of my career. He was one of a kind and will be dearly missed.Iacocca arguably ushered in the era of the celebrity auto executive, with others such as Sergio Marchionne, Elon Musk and Carlos Ghosn following in his footsteps. Marchionne died last year, and Ghosn fell from grace in November after his arrest for financial crimes related to his tenure at Nissan.I didnt always agree with him, but he was a brilliant visionary, said Bob Lutz, former Chrysler president, who worked closely with Iaccoca and clashed with him at times. He was flawed in many ways but when I rated the CEOs I knew, he came out on top.Iacocca was no miracle worker, however, and the American auto industrys struggles didnt end with his tenure. Japanese carmakers saw their U.S. market share grow 10-fold, to about 30 per cent, during his 23 years leading two of Americas Big Three automakers. Chrysler, which averted collapse in 1980 in what may have been Iacoccas crowning achievement, was buffeted by the financial crisis and recession of 2008, filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in April 2009.It pains me to see my old company, which has meant so much to America, on the ropes, Iacocca told Newsweek at the time. The company emerged as Chrysler Group LLC, majority-owned by Italys Fiat. It is now named Fiat Chrysler Automobiles.Iacocca first came to prominence when, at 36, he was named general manager of the Ford division in 1960. With a group of like-minded young executives, he formed what became known as the Fairlane Committee named for the inn where they met for brainstorming dinners to discuss how to design a low-cost, sporty car that would entice younger, more affluent families to become two-car households. It had to be a sports car but more than a sports car, Iacocca wrote in his memoir. We wanted to develop a car that you could drive to the country club on Friday night, to the drag strip on Saturday and to church on Sunday. The Mustang, introduced at the 1964 Worlds Fair in New York, was an unqualified hit.Iacocca became president of Dearborn, Michigan-based Ford in 1970. At 46, he was second in command only to Chairman Henry Ford II, grandson of the companys founder and seven years his senior. During Iacoccas eight-year tenure, the two men sparred over topics big and small, from car design to perceived personal slights.Executive-suite reorganizations in 1977 and 1978 resulted in de facto demotions of Iacocca and led to a showdown meeting on July 13, 1978, at which Ford ordered him to resign. His last day on the payroll was Oct. 15, his 54th birthday. He had been at Ford for 32 years. Two weeks after his ouster from Ford, Iacocca took over as president and chief operating officer at Chrysler, brought on by Chairman John Riccardo just as the company reported a quarterly loss of US$160 million, its largest at the time.I really didnt want to retire at 54, Iacocca said at a press conference. I really didnt want to be banished from the auto scene. His 14 years at Chrysler gave Iacocca the chance to pursue initiatives that had met resistance at Ford. These included the fuel-efficient K-series Dodge Aries and Plymouth Reliant models as well as the first U.S.-produced minivan, introduced in 1983 as the Plymouth Voyager and Dodge Caravan. He steered Chryslers 1987 acquisition of American Motors Corp., with its Jeep franchise.First, though, Iacocca had to save Chrysler from looming bankruptcy. After becoming chairman and CEO in September 1979, he led a cost-cutting program that closed plants and slashed tens of thousands of jobs. He also sealed Chryslers deal with Congress and President Jimmy Carters administration for US$1.5 billion in federal loan guarantees. In 1983, seven years earlier than required, Chrysler finished repaying the $1.2 billion in government-backed loans it had used.As much as for any of his corporate decisions, Iacocca became known as the straight-talking, patriotic pitchman in Chryslers television commercials, produced by New York-based firm Kenyon Eckhardt Inc., in which he vouched
