Volvo could expand its range with larger and smaller SUVs

2019 Volvo XC90Handout / Volvo Volvo could be planning even more SUV models, based on the success of its utility vehicles around the world specifically, it may look to fill its lineup with trucks both larger and smaller than anything in its range today. We are not excluding the idea of additions to the companys SUV range, CEO Hakkan Samuelsson said in talks with Auto Express, before adding that when it comes to Volvos crossovers, pundits should not exclude the idea that there might be a bigger one, but maybe also a smaller one.According to a story from Swedish outlet Teknikens Varld, the Swedish brand has known its needed a vehicle larger than the XC90 to compete with other brands offerings since 2002, but a lack of funds from former parent company Ford stalled development. However, since Volvo was bought by Geely in 2010, the brand has reopened the idea of creating an XC100 based on the SPA 2 archicecture, internally called Project V616.(When broken down, the codename reveals the project is part of class 6, for Volvos largest cars; 1 for a first-generation model; and another 6 to denote an SUV.)The same Swedish outlet says the XC100 will arrive in 2022 or 2023; that it will be five inches longer in wheelbase than the current XC90; and that it will sit an inch taller. As for the SUV smaller than the XC40? It hasnt been totally fleshed out yet, but its possible it will borrow technology from Geely, and might only be leased, not sold. It will also likely feature an electric powertrain, as the XC40 is already rumoured to receive

Genesis to introduce a brace of SUVs in the next two years

If theres one thing sorely missing from the Genesis brands showrooms, its a crossover or three. In a market thirsty for tall wagons with traction at all four corners, the Genesis cupboard is more than a little bare.On todays sales call reporting on monthly earnings, we learned this oversight is about to be rectified with a pair of crossover vehicles.COO Erwin Raphael told assembled reporters that, in addition to the G80-based rig set to debut in about a years time, a compact crossover built on the excellent G70 platform will appear.Details are slim but its a safe bet the small SUV will be available with at least the 2.0-litre turbo-four found in the sedan. Plugging the hawt 3.3-litre twin-turbo six would shake up the segment in a big way. Dont expect the G70s stickshift transmission, though. As for the all-wheel-drive crossover already announced, we know it will be called the GV80 and share most of its platform details with the G80 sedan. That machine is available with a 3.8-litre V6, that 3.3-litre twin-turbo or a 5.0-litre V8, by the way. A hybrid version wouldnt be totally surprising, either.Genesis is taking the tried-and-true alphanumeric approach to naming its vehicles, appending a G to their sedans and a GV to their forthcoming crossovers. One assumes they couldnt use GX thanks to some sort of copyright claim by Lexus.South of the border, a market which drives many product decisions in this country, Genesis dealers have been crying out for more product after a production blip earlier this year. Despite having nary a crossover to offer, the brand doubled its sales last month compared to the same timeframe twelve months ago. Once these crossovers hit, expect that number to continue an upward

James Ruppert: why petrol compact SUVs rule the classifieds

I do love stats which tell a story, and some I’ve come across recently are rather relevant to what is happening in the current used car market. According to some figures from Indicata, petrol engines dominated the list of the fastest-selling used cars for April, accounting for 70% of the top 10 compiled by Indicata.  So yes, petrol is the fuel that the used car buyer truly understands – and they remain terrified of diesel. Forecourt sales staff will tell you of the reluctance they encounter when it comes to oil-burners. The models at the top end of the fast sellers list include the Hyundai Tucson, Kia Sportage, Ford Ecosport and Vauxhall Mokka. The used car market is therefore petrol SUV-shaped at the moment, in particular the dinkier, more compact ones.  That inspired me to go super-cheap-car shopping for something similar, but rather more Banger. I may be odd but I’m always looking at Land Rover Freelanders, not least because I can’t help thinking that the new Defender should look like this, but probably won’t. Just £595 gets me into a 2003 1.8 Maasai with an MOT and recent service to its name. A lovely looking three-door.  But Land Rover’s marginal reliability is a worry for some, including me, and that might send me into the welcoming, alt-Defender style of a Mitsubishi Shogun Pinin GDi Equippe. It too is from 2003 and is up for just £595. Five doors, spare wheel on the tailgate. Fantastic.  Then there’s an old-school Kia Sportage 2.0 XSE, which actually does not look so cool now. Just old. This 2002 with less than 80,000 miles is – guess what? – £595, and the dealer was selling it with a year’s breakdown cover. Then again, there’s a Honda HR-V 1.6, which is way cooler than the latest one. This 2000 example had covered just over 100,000 miles and seemed quite tidy, although they can cause trouble if less than pristine. Quite an old vehicle now but I’d still take the risk.  A bright spot in the stats is the BMW 3 Series, which is the only saloon in the top ten. Obviously that is the sort of transport I’d buy, and the bigger the engine the better.  There are some cheap 3 Series around. I liked the look of a £500 318i, but really it was a 2001 330i SE saloon with 99,000 miles, 12 months’ MOT, and all for £1900 all in. The gearbox is automatic, which may put some people off, but really, a light blue BMW saloon with a big engine is just about perfect.  So there we have it: the fastest-selling used cars are petrols – usually with faux off-road bodies on top. We can save the day, though, by turning towards six-cylinder Bavarian saloons. There is hope. What we almost bought this week Blink and you’ll have missed this large family car when it was new (2005-’07). Shame, since the model was well built and reliable. We found a tidy 2006-reg Eleganza with 57,000 miles on the clock and a new timing belt on the engine. In addition to this 1.8 petrol there was a 2.2 and a trio of diesels, including a 2.4 making a useful 200bhp.  Tales from Ruppert’s garage Innocenti Mini, mileage – 6759: Just to let you know that the Italian Mini I bought earlier this year still exists. It failed its MOT in fairly spectacular fashion: the brakes weren’t very good and, of course, there was rust. Loads of it. There’s not enough room here to detail what’s been happening and I may well go away and write a book about the whole experience. For the moment, though, I’ll just stick to the MOT, which it didn’t even need to be subjected to – and that should scare every road user out there. Reader’s ride Dave Bardsley is back: “My previous Bangernomics Kia Sportage failed its MOT and needed a sum in the hundreds and starting with a ‘3’ to pass, so I bought this 2007 Hyundai Tucson for £1795. It’s got 88,000 miles on it and an MOT until next February, so I’m looking forward to some hassle-free motoring. It’s a lot of metal and gizmos for the money, all electric and a split tailgate. It’s even got a remote-controlled radio.” Readers’ questions Question: I’m considering buying my next car at auction. Are there any guarantees or recourse if I buy a dud? Jason Townes, Epsom, Surrey Answer: Choose your auction carefully. Larger operators such as BCA have detailed terms and conditions that outline what you should expect and offer indemnities should a vehicle be incorrectly described. They also guarantee that good title is transferred to the buyer. If a vehicle’s mileage is warranted, then that should be correct. BCA also offers the Assured scheme, an independent multi-point check by the AA to ensure buyers have accurate information relating to the mechanical condition. Remember that it is up to you to check the car’s overall visible condition prior to the sale, as these parts of the car are always sold ‘as seen’. John Evans Question: My Mazda MX-5’s windscreen needs replacing but I’m worried about the accuracy of the driver assist systems, which use sensors mounted on the screen. Transport Canada investigating 250,000 GM trucks, SUVs over braking issue

2017 Chevrolet SilveradoChevrolet Transport Canada opened a probe June into 249,700 General Motors trucks and SUVs over whether the vehicles power brake systems could deteriorate prematurely, causing issues for owners and leading to incident or injury. The safety regulator is specifically looking at GMC Yukon, Cadillac Escalade and Chevrolet Suburban and Tahoe SUVs from model years 2015 through 2017; as well as light-duty Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra trucks from model years 2014 through 2017.The move follows the opening of an investigation last November by the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) over the same issue. The NHTSA had received 487 reports from drivers of some GM trucks and SUVS alleging their vehicles required hard brake pedal effort to stop adequately, and that stopping distances were extended anyway. This was attributed to a deterioration of the engine-driven brake assist vacuum pump, reports Reuters. That group counted nine incidents of collisions related to poor braking; and two injuries among those reports, and launched its own probe into about 2.73 million SUVs and pickups from model years 2014 through

Best lease deals of the week: Family SUVs

Leasing can be an affordable, practical route into having your own private car, but it’s not always easy to tell the good deals from the duds.  The experts at our sister magazine What Car? work hard to find you the best pay-monthly schemes, taking into account mileage allowance, montly outlay, contract length and initial deposit. We’ll be bringing you the best deals they find from a different segment each week. This week, it’s family SUVs:  1. Audi Q3 35 TFSI Sport £1860 deposit, £310 per month, 48 months, 8000 miles per year With sliding rear seats and a multi-level boot floor, the Q3 is spacious and practical, and there’s an off-road mode for the adventurous. The only question is what do Audi’s new engine numbers mean? 2. BMW X1 sDrive 2.0i M Sport Auto £1777 deposit, £296 per month, 36 months, 8000 miles per year Fun to drive and with a practical, high-quality interior, the X1 impresses on first acquaintance. Refinement could be better and performance trails the class best but it handles well, even if the steering lacks feel. 3. Mercedes-Benz GLA 180 Urban Edition £1612 deposit, £269 per month, 48 months, 10,000 miles per year The GLA is due to be replaced but this current one still looks good. Diesel-engined versions are strong and cheap to run, the dashboard looks great and there’s plenty of kit but rivals are cheaper and more spacious. 4. Range Rover Evoque 2.0 D150 2WD  £1907 deposit, £318 per month, 48 months, 8000 miles per year The Evoque’s sensational looks have evolved from the original model and continue inside with a genuinely classy interior that is roomier than before, especially in the rear. The driving position is spot on, too. 5. Volvo XC40 1.5 T3 Momentum £1607 deposit, £268 per month, 36 months, 8000 miles per year Volvo’s compact SUV not only looks great but is good to drive, safe and practical. It’s a little noisy on the motorway and the rear seats aren’t as comfortable as some, but it’s a strong contender in a tough class. 6. Jaguar E-Pace 2.0D R-Dynamic £1768 deposit, £295 per month, 48 months, 8000 miles per year Great looks, a comfortable ride, good economy and that Jaguar badge will be enough to convince most buyers, but the E-Pace doesn’t handle quite as sharply as we’d like and some engines lack sparkle. BMW reveals 523bhp X5 M50i and X7 M50i SUVS

BMW has revealed new M Performance versions of its latest X5 and X7 SUVs ahead of their planned UK introduction during the final quarter of 2019. The two M50i-based SUVs both feature an updated version of BMW’s twin-turbo 4.4-litre V8 petrol engine, which produces 523bhp and 553lb ft, an increase of 67bhp and 74lb ft over the existing xDrive50i versions of both models. BMW has so far only issued a limited number of photos showing the car from the rear, and detail shots of the interior. The updated engine features a revised aluminium block that offers increased stiffness. To boost refinement, it also features pistons coated in graphite-impregnated resin and a damper incorporated in the crankshaft. The power is driven through an eight-speed torque converter-equipped eight-speed gearbox, which features bespoke electronic mapping including a launch control function. The latest entrants in the growing premium sports SUV class also feature a rear-biased xDrive all-wheel drive system with an electronic M Sport differential managed via the Dynamic Stability Control system. It is claimed to be able to transfer up to 100 per cent of drive to the rear wheels in certain driving conditions. No official weight figure has yet been revealed for the new range-topping X5 and X7 models, though BMW claims respective 0-62mph time of 4.1secs and 4.5secs respectively, as well as a limited top speed for both models of 155mph. That compares to 4.7secd and 5.4secs for the X5 xDrive50i and X7 xDrive50i. The machines also feature newly tuned suspension, with a double wishbone at the front and multi-link rear. It uses unique bushing, firmer springs and dampers, and rides on 20inch wheels as standard (21in and 22in wheels are available as options). The X5 M50i features an Adaptive M suspension featuring adaptive damping, while the X7 M50i rides on air suspension with variable ride height control. That suspension is an option on the X5. The boost in performance is accompanied by a retuned double wishbone (front) and multi-link (rear) suspension. It features unique bushings together with firmer springs and dampers and standard 20-inch wheels. In the case of the X5 M50i, it is allied to a so-called Adaptive M suspension featuring adaptive damping control, while the X7 M50i receives an air suspension with variable ride height control – a feature that is also available on the X5 M50i as an option. The brakes feature new two-piece compound steels discs disks with revised M division callipers. The X5 M50i and X7 M50i are distinguished from standard X5 and X7 model by a more heavily structured front bumper with larger cooling ducts, new sills underneath the doors and a revised rear bumper, among other subtle exterior design tweaks. Inside, the door sill plates feature an illuminated M50i logo, and there is an M-Sport steering wheel, gear lever and instruments, and sport seats.  The new models will top the existing line-ups for the two SUVs until the arrival of even more powerful X5 M and X7 M variants in 2020. UK pricing has yet to be

BMW adds M performance to the X5 and X7 SUVs

BMW is putting its M’ badge on a couple of big SUVs, following the trend the brand’s smaller X2, X3 and X4 trucks have picked up on. Right off the bat, you’ll notice the wheels on the new M50i-trim X5 are bigger: the X5 gets 20-inchers as standard, but can be optioned with the X7 M50i’s wheels, which are a massive set of 22-inch wheels wrapped in 275/40R22 tires in the front; and 315/35R22 tires in the rear. Both the X5 and X7 get an M Sport body kit, as well as a unique grille, fender vents and wheels finished in Cerium Grey. Powering both SUVs is the same engine from the new M850i, a 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 that makes 523 horsepower and 553 lb.-ft. of torque, an increase of 67 horsepower and 74 lb.-ft of torque over the standard -50i models. The big engine will help thrust the X5 M50i and X7 M50i to 96 km/h in just 4.1 and 4.5 seconds, respectively. To get all the power down, the seven-speed automatic transmission has been tweaked, and now features launch control. Both vehicles have had their suspensions played with, the X5 receiving standard adaptive dampers, with the option to upgrade to the air suspension standard on the X7. An electronic rear differential, M Sport brakes and an M Sport exhaust also add performance. The 2020 BMW X5 and X7 M50i will go on sale this fall; Canadian pricing and availability have not been

Honda slows Accord, Civic production as buyers shift to SUVs

2018 Honda AccordHandout / Honda Honda is slowing production of Accord and Civic cars as U.S. buyers continue to favour SUVs and trucks. The Japanese automaker said Thursday that it will temporarily idle a second-shift production line in August at its Marysville, Ohio, assembly plant, in part to prepare the factory to produce future electric vehicles. The shift is expected to resume production in several years. The line being shut down produces about 55,000 vehicles a year, most of which are Accord sedans, Honda said. In addition, some production of the CR-V small SUV in Marysville will go to a factory in Greensburg, Indiana, where production of the compact Civic will be reduced. While production is slowed in Marysville, Honda will update the plant’s manufacturing capability to prepare for new technology including electric vehicles, Honda said in a statement. There will be no layoffs, a company spokeswoman said, but Honda will offer voluntary buyouts to some employees The reduction also will affect production at engine and transmission plants in Ohio, Honda said. U.S. sales of the Accord this year are up 4.6% through March but fell nearly 10% last year. Civic sales are down nearly 5% so far this year to 78,185, according to Autodata Corp. They fell almost 14% last year. CR-V sales, however, are up 6.4% through March to 87,280. Trucks and SUVs have made up almost 70% of U.S. new vehicle sales this
