You’ve heard of Gymkhana (click here for a primer, if you haven’t) but how about Climbkhana? DC Shoes co-founder and professional rally driver Ken Block is a legend in the drifting communities for his Gymkhana series, which takes beefed-up cars through complex drift courses and creates viral videos about the whole thing. They’ve been at it for nearly a decade. Back in 2017, Block and his Hoonigans took their 1,400-horsepower 1965 Ford Mustang Hoonicorn RTR V2 to Pikes Peak to drift the climb and create the first Climbkhana video. After taking 2018 off, Block is back, this time behind the wheel of his 914-horsepower 1977 Ford F-150 (the one used in Gymkhana 10) tearing along the iconic Heaven’s Gate road that cuts up through Tianmen Mountain National Park. The tire-shredding truck gobbles up the most dangerous road in China’s 99 corners with a seemingly insatiable appetite. Footage shows aerial clips of the truck whipping around hairpin turns, doing donuts around a person in a panda costume riding a hoverboard (because China?) in-truck shots of Block smiling as he shifts down and spins the tires, and corners taken so accurately the back end of the vehicle brushes the barriers. Block caps the performance with a bunch more donuts at the top of the hill, set to the tune of Ozzy Osbourne’s “Over the Mountain.” Appropriate. What a job this guy has,

Tesla takes on Porsche at Nurburgring, possibly with new ‘Plaid’ powertrain
The Tesla Model 3 PerformanceHandout / Tesla First there was derision. Then mockery turned into admiration. Now a battle is unfolding between two of the most revered names in the automobile world, Porsche and Tesla. The venue of the showdown: Germanys Nurburgring, the race track considered the most challenging in the world. The circuit boasts 73 tight turns (Silverstone in the U.K. has 18), changing elevations and a brutal length of more than 20 kilometers (12.4 miles) winding through leafy forest, earning it the nickname Green Hell. Its here that Porsches new Taycan Turbo S set the record as the fastest four-door electric car last month, clocking in at 7 minutes and 42 seconds. The feat wasnt lost on a rival sitting thousands of miles away in California: Teslas Elon Musk. Always one to relish a good fight, Musk picked up the gauntlet and has dispatched a Model S to the German hinterland to reclaim the bragging rights as king of the electric sedan.Model S on Nürburgring next week Elon Musk (@elonmusk) September 5, 2019The car confrontation has all the ingredients of an epic battle between incubent and upstart, infused with social-media feeds that have energized die-hard fans on either side of the Atlantic wondering which of the two cars can shave those vital extra seconds off their lap time. Adding to the frenzy is former Formula One racing champion Nico Rosberg, who chimed in on Twitter to pilot the Tesla, an offer that Musk happily accepted.Musk has a lot riding on the challenge. After Porsche unveiled the Taycan Turbo and Turbo S as its first electric cars last week, Musk teased the brand for its turbo nomenclature, because a turbocharger is only found in a combustion engine. Following the initial ribbing, he found more charitable words in a later tweet, acknowledging that the Taycan does seem like a good car and that the Nurburgring track time is great. But Taycan does seem like a good car. Nürburgring track time is great. Elon Musk (@elonmusk) September 7, 2019The stakes are equally high for Porsche, which has watched Tesla turn itself into a veritable alternative for customers seeking a high-performance car but with an electric engine, an open flank that the Stuttgart-based manufacturer now hopes to protect with the Taycan.Musk posted on September 6 that a Model S would make an appearance at the track next week. Indeed, a modified Model S has been spotted testing on the Nurburgring Nordschleife, according to Car and Driver, which appeared to show the car on the track as part of a general driving session open to others. The model sported flared fenders and an enlarged opening at the front, probably for extra cooling. When exactly the car might attempt to break the Taycans record remains shrouded in mystery. Tesla did not respond to a request for comment on its plans for the Nurburgring.Bolstering Teslas case, the company tweeted on September 11 that a Model S with a new Plaid powertrain beat the record for the fastest four-door sedan at Laguna Seca, a race track near Monterey, California, even though the time hadnt been achieved during a competitive event and wasnt officiated by staff at the track.*~ Some personal news ~*We lapped Laguna Seca @WeatherTechRcwy in 1:36.555 during advanced RD testing of our Model S Plaid powertrain and chassis prototype(That’s a second faster than the record for a four-door sedan) pic.twitter.com/OriccK4KCZ Tesla (@Tesla) September 12, 2019Pushing the round below 10 minutes is the ambition of all Nurburgring daredevils. The track is open to both professional and amateur drivers, and the fastest time with a street-legal sports car was 6 minutes and 44 seconds, performed in a Porsche GT2 RS MR on October 25 last year, according to the circuits web site.Thats an average speed of 185 kilometers an hour for the 20.8-kilometer

China’s BAIC takes 5-per-cent stake in Daimler to boost partnership
The Mercedes-Benz Circle of Excellence holds events for members and offers preferred status at elite hotels. One of Germanys most storied industrial icons just became more Chinese.Daimler AGs Chinese partner, state-backed Beijing Automotive Group Co., is buying a 5-per-cent stake in the Mercedes-Benz maker, cementing a more than decade-long alliance of the auto manufacturers.Together with Daimlers top shareholder Zhejiang Geely Holding Group Co.s billionaire owner Li Shufu the transaction would take Chinese ownership in the worlds biggest luxury-car maker to almost 15 per cent. This step reinforces our successful partnership and is a signal of trust in the strategy and future potential of our company, Daimler Chief Executive Officer Ola Kallenius said.BAICs investment another sign of the fast-changing global car industry with deepening partnerships and deals with rivals. Margins at the core Mercedes-Benz cars division are expected to fall as low as 3 per cent this year, trailing typically lower-returning mass-market carmakers.About half of the stake being taken by BAIC, which is backed by Beijings municipal government, is via rights to acquire shares and the remainder via financial instruments, according to a statement. The 5-per-cent holding has a market value of about 2.5 billion euros (US$2.8 billion) as of Monday close.Another Chinese shareholder at one of Germanys automotive giants could stir concerns about influence in the country, while carmakers already battle a trade war that has left global shipments of cars at the mercy of tit-for-tat tariff measures. China and the U.S. are the two largest markets for Mercedes-Benz. BAICs transaction also raises the question of whether Daimler and BAIC may reorganize their joint venture in China after restrictions for foreign investors in the worlds largest auto market eased. For its part, BAIC views the purchase as a natural evolution of its relationship with Daimler. It has been our intention to strengthen our alliance with Daimler through an investment, said Heyi Xu, chairman of BAIC. This step reinforces our alignment with, and strong support for, Daimlers management and strategy.Daimler is exploring additional cooperation projects with Geely, former CEO Dieter Zetsche said at the companys annual general meeting in May and sought to allay concerns about potential conflicts with BAIC. His successor Kallenius said in January hes open to talk about more collaboration with industry peers and technology firms to share surging development cost.Since 2003, BAIC and Daimler have set up a number of cooperations in China, including the joint venture Beijing Benz Automotive Company that produces premium cars in the country, as well as separate entities that make vans and trucks. Daimler has held a 9.6-per-cent stake in the BAICs Hong Kong-listed unit, BAIC Motor Corp., since

VW ID R takes all-time Goodwood hillclimb record – with video
Volkswagen has smashed the outright hillclimb record at Goodwood Festival of Speed with the 671bhp ID R electric racer. Driver Romain Dumas initially took the record on the second day of the event, setting a time of 41.18 seconds in a practice session, before going even faster a day later with a 39.90 in the timed shootout. All the news from the 2019 Goodwood Festival of Speed The previous record for the Sussex course had stood since 1999, when Heidfeld set a time of 41.18 seconds at the wheel of McLaren MP4/13 F1 car – a pace so far ahead of anything else that Formula One cars were subsequently banned from making timed runs. With one day of the 2019 Festival remaining, there’s every chance Dumas will get another chance to go even faster, although a chance of rain may prevent further improvements. He joked after breaking the record for a second time, saying “if we stay one more week, it’s possible we could find a few more tenths.” The ID R came to Goodwood fresh from its record breaking efforts at the Nurburgring, where it set the fastest lap ever for an electric car with a time of 6min 05.336secs The 671bhp ID R broke the outright record at the Pikes Peak hill climb last year, but needed heavy modifications to cope with the 12.9-mile Nordschleife’s long straights and fast corners. They included a new F1-inspired aerodynamics package, which added a new rear wing, redesigned front splitter and drag reduction system (DRS) which, when deployed, reduces downforce by as much as 20%. Changes to the energy management system help the car reach its top speed faster, while using less energy from its twin lithium-ion battery packs. Driver Dumas, who has won the Nurburgring 24-hour race four times dethroned the Nio EP9 electric hypercar by more than 40 seconds. The EP9 set the previous record for fastest EV around the ‘Ring in 2017 with a time of 6:45.90. Volkswagen also teamed up with free-to-play racing simulator RaceRoom to let players digitally compete with its real-world record attempt. A virtual version of the ID R was created using data from the original car, with VW Motorsport engineers helping to create a realistic driving experience. “The ID. R’s mission to be the spearhead of the fully electric ID. product family from Volkswagen continues in full force,” Volkswagen’s Motorsport Director Sven Smeets, said. “Once again, this time in 2019, the ID. R will demonstrate the great potential of electric drive, combining emissions-free technology with true

News Roundup: Schwarzenegger masquerades as a used-car salesman, Chevy (maybe) cancels the Camaro, and Genesis takes on the EV market
Welcome to our weekly round-up of the biggest breaking stories on Driving.ca from this past week. Get caught up and ready to get on with the weekend, because it’s hard keeping pace in a digital traffic jam. Here’s what you missed while you were away.Watch Schwarzenegger annoy customers as a used-car salesmanIn film, Arnold Schwarzenegger’s characters usually use bicep strength or Gatling guns to impose their will. But in a new YouTube video, the former Governator relies upon his skills of annoyance to push customers at a used car lot toward electric vehicles. The bit, which appeared on the Austrian-American star’s YouTube page, was a plug for ElectricForAll.org, featuring Arnold as used car salesman overly keen for the gas-guzzling ways of old. Karma, baby! Vancouver driver gets new McLaren impounded minutes after driving it off the lotAh, don’t you just love stories like this, where the idiot driver gets his comeuppance almost immediately? A Vancouver driver recently took possession of a brand-new quarter-million-dollar McLaren 600LT and decided to test its limits on the drive home, accelerating to 161 km/h in a 90-km/h zone before being stopped by police. The $368 ticket probably won’t be such a problem for the obviously wealthy driver, but at least the reckless dummy won’t have his new ride for a week. J.D. Power ranks the best and worst car brands of the yearMarketing information services company J.D. Power has released its Initial Quality Study for 2019, which ranks car brands based on the number of issues experienced by new owners. At the bottom of the pile were British brands Jaguar and Land Rover, which managed to improve their scores from last year but not enough to inch past Mitsubishi, which was ranked third-worse. The top of the list, on the other hand, was dominated by South Korean marques, with Genesis, Kia and Hyundai taking the top three spots, respectively. The highest-ranking North American brand was Ford, which clinched fourth position despite slipping by a couple points from last year. Chevrolet might halt Camaro production after sixth gen Will the sixth-generation Camaro be the last? Rumours of the impending cancellation of the Chevrolet Camaro that started with “multiple sources within GM” speaking to Muscle Cars Trucks suggest so, though later we heard from other sources that the next gen was just “delayed until further notice.” The news has some Camaro fans experiencing deja-vu as the popular muscle car was discontinued once already, back in 2002, only to be resurrected in 2009. GM has neither confirmed nor denied the rumours, telling Motor Authority, “While we will not engage in speculation, we will remind you of our recently announced updates coming to the Camaro lineup this fall.” So we wait…Opinion: The “carpocalypse” is pure BS! Motor Mouth David Booth touched a nerve this week by asking a simple question: “When did we get so f-ing stupid?” OK, so it’s not so difficult to see why some might be offended. In this week’s editorial, our unabashed columnist takes on the idea of the “carpocalypse,” which predicts the forthcoming demise of the auto industry. Despite increased messaging from car sharing companies like Lyft and Car2Go claiming drivership is down – as well plenty of anecdotal evidence suggesting Millennials aren’t buying the same way their parents did – Booth insists it’s all a bunch of hogwash. Do you agree? Join the conversation by commenting on his latest Motor Mouth column. Will another 400 Series Highway improve Toronto traffic conditions? The powers that be in the GTA are studying the idea of connecting Highway 400 in Vaughan to Highway 407 in Milton with another major route in order to reduce congestion. Demand to improve commute times, which rose 8 per cent since 2013, is strong, but as Driving’s Steven Bochenek points out, adding more roads doesn’t necessarily lead to less traffic. In fact, according to a well-researched concept called “induced demand,” more roads often simply lead to more drivers. Well, there’s always the GO Train, I guess. Genesis sets sights on the electric market with announcement of upcoming EVNew kid on the block Genesis has been making waves for a few years now, with its internationally acclaimed vehicles displacing demand for the luxury marquees that have dominated the industry for what seems like forever. BMW and Mercedes-Benz have felt the Genesis pinch, and soon, according to reports from Australia’s Drive, so will Tesla. The publication says the South Korean automaker will release its first fully electric offerings in 2021, in the form of a sedan and an SUV. Genesis claims to be “moving very fast on this,” so expect to hear more (official) news on this

Jordan takes another BTCC double at Croft
Andrew Jordan claimed his fourth and fifth race wins of 2019 in the latest MSA British Touring Car Championship round at Croft, as the new BMW 3 Series continued its stunning start to the season. Tom Chilton took the honours in the final race of the day in his Motorbase-run Ford Focus RS for his first win of the season. Team BMW driver Colin Turkington took three solid finishes at the Yorkshire circuit, including a second place in the second race, to strengthen his championship lead. BMW Pirtek Racing driver Jordan claimed his first pole position since 2014 in a qualifying session hit by five red flags, and delivered a faultless performance to dominate the opening race. Honda Civic Type R racer Chris Smiley kept the pressure on throughout. Chilton ran third, spending the final stages of the race holding off the BMWs of Turkington and Tom Oliphant. Mercedes-Benz takes the covers off the 2020 GLB 250 4MATIC
With no shortage of crossovers and SUVs for sale today in Canada, it’s inevitable a few of them won’t have the mouth to match their off-road trousers. Like a glib-tongued salesman making promises he can’t keep, some all-wheel-drive rigs look like they’re ready for adventure but promptly crack a nail (or chin spoiler) the instant the pavement ends. So, is the new GLB glib? Let’s find out. It has the rough-and-ready appearance down pat, with a lantern jaw visage and the de rigeur black cladding above the wheel arches which appear like kudzu on all vehicles in this segment. Its roofline aft of the C-pillar is similarly upright, flying in the face of all these so-called crossover coupes. Your author thinks this is a good thing. It’ll maximize cargo room, too. To say it’s a mini-G is a bridge too far, but at least it doesn’t look like a used bar of soap. So it has the looks. What about power? The two-liter four-banger is said to haul this GLB 250 4MATIC to 100 km/h from rest in less than seven seconds, with that 4MATIC suffix denoting standard issue all-wheel-drive. In regular conditions, the system shoves 20 per cent of available power to the rear wheels, 30 per cent in Sport mode. Inside, the GLB is all-Mercedes, with a vast digital panel spanning most of the dashboard atop three centrally-positioned round air vents. That silver streak in front of the passenger isn’t the same grab handle found in the G, but it sure looks like one. Other aluminum trim ratchet up the luxury-industrial feel. This is a three-row rig, by the way, with Merc promising that passengers measuring 1.68 metres tall (about 5’5”) should be able to fit comfortably. USB ports abound, including in the third row, along with the comfort and convenience options one tends to expect from the three-pointed star. With standard all-wheel drive and legions of amenities, the GLB isn’t totally glib. As for us, we’re hanging on to our chequebooks until the inevitable hot model arrives with more power. Think the company’ll place its new 421-hp four banger in this thing? No, neither do we—but stranger things have happened. They are stuffing that engine into an A-Class hatchback, after all.

Tracy Morgans Bugatti Veyron in a fender-bender with a Honda CR-VTwitter @J_MOSK Tracy Morgan’s $2-million Bugatti Veyron was hit by a Honda CR-V at a ritzy intersection in New York City just an hour after he purchased the vehicle. The comedian’s new buy was of a used vehicle technically, but, unfortunately for the Honda driver, it wasn’t just some daily driver—this was a Bugatti Veyron Grand Sport convertible, according to Page Six. “He bought it today. That style with the top down is usually over two million dollars. Those kinds of cars are very rare and to get any year is special.” Those are the words of Frank Pica, a sales consultant at Manhattan Motorcars where Tracy bought the vehicle second-hand. “When I got the phone call, I said, ‘That’s Tracy’s car?’ I couldn’t believe it.
